Genuinely thinking google or some other similar service that uses ai for things lately is going to get sued soon for some horrible accident that comes as a result of this. And when it does it’s going to be a hugeeeee win for people who are sick of ai

I'm so fucking sick of ai.
I don't want ai to write my stories for me. I don't want a robot telling me how to make a scene more emotional with stolen words it cannot feel and robbing it of its complexities with forced grammar and nonsensical musings. I don't want it to correct or rewrite anything for me.
I don't want ai to tell me information when I look something up and for it to be the first thing that's shoved in my face spouting false information. I don't want an 'overview' taking over the other pages of information written from heart and interest whether it be a small Wikipedia contribution or a whole blog from 2009 with comic sans and poorly formatted images.
I don't want it there and the very fact that it's pretty much impossible to disable, not even giving me the option of removing it is frankly quite harrowing. The very fact its there slurping up a power grid to steal website headings and make words that have no substance does nothing for my anxieties about the future of the world and don't get me started on ai 'art'. Its not surprising that these big corporate companies are so keen on it, but it doesn't make me any less angry.

the thing that is so funny (drives me insane) about ai stuff is like. the figureheads from the big corporations talking about their ethics and responsibilities or whatever are Not the ones building the ai tools. the people engineering and designing are 5 or so rungs of leadership below. and the people actually building the tool's managers probably do not care to send their direct reports their corporate ethics guidelines or whatever. and the people building it are under tight deadlines to be the fastest to unveil AI Assistant Named Jorto Who Will Learn Your Wardrobe And Give You AI-designed Outfits Using Weather Forecasts. so No they don't know how AI trained on human-created materials will get really good at Recreating Bias. they don't know or care that their tools will put people out of work. they are hoping that someone else in their enormous company is going to make sure the services the data pass through are handled securely and can't be goaded out of a GPT. anyways. never trust a word that comes out of a tech company spokesperson.

accidentally unfollowed u trying to send an ask i'm soso sorry T-T but also people who rely on chatgpt for uni are so incomprehensible to me partially because i took a quick college course last year to get into my job, social care, and like can you imagine having a carer or smth who didn't know what they were doing because they cheated the entire time they were learning??? but also like you're in an academic setting they're gonna have shit in place to notice plagiarism and they take that so seriously lmao. AI bros are annoying as fuck
Dw bro but SO REALLLL LIKE. I watched the main person I was bitching about for a while and they're a business student who was using chatgpt to pass a sociology test or something 😰😰 NOT a good sign for the businesses of tomorrow

New in AI art generation: researchers are using a parallel processing version of MultiLayer Perceptrons (MLP) to generate almost 20 artworks on the same text prompt, all at once. Google "MLP 18+ artworks" to learn more.

MUSIC STREAMING (eg. SoundCloud, Spotify): usage of applications & sites (the work of machines, not even search results) use a lot of water as well. Because of global use of such services, machines are piping hot and ought to be cooled down. (This together with chat bots was what I'd known before this post.)
Important from comments: Google's results use AI as well. What to do?
Tumblr media
(Text version of the screenshot):
wrenfea is there no way to turn it off for google searches? I have to use google for work
brightmoontrigon @wrenfea you can add the &udm=14 URL parameter to google searches to remove the AI overview and ad results. udm14.com is one way to do it easily, but you can also do it manually
Y'all I know that when so-called AI generates ridiculous results it's hilarious and I find it as funny as the next guy but I NEED y'all to remember that every single time an AI answer is generated it uses 5x as much energy as a conventional websearch and burns through 10 ml of water. FOR EVERY ANSWER. Each big llm is equal to 300,000 kiligrams of carbon dioxide emissions.
LLMs are killing the environment, and when we generate answers for the lolz we're still contributing to it.
Stop using it. Stop using it for a.n.y.t.h.i.n.g. We need to kill it.

this is just my opinion but i think any good media needs obsession behind it. it needs passion, the kind of passion that's no longer "gentle scented candle" and is now "oh shit the house caught on fire". it needs a creator that's biting the floorboards and gnawing the story off their skin. creators are supposed to be wild animals. they are supposed to want to tell a story with the ferocity of eating a good stone fruit while standing over the sink. the same protective, strange instinct as being 7 and making mud potions in pink teacups: you gotta get weird with it.
good media needs unhinged, googling-at-midnight kind of energy. it needs "what kind of seams are invented on this planet" energy and "im just gonna trust the audience to roll with me about this" energy. it needs one person (at least) screaming into the void with so much drive and energy that it forces the story to be real.
sometimes people are baffled when fanfic has some stunning jaw-dropping tattoo-it-on-you lines. and i'm like - well, i don't go here, but that makes sense to me. of fucking course people who have this amount of passion are going to create something good. they moved from a place of genuine love and enjoyment.
so yeah, duh! saturday cartoons have banger lines. random street art is sometimes the most precious heart-wrenching shit you've ever seen. someone singing on tiktok ends up creating your next favorite song. youtubers are giving us 5 hours of carefully researched content. all of this is the impossible equation to latestage capitalism. like, you can't force something to be good. AI cannot make it good. no amount of focus-group testing or market research. what makes a story worth listening to is that someone cares so much about telling it - through dance, art, music, whatever it takes - that they are just a little unhinged about it.
one time my friend told me he stayed up all night researching how many ways there are to peel an orange. he wrote me a poem that made me cry on public transportation. the love came through it like pith, you know? the words all came apart in my hands. it tasted like breakfast.

the japanese text-to-speech software AITalk and their later A.I.VOICE chose like the most unfortunate name humanly possible for a piece of commercial software that from what i can tell, uses concatenative synthesis instead of deep learning (? well A.I.VOICE 2 seems to use deep learning stuff but it looks like 1 used some kind of sample or waveform based technology) LIKE i understand AITalk is from 2007 and they couldn't have known but A.I.VOICE 1 came out in the year of our lord 2021. were they that attached to the name since its their branding or did they just not see the search engine optimization issue coming. the SEO doesnt seem much better even when you search in japanese. were they unprepared. were they unprepared for the google sludge

this is honestly one of my favorite things about google docs though. The commenting feature which lets you leave digital highlighted notes along the margins of your writing. Whenever this happens, I alter the earlier scene and then leave a note in the margin with my end goal and how many callbacks I want before I reach it
Do you ever write a sentence and then realize “Nah, that’s too self aware for you” and backspace a bunch of times.
