Ethel Cain: 'i love feeling bad from time to time' / Roland Barthes: 'Where there is a wound, there is a subject'
Parsifal: The wound I saw bleeding now bleeds in me
Ethel Cain: "i love feeling bad from time to time, i always just fully lean into it. when i was a kid i’d chew holes inside my cheeks while i read at night until they’d bleed and then i’d have horrible sores that would ache for days afterwards, but sometimes i’d bite the sores between my teeth and make them hurt even worse because when i let go, for a moment they wouldn’t hurt at all. i think life as a whole is kind of like that."
Roland Barthes: "Where there is a wound, there is a subject: 'The wound! The wound!' says Parsifal (Richard Wagner), thereby becoming 'himself'; and the deeper the wound, at the body's center (at the 'heart'), the more the subject becomes a subject: for the subject is intimacy ('The wound … is of a frightful intimacy'). Such is love's wound : a radical chasm (at the 'roots' of being) , which cannot be closed, and out of which the subject drains, constituting himself as a subject in this very draining." (Roland Barthes, Fragments of a Lover's Discourse, OC V, 234)

Bruce Springsteen, Ethel Cain, Amfortas: Sick and Forced to Cancel. Fans: 'Disclose the Grail and Officiate!'
'You can spend a fucking hour in a bed on stage and it doesn't matter. We want to see you.' (An Ethel Cain fan on Reddit)
This reminded me of that scene in Parsifal:

After Bruce Springsteen's cancellations two weeks ago (Marseille, Prague, and Milan), it’s now Ethel Cain, who has lost her voice due to illness and has to cancel her concert at Primavera Sound Porto.
On Reddit, a fan asks that Ethel Cain be there anyway, even bedridden, because her presence alone is the grail for the fans:
"Please Hayden (Ethel Cain), at least let us give you the gifts. You can spend a fucking hour in a bed on stage and it doesn't matter. We want to see you."
Following numerous criticisms from other fans reminding that Hayden (Ethel Cain) was not a circus animal to be displayed while she was sick, the fan clarified that her message was partly ironic.
(After Bruce Springsteen's concert was canceled, some fans wished that the E Street Band would play anyway, even if Bruce couldn't perform the vocals.)
This reminded me of that scene in Parsifal: Amfortas no longer has the strength to serve the Grail, but the community urges him because it cannot survive without the Grail: "You must serve. Disclose the Grail and officiate!"

Best wishes for a good recovery to Bruce Springsteen and Ethel Cain.
