Not to be annoying but the pirate code was absolutely NOT treated like guidelines and many people were executed for not following it. And the code usually differed from ship to ship so there wasn't really a universal code that all pirates knew (but there were a few rules that were common among most crews). Please someone ask me about pirates please I am absolutely begging please

You must be a pirate for the pirate’s code to apply and you’re not!

History remixed in OFMD
Stede Bonnet, the aristocrat who left his family and fortune behind to become a pirate, really existed. He paid his crew regular wages, unheard of at the time, and was one of the few historical pirates who made people walk the plank.
Tumblr media
Blackbeard and Bonnet struck up an unlikely friendship, and decided to cruise together, with Blackbeard taking command while Bonnet kept to his cabin, recovering from his wounds
Tumblr media
Despite Blackbeard's ferocious reputation, there are no verified accounts of his ever having murdered or harmed those he held captive.
Tumblr media
Israel Hands had nicknames in his written records including Basilica and Hezekiah.
Tumblr media
Israel Hands captained a second ship as part of Blackbeard's fleet.
Tumblr media
Teach's Queen Anne's Revenge was run aground on a sandbar, and Hands' Adventure also became stuck when trying to assist.
Tumblr media
Teach marooned about 25 men on a small sandy island. Bonnet rescued them two days later.
Tumblr media
In June 1718, Bonnet & Teach separately accepted a pardon for their piracy, but by August had returned to piracy.
Tumblr media
Israel Hands was shot in the knee by Ed Teach / Blackbeard. Some accounts say the captain was firing at another sailor and hit Hands by mistake, offering as explanation "if he did not now and then kill one of them, they would forget who he was." Others say Blackbeard was asserting his authority as captain when Hands disagreed with him.
Tumblr media
The historical Israel Hands did not lose his leg, though his injury disabled him permanently. While Hands was recovering from his wound, Ed Teach was killed in battle and Stede Bonnet was captured by British authorities off the coast of North Carolina. They were both executed, although Israel Hands testified against corrupt North Carolina officials, in exchange for a pardon.

TODAY IN HISTORY
Tumblr media
22 November 1963
John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States, was assassinated in Dallas, Texas.
Lee Harvey Oswald, a former Marine, was charged with the murder — shooting from the Texas School Book Depository.
Oswald was then killed two days later by nightclub owner Jack Ruby.
The Warren Commission concluded in 1964 that Oswald acted alone, but this sparked skepticism and numerous alternative theories about the day arose.
The new administration has promised to release the classified files regarding the assassination, so potentially we’ll know the true story very soon.
John Fitzgerald Kennedy
(29 May 1917 – 22 November 1963)
Tumblr media
22 November 1963
C.S. Lewis passed away at the age of 64 from kidney failure.
He was a scholar at Oxford and Cambridge, known for writing the Chronicles of Narnia and other Christian apologetics.
His death happened on the exact same day as John F. Kennedy's assassination, so he did not receive the attention he deserved.
His works were an incredible blend of imagination and theology, and remain influential in literature and religious thought to this day.
Clive Staples Lewis FBA
(29 November 1898 – 22 November 1963)

22 November 1963
It turns out that this was an extremely dark day in history in 1963.
Not only did John F. Kennedy's assassination and C.S. Lewis's passing occur, but Aldous Huxley also died at age 69 in Los Angeles from laryngeal cancer.
He’s best known for his 1932 novel Brave New World, which is a dystopian vision of the future.
Aldous Leonard Huxley
(26 July 1894 – 22 November 1963)
Tumblr media
22 November 1718
The notorious pirate Blackbeard, real name Edward Teach, died in a battle off North Carolina's Ocracoke Island.
He fought Lieutenant Robert Maynard in a sea battle and suffered multiple wounds before being killed and beheaded.
Blackbeard's death was a huge victory against piracy in the Atlantic.
He was the embodiment of the Golden Age of Piracy, and remains one of the most iconic and well-known pirates today.
Edward Teach
(or Thatch; c. 1680 – 22 November 1718)

Time Travel Question 47: Early Modernish and Earlier 2 (Reposted. First Version Had Issues
These Questions are the result of suggestions a the previous iteration.
This category may include suggestions made too late to fall into the correct earlier time grouping. Basically, I'd already moved on to human history, but I'd periodically get a pre-homin suggestion, hence the occasional random item waaay out of it's time period, rather than reopen the category.
In some cases a culture lasted a really long time and I grouped them by whether it was likely the later or earlier grouping made the most sense with the information I had. (Invention ofs tend to fall in an earlier grouping if it's still open. Ones that imply height of or just before something tend to get grouped later, but not always. Sometimes I'll split two different things from the same culture into different polls because they involve separate research goals or the like).
Please add new suggestions below if you have them for future consideration. All cultures and time periods welcome.

