accidentally unfollowed u trying to send an ask i'm soso sorry T-T but also people who rely on chatgpt for uni are so incomprehensible to me partially because i took a quick college course last year to get into my job, social care, and like can you imagine having a carer or smth who didn't know what they were doing because they cheated the entire time they were learning??? but also like you're in an academic setting they're gonna have shit in place to notice plagiarism and they take that so seriously lmao. AI bros are annoying as fuck
Dw bro but SO REALLLL LIKE. I watched the main person I was bitching about for a while and they're a business student who was using chatgpt to pass a sociology test or something 😰😰 NOT a good sign for the businesses of tomorrow

Aether
Third years who just transferred in, how unlucky to change schools in their last year
Runs morning announcements with his sister Lumine
Somehow becomes his class president, seriously he just got here
His vice-president is Wanderer and at first he’s confused as to why
But then he gets to know him and realizes that he isn’t so bad
Has a problem with Ajax, another third year, solely because their first interaction was Ajax trying to pick a fight
Chief editor of the school newspaper, his sister is the Chief writer
They’re really good at recording stories and reporting them
Really popular with the student body, he’s just great at listening and giving  advice
Also really involved in other clubs events, the knitting club had a little workshop once and he made a hat that he gave to Albedo for his sister
Albedo had wanted to go but the art club had a field trip to a limited exhibit and as the president he had to go
For the school festival his class did a drama production with Aether as the prince looking for his sister
Lumine was busy with her class’ event though, so the play ended with him still on his journey but with a lot of new friends
He did manage to convince her to wear an exclamation mark above her head all day, and people could get a stamp from her to spin a wheel for a prize
Worst subjects are geography and math, best subject is history
Group projects with him are really easy, his work is always done first
Venti
The music teacher but he constantly gets mistaken for a student
Used to be a traveling musician but had kind of a Koro-sensei situation with the nameless bard
Controls the morning announcement music, the first month it’s always his music
After band auditions he has the students record for the announcements
Regularly pranks the other staff, once changed Mr.Zhongli’s desktop to a picture of [Venti]
Zhongli is too tech illiterate to change it back himself, Nahida has to help
Genuinely adores his students and is always happy to help/give advice
Actually helps run the Miss Hina advice column with Gorou since he needed and staff supervisor
Venti has no favorite student(s), he thinks they’re all amazing in their own ways and says so every graduation
It feels genuine every time because it is
Xiao
A student teacher, baffling I know
Why is this man in teaching, he seems to hate everyone
Once, his friends picked him up after school because they were going to a concert
Everyone was scared of the supposed biker gang parked out front
Then Xiao came out and started talking to them, he came back around a minute later on his bike
It was, of course, the Yaksha all dining jackets made by Menogias
He gets bombarded by questions the next day
Intimidating aura but he wants to be there for his students like his teachers were for him
It’s no surprise he was a troubled youth, it’s one of the first things you might guess about him, but you’ll remember not to judge a book by its cover once you speak with him
Also he plays the flute
Sometimes you can pass by one of the music practice rooms at lunch and here him playing, sometimes with Venti
He’s shadowing Mr. Venti because he wants to be a music teacher, though he’s also really good with history
Kazuha
Third year, so his last year
Not part of band, but sometimes he joins as a guest
He was a part of band for the first two years, but his friend died over the summer and he just can’t commit to it right now
Childhood friends with Wanderer, though they’ve only recently reconnected because Kazuha gets why Wanderer shut him out in the first place
He hangs out with the gym teacher Beidou, she encourages him to stop by the judo club
She understands he doesn’t want a club commitment right now, but she thinks he needs something to keep him busy
He stops by Friday practices after school
Almost became Lumine’s vice-president for their class but lost out to Gorou
Gorou wasn’t going to run, but he didn’t want Kazuha to have to back out of the position and get asked questions
Has lunch in one of the stairwells with Gorou, Kokomi, Ayato, and Ayaka
When they’re busy with club stuff he’ll wither sit in the music room or in Beidou’s office, depending on if there’s band practice or not
A very good student and absolutely someone you want in your group
Doesn’t have a worst subject but his best subject is language
Heizou
A second year
He’s president of a detective club, they talk about crime shows, podcasts, and novels
Also a bit of a prankster and very hard to catch
Like if you don’t watch him do it you won’t be able to get him in trouble
His co-president Sara Kujo hates this
Wants to be a detective because his childhood friend was killed in an unsolved crime
Last year his club ran a murder mystery scavenger hunt for the school festival
He has been asked no less than 20 times if they’re doing it again this year
His club supervisor is Mr. Neuvillette, he teaches the laws of Teyvat class
He is also not happy with Heizou’s pranks, the the drama teacher Ms. Furina finds them hilarious
Ms. Furina cast him as the detective in this years play, the first years were annoyed that there were no auditions but once they realized he was basically a real life detective they were on board
Speaking of being a real life detective, if you lose something ask him
There is literally a column in the school paper to report lost objects
It’s usually returned within 2 days
Science is his worst subject but he’s still really good at it
Group projects with him are terrifying because he doesn’t finish it until the day before, but he does always get it done
Best subject is literature, really good at analysis
Wanderer
A third year, is often mistaken as a first year
Attends with his sister Raiden who’s a second year
His mother, Ei, is a teacher
First years, including when he was a first year, always avoid him because he looks like a delinquent
He liked that fear because it meant no one would bother him
Ei was worried though, he never really got over the death of his best friend when he was younger
Childhood friends with Kazuha, Kazuha’s grandpa was their neighbor so they were close
Niwa, Kazuha’s grandpa, died around the same time as Wanderer’s first friend whom he’d met at daycare
And he never really coped with it, at first he was really clingy with Kazuha and then he seemed to want nothing to do with him
They’re starting to rekindle their friendship now, Kazuha actually gets him now, as grim as that sounds
Part of the debate club because Nahida, the history and technology teacher, thought his essays were always amazingly persuasive
He joined at first because it let him call people idiots without getting in trouble, eventually he realized he actually enjoyed it
Got into detention once with Ajax because he punched him, to be far Ajax did say “fight me”
The start of a begrudged friendship
Worst subject is gym because he doesn't really try, he only puts in enough effort to not fail
His second worst subject is bio, and his best subject is history
His group work skills are 50/50, on one hand he will not communicate unless something is really wrong but on the other he finishes his work quickly and neatly

It occurs to me that one relatively sympathetic aspect of these people might be that, their founding population having been abducted as small children and raised by an inhuman monster, they might lack a lot of the stupid prejudices that regular humans in a low-tech setting are likely to have if real history is any guide.
Think about what’s going to happen with that first generation. It sounds to me like the dragon abducts them when they’re very young, the better to brainwash them. The dragon is probably both ignorant of and uninterested in a lot of human culture, it just wants to raise up some dragon-worshipping brainwashed thralls. Which is probably going to be bad in a lot of ways, but it also means the transmission chains of a lot of stupid prejudices get broken. There’s no-one around to tell those kids that darker-skinned people are inferior. There’s no-one around to stigmatize left-handedness and force the left-handed ones to hide being left-handed. There’s no-one around to socialize them into complicated and rigid gender roles and tell them men should be in charge. There’s no-one around to tell them they shouldn’t share a washing bowl with a Cagot. There’s no-one around to tell them some people are Untouchables and karmically deserving of low status and suffering and you should take a ritual bath if one of them touches you. The dragon probably doesn’t even know about half that stuff and doesn’t care about most of the other half. The dragon might actually actively discourage a lot of prejudices like this if they do show up, because they’d interfere with its human stock being efficient thralls (“You’re telling me you want to reduce the military effectiveness and productivity of my dragon cult because you don’t want to share tools with people who have a particular surname? Yeah, no, we’re not doing that; any tool that is not personal property belongs to me and will be used by any of my thralls who is doing work that requires it”).
What happens when these kids reach puberty? The dragon probably wants its dragon cult making babies, so it’s probably going to tell them how baby-making works and make it clear it expects them to make some new thralls for it sooner or later, but as long as the thralls are making approximately the right number of babies and aren’t killing each other it probably won’t care much about the details. So... These people are going to start experiencing attraction to each other and sometimes falling in love with each other, and... Some of them are going to fall in love with people of the same sex, and there’s no-one around to tell them homosexuality is wrong. Some of them are going to fall in love with more than one person, and there’s no-one around to tell them they aren’t allowed to have multiple partners, and there’s no-one around to tell them that people who already have a partner are “taken” and off-limits, and there’s no-one around to tell them that if you’re a man another man having sex with your female partner is a huge deadly insult to your honor. The original write-up talks about dragons selectively breeding their human thralls, so there might be significant reproductive control and coercion happening, but it’s probably pretty orthogonal to the sort that happens in patriarchal societies.
This is simplifying in ways that might paint an over-optimistic picture. Even small children may have picked up some prejudices from the societies they spent their first years in. And some of that stuff might get reinvented. Children often detect and react with hostility to difference even without much or any prompting from adults, and I suspect some prejudices of this sort are ultimately rooted in that sort of reflexive xenophobia. And I think at least a rough “men do more of the fighting and heavy labor, women do more of the child-care and less strength-intensive work” division of labor is probably going to emerge, because it’s a natural and logical reaction to physical sex differences in a low-tech context. Though on that note, I can think of a few factors that might work to keep dragon cults more gender-equal than regular human societies:
Dragons likely won’t want their cults getting too numerous. A numerous cult would be harder to control and more likely to develop power centers independent of the dragon. Dragon cults would also be more secure against external threats than other human groups of their size, because they’ve got a giant fire-breathing monster on their side, so they wouldn’t have as much pressure to make sure they’ve got lots of fighters to defend their land (though the dragon would likely be a “tall poppy,” it’s likely that lots of people will want to kill it to stop its depredations and plunder its hoard and have the glory of defeating it, so that’ll partly cancel that out). Put this together, dragon cults might be at least a little less pro-natalist than their regular human neighbors. I mean, they’ll probably still have big families by modern standards because of how many people die young in low-tech societies, they’ll probably still need to have 3-5 children per couple just for replacement rate, but this might make at least a little difference. And high birth rates, large families, and pro-natalism are an important load-bearing pillar of strong gender roles; it’s not an accident that we started treating women a lot better after we invented or popularized vaccination, antibiotics, indoor plumbing, and birth control pills (the first three things made high birth rates unnecessary and even undesirable, the last thing made low birth rates easier to maintain). Compared to other human women, dragon cult women might have more time and energy to devote to things that aren’t making and raising babies.
I think dragon cults are also likely to be socially hierarchical but economically communalistic, with little private property and relatively high social mobility. From the original write-up it sounds like dragons want totalitarian control over their cults, so they won’t want their cults to have power centers independent of the dragon. Dynastic families and sizeable accumulations of private property are power centers independent of the dragon, so the dragon will discourage their formation. In low-tech male privilege societies powerful families and stable inherited property are major bulwarks of patriarchy; they make it important who your father is, and they make it important to avoid family instability that may result in division of the property or otherwise endanger the family’s claim to the property. If patrilineal descent chains don’t matter much, women are likely to have more sexual freedom and by knock-on effects of that more freedom in general and are under less pressure to marry early and produce lots of potential heirs for their husbands.
Finally, the write-up mentioned dragons selectively breeding their human thralls for size and strength, and maybe implied also selectively breeding them for precocious physical maturity. If they’re doing that, dragons might also selectively breed their thralls for reduced sexual dimorphism. From the dragon’s point of view, why wouldn’t you want to double your pool of potential strong fighters? So after two or twenty centuries of selective breeding dragon cult women might have size and upper body strength a lot closer to males. Dragon cults would probably still have some kind of “men do more of the fighting and women do more of the work compatible with having a baby or child in close proximity” gendered division of labor, but reducing sexual dimorphism would tend to weaken gendered divisions of labor and hence gender roles in general.
I mean, we’re talking about a creepy high-control cult here. And “nobody was there to tell them...” would definitely have potential dark sides, like “nobody was there to tell them rape and incest are wrong” and “nobody was there to tell them that an adult shouldn’t casually slap around or beat up a child when they’re angry at them.” They’d probably develop some taboos on that sort of stuff just to keep their society somewhat functional, and the dragon would probably give them rules against the aspects of that sort of behavior that might lower their efficiency as thralls or endanger the viability of the dragon cult, but “basically functional levels of rape, incest, and casual physical abuse of children” might look pretty horrifying (though given what a lot of actual historical societies looked like I’m not sure they’d really be worse on the rape and casually beating up their children fronts than their non-dragon cult neighbors). So this isn’t going to be any kind of utopia. If dragon cultists showed up in a story they’d probably be bad guys. But, like:
“And because they serve dragons, they sometimes get the good stuff. Picture a 15- year-old kid with the physique of Conan, wearing the golden armor of ancient kings and armed with magic spears. The kid is also illiterate, covered in fleas, and thinks that humans were created by dragons.”
I suggest that this kid might be a girl, who has a girlfriend and a boyfriend, in a world where a female person being a warrior and interacting on a footing of easy familiarity and equality with rough violent men and having multiple partners is very much not a regular thing in most human societies. And while from one point of view this person is a brainwashed slave of a giant fire-breathing mammal-like reptile, she can look forward to having a lot more personal freedom than most non-dragon cult women (e.g. the 15 year old farmer’s daughter whose father and older brother she just eviscerated). Would fit into: “And its not hard fascism either.  Their barbarian tribes don't chafe at the collar.  They've believe in their dragon.  And when you stand in front of a dragon, you can see why.” If that girl has some idea of how much less freedom and power she’d probably have if she’d been born into one of the surrounding more normal human societies, that knowledge surely cements her loyalty to her dragon. It’d make the whole thing more insidious in a way.
-----
Aside: the one thing that kind of bugged me about the Goblin Punch post is where it says dragon cultists “never build cities or roofs.” So what do they do when it rains, or is freezing cold, or burning hot? I’m interpreting this as they live in tent-like structures and don’t build permanent houses with thick walls, cause otherwise that bit is just grimderp.

