Okay, I've got one I'm curious about:

Add in the tags if you feel like your favorite Pokemon is unpopular/an uncommon favorite.

My favorite is Ninjask, and I've only had a couple other people say it's also their favorite.

Honestly people who pick grass type starter pokemon are lunatics like you're already vulnerable to bug, flying, ice, poison and fire just by like. Default. And there's guaranteed bug and flying types in your starting routes in every game. That's fine. This is fine. The world sees your little guy as a walking salad. And if you're playing gold/silver and it's remakes then fuck you and your chikorita because the first two gyms are flying and bug type but whatever i suppose. So you manage to survive this divine sign from the universe you've made a mistake and evolved your little guy, and it's very rare for a grass type to remain only a grass type. Unfortunately, now that you've evolved as a split type it's likely that now you've either made moves that were not very effective to mildly effective.. or opened up a whole new type vulnerability. Grass ground? Now water AND grass type moves pack a decent punch. Grass poison? Sure bugs might not completely devour you, but psychic attacks are going to ruin your day. Arceus looked upon grass types and firmly reminded them they are at the bottom of the foodchain forever and ever amen. Yet people will still pick Bulbasaur. Talk about love man

the current ideas i have for character teams in my utena pokemon au:

general thoughts i put into making these:

1. i tried to give the characters pokemon i think they'd genuinely be fond of and want to use, and less so pokemon that are symbolic of things about said character (to an extent. nanami's are kind of questionable. but i did avoid color-coding) the exceptions to this rule are akio and half of anthy's team, because i think it makes sense for them.

2. it did not start out as something i did on purpose but anthy and akio are the only two with a full team of six while everyone else has three, and i think that works well.

i put a cubone on here originally but i thought that was a bid morbid. anyway yeah kirlia from the ralts dios/akio gave her, dewott for sword-fighting (shell-fighting?) and scorbunny because it's a little soccer player and would love playing sports with her :)

anthy

the first three are the pokemon she's "supposed" to have. the rose bride pokemon if you will. the last three are her silly little guys. one i unfortunately did not have room to add is a torchic nicknamed nanami, but i think anthy does have more pokemon than just the ones on her team (like the rest of her twenty goomy hiding in the pencil box)

akio

okay so mega gallade is literally just dios as a pokemon so i had to give it to him. i'm thinking that it can't mega evolve anymore as part of akio losing the power he once had and all that. there is something in the lore about a strong bond being required for mega evolution too, so my headcanon for why, is that his gallade just fucking hates his guts because he sucks. coballion is a legendary pokemon, the leader of the swords of justice trio and another of dios' pokemon. minior is a meteor to go with his whole "i like space" facade and the last three are the evolved forms of anthy's pokemon

kind of a joke team, i just put pokemon based on various animals that torment her. and egg

wakaba

some cute normal types for wakaba is maybe a little on the nose but it fits. wooloo is a reference to her sheep mugs. i saw fanart of wakaba with a chikorita once (i think i have reblogged it) and it's really so perfect. i wanted her to have a grass type for the whole onion thing anyway. there are honestly so many pokemon that fit wakaba it was hard to pick just three

Gen 1

Bulbasaur! :D

In fact I also like Charizard well enough, but the first Pokémon I ever had was my lovely Bulbasaur Daffodil. He remains the one Pokémon that I persistently keep bringing through the generations from game to game, with the result that he is now my oldest surviving Pokémon. The same one. Still my first and best.

He is a big grumpy potato flower and I love him.

Squirtle bores me. These days so does Charizard really. Very overused. But then, so is the entirety of Gen 1.

Gen 2

What an awful fucking generation from start to finish. Abysmal. Entirely lacking in charisma, sense or artistry. Utterly swagless. Everything in it that's any good was either an addition to an existing line (Crobat) or later given an evolution to make it good (Mamoswine). Bitchless and appalling. Yeah I said it.

Picking the best starter is like being asked to choose between a dirty napkin, a used hanky or a mouldy sock. I guess Cyndaquil, with Chikorita second? Honestly there's not much in it.

