I have seen Gavroche the Musical and maybe that's why I can't sleep
Spoilers under the cut though this is NOT a coherent review post , it's gonna be long and confusing like the musical itself HEYOOOOO and somehow have spoilers so. here we go
this show...is definitely a show
seriously all the songs are very "Musical! The Musical!!" you know?
The Thenardiers are running a welfare scheme
ignoring that this is genuinely straight up right wing propaganda about how welfare works, yeah ok they would run any grift but
their whole "fraudulent scheme" consists of trying to convince ...canon era social workers? Aid for Dependent Children? IDEK-- that they are Super Poor and have children to feed and they need help
And ?!? they ARE super poor! They DO have children to feed! Their welfare scheme is just applying for welfare that they definitely need
They do this by kicking Eponine and Azelma out so the Social Services People...of 1832...will only see the momes
which if anything means they are applying for less welfare than they are entitled to
but the song is in minor key and the Ts are transparently bad parents so this is supposed to be Evil somehow , and we're all supposed to cheer when the cops arrest them and then do not help the kids at all
It's hare to tell because the costuming in the version I saw was very haphazard but I think the cops?? were only posing as social workers? So they could arrest the Ts for a totally different crime? But we're still supposed to cheer when they arrest the parents because haha , they were poor and bad! Who do they think they are, asking for *checks notes* financial aid they are entirely entitled to have?
the cops are the good guys?? sort of?? they keep showing up to arrest the Ts and the show always frames it as a good thing
the revolutionaries...are also the good guys
I was very unclear on how the revolutionaries died but hilariously they ALL die, even Marius , because there's no Valjean in this
oh yeah, there's no Valjean, no onscreen Cosette, and no named Javert, though there are cop characters who could be Javert
there IS Mabeuf, and Eponine goes to him for info about Marius, but the show seems to think he's called "Father" Mabeuf for religious reasons, oh no
I was also unclear about what they were fighting for, which is an absolute trip when this was an uprising with an exceptionally clear and direct purpose ("MONARCHY BAD, REMOVE MONARCH BY FORCE IF NECESSARY")
I was VERY clear on the momes naming themselves Grizzly and Croissant
I am not gonna forget that possibly ever , my loved ones will gather round me and I'll murmur " but those names...are so bad...they aren't even easy to use in...a song" and Perish and my last thoughts will be of frigging Gavroche The Musical , a dire fate
Azelma and the momes live and go to America alone?? and have a great life?? does anyone remember what happened in the book. Does anyone remember what was happening in the US in this time period?? certainly THIS musical does not!
It is pretty directly stated that Grizzly and/or Croissant came back to Paris to tell his family's story--which, I gotta say, he has no way to know since most of it happened when he wasn't around and no one survived to tell him about it -- and became the tour guide in the first scene
but the tour guide in the first scene showed them the Gavroche statue
..that statue went up in 1904
This is Love Never Dies levels of Timelines Happening
Gavroche the Musical 2 is gonna be about Gavroche running an amusement park on coney island
ngl I'd watch that
I haven't covered HALF the things About the Show
I gotta apologize to action movies for making fun of "well THAT happened" dialogue because truly. It IS an emotion, and it's the one I'm feeling now.
#Gavroche the Musical#this is not a review#this is a stunned rambling Statement without Eye powers to make it coherent

I saw Les Misérables live recently right. I have literally never had a more emotionally moving experience in my life. I wept so hard I genuinely thought I would faint. ENJ AND R DIDN'T DIE HOLDING HANDS. Instead they set up a found family dynamic between Grantaire and Gavroche. Then they had Gavroche die. And then they had Grantaire weakly try to resuscitate him then give up and cry over his body. Then when Enjolras died Grantaire was the last one standing and he climbed to the top of the barricade and exposed his chest to be shot. I LOST IT. THEY ARE KILLING ME HERE.