Pretty late asking this question, but did your opinion on Mike Matei change any after the whole "save states and rewinds are for poopheads" thing?
It’s a case where I think there was always the implication that he was kind of a dope, but that was the first time where it actually seemed to be a little... annoying?
Like, yeah. People in AVGN’s circle are going to be “THE OLD WAYS ARE BETTER!” types. It sounds like James is surprisingly tech illiterate when it comes to newer stuff, which is why he stuck to retro games for so long.
That can be charming in a certain light, but what Mike said came off as weirdly aggressive and... like, so the definition of “toxic masculinity” is sort of this gate keeping where the only correct way to do things is by being MANLY and TOUGH and STRONG, right?
Well that’s the way it came off. The angry dad whipping you to “BE A MAN” where his definition of masculinity is this incredibly narrow point of view of human experience. Outdated, cruel, and on some level maybe even abusive.
It’s video games. It’s play. Play is meant to be fun. If you aren’t having fun, change how you play. Overcoming a challenge can be fun, but it’s not the only way to have fun. Look at games like Animal Crossing, or Minecraft, or Harvest Moon. There’s more to video games than proving how manly and tough and strong you are.
The argument could be made about “playing it the way its intended” but Mike’s comment was specifically about the Switch Online SNES app, which adds save states and rewinds. That means Nintendo is giving you permission to use those in Super Mario World, or Puyo Puyo 2, or whatever. And that’s not even touching on games with easy modes (or Celeste’s assist mode).
Or concepts like The Death of the Author, which says that authorial intent is meaningless and the only thing that matters is your personal interpretation of the content. Whatever you think it means, that’s what it means. If you think a game is too hard and you have to cheat in order to complete it, then that’s perfectly acceptable, because we’re humans, and all humans have different abilities, standards, and expectations.
The more I hear about Mike Matei the more he seems like the kind of guy who owns a “There’s a special place for me in hell, and it’s called a throne” t-shirt unironically. Do with that information what you will.

Chase Young Can’t Read
Okay, but do we ever actually SEE Chase reading?  He’s never shown writing.
I know he’s sown looking at Evil Housekeeping in “Judging Omi,” but there is no proof that he was actually reading the magazine.  Magazines have pictures too, and who’s to say that Chase doesn’t just subscribe for the pretty pictures?  Have you SEEN the man’s lair?!
Tumblr media
Further proof of Chase’s illiteracy is in how Chase’s underlings convey messages to him.  One of Chase’s fallen warriors is a Gaelic werewolf that can transform into a crow and play back or show what it has seen and heard from its’ eyes.  In “Hannibal’s Revenge,” “Omitown,” “Oil in the Family,” and others the crow is shown whispering to Chase or sharing a look.  Another scene shows the crow flying back to Chase’s lair, transforming to a warrior, and presumably telling Chase the information it gathered in person off screen, before walking out of the throne room on screen.
It’s one thing to be a spy and not leave a paper trail, but it’s another thing entirely to be a spy and leave your post to convey information  Most spys only leave their posts if their cover is blown, the information they have gathered is too sensitive to document on paper, their assignment has been completed, or a mix of all three.  The fact that the crow repeatedly goes back to Chase to report directly for all messages, no matter how trivial is a bit suspect.  About 99% of the time the Monks do not even notice that the crow is watching them.  Why fly off to report to Chase that they’re on the move?  “Phoning in” and reporting remotely would make more sense to continue the mission of watching the Monks.  The fact that time and again the crow is shown watching the Monks means that this is a recurring, if not ongoing, mission of some importance.
What the Food Tells Us
Tumblr media
“But what about the recipe for Lao Mang Long soup?”  You ask.  Yes, the recipe is written down in a book about Chase, but that doesn’t mean Chase ever wrote or read the book (though he is vain enough he at least knows it exists).  Canon doesn’t go into it deeply enough to form a concrete decision, but Hannibal made the Soup, Chase turned evil and imprisoned Hannibal.  Now Chase makes the soup for himself.  Chase is never shown reading a recipe--why would he?  He’s been making this elixir for the last 1500 years (or more), by now the recipe is routine; Chase has no need to refer back to any written document of the elixir.  Or maybe, he could never read a recipe in the first place?
It is unclear if the Lao Mang Long soup ever spoils as evidenced by “Time After Time, part 2″ wherein Omi hides the soup, and then digs it up over 1500 years later, still steaming.  But most who work with any kind of food, or food prep, or both, know that dating food and packages is mandatory to know how fresh the products are.  Chase is often shown using CANNED soup.  If he’s caning the soup himself, why are there no dates?  Surely one as methodical as he would want to use the oldest batches first.  Without written dates he must have an elaborate system of organization (otherwise it’s like having no soup at all--and Chase says he’s very attached to the soup, as it’s what keeps him forever youthful and pretty [”Master Monk Guan”]).
Chase is making the soup for himself too, so there’s not even a need to list the ingredients on the package.  However, there is no written label--there is only a picture of a dragon on the can.  While this was done to cinematically highlight the fact that each can contains at least one whole dragon (don’t forget this is a TV show for 6-12 year olds), it then questions why Chase would label his elixir in such a way.  Why label your food with a picture of one ingredient instead of writing what the can contains?  It would be like labeling lasagna with a picture of just noodles, or a chocolate cake with just a doodle of chocolate chips.  Why label food in this way, unless you don’t know how to read or write?
Tumblr media
The League of Overcompensating Villains... with Giant Citadels!
Furthermore, much of Chase’s lair has boobie traps and combinations to turn off or activate security systems.  There are no number pads, or combination locks, or physical keys of any sort.  There are only “super old school” “classic” secret levers, buttons, walls, and compartments for Chase to utilize, like in the regular Showdown of “Master Monk Guan,” how Jack opens the front door to Chase’s lair by pushing a hidden button in “Evil Within,” and the various boobie traps the Monks encounter in “Finding Omi” as well as a hidden Wu safe room.  Since Chase is unable to read, an alphanumeric combination or security key is meaningless to him.  Physical key holes are too easy to pick and bypass.  What better way to cover up your lack of literacy than to use really cool, distracting tricks and illusions?  One would have to be really smart to remember all the tricks and hidden items and how to avoid them, right?  Or at least that’s the stereotype.  This elaborate, over the top method of covering up an apparent “lack” is Chase’s modus operandi and he does it constantly throughout the series.
What does it all mean?
Chase not knowing how to read or write would cast him as a poor person in ancient China, as around 500 AD only the sons of Nobles were educated and learned to read and write.  This goes in stark contrast to many who headcanon Chase as the [bastard] son of a nobleman.  Coming from a poor, likely farming, family would make the life of a Monk seem like a step up.  It could also be indicative that Chase is an orphan.  Why strive so hard to achieve and prove your greatness unless you came from nothing?
While the desire to “prove oneself” is universal, it’s usually explored by characters who either have great power and prestige and want to prove themselves worthy of wielding their own power (Marvel’s Thor) or characters who have nothing and want everything because they believe they deserve it in some way (Marvel’s Loki).  The only thing Chase knows for certain about his destiny on either the Xiaolin side or the Heylin side is that he will become a great warrior.  Joining the Xiaolin Order would have been the first step towards receiving military or battle training through the art of Kung Fu.  What he does with that training is up to him.
Can XC Chase Read?
XC Chase is potentially in the same boat as XS Chase.  The biggest difference is that in XC, Chase is shown looking at and reacting to a text only status post on Facelook from Jack (”Who Shrunk Master Fung?”).  While text-to-speech is a thing, it’s unlikely that Chase fully understands how to operate the tech.  Chase dislikes Jack enough that, despite Jack installing the Wifi Chase used to access Facelook, as well as the giant monitor Chase was viewing the status update on, and never adding Jack as a friend, I doubt Chase would have tried to figure out the text-to-speech on his own.  Even if Shadow helped him, she is out of the lair at the time of him reading the status, and also temporarily transformed into a bird with Chase’s magic.
Tumblr media
There is another scene in “Princess Kaila and the Thousand Layer Mountain” where Chase says that great tales will be written and told about his coming victory against the Xiaolin Order, and perhaps he or the cats can read it.  But can the fallen warrior cats even read?  Questions for future victorious Chase to answer.  Chase is also shown crumpling up a resume Jack hands him in “The Laws of Nature.”  If Chase is illiterate it’s just crumpling up a bit of useless trash.  However, it also asserts how little Chase cares about Jack’s credentials and achievements.
To summarize, Chase likely cannot read in the XS canon.  He goes out of his way to cover up this flaw by having intellectual puzzles as security precautions, has all his underlings report verbally, visually, or both, usually in person, and does not label any of his canned foods with words or numbers, instead only using pictures.  His illiteracy is indicative of a life lead by a poor farm boy or orphan who joined the Xiaolin Order as a stepping stone to achieve his destiny of becoming a great warrior.  XC Chase is possibly illiterate too, but there isn’t enough evidence either way to confirm or deny this possibility.
TL;DR:
XS Chase can’t read.
XS Chase goes out of his way to cover up this little fact by having intricate boobie traps throughout his lair.
All of Chase’s underlings report to him in person.
Chase doesn’t label any of his canned food with letters or numbers; only pictures.
Only noblemen were able to read and write in 500 AD China, so Chase was likely a farm boy or orphan.
He then joined the Xiaolin Temple as a stepping stone to achieve his destiny of becoming a great warrior.
XC Chase is likely illiterate too, but there are too many inconsistencies to confirm.
Random Headcanons under the cut:
I’m not saying Chase was kicked out of the Xiaolin Order because he couldn’t read, but what if that was literally the only reason?
Please consider dyslexic Chase.
Remember all those various scenes where Jack asks for Chase’s autograph and Chase just glares at Jack, as if the boy genius knows that he, Chase Young, is illiterate and is taunting him for it.
Chase never responding to emails because he literally cannot.
For that matter, why and how does Chase have an email?!  Who was Jack messaging?????????
Someone writing a really witty and heartfelt love note to Chase, but he can’t read it.
Chase turning Wuya solidly just to read his mail because she can read for some reason???  IDK?????????
Wuya is shown reading a magazine called “Woman”--likely a parody of Womens Day--but finds it too drab and changes it to “Wuya” (“The Citadel of Doom”).
Even if Wuya is in the same boat as Chase and just “reads” magazines for the pictures, she still formed an opinion about the magazine being “drab” and changed the entire thing.  Most people would just get a different magazine.
I guess Wuya took that mag from “drab” to “FAB?”  Amirite?  XDDD
Okay, but please imagine Jack teaching Chase how to read and write.
Also, Omi trying to teach Chase how to read and write, but he’s really bad at it, and Raimundo steps in to help because he’s got the highest reading comprehension.
The Monks are all shown reading and writing at various points throughout the series, but all are shown writing out their ideas for quests in “Hannibal’s Revenge.”
I believe Dojo said this in XS, but “penmanship wasn’t always a strong suit of the old masters.”  Big oof.  However, this means that the Temple will teach literacy, so then why didn’t Chase pick it up?  (more fuel for dyslexic Chase)

