Movies watched in 2023
Close (2022, Belgium/France/Netherlands)
Director: Lukas Dhont
Writers: Lukas Dhont & Angelo Tijssens
Mini-review:
What a beautiful, heartbreaking movie. It's such a sensitive, nuanced exploration of masculinity, friendship and grief. The story feels very realistic (some scenes have literally happened to me), and it is harrowing to see the painful ways these characters develop due to societal expectations and peer pressure. Tbh, I saw a lot of me in them. Also, I like that the movie never tries to define the characters' sexuality, cause that's not what it wants to talk about. What it wants to highlight is the way society makes boys terrified of being affective with each other, even though it should be completely normalized.
On top of that, the story is told with gorgeous cinematography and mindblowing performances from Eden Dambrine and Gustav de Waele. Although they are very young and neither of them had previous acting experience, their performances are flawless. Dambrine stands out more because he gets more screen time, and his eyes are incredibly expressive: you can always see in them his character's complex emotions and thoughts. But seriously, they are easily two of the best child actors I've ever seen. Émilie Dequenne and Léa Drucker also give beautiful performances as the boys' mothers. Anyway, Close is not an easy watch, but it does send a very important and powerful message.
P.S. The movie has some potentially triggering content which I'm not including here or in the tags because it would be a spoiler. Keep that in mind.

Close (2022, dir. Lukas Dhont) - review by Rookie-Critic
Tumblr media
Friendship is the bedrock of childhood. Really, it's the bedrock of adulthood, as well, although most of us don't put the same effort into it that we did when we were kids. Close analyzes a relationship between two young boys that almost transcends friendship and becomes brotherhood, and I don't really mean familial brotherhood so much as a platonic life partner that you literally cannot live without. It also analyzes how societal pressures on masculinity and the negative perception of showing any kind of physical affection towards a friend of the same sex as you, and how that can tear that bond apart from the inside and out and pull those two people in opposite directions. I found Close to be incredibly moving at times, and incredibly emotionally manipulative at others. It really walks a tightrope throughout the second half of the film and occasionally stumbles into territory that feels a tad more melodramatic than it does powerful.
The film's central theme and the performance given by first time actor Eden Dambrine, who plays Leo, one of the two best friends, are the film's biggest wins, with the latter being an absolute powerhouse. Dambrine never slips into the melodrama that the film around him seeks to portray, actually giving quite an understated performance, one of solemn despair, quiet guilt, and longing. I was blown away to find out that this is his first ever acting job. Literally, if you go to Dambrine's IMDb page you will only see one entry, and that's Close. I would toss his name into the ring with the likes of Frankie Corio and Woody Norman as one of the best child performances in film in the last decade. Also, to speak on the tightrope walk from earlier, while there are those moments where the film slips, the moments that are genuinely moving are powerful, and it's in the little things. I think the moment that broke the tear dam for me on this was something so innocuous that it really made me wonder why the film even bothered with all of its more grand, clearly-trying-to-tug-at-the-heartstrings bits at all.
A thing that the film does fantastically is show how best friends tend to be taken in by at least one of the two kids' families, and the relationship that develops between the parents and their child's friend as something almost as strong as the bond between the kids themselves. Towards the beginning of the film, the character played by Émilie Dequenne calls Leo, who is not her biological son, her "son-at-heart," and the warmed me to the bone. It's something that I personally don't see portrayed in film a whole lot, and I appreciate that Close took that on immensely. One last complaint I will throw out, and this is my nitpick for this film, is that it does have a tendency to drag. I really felt it towards the beginning and towards the end, where it felt like the film was stalling for time, showing the audience things we'd already seen, or hit beats it already hit. Maybe this was to drive the point home more, but really I didn't need any of that. Director Lukas Dhont was doing a great job at conveying his point from the start. It's not as egregious as something like Bardo, by any means, but I did take notice of it.
This one really struck a chord in me. I've never pushed a friend away the way Leo does in this, but I have struggled with showing non-romantic affection for my friends my entire life because of worries over how it might be perceived, and I'm so glad I've never let it get as bad as what happens between the two best friends in Close. This was a rough, but very rewarding watch, and well-deserving of its Oscar nomination. I look forward to seeing what Dhont and Dambrine do next.
Score: 9/10
Currently only in theaters.

To quote Vincent Martella as Phineas Flynn of Phineas and Ferb fame, once again as usual for Today (but in my very own way): Fellers, I know what I can still share for Today (complete with a Song like Kick It Up a Notch included) and so, to honor a special Early Double Birthday for Jouji Nakata and Sarah Anne Williams, I got this and well, have a HAPPY EARLY DOUBLE BIRTHDAY to these tunefully talented two, Ladies and Gentlemen! ;)

It is peculiar, but as soon as I am in the midst of nature and by myself, everything that is base and trivial vanishes without trace. On such days nothing scares me; and this helps me again and again.
— Gustav Mahler, published in a letter he wrote to his wife, Alma Mahler, on June 15, 1907. This letter is included in the book "The Letters of Gustav Mahler 1860-1911" edited by Henry-Louis de La Grange and Gunther Weiss. (via The Hammock Papers)

