Quote
Desire with no future, bitter longing — I starve myself by yearning for intimacy that doesn't and won't exist.

I ignored all the signs under the surface, refused to accept the truth behind the curtains, drunk on our love as how dictators drown in their power, and I faced the consequences while you grinned from the crowds. your love was the looming guillotine hanging above my head, but what they didn't see behind their pity was that i gladly fell into your arms in the end.

I did this during today’s @poetryorchard Kiki’s Delivery Service Creative Writing Workshop. This was incredibly fun to put this together. In fact it wasn’t too long after the workshop ended that I rushed to make this graphic and pair it with this speedpaint and artwork.

For I am the bird and the cage
I am the first glimmer of a roaring lava yet the decaying flesh of a devoured corpse
I'm the ashes of the ravaged throne yet the embers razing the entire kingdom
I'm the fleeting moments of insanity yet the consuming lucidities of eternity
I'm the last drop of water parched unto the droughten land yet the untamable waves of the boundless ocean
I am a myriad of Twilight skies yet the daunting thunders of midnight dusks
I'm the everlasting wretch experiencing eternal glee yet another damned creature searching for solace in a kaleidoscope of blues.

Spring passes just as quickly as it approached, right inbetween my fingers, yet the ink still runs through the quill’s end as surely as the blood in my veins.
In just two months. June’s end. Where will we be ? Are you yet another fleeting spring to be quietly added onto my shelf, left to collect dust ? Yet another fleeting spring, to wordlessly line the seventeen others beside it ? Spitefully ornate collection.
Yet another spring. Is it you ? Is it me ? Is there such a thing as us ? The questions are endless and poetry has run its course. After all, what are words to the only one who has left me speechless ? How do I return to quill’s sharp cold when your warmth still lingers on my hand ?
I know, I ask for what’s not mine. Selfishly, I ask for your image not to fade from my mind, for my verses not to lose their colour. Even more selfishly, I ask for you to stay. It isn’t an eternal spring I yearn for, no. It’s to see you by my side, to see how summer lights up the brown of your hair, how the December frost colours your cheeks red, how the autumn wind makes your eyes close. How spring and all its shades decorate your hair, as I place flowers on your pretty waves.

The Cobra Eaters
Hanoi, 2022
When it’s cut from the body with one chop, in Hang Ha Noi restaurant, the king cobra’s severed head yawns. In the death dream, the fangs come out to bite, then hide inside the sleeping jaws. The headless body leaps high from the metal pan, gets tangled with the wiggling tail. Minutes later, it’s skinned, slit with kitchen knife, dripping blood into a plastic cup.
It’s still alive. In a way we’re alive when we recuse the body to sleep, tuck our fangs in in a helpless yawn, poison hid in the nook of the heart. The sleeping torsos jerk at the thud of a chop, thump the ground with a fuming tail: when we cobra eaters crawl in the hollow of the night slowly serpentine between dream and death.
(The poem was first published in Issue 15 of HeartWood Literary Magazine: http://www.heartwoodlitmag.com/the-cobra-eaters , and then in Outlook: https://www.outlookindia.com/culture-society/five-poems-about-people-across-the-world-weekender_story-328626)

Every moment is past tense.
As soon as we begin,
we spiral toward an ending.
Only nostalgia can make a guillotine glisten.