why doesn’t the current employment system work?
easy, it’s a half-assed one-solution-fits-all approach made by rich people who have NEVER used the employment search system.
-
How does it work?
You want centrelink? You get assigned a job-search centre, there’s always 4-5 in even small towns now. It’s a lucrative business.
You’re told ‘search for 20-40 jobs per month’ based on your area. They have to be jobs you could reasonably do (one or two assholes made sure the whole system was tightened bc they’d apply for things they had no qualifications for).
These are entered online, on a special governmental site. Failure to locate the right amount gets you a strike, or more than one.
Which is hard because there are only so many jobs in smaller towns, right?
So let’s say you have no luck, you hand in the 20 for that fortnight, and ‘report’ online to centrelink that you are following the rules.
They also make you do mandatory courses such as the 2-day ‘Resume Writing Course’ that you can do up to twice in 6 months. It’s as stupid as it sounds, and you learn nothing but that you hate the place.
Also, 3-day mandatory ‘Communication with People’. How to talk to people. Literally. 3 days of your life gone. Gee, wish I’d done some sort of degree around literally talking to people and using analysis... hmmm...
They do not Recognise Prior Learning, at all. Because each person they make attend gets them more and more money.
-
New rules allow for them to identify a job you HAVE to apply for -even if you must write a new resume and cover letter. Which, in some cases, is a little fair.  Maybe you’re using one from years ago.
New rules can make them demand you call the HR of a certain place in front of them, to prove your resume went in, and to ask about the position. Of course, this will slap you on the Hell No list, but at least they’re satisfied.
New rules allow them to make you change your existing resume -e.g. they can demand you remove your degree/qualifications to make you more attractive to retail employers (always wary of taking on someone who might move on quickly).
That only works for 6 months these days.
- - -
After 6 months, they send you on a Work-for-the-Dole assignment to a local charity.
They’re supposed to do risk assessments, and follow up on allegations of groping weirdoes and pedophilia (looking at you, Salvation Army*). But they don’t. [ *that person who did it was literally the Community Member of the Year until the truth of what the local SA was covering up came to light. Fucking creep of a man, so many flags that Jesus absolved him of.]
That nonsense injured two members of my family directly, as well as others; at the same place, at different times, and both were deemed ‘our fault’. Despite that the first incident involved an unqualified asshole making a teenage boy hold a fridge, then deliberately dropping the truck tray fast so it yanked the ligaments in the kid’s shoulder so badly it took 6-12 months to heal with physiotherapy.
And the second time, a bookshelf held up with STICKY-tape was broken by a customer, and fell off slamming into my knees and feet, causing untold agony... resulting in a fractured patella in one knee and severe bruising/clicking/weird shit that persists even a year and a half later... but that was my fault.
-----------------------
In short, each person is assigned up to 55 hours per fortnight that they have to undertake with a charity of some formation. OR ROADWORK - they can also make you do roadwork. Like they tried to do to the just-healed teenage boy the minute his medical exemption period was up, even though he couldn’t raise his arm all the way yet. It’s Making Money, not Helping People Find Jobs.
They also made an app, that the person attending MUST download (even if you have to delete just about every single other thing on the cheap phone to make room for it).
It’s called Jobapp or some shit. Basically, when you get there the manager or head volunteer (often tech illiterate) HAS to print a QR code for you, and only you.
You sign into the app, this takes a while bc it’s not well designed and cuts out often. Finally, you find the hard-to-locate-and-ambiguously-named part where you can ‘sign in’ as being at your ‘activity’.
If you’re there all day, and you will be, there are Two Codes.
You scan them to separate locations in the app. And boom, you’re registered as there. It only takes one missed QR code or app failure to land you in shit, though.
And then you spend all day cleaning, on the till, arguing with people over op shop items bc they feel certain prices are too high even if it’s less than a third the real price. And you’re not allowed to sit or chill or anything... unless you’re a volunteer. They can get away with murder.
So that goes on for six months, slowly draining the will to live from your bones.
All the while, you still have to do the 20-40 jobs things and find time for their Training Modules that you already did but hey, you’re a moneymaker. Sometimes they will NOT count the training days towards your Total 55hours per fortnight, so you lose the one free day a week you had...
---------------
It sucks... but I think the other thing we should mention is that this doesn’t really exclude any jobseekers.
Disabled? Elderly? Medical Issues? Can’t speak english very well? Other issue?
Get in there. We get paid to supervise your activity!
Like, there are a lot of people doing job seeking activities who are unfit for the position they are forced into. For many reasons.
-----------------
The thing I found laughable was that they could apply for you, without your knowledge, and if that resulted in an interview you HAD to go. If they feel you tanked the interview, they can penalise you...
There are ways to tank an interview, though. Trust me.  Especially for telemarketer interviews, just have an awkward phone manner, like you’re trying but it’s Weird. And boom, no. [Not that there’s anything wrong with that job, but they signed me up for it without my permission and some dangerous clients worked there, I would not have been safe, they didn’t care tho].
Also, you can’t apply for certain positions for someone with a degree. Our ability is measured in the way we respond to the questions and assessment requests... you can force us to apply to them, but trying to write in for us is just ridiculous.
They might also call and call and call anyone on your applied-for list that they directed you to apply for... which of course, can tank your chances. Very annoying.
And if you get a job, on your own merit, they take credit for it immediately. I assume there’s a bonus or something.
- - - - -
The agency I was sent to, MaxEmployment, was actually THROWN OUT OF ANOTHER STATE FOR COMMITTING FRAUD AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT.
So naturally, QLD said ‘yeah, let’s have that one’.
M.E. allegedly used to claim they had held mass training events with 80+ people every few weeks, doing those awful little courses listed above.  Except, on inspection by confused governmental officials..,. they discovered the room would barely hold 5-6 people including a trainer. Therefore, fraud.
Also, M.E. has failed to catch fake-ads (resulting in free 2-hour work ‘trials’ for a certain cafe that went over a year, fraud) and even sent an unaccompanied 15 year old girl to a fucking BROTHEL after identifying a clearly-not-for-an-admin ad for ‘an admin’ at that location.
IT’s always MONEY.
--------------------
If you are in charge of the poor, the ill, the desperate... then it should not be for money incentives. You should get a flat wage and that’s it.
Why? Because then people who are actually able to do the job, and willing to help people, will do it. Not just people who see dollar signs when they look at the tired, the unemployed and the ill.
And they need to actually fire bad people.
Let me tell you about this woman I had to deal with in a 6 month break from my fucking uni degree due to illness. Automatically, they threw me into job seeking.  I didn’t have a voice for like 2 months, but that didn’t matter.
This huge, hulking, rotund potato of a woman, balding ranga and a face as mean as a bulldog’s arsehole... was my caseworker person. She was a nightmare.
I would find 20 jobs, and hand in the sheet, she would yell at me, that I was being smart and she wouldn’t accept that. I once applied for nearly 65 jobs in one fortnight out of desperation, because she kept having my centrelink cut off without warning if I refused to complete another sheet.
The other caseworkers never stopped her. The manager would not hear my complaints or concerns. She could do what she wanted.
And she knew I could not stop her. The one thing about the situation that kept me apart form others there was that, if I absolutely couldn’t take it, my parental unit said we would ‘manage’ until I went back to uni the next year. Others were unable to do that, and so, this absolute cunt of a woman... held sway.
She had no class, no charm and no people skills. She screamed at the top of her lungs at a tiny asian lady who a) didn’t have a great grasp on english at the time, and b) did not understand all the big words this self-important ranga was using just to sound intelligent.
Apparently the solution to ‘I do not understand’ is raise your voice, to screaming, and get angry. NONE of her colleagues even looked up at her.  Jesus, if one of my colleagues was yelling like that I’d have dragged them out of the room by their fucking hair, like what the HELL was that about.
Was she stopped or fired? No. Was she transferred to some unsuspecting town? Yeah.
I don’t trust organisations who will not admit they hired the wrong person, and fire them. It means they’re hiding shit.
--------------
TL;DR - The whole system is a disaster.
They claim more people are employed, but they also count people on those mandatory work-for-the-dole things, which skews the unemployment number to less than it is.
It is exhausting to deal with and its no wonder so many fucking people are so depressed death seems like the only solution.
And it was all thanks to a handful of people rorting the system; the idiots up top went into red-alert levels of panic and upended the system to punish people.
AND THAT’S NOT EVEN FUCKING TALKING ABOUT THE NEW BASICS CARD SYSTEM
which is nonsense
sure, limit what people can get to groceries and certain stores, including op shops or whatevs. can’t get smokes or alcohol on the cards...
have to have ID for the cards...
but like, you think people won’t find ways to get the smokes, drugs and alcohol they want? you’ve just ensured that they either pawn their things, or do degrading acts to get those things...
so give yourselves a moralistic high-five, people who decided this system was a great idea (primarily bc they and their family/social circle will never need to use it), because you’ve cause d so many more problems than you solved...

