I will forever appreciate Arcane’s attention to detail when it comes to making asymmetry of the human face obvious—but also beautiful and unique. They aren’t afraid to make the characters have ugly and human reactions, it makes the entire show more relatable to watch. For e.x. when Mel is speaking to Jayce & Viktor regarding the use of Hextech for weapons, Viktor makes angry almost animalistic expressions, further amplifying his state of distress. In animation, it is so important to convey these almost embarrassing scenes to the audience because it enhances how a person may sympathize with a character. Everyone has a sense of self, nobody looks the same, they all have their own archetypes and experiences that shape their story and it’s so easy to pinpoint them. The character design along with the utilization of personalities and political, cultural, and geographical differences makes this show stand out SO much compared to others. Their portrayal of mental struggles along with physical disabilities was never created as an attempt to demote the characters, if anything it further improves them, making them feel like someone you may know. There has never been a time where I’ve ever related to a character’s mental struggles more than I have with Viktor and it’s truly a refreshing feeling to feel represented in media. Especially one with such a large and growing following. This show is truly a masterpiece and I’m going to miss it so much :(
