It took a while but I finally finished my halloween picture! It's Gin and Bourbon for Detective Conan as Eddie and Columbia from Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Random rough if plot: Matsuda Jinpei was actually a organization member and he was still alive. (No details of how this plot works)

In my head, he was a member after graduating Police Academy. Skipping the details, his existence in the organization is a top secret.

Gin did not like him because of … seniority? Like, I am more skilled and in this organization longer than this brat, but how can people act like he is more important?? Super sure some of the other members who knew his existence also think like this.

What I want to say, I want a antagonist Matsuda Jinpei who can make a super mean expression and see the face of betrayed Furuya Rei when he actually met him as Bourbon.

But, seriously, it is really hard to fill up the details to make this plot works.

I guess I just want an antagonist Jinpei X Rei.

Ai Haibara is the most interesting character in Detective Conan.

Ever since she appeared the plot moved forward and it became way more intriguing.

It would have been amazing if her past in the organisation and all the trauma it caused were explored, but I guess we'll never have a proper explanation outside of fandom's theories.

Basically we know that she's traumatised and terrified by Gin, but we never discover what happened between them. She's terrified by him just as much as he's OBSESSED with her, but why? We still don't know for certain.

Yes, she's scared of every member of the organisation BUT it's undeniable that she's scared IN PARTICULAR by Gin. She knows everything about him (but little to nothing about any other member of the BO) and he knows EVERYTHING about her, he even recognises her by a single auburn hair- weird??? He also imagined her n4ked TWICE while smiling in a very creepy way- EVEN MORE WEIRD???

In an official drawing/scheme we see the relationships between some members of the BO and when it comes to Gin and Sherry it says “love affair?”, while when it comes to Sherry and Vermouth it says “love rivals?”- LIKE??? At this point it's clear that something very traumatic that goes beyond the simple fear of being killed has happened.

It would be great (and very dark) to explore the trauma that Ai bears for being in a forced toxic relationship with Gin, a relationship that not only has a big age gap but also a disparity of power (plus she was probably manipulated in many ways inside the BO, both by Gin and by any other member who had more power and influence)

The introduction of Akai/Subaru could have helped cause he was in the organisation just like her and he was her sister's boyfriend, he had to know something about her (and her implications with Gin), right? Ai-Akai is a duo that together could be so powerful, they know many and different things about the BO, they would be the key to destroy them.

It would have been awesome if Aoyama had explored all of this in the manga, but I guess he forgot that Gin had this weird obsession for Sherry

ALSO she has suicidal thoughts everytime she thinks that the BO has found her and she's willing to sacrifice her life for her friends. This was just shown but never explored and it pisses me off because?!?!?

We could have had a great development of her character where she learns that her life matters, but instead we got nothing because Aoyama decided that Ai wasn't important anymore and that the BO and Gin suddenly forgot about her

HELLO i'm nothing if not entirely predictable lmao

re: art -- i went for a mostly lineless thing here, in an attempt to distinguish him from the other character portraits. it was also SUPER satisfying to break the borders around him lmao

fun fact, i called the layers with the colourful 'shapes' the "disco" layer!! because those more expressionist bits were directly inspired by disco elysium's portrait art direction :3

what i struggled with far more was finding an appropriate song for him! because it had to be Ukrainian (hes from UkrSSR in my story) but it ALSO had to fit his actual vibe/personality as it appears in my story. so, i had to once again commit to the bit entirely, and immerse myself in a music culture that was (mostly) new to me. (not as if i dont love doing that, anyway. showing my entire music nerd ass here)

the translation also fought me tooth and nail. I ended up asking my Bosnian friend for advice, and together we settled on what's above (a little more poetic, a little less literal).

here's the original though, if anyone with knowledge wants to weigh in...

the venu vrizhu, skazhimo expression works so well in the original but there's nothing that covers it as succintly in english. so i decided for an interpretation that connects a little more widely to the theme/lyrics of the song.

GinxSherry week 2024 - forest

keep forgetting to buy gin so I have sparkling elderflower lemonade from the aforementioned trader joe's and my options for mixers are bourbon (perhaps?), wray and nephew (do not want to turn up that much tonight), two different spirits that taste like anise because there is a great darkness within me (arak & absinthe), the ingredients for a Last Word minus the gin (chartreuse, maraschino), various bitters, and St. Germain (I put elderflower in your elderflower so you can elderflower while you elderflower)

she's singing in another room and my dog is asleep at my feet. my grandma asked me why i haven't found a man yet and i laughed. oh, you know. i like my house clean.

my girlfriend is also my man is also "my partner" if i'm in a professional setting. yesterday we went to a ren faire and a man mimed at me - you're together? and at my delighted nod, his baffled, you're gay? made me laugh. a woman with rainbow hair said i love the two of you together. you're both so beautiful it's absurd.