MacArthur Foundation Announces 26 ‘Genius’ Grant Winners
This has been an emotionally intense year for the poet and fiction writer Ocean Vuong.
In June, his first novel, “On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous,” written as a Vietnamese immigrant son’s letter to his illiterate mother, came out to much fanfare. Not long before publication, Mr. Vuong’s own mother learned she had Stage 4 breast cancer.
Then, earlier this month, he was back from his book tour, and looking forward to the steadying routines of teaching at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, when he got a phone call delivering some startling news.
“I had to make sure they had the right person, because you don’t want to cry and then have them say it was a mistake,” he recalled. “But then the tears came.”
Mr. Vuong, 30, is one of 26 people chosen as 2019 fellows of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. Known colloquially as the “genius” grant (to the annoyance of the foundation), the fellowship honors “extraordinary originality” and comes with a no-strings-attached grant of $625,000, to be distributed over five years.
This year’s fellows, announced Wednesday, include people in the arts who have earned increasing recognition, but hardly household-name status, for work that pushes the boundaries of disciplines and genres. Among them are Annie Dorsen, 45, a theater artist who incorporates artificial intelligence into performances; Valeria Luiselli, the author of the recent novel “Lost Children Archive”; and Mary Halvorson, a guitarist and composer working at the intersection of jazz, rock, folk and other styles.
There are also scientists, historians, legal advocates, community activists and others, all chosen at a moment in their careers when the award might make a difference.
“We are looking for people who have demonstrated what I would call big-C creativity,” Cecilia Conrad, a managing director of the foundation and the head of the fellows program, said.
[See the full list of MacArthur grant winners.]
The youngest fellows, at 30, are Mr. Vuong and Cameron Rowland, an artist who has used objects seized in civil forfeiture, or created by prison labor, to expose systems of racialized exploitation.
The oldest is Mel Chin, 67, an artist whose hard-to-categorize work has ranged from stealth conceptual art interventions on the set of the 1990s television show “Melrose Place” to a 2018 mixed-reality installation in Times Square that simulated a view of the area from underneath rising seas, complete with an overhead nautical traffic jam.
Mr. Chin, who lives in Egypt, N.C., said that the call from the foundation had come soon after he got home from trips to Greenland and Miami for a film he is making about climate change, and was feeling rather morose.
“Of course, my disposition changed immediately,” he said with a laugh, before turning serious.
“I don’t want to use the word ‘responsibility,’” he said. “But this felt like an acknowledgment that maybe after a life’s work, you just need to do more.”
Few honors carry the prestige, and the mystique, of the MacArthur. Potential fellows do not apply but are suggested by a network of hundreds of anonymous nominators across the country, in a range of fields, and then selected by an anonymous committee of about a dozen.
The phone calls — and the stunned reaction they cause — have become the stuff of myth. More than one of this year’s fellows described being struck dumb, melting into their chairs, or wondering if it was a hoax.
While it can seem like a quasi-divine bolt from the blue, fellows described the gratification of knowing that the world — and especially their peers — has been paying attention.
“It’s the most incredible encouragement to keep going, to stay on your track,” Ms. Dorsen said.
The nature of human creativity and its relationship to technology is a theme of Ms. Dorsen’s work, which she calls “algorithmic theater.” In “Yesterday Tomorrow,” from 2018, singers sight-read along as a computer gradually, in a different pattern each performance, transforms the score of the Beatles’ “Yesterday” into “Tomorrow,” from the musical “Annie.”
Creativity itself is also a preoccupation of another fellow, the cartoonist Lynda Barry, though she explores it with more low-tech means.
Best known for the alternative comic “Ernie Pook’s Comeek” and graphic novels like “Cruddy,” Ms. Barry, 63, has also spent decades leading workshops for non-writers, including one pairing students at the University of Wisconsin, where she teaches, with 4-year-olds.
“I’m really interested in what happens when writing splits off from drawing, which is a vestigial language,” she said. “I think both suffer.”
While the fellowship program has no set themes, this year’s group includes a number of fellows doing work in areas heavily supported by the foundation, including climate change and criminal justice reform.
Jerry X. Mitrovica, 58, a theoretical geophysicist at Harvard, uses statistical models to show how melting glaciers will cause uneven rises in sea levels around the globe, because of differences in the Earth’s underlying crust and mantle. Kelly Lytle Hernandez, 45, is a historian at U.C.L.A. who has written about the evolution of the Los Angeles County prison system.
Dr. Lytle Hernandez, who is also the author of what the foundation calls the first significant scholarly history of the United States Border Patrol, said the prize was a validation of the growing body of work by activist historians studying incarceration and immigration detention, which often draws on suppressed or scattered records.
“I hope the fellowship provides an even larger umbrella for myself and other scholars who are doing this kind of movement-driven scholarship to have more flexibility, to have more — you almost want to say credentials,” she said.
Ms. Halvorson, the guitarist and composer, also spoke of the collective nature of her work, and the hope that the fellowship would help build the audience for her genre-crossing music, which she called “not easy listening.”
“When I started playing this kind of music, I never thought there would be that big of an audience for it,” she said. “If anything, I hope I can shine a light on this whole scene.”
As for the financial windfall, some fellows spoke of paying off student loans, saving for family emergencies, plowing it back into their organizations, or just buying themselves space and time.
Sujatha Baliga, 48, the director of the Restorative Justice Project, received the fellowship for her work developing a non-punitive alternative to the criminal justice system that brings survivors and those who have caused them harm together.
It’s an approach she learned about only in her late 20s, after work as a public defender and death-penalty appellate lawyer left her feeling like a cog in a machine. She said she hoped to use the money to write a book, as well as to work on a curriculum that can be used in law schools, to help open the pathway to others.
“This kind of funding, with no strings, means I can just sit down and imagine, ‘What does the next generation of lawyers need to know to help restorative justice flourish?’” she said.
Emmanuel Pratt, 42, the co-founder and executive director of the Sweet Water Foundation, a community organization on the South Side of Chicago that has transformed abandoned buildings and vacant lots into a sustainable farm and cultural center, said he would use the fellowship to cover salaries and to help the group’s planned expansion into housing.
During the call with the foundation, he walked out into a field of sunflowers at Sweet Water’s 2-acre farm. “It was surreal,” he said.
Even beyond the money, he said, the MacArthur is a validation of the idea that there are alternatives to the kind of development-as-gentrification that reigns in Chicago and beyond.
“I don’t do the work to get recognition,” he said. “I do I because it’s a way of life. It’s proving that it’s not just possible, but that another way is already happening. It’s right here.”