(Apologies to anyone who unaccountably holds Feraligatr as their favourite and you should feel no shame because the world is rich and varied and fascinating and you are a beautiful thread in that tapestry but I also implore you to get better taste)

Gen 3

NOW WE'RE TALKING!! All three charming, all three with excellent design. Actual thought went into these to fit their ecology into a wider world. Sceptile is an ecosystem engineer species! It grows new forests from its own seeds! It very nearly wins, in fact, but they shafted it on the mono-typing (I will wax lyrical about the brilliance of Mega Sceptile after barely two mouthfuls of wine however, what a fucking INCREDIBLE turnabout. If only that had been the standard actual design. Sigh.)

But BLAZIKEN! Beautifully cute as a Torchic, lanky teenager as a Combusken, and then the glory of its final form being a six foot ninja chicken here to do cock fighting.

Not my fave starter of all time, I don't think, but it's high on my list and it certainly wins in the first three generations

just beat pokemon seaglass emerald. good fucking mod, i'm gonna post about my team here!

my starter was a mudkip that i named kaneko!, after kaneko fumiko, which in retrospect might not've been the most fitting name but oh well! it's a good name! kaneko!'s a sweetie, hugged me all the damn time, steadfast friend throughout the entire game!! love her as much as i usually love my starter, so that's an improvement over crystal

then i had beller, my swellow. she was one of the first guys i caught, and aside from kaneko! was one of the only consistent factors throughout the entire game. she was reliable, solid as they come, if a bit boring. she's like an AK in that regard, so functional that it can be a bit uninteresting. honestly i just chose her because i was forcing myself to not use skarmory yet again. god i love skarmory

then there's Gwenna, my mawile. not the strongest, but definitely came in clutch quite a few times. was particularly useless early on in her career, but she shaped up quite nicely! also i just love mawile, was nice to finally use one of my favorite gamers in a mainline game

then there was Hana!!!, my meganium! i was so surprised that i managed to find her just randomly, but i suppose that's the nature of the "you can get Literally Everyone in the wild" kindsa hacks. i raised her from a little chikorita and, as always, she was very reliable because meganium is a very good pokemon and i'll fight whoever says otherwise. also, i named her Hana!!! because hana is japanese for flower and she's a big ole flower creature so it fits

then there was jemna, my medicham. i found her surprisingly early, which was rather nice because it's just nice to have a decent psychic gamer around, and the fighting doesnt hurt either. she was what i used instead of gardevoir, since i've pretty much always gotten a ralts whenever i've played pokemon emerald. pretty reliable, all things considered; didn't have the best move pool but we made it work. mostly just wish she learned a better fighting move, but oh well.

and finally, there was daniel, my raichu. i caught him when he was just a little boy, i believe he was a pichu at first but he evolved into pikachu pretty damn quickly. i love daniel, he's such a good boy & he deserves all of the pop i can afford. and by the time he fully evolved he did in fact become a pretty damn strong boy. incidentally i pretty much always read his name in a doting jewish grandmother voice, and i think that's pretty indicative of how i think/feel about him. he's such a good boy..... The Best.....

McSpirk's Pokemon Teams

I decided to try and put together some pokemon teams for McSpirk just for fun. These teams are mostly comprised from vibes.

All under the cut because this is a looooooong long post

Bones

Meganium

Chikorita is cute

Its pokedex says it can calm aggressive feelings.

Overall, I just think it'd be a cute pokemon for him to raise? Maybe one he's even has since childhood.

Blissey A classic pokemon for Doctors and Nurses. They heal other pokemon in the wild. Just very caring and fitting for Bones, honestly. A must-have.

Togekiss Imagine him raising a Togepi. IMAGINE IT. Evolving Togepi to Togetic through friendship. And then to Togekiss Also "It shares many blessings with people who respect one another’s rights and avoid needless strife." Is it fitting or funny, who knows.

Umbreon A contrast to Spock, which you'll see later! I like to think this pokemon was a gift from Spock and/or Kirk, given to him so that he has a "battling pokemon" for protection - the catch being that Umbreon is mostly a defense pokemon, rather than an attack-focused pokemon. Plus, it can glow in the dark for him. One of the three eeveelutions that evolves through friendship.

Miltank Look this was mostly just a funny addition. But also Miltank makes Moomoo Milk, which is a healing item in-game.