Fun fact!! "Les Misérables" is not actually referring to the characters in the story, rather to the audience after watching this 3 hour long gut-wrenchingly beautiful musical play out /nsrs

Les Misérables 1980
I have already talked about Les Misérables , but I wanted to expand on the subject a little more, by detailing the three French versions as best I can !!
This strange idea of adapting Victor Hugo's novel into a musical came from Alain Boublil after he attended a performance of the musical Oliver! play in London ( he reports having perceived in his mind a resemblance between Oliver Twist and Gavroche )
Carried away by what he considers (rightly) as a flash of genius, he will work in collaboration with Claude-Michel Schönberg and Jean-Marc Natel to compose the music and lyrics for the future album
Fortunately the album will experience its small success with the public, this victory will make the creators grow wings who will launch head first into the torrent of stage creation !
This heavy task will be entrusted to Robert Hossein , an French director, actor, screenwriter, dialogue writer , who will use his fame to the best of his ability to promote the show (which he would be criticized for and mocked , trample his enthusiasm)
The very first production of Les Misérables was created and then performed in Paris at the Palais des Sports in September 1980
Scheduled for a minimum of eight weeks, it will be played for sixteen weeks, with the Palais des sports no longer available beyond that With 107 performances, it attracted around 500,000 spectators
( I don't know how it works in the United Kingdom and the United States at the same time but in France it will be necessary to reach the end of the 90s for the musicals to travel throughout the country + outside of France )
DISTRIBUTION :
Maurice Barrier : Jean Valjean
Jean Vallée : Javert
Rose Laurens : Fantine
Yvan Dautin : Mr Thénardier
Marie-France Roussel : Mrs Thénardier
Maryse Cédolin / Sylvie Camacho / Priscilla Patron : little Cosette
( alternately the little girls also played little Eponine and Azelma )
Fabienne Guyon : Cosette
Marianne Mille : Éponine
Cyrille Dupont / Fabrice Ploquin / Florence Davis : Gavroche
Gilles Buhlmann : Marius
Christian Ratellin : Enjolras
René-Louis Baron : Combeferre
Dominique Tirmont : Mr Gillenormand
Anne Forrez : Mrs Gillenormand
Claude Reva : Storyteller
There remain too few archives of the original shows, unfortunately at the time filming in theaters and performance halls was not a common reflex ...
I did my best to find as much as possible :
youtube
youtube
Unreleased Javert song, not kept in the album and show ⤵️
youtube
youtube
The Full Live Recording of the Show :
youtube
ANECDOTES :
If I'm not mistaken, this is the only version that uses the character of Azelma , the sister of Eponine and Gavroche
...
Cyrille Dupont, one of the three kids who played Gavroche, was known vocally for singing the theme song for Nobody's Boy : Remi
( In French " Remi sans famille " ) :
youtube
...
Florence Davis one of three actors playing Gavroche was a girl ?!
Strange artistic choice ? Or last-rescue liner ??
youtube
...
Robert Hossein was so marked by this show that two years later, he made a film adaptation of the original novel !!
Starring the legend Lino Ventura as Jean Valjean and the very young Emmanuel Curtil as Gavroche (this little boy is today an ICONIC voice actor in France : Jim Carrey, Mike Myers, Matthew Perry and many many others characters )
The Full Movie :
youtube
While I'm writing about the 1990 and 2024 versions, I recommend you take a look at my Masterlist :)

I was recently treated to a weekend production of the musical “Les Misérables”, noticed something about the musical I haven’t noticed before, and now I’m mad.
Specifically, I’m mad at the moment Javert looks down and sees little Gavroche dead in the street. Because it occurred to me that had Javert not been such a blind and stupid idiot, he could have done for Gavroche what Jean Valjean did for Cosette. The parent child match ups are perfect too. The ex-convict lovingly cares for the world’s sweetest little orphan girl while the unforgiving officer is reluctantly sent the world’s most arrogant and disrespectful orphaned street boy.
