I don’t have much reach on Tumblr so reblogs are hugely appreciated.
The Glad Day Bookshop in Toronto, Canada is in danger of eviction. Besides being the oldest (and non-profit!) queer bookshop in the world, they are also a coffee shop and events venue providing a much needed place for queers of every flavor to feel safe and supported. If you have the means to help, please do! If not, reblogs and sharing on other platforms are very very appreciated. Queer spaces worldwide are getting fewer. We have to try to save the ones we have.

The Immediate Crisis -
Glad Day has reached a crisis point. Since the ‘end’ of the pandemic (and the end of COVID-19 subsidies) we have been struggling. We have been going into debt almost every month for the last 2 years. We have often been short on rent. Our landlord has been patient but if we are unable to provide him with a lump sum payment of $100,000 in July, we will be evicted. BUT if we can pay him $100,000, he has agreed to a small reduction in our rent for 1 year, which gives us time to consult with our communities, explore our options, and create the next version of Glad Day.
The Strategy -
We are hoping to raise $300,000 to give us at least one more stable year at our current location and provide the capacity needed to dream of and act on whatever Glad Day becomes next.
This fundraiser will help us prevent a crisis, stabilize us for a year and be a catalyst for rebirth.
We know that with intense inflation, funds are tight for many people and you may already be donating to other organizations. Any support you can provide, even if it is sharing this campaign with one other person, is deeply appreciated.

Hey @chucktingleofficial I’m sick with corona virus right now so my mind is a mess but Glad Day Toronto, aka the world’s oldest LGBTQ2SiA+ bookstore, got a very raw deal from their landlord and are facing the possibility of shutting down forever. They are the truest buckaroos and always have been (they host so many events including queer singles trivia nights for neurodivergent bucks) and the whole Toronto community would appreciate a signal boost from the world’s greatest author to ever trot on this planet.

Hope you and all your buckaroos are well!

Picked this one up just for the cover #williamblake #gladday which has a fortuitously placed flash reflection ha. #strawbs #gravenewday. Of course I picked it up from the glorious Michelle @savvy_vinyl_records, who not only named the #artist but the #watercolor as well right off the top of her head, because with her BFA she also got a degree in art history :). Really really good #70s #buddhist infused #hippie #folk #acousticguitar with some interesting #electricguitar treatments which gives it a #ledzeppelin feel when they were at their softer side, sometimes leaning #jethrotull - but I don’t want to make them sound derivative. They aren’t. #folkrock #rock #rocknroll #rockandroll #rockmusic #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylcommunity #vinylrecords #vinylcollector #vinyljunkie #vinyljunkies #rockandromanticism #prog #progressive #progressiverock (at Vinyl Request Records) https://www.instagram.com/p/CKwV3odMfUE/?igshid=1ge1pc8l5tj0u

History
Glad Day Bookshop was created in 1970. This makes it not only the world's oldest surviving LGBTQ bookstore but also Toronto's oldest surviving bookstore. We believe we have the largest collection of LGBTQ titles in the world. Story, representation and freedom of speech are critical elements of LGBTT2SQQIA culture and identity – our bookstore is an important place that supports, nurtures and inspires culture. From Wikipedia:
" Opened in 1970 by Jearld Moldenhauer, it was the city's and Canada's first bookstore targeted to the gay community. The bookstore originally operated out of Moldenhauer's apartment in The Annex, which also served as the original offices of The Body Politic.[1]Moldenhauer later moved to a house in Kensington Market, where the bookstore and magazine operated out of a shed in his backyard.[1] The store moved to its current location in 1981.
In 1979, Moldenhauer opened a second location in Boston. A fire destroyed the Boston building in 1982, but the store reopened in a different location a few weeks later.[2]
Norman Laurila, an employee of Glad Day in the 1970s, moved with his partner Richard Labonté and friend George Leigh in 1979 to Los Angeles, where the trio established an influential LGBT bookstore of their own, A Different Light.
Moldenhauer sold the Toronto location to John Scythes in 1991, but retained ownership of the Boston store and continued to be involved in the Toronto store's operations.[2]After the Boston store's landlord decided to convert the building into condominiums, Moldenhauer closed the store in 2000 when he and manager John Mitzel faced difficulty finding a suitable new location.[3]
The Toronto location remains open, and is currently managed by Scott Dagostino. Since the closure of New York City's Oscar Wilde Bookshop in early 2009, Glad Day is now the oldest surviving LGBT bookstore in North America.[1] In late 2011, Scythes announced that he was putting the store up for sale due to declining revenues;[4] the store was ultimately purchased by a collective of 22 community members, spearheaded by teacher Michael Erickson[5] and also including former Xtra! managing editor Marcus McCann, former Pride Toronto executive director Fatima Amarshi, community activists Doug Kerr and Mike Went, lawyer El-Farouk Khaki[6] and performer Troy Jackson. Under its current ownership, the store has attempted to revitalize its role as a cultural hub, adding an event space to host author readings, performances and community group meetings, and conducting a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo in 2013 to fund and launch an online bookstore for LGBT titles.[7]

There are a lot of wonderful trans books out there. I Am J by Cris Beam is my favorite YA book featuring a trans man protagonist and Holding Still For As Long As Possible by Zoe Whittall is my favorite “adult” book. I’ve also heard good things about Refuse by Elliot DeLine and Beautiful Music For Ugly Children by Kirsten Cronn-Mills. If you’d prefer non-fiction, check out Transgender Warriors, Gender Outlaws: The Next Generation, Manning Up: Transsexual Men On Finding Brotherhood, Family and Themselves, or Transgender History.