"Its milk is packed with nutrition, making it the ultimate beverage for the sick or weary."

Drakloak Okay I was originally just going to have Umbreon be his only pokemon capable of fighting. However, after going through pokedex entries, I thought this pokemon would also work as a great part of his team. Drakloak dotes on Dreepy until they evolve. It gets restless if it does not have a dreepy to care for, and will care for literally anything as a substitute. Also its evolution is super cunty, I almost gave it to Spock. Maybe this, too, was gifted to him, and he's just in the middle of raising it into a Dragapult.

EXTRA: Either has raised or will raise a Cubone at some point. Like are you kididng me. I was gonna put a mudsdale in the team, but decided that maybe he left his Mudsdale that he grew up with to Joanna, so that they can take care of each other

I think his "main" pokemon would be Meganium or Blissey.

Spock

Espeon Contrasts with Bones. A pokemon that evolves with high friendship. A psychic type. Plus I think he'd love its big ears. Overall, just a very fitting pokemon for him.

Lucario "A well-trained one can sense auras to identify and take in the feelings of creatures over half a mile away." "It can tell what people are thinking. Only Trainers who have justice in their hearts can earn this Pokémon’s trust." Another pokemon that evolves through high friendship. I just think it's a good fit.

Gardevoir Will create black holes to protect its trainer. Make of that what you will. An extremely loyal psychic and fairy pokemon. Has a general air of grace and nobility that I think suits Spock.

Intelleon Look. I know what you're thinking. Why the fuck would I choose Intelleon over all starters. Honestly, I was tempted to give him Sceptile or Meowscarada. However, wanted to give McSpirk different types of starters. And out of the water starters, it was between Intelleon and Samurott. So why Intelleon? I think him raising a very tearful little lizard into a lanky, cunty spy lizard is fucking hilarious. So yes, this is a bit of a meme option.

Haxorus "While usually kindhearted, it can be terrifying if angered. Tusks that can slice through steel beams are how Haxorus deals with its adversaries."

While Spock does have some strong pokemon, I think this one is a good one to sort of underly that somewhat Secret Vulcan Strength.

Ursaluna I disregarded any qualms of time-related forms, so paradox pokemon and Hisuian pokemon were considered! This one was decided on with help from the lovelies of the McSpirk discord server! Spock has this pokemon as a reference to the sehlat of Vulcan. This is a pokemon he's had since he was a child, and it's shiny to boot. A unique pokemon to match a unique guy like him.

EXTRA: I think he'd raise an Abra at some point. I was torn between a Goodra and a Haxorus for him, I do think that they all have more than six pokemon, and that these are just the ones most commonly in their rotation. So maybe he does have a Goodra that stays on Vulcan or smth!

I also considered some Poison types for him, namely Roserade or Crobat!

I did consider giving him a Mewtwo. Genuinely.

I think his main pokemon would be Espeon or Ursaluna.

Kirk

Okay, Kirk was an interesting one. So far, I was able to pretty much make teams that I think could fit both AOS and TOS. However, Kirk gave me the most trouble with this. So of the three teams, I think this one is probably the one I'm not as certain on.

Charizard A classic pokemon, one that searches for challenges, and never attacks those weaker than itself. Its pre-evolution Charmeleon purposefully gets into fights, which I think fits AOS Jim pre-academy lol.

Sylveon The third eeveelution to evolve by friendship. Its pokedex entries talk of its ability to soothe conflicts with its calming aura. A very affectionaste pokemon, I see it being close with Bones and Spock's eeveelutions, and perhaps being the most outgoing of the three.

Scrafty "While mostly known for having the temperament of an aggressive ruffian, this Pokémon takes very good care of its family, friends, and territory." Suits the outer perspective of him, and I also think AOS Jim in particular would vibe with a Scrafty.

Dragonite LOOK AT IT. It's a kindhearted pokemon that always feels the need to help others, and frequently rescues others from drowning. Just a very Jim feeling pokemon to me, honestly. Also a classic.

Ampharos

Smth smth... Guiding light? Ampharos is known for the way it shines in darkness, and is known to be a beacon for the lost. Juat has the vibes of a Jim pokemon to me

Clodsire

"When attacked, this Pokémon will retaliate by sticking thick spines out from its body. It’s a risky move that puts everything on the line." Risky moves, you say? Well that definitely sounds like Kirk.

