sklonda really pulled the "you always do" line on riz, huh. of course he always gets it done when work is an act of love, when the one thing you can have bigger than everybody is will and grit. is there any option for him than to always succeed at whatever it is he's doing, no matter what?

My mom: The federal government, usually under democratic leadership, did serious and personal harm to my family by deporting them under false charges for being Cuban.
Me: Wow, that's awful. I think its important to have legal protections for immigrants against stuff like that so no one has to suffer what you did.
My mom: : ((((( Why don't you support Trump?? The democrats are soooo bad, they've brainwashed your generation into thinking putting immigrants in cages at the border is a "bad" thing!
Me: 😬

Hi, xenophobe
Take your drama-thirsty, imperialist-musical-loving ass back to TikTok, there's literally no reason for us to be speaking.
1. I am a blog with 93 followers, literally nothing I say matters in general.
2. You don't know me or follow me. Nothing I say or think matters to you.
3. From the DM you sent me, that I replied to when you sent it to me, you're reacting to something a Chinese person said to me, because they assumed I was white while discussing China and Taiwan.
4. I am literally a 2nd generation Taiwanese immigrant. This is not hard information to know about me. It's all over my blog. My title mentions that I'm mixed race.
If you actually cared about xenophobia you wouldn't be harassing a random guy from an immigrant family who was literally talking about the country his family immigrated from and got called xenophobic for putting something about Taiwan on a post about current events in China. This is clearly an issue that you know nothing about and frankly I'm offended you're pretending to care about it.

ACADEMY REVEALS 2024 NICHOLL SCREENWRITING FELLOWS
Posted: Monday, September 30, 2024
LOS ANGELES, CA – Four individuals and one writing team have been selected as recipients of the 2024 Academy Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting. Each individual and writing team will receive a $35,000 prize and mentorship from an Academy member throughout their fellowship year. They also will participate in a week of virtual seminars, a virtual meet and greet with the Nicholl Fellowships committee, and in-person networking events, including a celebration in Beverly Hills on October 29. The Nicholl Fellowships were established in 1985 through the support of Gee Nicholl in memory of her husband, Don Nicholl.
The 2024 Nicholl Fellows are (listed alphabetically by author):
Alysha Chan and David Zarif (Los Angeles, CA), “Miss Chinatown”
Jackie Yee follows in her mother’s footsteps on her quest to win the Los Angeles Miss Chinatown pageant.
Colton Childs (Waco, TX), “Fake-A-Wish”
Despite their forty-year age gap, and the cancer treatment confining them to their small Texas town, two gay men embark on a road trip to San Francisco to grant themselves the Make-A-Wish they’re too old to receive.
Charmaine Colina (Los Angeles, CA), “Gunslinger Bride”
With a bounty on her head, a young Chinese-American gunslinger poses as a mail order bride to hide from the law and seek revenge for her murdered family.
Ward Kamel (Brooklyn, NY), “If I Die in America”
After the sudden death of his immigrant husband, an American man’s tenuous relationship with his Muslim in-laws reaches a breaking point as he tries to fit into the funeral they’ve arranged in the Middle East. Adapted from the SXSW® Grand Jury-nominated short film of the same name.
H (West Chester, PA), “The Superb Lyrebird & Other Creatures”
A neurodivergent teen who envisions people as animated creatures, battles an entitled rival for a life-changing art scholarship, while her sister unwisely crosses the line to help.
A total of 5,500 scripts, from 80 countries, were submitted for the 2024 competition.
The 2024 finalists are (listed alphabetically by author):
Kelly Beck-Byrnes, “Where the Boxelders Grow”
Tate Hamilton, “Delivery Girl”
Jamie Murphy, “Lights over Idaho”
Adele Smaill, “No Ghosts Tonight”
Justine Suh, “Deep”
The five fellowships are awarded with the understanding that recipients will complete feature-length screenplays during their fellowship year. The Academy acquires no rights to the works of Nicholl fellows and does not involve itself commercially in any way with their completed scripts.
The Academy Nicholl Fellowships Committee is chaired by Julie Lynn (Producers Branch). The members of the committee are Aldis Hodge and Caitríona Balfe (Actors Branch); Julien Thuan (Artist Representatives); Susan Shopmaker and Academy governor Kim Taylor-Coleman (Casting Directors Branch); Andrzej Bartkowiak (Cinematographers Branch); Allison Anders (Directors Branch); Bruce Hendricks and Marcus Hu (Executives Branch); Blaise Noto (Marketing and Public Relations Branch); Jason Michael Berman, Susan Cartsonis, Julia Chasman and Linda Reisman (Producers Branch); Sue Chan (Production Design Branch); Bobbi Banks (Sound Branch); and Destin Daniel Cretton, Susannah Grant, Ehren Kruger, Adele Lim, Justin Marks, Zak Penn and Katie Silberman (Writers Branch).
The global competition, which aims to identify and encourage talented new screenwriters, has awarded 186 fellowships since 1986. In 2024, several past Nicholl fellows added to their feature film and television credits:
Aaron Chung is a staff writer on Apple+’s “WondLa.”
Elizabeth Chomko directed the docuseries “Martin Scorsese Presents: The Saints.”
Eric Nazarian wrote and directed “Die like a Man.”
“Holy Irresistible” is from Andrew Shearer and Nicholas Sherman’s 2007 Nicholl-winning script.
“Interstate” is from Anthony Jaswinski’s 1997 Nicholl-winning script.
Jason Micallef is an executive producer and writer on Disney+’s “The Acolyte.”
R.J. Daniel Hanna wrote and directed two features: “Succubus” and “Hard Miles,” which he co-wrote.