I’ve been digging through the data files for Code Vein (partly fact-finding, partly to fill out the TCRF page because it was in a sorry state when I came across it, partly just personal curiosity) and there’s some names which go unused which should be useful for people who want to write fanfic or just know more about their favourite characters or what have you.
The first category are people who are only referred to by a given name in the game itself but have family names. They’re mostly sidequest people—in particular Louis and Karen have no ingame surname at all, so there’s no confirmation of the rumour started (as far as I can tell) by Bandai-Namco Europe that they’re part of the Amamiya family.
Matthew, the brave but inexperienced revenant who loses his weapon, is Matthew Suren.
Shang the merchant is Shang Berman.
Gustav, the forthright guy protesting the provisional government and their levy system, is Gustav Arens.
Daryl, who just wants to find his friends, is Daryl Xenakis.
Sophie, the revenant researching the Successors who used to work with Mido, is Sophie Clayton.
Richard, the guy who lost his sleeping bag, is Richard Saut. (The Japanese indicates this should be pronounced like the French word saut, which means "jump".)
Lyle, the Crypt Spire guard who barely survived Mido's onslaught, is Lyle Wilson.
Dominic, the human stuck in the Provisional Government Center, is Dominic Weiss. (Pronounce it like the name of the RWBY character, not like the German word; the Japanese name probably should be romanised "Wise".)
Then there's two people who are never referred to by name in the game at all.
Human Woman, whom you rescue from a life of being emergency rations for a gang of starving revenants, is named Chloe Bizet (pronounced like the name of the composer).
The Self-Important Revenant, one of those starving revenants who ultimately just wanted to find somewhere to live, is Johnny Eckart.
Finally, someone who has a surname which is likely to make some people stop and think.
Valerio, the former Successor of the Throat who sealed away the horrors in the depths, is Valerio Valentino. Yes, that suggests he's related to Aurora. Small world, huh?

Parsifal: Walther Kirchhoff and Anna-Bahr Mildenburg; Bayreuth, 1914
Kirchhoff, Walter, German tenor; b. Berlin, March 17, 1879; d. Wiesbaden, March 26, 1951. He studied in Berlin with Eugen Weiss and Lilli Lehmann. He made his operatic debut at the Berlin Royal Opera in 1906 as Faust; continued on its roster until 1920 after it became the Berlin State Opera in 1918; sang there again in 1923-24, 1928-29, and 1932; also appeared at the Bayreuth Festivals (1911–14) and at Covent Garden in London in 1913 and 1924. He made an acclaimed Metropolitan Opera debut in N.Y. as Loge in Das Rheingold on Jan. 28, 1927; remained on its roster until 1931. He was particularly successful in Wagnerian roles.
***
Bahr-Mildenburg, Anna (1872–1947) Austrian soprano. Born Anna Mildenburg on November 29, 1872, in Vienna, Austria; died on January 27, 1947, in Vienna; studied with Rosa Papier-Paumgartner; married Hermann Bahr (the writer), in 1909.
Debuted in Hamburg as Brünnhilde in a performance conducted by Gustav Mahler (1895); began a relationship with Mahler; appeared with Mahler in Vienna (1898–1916) and at Bayreuth (1897–1914).
In the musical world, Anna Bahr-Mildenburg's name is inextricably linked with that of Gustav Mahler. Born in Vienna on November 29, 1872, she did not choose singing early and was already 19 when she began to study with Rosa Papier-Paumgartner , an influential teacher. Four years later, Anna auditioned for Pollini, the director of the Hamburg Opera. Recognizing her great talent, Pollini engaged her immediately, and she appeared shortly thereafter as Brünnhilde in Die Walküre, one of opera's most demanding roles. During rehearsals, Bahr-Mildenburg met Gustav Mahler, and he took over the direction of her career. Under his training, she became an outstanding dramatic soprano. During their years in Hamburg, Bahr-Mildenburg and Mahler had a passionate affair which ended by the time she first performed in Vienna in 1898. Their professional relationship continued, however, after Papier-Paumgartner suggested the former lovers renew their professional collaboration when Mahler became director of the Vienna Hofopera. Bahr-Mildenburg joined the peerless Mahler ensemble and was on the Hofopera staff until 1917, nearly 20 years.
Bahr-Mildenburg also appeared on the international stage. She was at Covent Garden in 1906 and would appear in the first London performance of Richard Strauss' Elektra in 1910. By 1907, some said her voice was in decline, perhaps because she had assumed the heaviest dramatic roles which taxed her capabilities. The sole recording which documents her talents was made in 1905; it demonstrates that hers was a powerful, penetrating voice with a superb attack. As a singer, she did not hold herself back, an approach which may explain the decline of her voice but also explains why Mahler and Pollini were so excited by their discovery of her.

Rookie-Critic's Top 25 Films of 2022: Honorable Mentions - Close (dir. Lukas Dhont)
Tumblr media
This is a film I feel like a lot of teenage boys and insecure men need to watch. The story of a friendship torn apart by societal pressures and assumptions in an irreparable way, Close analyzes what these pressures do to young boys and how it can turn something so innocently beautiful into something cruel and heartbreaking. Eden Dambrine, who plays the protagonist Leo in the film had never acted prior to being cast in Close, and he gives one of the most convincing and powerful performances of last year. Non-romantic, platonic affection towards friends of the same sex as you should not be something that is ridiculed or shunned, and if you need a case as to why, which you shouldn't, watch Close.
Currently available to rent/purchase on digital (iTunes, Amazon, Vudu, etc.).

Hola libros a recomendar sobre espiritualidad o despertar ?(。
Hola!