I think his main pokemon would be Charizard.

Was tempted to give AOS Jim a Cyclizar. Maybe he has one, and it's just not in his regular rotation?

I think at some point he'd at least befriend a Latios. "Latios will only open its heart to a Trainer with a compassionate spirit." - If it wasn't for Dragonite, Latios would be his dragon-type pokemon. And that goes for either version of him.

I was tempted to give him a whole Mew. Just for the fun of it.

Maaaybe maybe, Bones gifts him the Cubone-now-Marowak that he raised. And Spock gifts him the Abra-now-Kadabra he raisedm which evolves into Alakazam. Just maybe.

Bonuses

While I think all their Pokemon are more than happy to hang out, I think the eeveelutions in particular love being together. Find them in cuddle piles if they're not with their trainers.

In AOS I can see Bones and Spock raising a Cubone together.

While I was making these teams, I thought about how the Lake Trio from Diamond and Pearl suited them. Uxie, Mesprit, Azelf: Bringers and also erasers of Knowledge, Emotion and Willpower

So for Christmas my dad bought me a Gameboy Colour, second hand original teal colourway missing a battery cover but overall great condition, and I AM MODDING IT.

Yes folks, you heard it right, I'm blowing approximately £150 tonight on Gameboy Colour mods including a new IPS back-lit screen, a clear housing shell, Led lights that change colours under the buttons and a pokemon lens. To be a modern take on the 1999 Japan exclusive gameboy colour released alongside gen 2 aka pokemon gold and silver, the lens will have totodile, cyndaquil and chikorita on as well as a pikachu and the whole colourway is very similar aside from the lights. I'M SO FUCKING EXCITED.

It's Chikorita. I've heard it's kinda hated on/ it's not a good pokemon, but I don't care, I love it. It has a leaf on it's head, with which it throws other, tinier leaves. Who care about stats when you have that?

5.: Favorite region?

Honestly? I think Unova. I really loved Black and White and I think it was partially because you didn't have to teach your pokemom "Flash" or "Surf" to progress in the game. Also, there was 3D for the first time in pokemon (outside of a cutscene).

6.: Least favorite region?

Eh... Although I agree with your statement about Kalos... I didn't like either Sinnoh much and I think I had more fun in Kalos.

7.: Favorite Pokemon?

Belossom. Just look at it! It's perfect!

8.: Least favorite Pokemon?

I don't think I have one. Maybe Bidoof, because like... that's just a beaver. It's just a plain old beaver. It's not a pokemon, it's a beaver.

But, you know, because it's a beaver, it's cute, so it's fine.

19.: Which evil Pokemon team is your favorite?

Hm... I'd go with Team Aqua, because their plan is just... well it's just completely stupid.

Like, team Rocket was basically the Mafia, and in later generations, the teams have basically all a variation of the plan: "well if I can control this legendary pokemon, I'm going to rule the world!!!"

But gen 3 stand out, because both teams have the stupidest, but also in a way the most pure, motivations of all. They both want to terraform, but with no particular goals or anything. I don't remember them wanting to rule the world. No, they just wanted go and wake up some legendary pokemon because earth/water is cool, I guess. Pokemon mistery dungeon you say? I am going to drop here some pokemons that the characters could be based on the Vibesᵗᵐ alone (No I am not looking from what gen they are bc this already will be a search-)

Let's start

Dream: Victini, Servine, Zorua/Zoroark, Lucario (the last two are kind of an Easter egg tho, because both where pokemons that, before the gen they appeared came out, they were featured in movies so people thought they were legendary or semi-legendary, even more so with Lucario because of one of the Mistery Dungeons games- idk I just think that it would be fun)

- George: Espeon/Glaceon, Frillish, Drifloon

- Sapnap: Combusken, Growlithe, Houndour

- Tommy: Cyndaquil, Chimchar, Treeko, Eevee

- Tubbo: Chikorita, Eevee, Rotom, Drifloon

- Eret: Froslass, Absol, Shuppet, Swablu/Altaria

- Fundy: Vulpix/Ninetails (I had to ok?), Riolu/Lucario, Jolteon, Zeraora

- Niki: Sylveon/Leafeon, Espurr, Mienfoo, Scorbunny

Some of these Pokemon are gender exclusive but honestly Gender is fake. We can do what we want.

