Understanding Needs to Prioritize Goal Setting
It is important to have specific and measurable goals. But how do you set your goals? Our goals should be determined by our needs. Read more about Need analysis in this article.
Tumblr media
Is it important to have specific and measurable goals? If they keep on changing, what is the purpose of having a goal?
The answer to the first one is yes, we need to have goals, that too, written goals (one study shows that written goals are more likely to be achieved). If we do not have any yardstick of measurement, how do we know we are progressing and therefore when we are likely to reach the goal?
But even more basic than that, what should be my goal? How do I determine the right goal?
Our goals should be determined by our needs. So we have to do a needs analysis of what we would like to have and what we would like to avoid.
One way is to think back and remember those incidents that made me happy. Then for each incident, I do a ‘root cause’ on why it made me happy. This will show me my needs. Then I create those goals that satisfy these needs.
Another way is to think of incidents that made me unhappy. A root cause on this – why did that incident make me unhappy – would tell me what I would like to avoid.
Once I have my needs (what I want and what I don’t want) defined, I have to do two things:
determine the relative important of each need
determine the maximum time frame in which this should be satisfied (urgency)
Now I can find out what I have to do and when, and this determines my goals. We have to remember that to achieve something, we may have to sacrifice something else, and the important/urgent matrix above will help us realize our priority.
Another aspect of needs analysis is to determine whether these are your goals or the goals of your influencers or loved ones. Sometimes, we want to do something but our parents want us to do something else. The question is whether I sacrifice my happiness for my parents’ happiness?
For example, I remember the time I got admission in one of the leading B-schools of India.
Why did it make me happy? Because I made my parents proud or because my effort was acknowledged in front of a crowd.
Why does that make me happy? Because I need the approval of people
Why do I need approval? Maybe I have self-esteem issues and I need to compare with others to define me
So if I am seeking a goal in terms of what type of job I should look for, I should look for a job that gives me a lot of approval, or allows me to do peer comparison and which does not lower my self-esteem. Sales would be a bit of an issue as a job, because it has a lot of rejection built in. However, advisory services based on my competency would be good, because a client would be grateful for my services.
I can now set up a time frame for creating a competency that can be appreciated by clients and to find a job that allows me to use this competency.
Since these needs keep changing, our goals will keep changing.
Suppose there are two conflicting goals?
If I have done my needs analysis in terms of all the types of needs I have and the priority of each need, and have determined who in my life is important and considered their needs, then each goal can be analyzed based on how well it satisfies these criteria.

✧ how i stay productive during summer break (while still having fun!) ✧
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
hey lovelies! ✨
summer break is finally here and honestly? it's my favorite time to both relax and get things done. i know that sounds contradictory but trust me, finding that sweet balance between productivity and fun is totally possible! after years of either doing absolutely nothing or burning myself out, i've finally found my perfect summer rhythm.
first things first: the morning routine ✨
i've learned that my day flows so much better when i start it intentionally. i wake up around 8 or 9 (not too early because we deserve some extra sleep!), make my bed immediately (small win!), and spend 15 minutes journaling before checking my phone. this tiny habit has literally changed everything for me.
my summer morning essentials:
iced coffee with oat milk and a tiny bit of vanilla
a cute journal that makes me excited to write in it
10 minutes of stretching by my window
a super quick skincare routine (sunscreen is non-negotiable!)
creating a flexible structure 🤍
the secret to summer productivity is having just enough structure without feeling trapped. i divide my days into three parts:
morning: productive focus time (2-3 hours max) afternoon: flexible time for errands, friends, or projects evening: pure relaxation and fun
this way, i never feel like i'm missing out or falling behind. the key is being realistic about what you can actually accomplish in a day. i used to make these impossible to-do lists and then feel awful when i couldn't finish them.
my productivity non-negotiables:
i always make sure to do at least one productive thing each day, even if it's small. some of my favorites:
reading 20 pages of a book
organizing one small area of my room
working on a creative project for 30 minutes
learning something new for my blog
planning content or taking photos
balancing productivity with summer fun ✨
here's my little secret: schedule your fun just like you schedule your work! this sounds silly but it actually helps me look forward to both. some of my favorite summer activities that feel refreshing but don't derail my productivity:
morning walks with an audiobook
afternoon picnics where i can also read or brainstorm
coffee shop work dates with friends
sunset swims after a productive day
weekend day trips that recharge my creativity
my favorite productivity tools:
a paper planner (something about writing things down just works better for me)
the forest app to stay off my phone when focusing
aesthetic notion templates for organizing my projects
time blocking in my calendar with cute colors
lo-fi summer playlists that help me concentrate
remembering the why 🤍
summer isn't just about getting things done or having the perfect instagram moments. it's about growing, reflecting, and creating memories that will make you smile in december when it's freezing outside. productivity should support your joy, not replace it!
i've found that my happiest summer days are when i accomplish something meaningful in the morning and then have the freedom to be spontaneous in the afternoon and evening. balance isn't perfect every day, and that's okay too.
what are your favorite ways to stay productive during summer break? i'd love to hear your tips too!
xoxo, mindy 🤍

Oh dear, I've just looked at the photos for an upcoming estate sale and there are several big bins of fabric with a "fill a bag for $5" sign. And a lot of other fabric besides. Wish me fortitude.

like i know of course the games industry is fucked and EA will continue to make money with impunity but i just. continue to wonder how the fuck they operate as a business if they keep getting caught setting people up to fail on purpose. from a logistical standpoint, do you not want to make money on every product you develop so it’s not a “waste of resources”? do you not understand market research and what appeals to consumers?
like we keep hearing about how they wanted to turn the franchise into something else and the fact that it “”failed to meet expectations”” because they couldn’t adequately course-correct, but i am so baffled how those expectations got set in the first place. how are you a video game company who doesn’t understand the concept of a target audience. why do you keep trying to broaden your appeal when time and again it’s proven that just alienates the people you already had. someone who plays overwatch is never going to come to dragon age for the same thing. the devs who work on it are never going to be able to make something comparable because it’s not the kind of thing they’re used to doing. like who let them think this was a reasonable thing to expect would just. happen