A Linguist Explains Why Texting and Tweeting Aren’t Ruining the English Language
As a social media editor, I am Extremely Online, and pride myself on knowing the latest memes and internet-speak. I see how phrases enter the lexicon and travel a similar pathway: used by a small group of people online (often young people and people of color), then spread out to a wider net of people who are also Very Online, eventually reaching those who aren’t on Twitter for 10 hours a day (and, for better or worse, brands).
The phenomena of memes, gifs, and other ways of communicating online are increasingly the subject of serious academic inquiry. There’s already been a dissertation on memes, and another on 4chan, for example. While some may dismiss “doge” and “smol” as insignificant, others know the internet is changing the fabric of the English language daily. Linguist Gretchen McCulloch has been writing about the language of the internet for seven years, and now she’s encapsulated some of that knowledge into a book. Because Internet: Understanding the New Rules of Language , which comes out July 23, breaks down the history of internet language, from the first-known use of “lol” to emoji to memes.
VICE spoke to McCulloch about why she wanted to write a book about internet linguistics, as well as why we shouldn’t worry about emoji “replacing” English. It has been edited for length:
VICE: What made you want to write this book? Gretchen McCulloch: It was a bit weird to say, “Oh, I want to write a book about the internet.” The internet is so fast moving, and a book is so much of an archive that preserves something in a very static form. You can’t just go update it like you could, say, a blog post. I wanted to take on the challenge of writing a book about something that was so fast moving as the internet; another generation, people won’t necessarily know what it was like to be around at this time. Websites decay, websites go down, Geocities went away.
When you write a book, you’re trying to figure out how to distill something that’s living and breathing into a format that’s very static and fixed. At the same time, it’s an opportunity; if you can kind of encapsulate a particular era, then you have that as a sort of historical record. You have it to look back on, even when it eventually becomes a history book.
In terms of why you should read this book now and not 50 years from now: a book is still the best way we have for people to experience something big in the same order. I write a lot of short articles, but each of them have to start with the assumption that people have never necessarily read anything I’ve written, or read anything else about linguistics, or don’t necessarily know anything about the internet. With a book, you can build up for a bigger idea because you have a longer space.
Every so often I see people concerned that emoji will “replace” words and we’ll all be talking in emoticons in the future. In the chapter on emoji in Because Internet , you say there’s no reason to fear that because emoji are not a language. So what are they? My favorite analogy for emoji in terms of what they’re doing in communication is that they’re akin to a gesture—say, a thumbs up or a middle finger. We gesture all the time but we don’t really think about what we’re doing when we do it. My podcast co-host, Lauren Gawne, has done a bunch of research on this.
Thinking about emoji as gesture explains a lot about how they caught on so quickly. There are systematic ways people use gesture. One big distinction is that some gestures have conventional names and some don’t. A thumbs up, or the middle finger, or a wink has a name. You know what the gesture looks like. But if you were to describe your travels, you’re probably going to make gestures to describe your trip. But those gestures don’t have conventional English names. Maybe you pointed, maybe you used your open hand—you could’ve done a bunch of things. We don’t have names the way a thumbs up is a thumbs up is a thumbs up.
This is one of the distinctions you can make in terms of emojis. Some emojis have iconic names and they’re used specifically as emojis. You have the winking face, the thumb and index finger on your chin—that’s a specific thing that has an additional meaning it brings when you say an utterance. It’s used as its capacity in emoji to change something about what you’re saying, to change something about the meaning of what you’re saying.
And then you have emojis that are more of a literal illustration, like a birthday cake. You don’t have to have any “emoji fluency” to interpret that the birthday cake is a birthday cake. You have to have a cultural fluency of what a birthday cake is, but there’s nothing special about that emoji. Whereas the thinking face emoji requires an “emoji competence” to interpret.
Some emojis have a specific “extra” meaning—like the “tears of joy” emoji, which someone could interpret as crying if they are not “emoji fluent.” If you think of them in this kind of relationship to gesture, then the different types of functions that emerged have make a lot more sense. This also means that—we gesture along with our speech, and that doesn’t mean we don’t talk. They have a mutually-beneficial relationship.
Something that wasn’t really covered in Because Internet —maybe it will be in a future edition!—is the rise of voice memos and smart devices like Alexa and how they impact internet linguistics, or linguistics overall. I thought about whether I should include a discussion on this in the book. I decided not to because a lot of what people are doing with voice tech at this moment is giving commands to a machine. You’re saying, “Set a timer for five minutes.” That’s a user interface, that’s not a conversation. Even things we talk about conversational design is a different kind of user interface. I’m not talking about the design of menu buttons in the book, either. Not talking about voice commands like, “Set a timer for five minutes” is the same as not talking about the graphic design of your timer app where you press a button to set a timer.
It’s an interesting space. That’s something I really hope they’ll be more research about in the next few years because I think there are people using voice memos for communication. There’s been a little bit of research about that so far, especially refugee populations because some of them are illiterate, or they don’t have keyboards that support their languages. So, they’re using voice memos because it’s difficult for them to communicate with each other otherwise. It’s easier for them to use recorded voice, which is a really interesting use case.
Do you think we’re going to eventually sound the same, is our vocabulary going to merge as we all spend time online? Will there be a death of regional slang? This has been a constant prediction that has never actually been borne out. Over time, there’s been people thinking that the rise of various kinds of mass media will lead to the collapse of different regional ways of talking. Some of the early dialect surveys from the 1800s featured people saying, “Well, now we have newspapers so people aren’t going to talk the way that they used to.” A few decades later it happened with the radio, then with the television, and now with the internet.
It’s an understandable type of impulse, but we haven’t seen it with any other types of mass media. I think it’s probably overblown. There are definitely some slang terms that can spread via the internet. There is internet-based slang, while other slang terms are regional or local or age-based, or generational. Those slang terms are passed along through other means. You’ll see internet-based slang may have specific spelling, or include emoji or emoticons, that are based on the writing format itself. An example is “smol”—that’s an internet-based slang not attached to any region that spread through the internet.
Finally, is there an internet linguistic trend you hate, like a slang term or meme? What really gets me is people dismissing internet languages. The people that are creating it are doing so consciously and intentionally and creatively. It’s really easy to say, “Oh, well, the kids are doing something that I don’t understand, therefore, they’re not doing anything important.” What annoys me is the annoyance over internet languages itself. It’s easy to dismiss something as laziness, when in fact, it often takes more effort to punctuate exactly how you want to convey a particular tone of voice online.
This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.

Can i put insurance on a old mobile home ?
I have a 84' model mobile home but i paid to have it remodeled so it's very nice on the inside. Well i want to rent it out so i want to put insurance on it in case a fire or etc. happens to it while it's being rented out . But can i put insurance on a mobile home that old ? and can i put as much as i want or does the insurance only cover how much it's worth ?
Good insurance companies for renters insurance in Florida?
I live near Jacksonville in Florida where State Farm does not provide renter's insurance. 1. What companies are good for renter's insurance in Florida? I will need coverage for Hurricanes also since I am in Florida. Geico gave me a rate of 131/year or about 11$ per month with a deductible of 100$. 2. Should I take an inventory of all my personal valuable items(bed, computer, chair/table), send copy of receipts/photos to the insurance company for their records as evidence that I have N items whose total value is M$ before I buy renters insurance from them or I should take an inventory and keep it in a safe place for my records in case i have to submit any claims later on? 3. By replacement cost coverage used in insurance policy ,does it mean if a laptop purchased worth 900 before five years had a config of 1.7GHz, 4GB RAM, 500GB disk and a claim is filed now(five years after its purchase) with a purchase receipt of a laptop for the same/similar config(but, whose cost would be 650 as tech products come down in price typically after five years and more so for an outdated config/model), that will be honored? Or, I could get any laptop worth 900(cost of original laptop) today and claim reimbursement for it from the insurance company? I am guessing it is the first scenario, but can someone please clarify? 4. Since my total assets are less than 5K and I don't have a car, is choosing a low deductible of 100$ a good idea? Or, I should hike to bring my premium down? 5. For items, like clothes, utensils I don't have any receipt since they are old(more than three years). Will that be OK in case I have to file a claim? The clothes are mainly 15-20$ pant/shirts I got from Walmart. Thanks""
How does health insurance work?
Forgive me for being financially illiterate, but I've never had anyone to teach me these things even in school. I don't really understand how health insurance works, like, at all. I am sick, and I rely on family health insurance to pay for my treatment, which my dad pays for. But eventually I will have to pay for my own health insurance. What I've gathered from what I've read about it is that you are usually not eligible for many types of health-insurance if you have a pre-existing condition. What does this mean, though? Does that mean that because of my illness, I will not be eligible to get insurance? How do other sick people get insurance? Forgive my stupidity, no one has ever tried to teach me these things.""
Is this covered under home owner's insurance?
We have been doing A LOT of work on our house (getting it ready to sell), and we've paid for basically everything (even things that would've clearly been covered by insurance). However, this problem is one I'd rather not pay for if it can be avoided. There was apparently a leak under our shower and it caused some fairly serious rot under the floor. We were unaware of the leak. The carpenter who came says that there will be some fairly extensive work necessary on the shower itself, not just the rotted wood (which will be easy and fairly inexpensive to replace). Will my home owner's insurance policy cover that?""

To sum up, I am quite responsible for a male my age. Please do not be rude in your responses I appreciate your help PS. the car that I would be driving is a Toyota Camry 2005 (all paid for). I also live in the state of MD""

Questions about insurance in NJ?
I just got my probationary license in NJ, and have a couple of questions about insurance. My parents have put me on their insurance plan and today i was given two POI cards-- one for each of their cars. Now, the problem is that I mostly plan to drive my grandmother's car. She lives with us and is getting to the point where she does not drive much anymore. She was told by her insurance company that i do not have to be put on her plan because we live in the same house, but i'm just curious how i would go about proving that i am insured if i ever got into an accident in her car. Can i just hold on to a copy of my POI from one of my parent's two card (in my wallet) to show a police officer, or do I need something specifically for that car? Thank you for the help :)""
Want to cancel my whole life insurance?
Back in July 09, I let my stepmother's boyfriend create a life insurance policy for me. He works as an agent for New York Life, and since I know nothing about insurance, I just let him take care of everything. For personal reasons, I want to cancel the insurance. I will get something else, probably term, very soon. I just still know nothing about insurance, so I have a few questions about my policy. I do have whole life insurance, so I should be able to get some money back, right? Currently, I have a $50k plan, and I pay just under $50 a month. I got this policy when I was 18, so the monthly cost seems a little high--especially since I have no dependents or debt. If I die tomorrow, I could still get a really nice funeral (not that I want one) and have it all payed in full from the money I have from my inheritance. Was I ripped off or is this pretty standard? Online, it says my Net Cash Value is $37.97. Is this the money I get back if I cancel? It seems low--it's only about 3.2% of the total amount I've paid. I was expecting some amount closer to 10%. Ideally, I'd like to cancel without talking to my agent. Is there any way I could do it through a general agent or online?""
My car insurance company have doubled my quote after claiming they made a mistake. Can they do this?
I changed my address about 6 months ago and was pleased to see that, although there was an increase, the increase on my insurance wasn't massive. I recently called to get a quote on putting my girlfriend on the insurance as a learner driver and they have now said that as they didn't process the change of address form properly before they are doubling my insurance quote. I am confused by this as I live in an incredibly secure, gated property and I am wondering if, as they have admitted the mistake, they are able to do this out of the blue like this?""

Garage fire insurance?
My parents garage caught fire this weekend. It started in one of the cars and burnt the entire thing down pretty much. Two cars, a boat, and a camper were lost in the fire. Now the insurance company (Farmers) is trying to say that none of those are included under home owners insurance because they have their own plates. The cars is semi-understandable because they have their own insurance, but the boat and camper don't. Beside the fact I'd like to say how crooked this is, I'd like to ask a question. Now the boat hasn't been registered in two years. Because of this we have been told by another insurance company that it should be covered considering it is there because it's not being used. Anyone out there have any idea if this is true or not?""

Should I notify my car insurance company if I paid for the fix myself?
I had a minor car accident in a Costco parking lot last weekend. I was backing out my parking lot; the other guy was also backing out. Unfortunately, we didn't see each other... Anyway, this seems to be a 50-50 accident. The damage to the cars are moderate and we agreed on just fixing ourselves. So no personal information was exchanged. I got an estimate today. The cost for fixing my car is not cheap but still lower than the minimal requirement for accident reporting in California. It is also lower than my insurance deductible. So I plan neither to report to DMV nor to file a claim. But one friend of mine suggested that in this case, I should still notify (but not to file a claim to) my insurance company. His argument is that the other party can still come back and sue me (if he is a freak). While we didn't exchange information, the other party may have remembered my license plate number so theoretically he could find out all other information about me. But I am not sure if notifying the insurance company will affect my premiums. What do you think?""
Would you not get insurance for flea market?
Yesterday I asked about getting insurance and got great answers, but the county told me that I only needed the liability insurance with their name on it. My insurance company said in order to get that, I needed to also have each vendor show proof of insurance. The county said I didn't need that and someone else we know said we didn't need to have that either. I've got a call into my insurance company to ask them if that's something they will make me have in order to get the liability, but do you think we can just add them as an additionally insurance off our house liability insurance for this? I'm guessing that will cover me if someone gets hurt on the property, but I'd be taking a risk if someone gets hurt from a product being sold. Do I have this right? Do you think my insurance company will allow this?""