The level of cognitive dissonance. The level of bubble you have to be in to look me in the face and tell me that it actually matters to vote for harris over trump at this point is horrifying. The fact there are people spending more time attacking anyone who has a working brain cell that can go "gee sure seems the national dems are just republicans this election and doing nothing at best" then going after harris and the people causing trump to even come this close to winning....I mean at this point I don't know who is going to win and I just don't fucking care. I'm going to be bracing for this biggest shit show regardless. Cause If you are marginalized, and you haven't formed connections yet, shit is going to get really bad really fast. harris is screaming as loud as she can in your fucking face unmask with covid that she fucking hates you and doesn't give a flying fuck about anyone then courting the right to one the, if not the most embarrassing display by the dems yet. if it quacks like a duck, and looks like a duck, it's probably a duck. This duck has said "fuck immigrants, fuck Palestinians, and fuck the environment" out right. Might be time to start believing her. Hell i'm begging you, if you are not privileged and are actually marginalized like some of us, I beg you to start forming some real tangible IRL community connections.

omg your point about Elemental. freaking PREACH. So many people dismissed it as "boring romance" (I mean the trailers did fail to include a lot of the immigrant-coded aspects but that's another thing) and then those same people turn around and cry about how they were "robbed" of a romance that doesn't even exist.
Also I'm sorry to those folks but if you can't enjoy a movie because you think "we were ROBBED of a ROMANCE!!!!!" that's a *you* problem.
I don't really have anything else to say because you hit the nail on the head. Elemental markets a romance and people turn up their noses, but the instant they find out there was three (3) concept arts of Star as a generic twink boy they scream about how great romances are and how Disney "hates romance!!!!!" suddenly. And then continuously ignore how Starboy is a young Sabino.
They also conveniently ignore Strange World. Hmm. Gee. Wonder why.

reddit front page is a good way to get an idea of the lib mindset because they dominate the daily topics and the framework / conception / worldview of the content featured every day. Whether it is vote harder, everything is fine in ukraine, greed is more detrimental to society than capitalism or global warming, the acceptable overton window is actually quite narrow. It is truly bizare seeing a posts with titles like "Many Gen Z will not be Voting this election, why not?" and all the responses are basically the same: no vote/third party = trump vote, this is the most important election of your life etc., hope they enjoy the camps!.... are these people interested in hearing out the non-voters or are they just enjoying the big masturbatory circle jerk where they make fun of non-voters? They never ask themselves, gee, could there be a reason people choose not to vote that doesn't imply they are mentally handicap or repulican leaning? I think I answered my own question here but the solution is so fucking simple it breaks my brain trying to comprehend the mental gymnastics they get into desparately avoiding the elephant in the room. THE POLICIES DO NOT BENEFIT US. NOBODY IS ADDRESSING POVERTY/HOMELESSNESS/ADDICTION. YOU TAKE ALL NON WHITE VOTES FOR GRANTED. YOU ARE NOT TAKING CLIMATE CHANGE SERIOUSLY. YOU'RE STILL GIVING WEAPONS TO ISRAEL. WHY ARE YOU TRYING TO OUT-RIGHTWING REPUBLICANS ON IMMIGRATION? WHY HAVEN'T YOU ADDRESSED STUDENT LOANS? WHERE IS YOUR POLICY ON STATE-EXECUTIONS? YOU SPEND THE ENTIRE ELECTION CAMPAING COURTING NEOCON WAR CRIMINALS TO THE DETRIMENT OF THE NON VOTER BLOC WHO DOES NOT HAVE A SEAT AT THE TABLE.

