im not an expert but i do have a fair amount of experience sailing so i can say this is kind of correct. it depends on the sail type (square rigged vs triangle rigged) but with triangle sails you aren't bound purely to the direction of the wind. you work your sail so that it fills for whatever direction you're moving in. but even then you cannot sail directly into the wind, so moving against the wind involves a lot of zig-zagging. from what i can tell by images online, square rigged ships ate more limited in their direction (seemingly a 66° no sail zone versus a 45° for triangle rigged) but still can move towards the wind with very broad zig zags.

yall ever see a ship and get so unreasonably mad at it..