On one hand I want Dream as Servine because he green and Servine has that smug ass energy. On the other hand Zoroark fits him very well and since he’s not a dick in this au. We can just have him as a guy who uses his illusions to play pranks on people. Nothing more. We have slow burn found family and Dream is going to be dragged in it whether he wants to or not.

George as any of those Pokemon honestly fit him really well. We can get Frillish since it loooks like a sleepy guy but at the same time Drifloon works. Glaceon works so well though because of how much he sleeps and also how apathetic he is in regards of everything else.

Sapnap can probably be a Growlithe because of the vibes. He simply a puppy who likes fire a bit too much

Tommy as any of the Pokemon above works but I’m getting Treeko vibes now that I think about it. Just major Treeko vibes.

Tubbo as Rotom is something I have not thought of but man that’s good.

Eret as either a Frosslass or an Altaria is great. As I said before, fuck gender. They can be a Froslass. Either one of those two things work. Elegant and powerful. Also has some royal vibes so that’s great.

Fundy as Vulpix so we can give him the fox motif? Or a Riolu for aesthetic> Or Jolteon so we can have some explanation for Sally the Salmon?

Niki can be a Espurr or a Meinfoo. They can both learn fire type moves, with the Hidden Power Fire if she is an Espurr. She deserves it.

Wilbur as Staravia? Yeah that goes and fits the vibes. So does Absol honestly. Both of them fit the vibes.

Ranboo is probably for Phantump. Mainly because of the pokedex entry for it making sense and I can see it happening for Ranboo. This is also considering the fact that he is also human but fell a bit later.

Technoblade as Bisharp. Why? Because of knife hands and cool ass colors.

beat all the kanto gyms. progression was a tad obtuse at times but to be fair that's how shit went in early gen pokemon (and also a lot of games of the prehistoric period of the 20th century), and we have the internet these days so it's fine. surprised at how good of a challenge blue was, really; though it makes sense given how he's the final gym in the damn game. all that's left is mt silver... and Him... i think i'm gonna grind the elite 4 for a bit to get my guys all ripe and leveled up, i think i've settled on my final team. if you wanna hear me rant about my team, click the read more because i'm probably gonna go on for a while about each one and they all deserve it.

well, there's my starter, JAINA! the feraligatr. she's always been there, and honestly i was pleasantly surprised when i got a girl since those are always rare with the starters. i will say that my favorite gen 2 starter is the chikorita line, but every time i play a pokemon game i try not to overuse my favorites and go for a different experience every time and i already used chikorita during my HGSS playthrough (which, i'm actually pretty sure i haven't completed, but eh). i will say that out of all of my pokemon playthroughs, JAINA! has easily been my least reliable starter, and not to sound cold but i only love her a normal amount rather than the "i love her dearly" i've had for all my other starters. she's still really good though, and i do still love her

then there's kurohime!, my jynx. for a while, i've been of the opinion that ice types Suck and frankly? she turned me around on that. probably helps that she's also psychic, but she's consistently been one of my rocks ever since i got her (which, to be fair, was just before the eighth gym in johto). she's just like, really good, and i love her dearly. also, if you're wondering, her name is just the japanese word for "black" (kuro) and the japanese word for "princess" (hime) mashed up together, and i actually have a marginally convoluted train of thought for that. so, jynx is very obviously inspired by gyaru, right? and, well, as far as i'm aware male gyaru are called "gyaru-oh", with the "oh" meaning "king". and one of the most notable varieties of gyaru are called "kuro gyaru", so i just sorta like, reversed the gender there but since i didn't know the japanese word for queen i just went for princess instead. got the point across, anyways.