Best insurance company to work for?
I live in Southern California, I have been looking for work since I moved here from France. I posted a general sales resume on careerbuilder.com and have since been spammed by insurance agencies. Some have been good companies like State Farm and Farmers. Some have been less, like Colonial Life and Axa advisers. I believe Axa wanted me for a commissioned investment broker position. I didn't pass the personality test for State Farm, but I can try again in a year. I will have a strategy and research next time. State Farm has 9 month paid training, a huge signing bonus at the end and would be an excellent opportunity but it isn't for right now. What I did learn through all of this, especially from Colonial Life is that the insurance licenses aren't that hard or expensive to get. I'm thinking of getting life, health and auto. Does any one know of companies that have non-independent, salaried agents? I would like a commission, but not the 100% commission based model of Colonial or Axa. I also don't want to cold-call or drop off 180 envelops a week like Colonial demands. I don't want to be independent for the moment, although that is possible in the future with a good company like Farmers or State Farm. Right now I could work as a salaried sales person through an independent agent or direct hire. What is the best way to get on-board?""

Car insurance very expensive?

They told me that after 6 months it would go down but I don't think it will go down much. I have a 1994 accord lx 4 door. I don't see why it costs so much for insurance. I just started driving in December but the car is listed under my mothers name with me as a driver and her as the primary. She has been driving about 15 years and has a good record. We have full coverage because the last checked for us and this actually costs less then the lesser coverage for some reason. I was thinking about changing insurance because I think it is overpriced. Can anyone offer any advice? Such as maybe Whether this is actually a normal rate to pay? Or what other insurance I should try out

We've only focused on the employee's entries and the credits into the group insurance premiums collected liability account for said deductions. Now, at the end of the year, preparing the W2 forms, I'm at a loss for how to treat this. Is the amount over $50,000 added to the wages, tips and compensation for the income tax paid on it? My grandfather bought me whole life insurance (paid up in full) when I was an infant and then made my father the owner. I am the insured. My father and I are no longer on speaking terms and I want ownership of my life insurance. Because I am 23, shouldn't the policy have become mine when I became an adult? I mean, it's not like I ever signed anything when I was a baby. If something were to happen to me, he would be the beneficiary - that's not something that I want. Is there legal precedent for me to regain control? Is there any situation in which I would NEED to be the owner of my life insurance, so that I can tell him that he must transfer ownership to me?""
Health insurance?
is there any other form of low income insurance in south carolina besides medicaid? im 19 with a baby. i cant work because i dont have anyone to take care of the baby and cant afford daycare. i rely on my parents support. also i live with them. my baby is on medicaid but i am no longer eligible because of my age and i am not disabled
What car has the cheapest insurance for a 17 year old new driver?
looking at cars, i would like something that looks alright like a clio etc""
How much do you personally pay for car insurance a month?
just wondering. thanks! :)
Need help with a question about car insurance quotes.?
Is it legal for someone else to get an insurance quote for you without your permission? The person called and told the insurance company they were cars he was thinking of buying. Neither car is in his name and neither owner gave express permission for him to ask for this information.
Should i tell my parents about the car accident i got into?car insurance question?
I got into a small car accident. I bumped into the car(98 avenger) in front me on the way heading to school. It was a acquaintance that i knew in high school.well we didn't get the insurance involved,we exchanged information. there's a small dent on his bumper i thought i could pay him off out of pocket with out my parents knowing since they've been trying to find a new car for a while now we even went to a dealership the day of the accident,i dont want to look irresponsible. but the trunk of his wont open. He went to a place to get an estimate they would charge him about 1,700$ which is wayyy more than i expected. I called other places around my area to see if they can fix the trunk and they basically said they to see the condition its not bad it just can't open.being a unemployed college student its hard to find money to pay of the pocket,so i was thinking of just asking my parents what happened, only if the body shops around my area are to expensive to pay. I know im under my parents insurance name but i wasn't sure at the time would the insurance company pay for all of it or would i need to pay out of pocket?would it go up?. need advice or suggestions this situation had been bothering a lot. dont know much about car insurance any additional information would be appreciated!""

Bitcoin is ‘Financial Dynamite’ – Saifedean Ammous (Interview)
Bitcoinist spoke with Saifedean Ammous, assistant professor of economics at Lebanese American University, Bitcoin economist, carnivore grill-master, and author of the new book, The Bitcoin Standard.
I think Bitcoin is the most advanced and best form of money ever invented.
–Saifedean Ammous
Bitcoinist: First, why did you decide to write The Bitcoin Standard?
Saifedean Ammous (SA): I found myself spending more and more time explaining and writing about the economics of Bitcoin to people as interest grew, and many friends would ask me what I think. I decided it would make sense to have my thoughts collected in one place and started working on that. I envisioned it being a brief book, but once I started writing it, I enjoyed it so much and got so engrossed in it, it quickly mushroomed to 300 pages.
Bitcoinist: As an assistant professor of economics, what do you think Bitcoin can be compared to as far as human inventions go?
SA: I think it’s the most advanced and best form of money ever invented. Money isn’t new, and we’ve had it before, but Bitcoin may have just perfected it by creating the first strictly scarce commodity with a fixed supply. It is something quite unique, and while many analogies exist, they will likely only capture one aspect of it.
One particular analogy I like is to think of it as financial dynamite, or gunpowder. In a world where everyone is using primitive sticks and stones, whoever has dynamite first can dominate the others.
Similarly, in a world where everyone is using crappy government-controlled and censored money whose supply is expanding, anyone who has unstoppable hard digital money is at a huge advantage.
Bitcoinist: Your book explains how money technology took many forms throughout history, from seashells to gold, etc. What properties does Bitcoin possess making it the best money technology for the Information age?
SA: The most important for me is the fixed supply, which makes Bitcoin the first truly scarce liquid asset. We can always make more of anything else on earth if we dedicate more resources to it, but we will never have more than 21 million bitcoin.
One of my favorite economists, Julian Simon, had written of how all natural resources are best understood as products of human time, and not resources, because more of them can always be made. The only truly scarce resource according to Simon is human time, whose allocation into the production of material things can always produce more of them.
Humans have always sought the monetary media whose supply is hardest to expand in order to use them as the store of value they produce with their time. But all these media of exchange were imperfect because their supply is constantly expanding, while of course the human time that created the value is finite. In other words, the fruits of your labor will be devalued once they go into a store of value whose supply is increased.
It is mind-boggling to imagine the implication of finally having a store of value that is also strictly scarce, like human time, with no possibility for increased supply devaluing the value stored inside it.
Bitcoinist: The pace of tech adoption has been accelerating from the 19th century onwards, with smartphone technology now only taking less than a decade. Where is Bitcoin right now on this curve? How long will it take to ‘go mainstream?’
SA: As an Austrian school economist, I do not think we can make accurate timeline predictions in matters of human action. It could take a year or one hundred, for all I know, as it depends on the actions of billions of humans.
Bitcoinist: What’s your take on the whole “Blockchain not Bitcoin” mantra we often hear from the likes of Jamie Dimon and traditional finance?
SA: A silly diversion and coping mechanism, an avalanche of pointless scams, a flood of stupid easy money being spent on worthless vaporware.
The only blockchains that matter other than Bitcoin are Bitcoin testnets.
Bitcoinist: Even the World Gold Council acknowledged that Bitcoin could undermine central banks. Are they scared? Do you think they will openly attempt to fight Bitcoin, or will they start buying it themselves?
SA: I can’t speak for their psychological state, but I think we will see a variety of approaches among countries to Bitcoin. The more computer-illiterate governments (likely the same ones that thought they could stop the internet) will likely attempt to ban it.
But I think that the more enlightened among them will understand the immense opportunity here, the important advancements, and be more open to it. In the end, it makes far more sense for bureaucrats and central banks to take the path of least resistance and try to own some Bitcoin than try to fight it. As soon as some central banks have done that, it will get the others to start considering more seriously because the last thing you want is to be the last one arriving at a new gold rush.
Bitcoinist: What do you see as the biggest threat to Bitcoin? Central banks, governments? Infighting within the community? Something else?
SA: Arguably governments and central banks are the most serious threats, as they could make life difficult for Bitcoiners in many places around the world, even though their attempts will likely be futile in the long run.
I don’t think that anything happening in the community matters in any meaningful sense, as the rules of consensus are largely immune to politics and drama.
Bitcoinist: What’s your opinion of the Bitcoin Cash hard fork? Was it an ‘attack’ on Bitcoin as many claim?
SA: I wouldn’t dignify it enough to call it an attack on Bitcoin as it hardly did anything other than slow down payment processing for a few weeks as it took some hashrate away. This, in typical Bitcoin style, turned out to be a positive by showing us the transaction fee market working successfully. I view it as a scam and an attack on people new to the space and those who do not understand Bitcoin’s value proposition. Sad, but an inevitable part of growth.
Bitcoinist: With the surging popularity in ICOs, it seems startups have realized that they can essentially ‘print money.’ Could Bitcoin be replaced by a potentially superior coin? Besides its first-mover advantage, does Bitcoin possess properties that can’t be replicated?
SA: Yes, immutability and the absence of a third party in charge of it. The fact that Bitcoin possesses this property is absolutely astounding, and it is not something that can be installed like an app, as the charlatans behind ICOs and altcoins seem to suggest.
Bitcoin has already gone through 9 years of growth out in the wilds of the internet, mostly without a central planner in charge of it after its creator disappeared. It grew because it offered utility to enough users and developers to keep maintaining it.
It has weathered attacks and hacks and “community conflict” and plenty of powerful interests and questionable characters trying to bend it to their will. After all of this, Bitcoin can indeed claim to be immutable. Once it became clear Bitcoin was successful at doing this, then anyone who was interested in an immutable digital hard money could use it.
There would be absolutely no reason to build an alternative that would not have this immutability when Bitcoin is already there, since Bitcoin is an open protocol and not a good. In the same exact way there is no reason to build a new internet to communicate with others.
Just like there is no market demand for a smaller internet knock-off, there was never any real demand for a smaller, unsafe, unreliable, untested, new Bitcoin alternative.
As a result, no other coin could ever compete with Bitcoin on the free market without active promotion. Hence, if we look at the world of altcoins today, you would find that every single one has a small group of people actively marketing it, promoting it, writing ridiculously overhyped nonsensical puff pieces about it in the press, as well as coding it and mining it.
In every single altcoin, it is trivial to see how a small group of people controls it. It is absolutely laughable that any of these coins could ever lay a claim to being immutable and decentralized. Ethereum can hard fork at the whim of a few developers, as we’ve seen repeatedly. Monero can perform hard forks without mining equipment manufacturers even finding out, such is the extent of its decentralization! I could go, but the crux of the matter is:
If your currency is not immutable and decentralized, then the entire sophisticated blockchain structure that you have copied for it is completely unnecessary. You can do whatever else it is you want to do without having to burn all this electricity into mining. This is cargo cult engineering, where things are included not for any rational purpose, but in order to imitate the rituals of Bitcoin. All of these other coins are growing now because we are in the stage of the US Dollar business cycle where easy money is very widely available, and easy money is stupid money. But stupid money can’t last forever, it will either stop being stupid or stop having any value.
Bitcoinist: You’ve recently criticized Stern School, NYU professor Nouriel Roubini for his anti-Bitcoin stance and apparent schadenfreude in light of the recent drop in Bitcoin price. What is your main argument against his ideas? Is academia as a whole lacking in their understanding of Bitcoin right now?
SA: Roubini is a propagandist, not a scholar, and his hysteria over Bitcoin is a joy to behold for us Bitcoiners. Had he had a shred of academic or intellectual integrity, he would clearly spell out what are his criteria for Bitcoin failing or succeeding and then approach it with an open mind, and see how matters unfold and then revise his views. For instance, when I first heard of Bitcoin and could not make much of sense of its technical details, I was naturally skeptical it could work. But I did consciously make an effort to specify what would be the things that would cause me to revise my skepticism.
As the value of the network rose very quickly, and much higher than I anticipated it rising, I had to revise my initial position that this network would likely remain a fringe network for nerds online. As Silk Road collapsed and yet Bitcoin continued operating with barely a dent in its transaction numbers, and as its price continued to rise, this forced me to revise my idea that Bitcoin would be mainly used for dark markets. If you cannot come up with scenarios that would challenge your position and force you to change it, you are being emotional, not rational.
Roubini has spent years celebrating every single price drop in Bitcoin. The lack of self-awareness here is absolutely astounding. Would he be willing to specify a price at which he would admit that Bitcoin succeeded? He has been claiming Bitcoin failed with every price drop from $58 to $6000. If Bitcoin failed when it dropped to $58, what did Roubini think when it rose to $580? $5,800? If the price of a Bitcoin rises to a million dollars and then drops to $900,000, will he also be celebrating Bitcoin’s failure?
Of course, he does not have to use Bitcoin’s price as his metric for its success, but if he celebrates it dropping as a sign of its death, it is an embarrassingly emotional and childish mistake to not then step back and admit he was wrong when the price rebounds. But, then again, you should expect nothing better from someone who works for the IMF and similar Keynesian rackets. Their entire world runs on government money, so do not expect them to see much value in any alternatives.
Bitcoinist: One major criticism of Bitcoin is that it’s too slow and can’t scale to compete with the likes of Visa and MasterCard for everyday transactions. How do you see Bitcoin overcoming this hurdle?
SA: Second layer payments. This is one of the key points of my book: Bitcoin’s blockchain transactions cannot be compared to consumer payments, because it is far too slow for that and takes minutes to confirm. But more importantly, because it offers final settlement, meaning payments clearing without any remaining counter-party risk, in less than an hour. It is more similar in that regard to final clearance payments between financial institutions and central banks.
We can already see this happening as most exchanges, payment operators, and exchanges that deal with Bitcoin are beginning to batch their transactions, and clear most of them offline. We can see the bitcoin on-chain transactions, but arguably there are around ten times as many transactions now clearing off-chain, on exchanges and other websites.
In this regard, the Bitcoin Standard is already emerging online, as Bitcoin becomes more and more to look like the reserve currency of the internet.
The simplest answer to your question is that all of the current payment technologies that exist over government money can be used over Bitcoin, if Bitcoin reserves underpin the institutions using them and the Bitcoin network is used for settlements.
The more sophisticated and accurate answer is that the next decades will witness innovations in payments built over Bitcoin, tailored to the strengths of Bitcoin, and my bet would be that they will eventually be far more advanced than the current state of the art payment networks built over decrepit government monopolies that have been protected from competition for decades. The Lightning Network might just be the beginning of these innovations.
Bitcoinist: How important is price in Bitcoin? Do you check it everyday? If so, any predictions for this year?
SA: It is important because the price is Bitcoin’s Trojan horse for world domination.
People will buy Bitcoin for the financial gains, and most won’t realize they are voting with their wallets and self-interest to build a world based on peace and cooperation, even if that conflicts with their own political ideals.
Having said that, the short-term movements in price are really not important nor are they predictable. My interest in Bitcoin is far more long-term, and as an Austrian school economist, I know better than to make price predictions!
Bitcoinist: Would you consider yourself to be a “Bitcoin maximalist”? Also, I’ve noticed quite a few Bitcoin ‘hodlers’ advocating a carnivore lifestyle. What’s the connection there?
SA: Yes. My take on the intersection of Bitcoin and carnivory is that it takes a special kind of person to emerge from decades of government propaganda and Keynesian stupidity and be able to understand the sound economics behind Bitcoin.
You are subject to social and professional ostracism for diverting from the standards of the cult, and it takes a special kind of person to manage to shrug all of that off and still see clearly what’s right and what’s wrong.
But once you’ve done that on one topic, you become open-minded on any other topic, and it becomes easy for you to contemplate the idea that, yes, a lot of the things you were told are wrong. It turns out it isn’t just modern economics that is full of garbage.
Nutrition as well, is a load of nonsense, and just like Keynes, it had its own con artist, Ancel Keys, who has popularized the absolutely criminal idea that animal fats are dangerous, that carbohydrates are essential, that 6-10 servings of grains a day are necessary, that seed oils are not just edible but also healthy, and so on. Naturally, the kind of people who will fall for Keynes’ ridiculous ramblings masquerading as science will have no problem falling for Keys’ ridiculous ramblings. These people are not likely to be early Bitcoiners or carnivores.