my dad introduced my partner as my "..... friend. or whatever" the other day. he knows we're dating. in the same way, i was never able to get my sister's husband to stop saying that's gay like it's 2008. he still uses the word fa***t, and my sister's defense of him has always been well, he's just kidding.

my lover and i dance to old music in a tiny kitchen. we judge new music together and take food critique very seriously. we watch love is blind before we fall asleep and agree that if they had a queer season, it would be bloody but also make for excellent tv. of fucking course queer people would know someone for only 2 weeks and agree to get married. what are you saying.

at a bar with friends, a man puts his hand on my wrist. got a boyfriend? and yes, i do have a boyfriend, she's amazing. i am texting her while i wander around a gas station named after geese. i am visiting a swing state for a wedding. in the candy aisle i overhear: she's actually like a lesbian it's disgusting. two teenage girls with packaged sandwiches in their hands, giggling. no literally, like. i'm not, like. okay with her being there while we're all, like, naked and changing.

my girlfriend and i tailgate, drink gin and cider out of cups. from the frat group beside us, a man corrects himself with one of his friends: bro, i mean, nonbinary entity, and it makes everyone around him laugh, myself included. he razzes his friend the same way i would have killed for at 19 years old - like nothing happened, he continues: you apply sunscreen like an alien. he does a little sassy (and fairly accurate) dance interpretation of the motion. his friend is laughing so hard they're crying.

i am lucky, i live in a safe neighborhood in a safe state. my masc passenger princess comes up from DC. i drive her for an hour to where all the leaves are a violent arrangement of color. we walk along the trails, letting autumn into our blood. in this part of the state, there's a lot of pickup trucks and trump signs. when we chastely kiss before getting into the car, i accidentally make eye contact with a woman holding her child's wrist. she looks disgusted. she looks fucking pissed.

two hours later my girl and i are eating dinner on a patio, soaking in the last warmth of new england sun before the chill of winter sets in. we are giggling and trying to talk through plastic vampire teeth. at another table, i see a young woman sit up straighter. i watch her watch us. she blushes and takes her partner's hand from across the table. shy, like the taste of evening has just become something deeper.

it's worth it for this moment, i think. my lover is still humming the same song she's been singing for four days straight and i don't want to kill her for it. her guitar is beside my bed. her toothbrush is in my bathroom. in a few moments i will make us lunch. we are lucky enough to have found each other. it is lucky enough to be in love.

The Cold Below

Today's subject is a pretty far-reaching one, and that in pretty much every respect.

The chorus of Monster's (2012) burlesque Paul & Gene duet Take Me Down Below had somehow managed to disguise its reference as a somewhat late Kiss 80s song from my pointy ears in my own subconscious since its release. That's something I'd like to salute.

I do have my Kiss Sensor, which is a kind of app installed inside me that lights up green or red light bulbs depending on how close or far away I am from the right answer, and it basically works quite well, but unfortunately with a bit of a delay every now and then. If you know what I mean.

I'm also not afraid to mention how I found myself poking around in this very area, such as Hot in the Shade (1989) (1) at random and without any real success, because of course that would have been too easy. And it was all dark there too, by which I mean the light bulbs of course. A whole 15 light bulbs, none of which ever even flickered faintly.

So, the secondary question that could arise from such a setback would then be whether this rather vague 80s impression could have resulted from the fact that the track in question could also be a much older one, maybe even from the 70's; which might simply still have been played live regularly in the 80s. And there wouldn't be too many of those. Hmm!

Once you decide to move within this somewhat narrower scope, you can't help but notice this one little light bulb blinking eagerly at you from far away, directly from 1974. A tiny bit behind Hotter Than Hell, and exactly where the debut album is located. And what number is written underneath? A large and legible 4, Cold Gin. And what immediately catches your ear? The vocal refrain. Bull's-eye!

And Take Me Down Below? Sounds something like a third-generation rip-off of Cold Gin, or what would end up coming out after a ten-person session of Chinese Whispers, and reminds me a bit of Sonic Boom's (2009) Yes, I Know as it relates to a very specific Gene song from Rock and Roll Over (1976) (2). Structurally identical, just a little too different in just the right places to pass as unremarkable.

If you were to add Take Me Down Below's opening riff to the equation, you could, if you insisted, also deduce a relationship to those of Cold Gin, at least on a structural level, even if the content is more reminiscent of AC/DC (3).

But maybe I should just check out Hot in the Shade for a Cold Gin reference I haven't discovered yet, that would put the cherry on top.

And explain a lot.

Side Note:

(1) Because that album itself is one big grab bag and for that reason alone is always worth a rummage.

(2) It's lying somewhere in my drawer, ready and waiting to be dug out at some point.