there's Ashe., my skarmory. i caught her either just before or just after the eighth johto gym, i forget which. she's also an extremely reliable pick just in general, often living through shit that's even super effective or crits. not even mentioning how good she is at "defusing" all the shithead self destruct users, given her steel type. she's also my flyer, so that naturally makes her innately useful. i had a pidgeotto named yuki!!! as my flyer before, but skarmory is just Better. my reasoning for naming her Ashe. is long forgotten, forever ago when i got my first skarmory in pokemon emerald she was also a girl and i decided "yeah, ashe is a good name for a skarmory" for whatever reason. maybe it's that the route you can catch skarmory on in emerald is the ashy volcano area with the banger soundtrack, i dunno.

now that i'm thinking about it, here's an honorable mention to my graveler KNICK (pronounced with or without the k depending on whichever's funniest at the time, so usually with the k). he was solid but by the time i got to the end of the johto gym challenge he had outgrown his usefulness, especially given how since i'm not playing on original hardware and i have no friends i can't really trade him, y'know. he was also really good at dealing with exploders, for what it's worth.

for a good while there, i had a gligar named GILLY!, i think he actually was there for the first time i took the elite 4. gligar learns Fuck & Shit for moves, at least in gen 2, so i cheated a bit to give him some relatively basic things like earthquake and rock throw and such. sue me, i cheated in literally no other regard. also, i named him after a line from a david bowie song, i believe ziggy stardust specifically. for some reason i just had that specific line of "jammin' good with weird and gilly!" in my brain at the moment so i was just like "sure, he seems like a gilly.

we have ivy!!!, my bellossom. i honestly expected him to end up a lot weaker than he did, but pretty much as soon as he evolved into a bellossom he became solid as they come. goddamn tanky, that's the best word for him, a motherfucking tank. dude could take super effective moves from guys well within his level range and take like a 10th of his health bar in damage. i feel like i could try to set him on fire with a lighter in his sleep and he wouldn't even wake up, and i'm not exaggerating. all while being a goddamn adorable little hula dancer fellow. fucking legend, i love him with my life. was a pain in the ass to get his evolution stone, fucking bugcatcher contests are bullshit.

there's my newest member, the guy who replaced GILLY!, his name? Ken. with the period. all of these are with the punctuation marks i wrote them with, because i think it's funny. i got him as a little baby tyrogue and trained him up real good until he evolved into a hitmonchan. it also took him until being a hitmonchan to learn some fucking moves other than tackle, though to be fair his Three Elemental Fist Techniques all came to him at the same time, with his first fighting type move coming fairly quickly after the fact. it's a weird euphoria leveling up once when all you've been training with is fucking tackle and immediately getting three pretty decent moves. instantly gave me solid coverage, even if his special attack stat is weak as hell we can always overcome that with training. and we currently are! after he got fire, ice, and thunder punch, he started growing damn quickly and caught up with the rest of my guy's levels almost immediately, it was damn impressive. went from like, level 10 or so to level 40 over the course of a single day, and i'm really proud of him. he's kinda got brittle bone disease due to how common birds are in general but that's nothing that obscene amounts of training can't fix! i kinda wanna get all my guys to level 100, or at least well into the 80s. Ken. is definitely a glass cannon, completely unlike his namesake but to be fair kenshiro from fist of the north star is stupid OP. he's my special little boy. but not my special-est little boy, that honor belongs to....

mint!!!!!! is my umbreon, my umbreon who evolved from an eevee at damn near level 50 and has easily been my highest level guy for as long as i've been training him to evolve. at first i was undecided if i wanted an umbreon or an espeon, but as soon as i realized i could get a jynx and that elsewise we're pretty hard up for good dark type gamers, i decided on umbreon and only leveling him at night. he definitely took a while, but god do i love my little baby boy... and he's strong! he was even strong by the end of his time as an eevee, an unreasonably powerful eevee because again, he was like level 47 or 48 when he finally evolved. but god damnit was he worth it. also, he evolved on the same night that trump got shot, so that happenstance is probably gonna live with me for the rest of my life. mint is my little gamer, and i love him with my life, and i wanna give him all the treats and pets in the world. he's literally perfect and i will not accept any criticism of him. and he's still technically my highest level guy, though the gap isn't that big anymore. he swept sabrina's gym, too! isn't he special... my precious little baby boy..... seriously just look up the gen 2 umbreon sprite he's cute as hell. again, not to sound cold but honestly i'm about as attached to him as i usually am to my starter, for what it's worth. he's my precious beast