Azteco: The easiest way to buy Bitcoin
Azteco: The easiest way to buy Bitcoin
The image featured above is a mural from the beginning of the film Idiocracy.
The image sums up the difference between the Azteco/Ethical Bitcoin world and the computer illiterate world of KYC/AML: the “Idiocracy World”. Our world on the other hand is a future of monorails, prosperity and fantastic technology. The KYC/AML future is Brawndo.
Akin Fernandez AKA “Beautyon”
Crypto Insider once again welcomes Akin Fernandez (also known as Beautyon). This time we discuss his current project that is aiming to feed hyperbitcoinization – Azteco and all things related to it, including the concept of “Ethical Bitcoin” and the relationship between State and Bitcoin. Our previous conversation with Akin was on net neutrality and can be read here.
* * *
For the readers, can you sum up how Azteco works?
You go to your local supermarket phone or corner store, and buy an Azteco Voucher, in the same way that you buy a “Top Up” voucher for your “Pay as You Go” mobile phone. You put the 16 digit voucher number on the voucher into the Azteco website, along with the address you want the Bitcoin sent to, and then seconds later, the Bitcoin arrives. Everyone who tries Azteco gasps when they realise how simple it is, and they ask, “Why can’t everything be as simple as this?”. Every time we hear this, we know we’re on the right path.
This delivery model is correct, and Azteco services a billion dollar addressable market. Around 70% of phone customers in Western Europe and China use prepaid SIMs with the figure rising to over 90% for customers in India and Africa. 23% of cellphone users in the United States were using prepaid service as of 2011, a share that’s expected to rise to 29% by 2016. Each one of these 350 million users is a natural Azteco user;  they do not have bank accounts or credit cards, are used to mobile top ups by voucher or refill card, and all of them use remittance services to send and receive money. They will have no problem understanding Azteco, and we will serve them all, opening the world of Bitcoin powered e-commerce to them. All they need is Samourai Wallet to send the Bitcoin to and they are instantly onboarded.
How would you sell someone on the voucher concept over, say, an ATM/p2p transfer approach?
We know this model is superior to the ATM model for several reasons. First, from the vendor perspective, we don’t have to manufacture ATMs and deliver them. We can set up new vendors in minutes, anywhere on Earth, and the vendors can use existing POS systems to issue our vouchers. Furthermore, if our vendors have multiple outlets, they can use our Sub Vendor system to turn each of their stores into outlets at zero extra cost.
If a vendor with ten stores wants to sell Bitcoin with ATMs he has to buy 10 ATMS. With Azteco, he doesn’t even have to buy one, and can sell Bitcoin through all of them. Azteco vouchers can redeem to any Bitcoin address, and you don’t have to physically appear in front of a machine to buy a voucher. All of the advantages and ease of use with Pay As You Go Top Ups transfer 1:1 with Azteco.
We are the easiest, most frictionless of all Bitcoin services. Compared to LocalBitcoins, that has very large volumes, Azteco is very easy, and has a consistent UX. We will easily be able to match Local Bitcoin’s volume, and create a high level of brand loyalty. Very soon, micropayments are going to be  widespread with Lightning, The vast majority of Bitcoin users will be buying small amounts of “Disposable Bitcoin” for day to day use in services on line, in the same way that they top up phones as and when needed.
I understand you’re London-based. Have you faced any challenges from UK financial authorities regarding the transmission of Bitcoin?
Britain has many Bitcoin companies operating in it, including Blockchain.info. It is a country full of expertise and great connectivity. We don’t treat Bitcoin as money, but instead, correctly treat it like a phone top-up. We don’t have custodial accounts and so we are not subject to the rules required for custodial businesses. It is very important to characterise Bitcoin correctly. When you make a Bitcoin transaction, you don’t transmit anything; you make a digital signature on the Bitcoin database, that is verified by others who check that the signature is valid. This is in no way similar to transmission of anything, and Bitcoin is not money, it is a database. Thankfully the understanding of this is spreading, and we’re finding we don’t have to do as much explaining as we used to.
Everyone should try to use the correct terms when attempting to describe how Bitcoin works, and avoid analogies, because it’s poor analogies that spread confusion. There is no such thing as “transmission of Bitcoin”, and companies that use Bitcoin are not “Money Transmitters”. Most importantly, Bitcoin is not money (even two judges in the USA have determined this in separate jurisdictions), and it isn’t ever transmitted. As I’ve said several times, the country that accepts the reality of Bitcoin will be set to make a fortune and secure the prize of being the centre of global Bitcoin development and entrepreneurialism  —  the alternative is to signal that Britain doesn’t want anything to do with the most significant innovation since the internet headquartered in London.
Complaining that all tech companies are in Silicon Valley is meaningless. Britain has the chance to capture Bitcoin and secure it’s global leadership position for decades, or they can cede this to another country. It is entirely up to them. Either way, Bitcoin is going to happen and totally dominate, and somewhere is going to be the centre where all the brains and money — and revenues — are concentrated.
Are you able to comment on a roadmap?
I can say that once we start rolling out, our spread will be solid and constant. Our outlets will spread quickly, as each vendor can open sub vendors. We’re very excited because we will not only sell a lot of Bitcoin, but in doing so, we will help change and correct the perception of Bitcoin. This is very important, because a correct perception will accelerate Bitcoin’s spread.
You’re well-known on Twitter for somewhat anti-statist views. Can you see Azteco rolling out without too much interference from governmental bodies?
I am anti-illogic. It is not logical to claim that Bitcoin is money and should be subject to new laws or the existing laws to do with money, but the in game monies used for decades are not. Bitcoin is identical to the FarmBucks in FarmVille, and all the arguments people mount to claim that it is different are all prosaic, in the form of run on sentences, and avoid any mention of the actual truth, which is Bitcoin is a database containing text.
You can’t claim to be running a free country where you have guaranteed rights, but then say that publishing random numbers on databases requires special permission. This is part of what makes Bitcoin so fascinating; it manages to insert its utility into the protected space reserved for speech, where it cannot be touched without completely invalidating the rights guaranteed in all properly run countries.
Now, if you are unfortunate enough to live in an improperly run country where you have no legal protection of your inalienable rights, then the State can literally “ban” anything; there is no pretence of rights or the rule of law. However in countries where there is a pretence of the rule of law, they can’t make an exception for Bitcoin where your rights are suspended. Certainly in the USA (and the process that leads inexorably to this conclusion has already started) the Supreme Court will rule on this matter, and there is no way the Court can find that Bitcoin is money and maintain that the Constitution is in force as intended; the two are mutually exclusive.
Early in Bitcoin’s history, a small group of misguided people insisted that Bitcoin needed “legitimacy” (one of several things they claimed it needed; adoption, legitimacy, liquidity and other things). In order to confer this illusory “legitimacy” to Bitcoin, some very foolish people in the USA mistakenly believed that registering with FinCEN would confer legitimacy to their start-up, which no longer exists, despite having 11,000 outlets (another example of why outlet counts are meaningless).
I argued then that this was a huge mistake, and that Bitcoin was not money at all, and that they should concentrate on offering a good service, rather than trying to signal to people that they were virtuous. Had these naïve people acted properly, Bitcoin (in New York) would not have suffered the BitLicense or the catastrophic misdirection of perception that has caused many people problems. We now know that this position is 100% correct; look at how the Token industry has gone out of its way to characterise what it sells as nothing to do with money or securities. They are very careful not to conflate what they do with financial services, and not a single Token has registered with the SEC. They now understand that registration does not confer legitimacy, and is the kiss of death.
It is the experience of BitLicense that educated everyone not to run to the State for legitimacy, but instead provide a service people want. This is not to say that services (especially Etherium Tokens) will all succeed  —  what is important is the principle. The SEC will never guarantee or reimburse any token holder if the project fails to deliver, and so their involvement is literally worthless. They don’t have the technical expertise to validate any software project and so they can’t even verify claims that are directly provable in the source code (where it even exists). The state slows down the rate of iteration; we now know that  The Token Frenzy was just that; a frenzy where most of the offerings were and are junk.
These experiments will not be run again, because the market has been immunized against them. The cost of discovering all of this is far less than it would have been had the SEC slowed down the process of launching and experimenting, and charging millions per token project in registration “TokenLicenses” and other worthless nonsense.
Azteco and other correctly designed businesses on the other hand, are very simple and do only one thing. We don’t promise returns, hold anyone’s Bitcoins, or do anything related to investment or banking. We simply write to the public database in return for a fee. It is exactly the same as mobile phone companies selling access to the GSM phone network, where you can push voice or text data to any other number on the network. The Pay As You Go GSM vouchers you buy from mobile operators are not usable outside of the mobile operators network GSM network; exactly as Azteco vouchers are not usable outside of our service, and Bitcoin is not usable anywhere but inside Bitcoin. Once you start thinking about Bitcoin in the correct way, and with precision, everything becomes clear, and the business models, obvious. Now with Lightning on the way, our model will become even more obvious.
Finally, everyone is going berserk about how much information Facebook and Google stores on it’s users; it is pure Doublethink for anyone to ask (quite wrongly and irrationally) for KYC/AML in Bitcoin, but rail against Facebook and Google for storing personal information. Anyone who is for KYC/AML whilst simultaneously complaining that Facebook and Google “know too much” is very irrational; they are asking for information to be stored and for information to not be stored in services that serve only data.
Think about it. Bitcoin micropayments are now here. People will be paying for every conceivable small purchase from single articles in newspapers to cans of CocaCola to bus tickets. There is no way that the anti Facebook/Google brigade would want that intimate shopping and reading information to be known and stored by anyone, therefore, they should be for Ethical Bitcoin, that prevents exactly that correlation and data mining of individuals through analysis of the block chain and who controls what addresses. The illogic of the hysterical anti-Bitcoin misdefiners, is easy to tear down, and in the long run we will win this argument because they have no rational, logical answers.
What are your favourite projects in Bitcoin?
Samourai Wallet
Bitcoin Core
Lightning (and associated projects)
Eclair
OpenDime
Ledger
Blockstream Satellite
OXT
The Elements Project
BitID ← (super interesting)
and others…
All of these projects (and some I did not mention) are all classifiable as “Ethical Bitcoin”. They all approach Bitcoin correctly, make the correct assumptions, don’t abuse their users and are beneficial. A voluntary association modelled on Underwriter’s Laboratory will be very useful going forward as a standard bearer and resource for people working in Bitcoin or using it, encouraging best practices and other good things that benefit everyone.
As successful companies coalesce on best practices, the market will be seen to be orderly, protective of consumers and non threatening; Bitcoin is not a threat; it is an unprecedented opportunity to help billions of people and solve many problems, simplifying processes, eliminating payer fraud, facilitating the inclusion of billions of people, all of which will have cumulative effects that we can scarcely imagine. Thanks to one publicly shared database that can fit on a desk. Astonishing!