Two gangs, both alike in dignity…
Tumblr media
It is particularly heartbreaking throughout the movie to notice the similarities between the gangs and how close they come to an understanding at multiple points. Now, of course it is the point for them to not be able to see this or else we wouldn’t have a plot but one can still mourn. Particularly I want to talk about the Jets as their primary drivers are a bit subtler/lost to time whereas the Sharks are much more direct. (Both in story and interpretation).
The advantage they have on the Shark’s is barely existent, they’re both on the same low rung on that latter just the Jets are the top of that rung.
I haven’t seen it mentioned how the Jets are first generation kids, they’re also all from immigrant families. Back in the day, and still in some places up north “they’re still racist to other kinds of white people”, hell Bernardo calls Tony a Polack multiple times. Now this is not anywhere close to the same level of racial/ethnic discrimination faced by the Sharks but it is still very existent. The lieutenant tries to form some sort of “racial solidarity” with the Jets multiple times, going far softer on them and trying to be chummy - when it doesn’t work and he sees the gang doesn’t see their issues as racial he makes his true opinion clear with the “you and the immigrant scum you come from” before getting brutally personal about their homelife.
Tumblr media
And while being a very catchy song they aren’t entirely joking in Gee, Officer Krupke. It’s cope. They’re victims of a broken system pushed towards gang life, they can joke and say they’re fine and it’s chosen till they’re red in the face but there’s the underlying economic and social factor there. Additionally- they joke because one would rather be hated than pitied. And while being “born here” gives them a marginal leg up… the American working/lower class doesn’t exactly have a great time.
It’s also easy to convince those with very little of a false enemy. Like the sharks coming into the country and “stealing” the little you have away from you… not the actual cause. They end up fighting over the same measly scrap of land instead of the system that placed them both there. (Their fighting is not inherently racially motivated. It’s more over territory as they had before mingled with some less than savory attitudes of the period and what I mentioned above. This is not negating racism just stating it’s not the primary cause.)
As I’m losing my ability to write out this thought I’d like to leave off with another analogy. The Jets are treated like gravel, an inconvenience and a bother but aren’t met with the same destain as dirt. Gravel and dirt are trampled by the same shoes but gravel would rather keep the little bit better treatment than recognize how a like they are with dirt. And dirt sees only how gravel is treated slightly better, not how they are both being stepped on.
I don’t know I just find the nuance fascinating and the level of similarities goes unappreciated.

basic info: hello hello! i’m gaea (gee-ya, hard g), she/her. i’m 19 years old, half greek and kenyan. greek is my mother tongue so my english may be a bit off at times!
when i’m not writing i’m studying early childhood education to be a kindergarten teacher! i love all things pink, butterflies, and i’m a trained singer. in my spare time i also enjoy gaming- stardew valley and the sims 4 are my current favorites!!
right now i am only writing my own ocs, which i will be sharing on this account, mostly for motivation but also to find fellow writers as well!
my main oc, magdalena, lives in our fictional city of venturis, new york with her cat eloise and her husband koa. she owns a flower shop, the garden of life, and possesses the power to control the elements. she is herself is half greek and swahili, and immigrated to venturis at eighteen. she’s due a proper introduction, of course, but i feel its important to let you know who she is in a nutshell, since she is who i write the most!
i look forward to sharing my work, and i hope you choose to stick around! <3

I think I've said this before, but it bears repeating: I have not watched the 2021 West Side Story, but I have seen its versions of "America" and "Gee, Officer Krupke," and both of them make me so fucking mad.
The point of "America" happening up on the roof of the tenement is because it's one of the very few places where the Sharks and their girlfriends can just be themselves without being constantly judged for being immigrants. They have a spot high above the street where they're judged to imagine their best lives. Setting it in the street like they're welcomed to be there misses the fucking point of the song.
The point of "Gee, Officer Krupke" happening in the streets is because that's the one place the Jets feel most powerful and therefore able to mock the authority around them. Setting it in the police station because they've gotten caught misses the fucking point of the song.
They're both songs about strength and independence and community set--in the original--in places where each group feels most powerful. The location change takes away part of fucking point of the songs and the film itslef.

European immigrants welcomed in Israel to populate and push out , displace Palestinians from Palestine since 1948- even when they are not religious, as evidenced by this video- they are white though, which is what Israel wants. They want numbers. Literally the same as 'ten pound pom' to " populate" Australia (that's how the Bee Gees came here as children )

Dhaaruni is that person who posted an article where she had to clarify that she’s not a crypto right-winger and she was like “people just think I’m a right-winger because I don’t want to reduce the Defense budget, I’m pro-Israel, I don’t support medicare for all, I’m anti-immigration, I’m pro police/prison, and I’m not a socialist”. Gee sure is weird that people are making the assumption that you’re a right-winger, can’t see why they’d do that, lmao. She also embraced Mitt Romney solely because he dislike Trump, despite Romney still being a pro-life Christian fascist who took MILLIONS from the NRA to allow the slaughter of our children.