It always makes me so sad when I see people complain about the lack of interesting tv shows these days like.... brother there is 4 decades worth of actually incredible and fun tv shows if you only dared open your eyes and look beyond the confinement of netflix...
Tumblr media
I will add I totally understand it's also a Taste™ and Interest™ thing and that it may just boil down to a Special Interest™ thing but... just consider... The world is filled with SO many tv shows and they're all at your finger tips all you gotta do is dare reach out and touch the stars

A drunken English soldier accidentally giving away Francis Drake's planned ambush on the Spanish silver train at Venta Cruces in February 1573. Drake's expedition had trekked through the jungle to attack the train as it left from Panama City, capturing several mules laden with silver before escaping. Art by the great Angus McBride.

It's so funny to me when certain people think they're doing something so revolutionary by having female pirates. Like they invented the concept.
My guy, women were pirates. Zheng Yi Sao was one of the most successful pirates (or the most successful? can't remember) and she was a woman. Anne Bonny, Mary Read, Gráinne Ní Mháille, Sayyida al-Hurra, all women.
Going on and on about the gender of the pirates is annoying. You should actually flesh them out. Your female characters are still people and if all they can do is bring up their gender, it gets old after a while.

RATING PIRATE FLAGS
By your friendly neighborhood pirate enthusiast. Remember the sources for most of these are often shoddy at best, we do with what we have.
1. EDWARD LOW
Tumblr media
Spooky. Red. Makes your intent clear. Fitting for a man reputed for violence, sadism and a penchant for torture so strong he was compared to the Spanish Inquisition. 9/10 very Halloweeny.
2. EDWARD "BLACKBEARD" TEACH
Tumblr media
Dramatic as fuck. Who hurt you, Ed? Also why is the devil so skinny. This design is a good idea but maybe a bit messy. 6/10 solid flag but makes me think of 2000s emo album covers.
3. STEDE BONNET
Tumblr media
Meh. It tries to be symmetrical but fails because the dagger and heart aren't the same size. Trying too hard to be original but with no real creativity. 4/10 you bougie bitch.
4. BARTHOLOMEW ROBERTS
Tumblr media
Very cool design. Always dubious of putting your own image on the flag, but overall the execution is good. You have the captain pointing at the hourglass to signify your time is up with Death by his side. 8/10 supervillain flag.
5. BARTHOLOMEW ROBERTS AGAIN
Tumblr media
NOOO NO NO. This looks goofy as hell, Barty. The letters are supposed to stand for "A Bahamian's head" and "a Martinican's head" but putting letters on a flag is gauche. The flaming sword looks like a cactus. 2/10 You can't just draw yourself standing on the skulls of your enemies holding a flaming sword and expect people to take you seriously Bartholomew
6. SAMUEL BELLAMY
Tumblr media
The classic. Can't go wrong with it. Points deducted bc a bunch of people used it and it's impossible to tell who started it. 5/10, neutral
7. OLIVIER "LA BUSE" LEVASSEUR
Tumblr media
WHAT in the reverse slenderman is this shit? Get that out of my sight you French bastard. 100000/10 it lives in my nightmares.
8. HENRY EVERY
Tumblr media
BLACK. IT'S CALLED THE BLACK FLAG ASSHOLE. Otherwise, it's a solid design, unique and simple. 6/10 unusual but not bad.
9. JEAN THOMAS DULEAIN
Tumblr media
Just no. Too much stuff. Three skulls is nice but then you add all the other things and it becomes a confusing mess. Pick one thing and stick to it. 3/10 what the hell
10. JAQUOTTE DELAHAYE
Tumblr media
We don't even know if she was real but what I do know is that this design fucks. Dancing with Death over a bleeding heart? Showing your prey that they're going to be bested by a lady? I stan. 11/10