Advocacy group claims WordPress.com has an ISIS problem

Advocacy group claims WordPress.com has an ISIS problem
WordPress.Com, unwittingly, has just grown to be a breeding ground for terrorists.
In step with the Counter Extremism Assignment (CEP), a non-partisan study and advocacy organization, US-based total tech agencies have supplied the infrastructure wished for Middle Japanese extremist companies to thrive. WordPress.Com — a famous running a blog platform — plays host to its truthful percentage of these sites.
In a society that values free speech, this is the unlucky byproduct. Tech organizations global are actually waging internal battles in attempts to determine where free speech crosses the road into something else entirely. And In step with CEP, WordPress.Com is selecting the incorrect aspect. “In our revel in managing tech businesses, when they don’t need to do something, they speak approximately loose speech, and after they do want to do something, they speak approximately terms of provider,” David Ibsen, govt director of the Counter Extremism Challenge, informed The Washington Put up.
WordPress.Com, Ibsen claims, generally facets with the former — even when content material is in blatant violation of its personal terms of the provider.
The content material we’re speaking approximately right here isn’t harmless propaganda. CEP cites examples of beheading films, pics of firing squads with people laying face-down within the dust, and one video of a person shot in the head with the phrases “this is the enemy of Allah” plastered across the screen.
“We’re no longer talking about stuff that’s in a gray region,” stated Ibsen. “All of these forms of violent films have some type of incitement [to violence] or propaganda reason.”
A spokesperson for Automattic
WordPress.Com’s determine organization — said it was investigating these claims, and issued the subsequent declaration:
While our provider is designed to permit users to freely explicit their ideas and opinions, however debatable, protection is vital to us. As such, we don’t permit websites of recognized terrorist companies or real requires violence in opposition to people or agencies on WordPress.Com.
The Counter Extremism Challenge shared extra correspondence from WordPress.Com with a contradictory take. An e-mail from a WordPress.Com worker named “Sal P.” said: “WordPress.Com is deeply committed to loose speech and will now not take content material down simply because we discover it offensive or disagree with the factor of view.” Sal added that it might evaluation instances of individuals or organizations appearing at the government’s Specifically Unique Nationals and Blocked People Listing.
Advocacy for the Deaf and Mute Patients
As you nurses pass on together with your day by day obligations of sporting out physician’s orders and being concerned to your sufferers, have you ever questioned what befell to the antique style way of nurse-patient interaction? How a lot of your patients nowadays have you ever genuinely took the time to speak to and examine first-hand statistics on what unique set of behavior brought them to the health facility today? One? None?
With the nurse-patient ratio existent in many public hospitals these days, it’s far quite impossible to gain this one fundamental precept you learned from Fundamentals of Nursing. Password managers are an essential way to protect yourself from hackers — here's how they work
Password managers are one of the quickest and easiest ways to help defend yourself against hackers.
They store all your passwords — so you only have to remember a single, extra-secure one to protect yourself.
If you ask security experts for what simple advice they’d give to ordinary people worried about being hacked, the same thing comes up again and again: Don't re-use passwords.
This is because huge numbers of people re-use the same passwords across multiple accounts, putting all their data at risk if any one of their accounts is ever breached.
Of course, juggling dozens of passwords for all your different logins is tricky. And that's where a password manager comes in. A password manager is an app that stores the passwords for all of your services — meaning you only have to remember one.
Here's why you should be using one — and how to do it.
Most people are bad at passwords. Real bad.
There are two key problems with people's password habits: They re-use them all the time, and they're terrible at picking them in the first place.
Throughout 2016, we saw dozens of celebrities and high-profile figures —everyone from Drake to Katy Perry — getting their Twitter accounts hacked. Twitter itself wasn't hacked, but these victims had re-used passwords that were also used on sites that were.
There have been numerous high-profile hacks come to light recently. Sites like MySpace, LinkedIn, and Tumblr have been breached, and hundreds of millions of people's login details leaked online. Hackers can then try these logins on other sites — like Twitter, other social media sites, online banking, or anything else.
On a long enough time frame, everyone gets hacked. It's basically impossible to avoid having your details end up in a leaked data dump sooner or later — and you can't do much to stop it happening. But by not re-using passwords across multiple sites, you can limit the damage.
It's not just tech-illiterate people who are getting stung this way. Even Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, has had his Twitter account breached.
Making matters even worse is people's password choices.
Put simply, people are awful at picking passwords. They go for predictable strings of letters, or simple words, or other basic possibilities — making it much easier for attackers to guess or crack them.
According to an analysis of leaked data from security firm Keeper, the world's most common password is the depressingly easy to guess "123456." The second most-used password was "123456789," according to Keeper, followed by the predictable "qwerty." Then came "12345678," and in fifth place was the obvious "111111."
This is where password managers come in.
A password manager replaces all those awful passwords you use with just one you need to remember.
A password manager will solve both these problems. It means you can use a different password on every account, because you only need to remember one. And it'll also generate strong passwords for you, so you don't fall into the traps people often do when they pick their own passwords. (Easily memorable passwords tend not to be particularly strong.)
It stores and encrypts all your login data in its vault — keeping it safe and inaccessible without the correct master password that you set and remember.
There are other benefits to using one too, like remembering all those account logins that you only use very occasionally. If you only order from UberEats every two months, it'd be easy to forget your password (unless you re-used one, tut tut), but a password manager will keep it safe.
Some also come with extra features to differentiate them from their competitors, including file storage and encrypted note-taking.
Here's an example of a password manager — LastPass.
You add it as a extension for your web browser, then it stores all your different logins on its dashboard or encrypted "vault," making them accessible across multiple devices. (So you can use them on your phone, or your work computer, or your personal laptop, without any issues.)