Of course, Javert would adopt Gavroche rather begrudgingly, first just trying to drag this belligerent troublemaking child off the streets so he can send him to some orphanage or workhouse, but pesky Gavroche escapes his clutches each time, just like the criminal Jean Valjean. As the incidents occur, Javert, himself having been born into poverty, experiences sympathy for Gavroche (against his wishes) and tries to give the boy some food and teach him the value of the law and a hard day’s work. Gavroche of course is not having it, but eventually Gavroche’s innocence, optimism, and concern for his fellow man win over Javert’s frozen heart while Javert’s realism and discipline give Gavroche some direction and something to dream of other than dying in battle at the age of 12. Then later when “the stars are black and cold” and Javert finds himself in the world of Jean Valjean, a world where God’s justice is born of mercy rather than ✨the law✨, Javert hardly has time to care or contemplate throwing himself off a bridge, because he needs to make sure Gavroche is okay and out of trouble. Unless of course Javert is already dead because he took a bullet for him at the barricade, which would also work.

here are my notes from last night's Les Mis performance on West End (mostly Grantaire related whoopsie)
i have way too much shit to say I still haven't processed my emotions so bear with me
Gavroche saying “Aye aye governor” to Javert right before Stars! This kid is d( ̄◇ ̄)b💯ᵖᵉʳᶠᵉᶜᵗ
Grantaire staying carefully away from Enjolras during Red and Black… before slapping the ever living hell out of Enjolras’ butt??? Sir??? Where did that confidence come from???
Gavroche being Grantaire's son, and Enjolras trying to also be a figurehead for him (does he want to be included? Is he doubtful of R's capacity as a parent? You decide!)
Everyone roasting Marius (even someone shouting “Shut up Marius”)! Beautiful! Applauded!!!
Cosette rushing to help Éponine off the floor after Thénardier slaps her.. Then holding her hands as they stare in each other's eyes **lesbians intensifies**
Grantaire being drunk af during One Day More, but taking a step to be seen by Enjolras, then Enjolras giving him a smile and a pat on the shoulder before going in front of him!!! I can't!!! 🥺
Grantaire trying to help but also keeping himself clearly separated from the rest of the boys during Here Upon These Stones
Gavroche being a little shit™
GAVROCHE EXPOSING JAVERT, GRANTAIRE GIVING HIM HIS BOTTLE SO HE CAN PUT THE KID ON A TABLE AND GAVROCHE DOWNING IT'S CONTENT AND R JUST RUFFLING HIS HAT
Gavroche and Grantaire being the first ones to find Éponine and Marius in A Little Fall of Rain, and Grantaire holding him the whole time
Enjolras going to comfort Marius when Éponine dies and Grantaire keeping him from doing it so Gavroche can go instead
Gavroche giving Marius Éponine's hat 😭😭
Enjolras trying to go and comfort Grantaire during his existential crisis in Drink with Me, but him running away from Enjolras before Gavroche practically tackles him in a back hug on the wall!!!
Everyone looking at Grantaire when Gavroche rushes over the barricade
Enjolras running to catch Gavroche when he's shot then giving him to Grantaire and looking absolutely destroyed
Grantaire yelling “You bastards” during the barricade call
Even after the final battle begins, Grantaire still stays back, he's not ready to start fighting yet. But then he sees Enjolras and he be running to be shot too
Grantaire’s actor's sleeve got caught on a piece of the set so his arms were in the most awkward position for the Bring Him Home reprise
Enjolras being brought out in a cart, Javert blessing Gavroche’s dead body before signaling to a police man to put him on a cart with Enjolras
Empty Chairs at Empty Tables! Enjolras and Grantaire being next to each other, then face to face, THEY'RE NARRATIVE FOILS
Valjean saying “must-a” in an almost Italian accent in Who Am I reprise… twice
May I present M. Thénardier “I wish I would've married your sister” and his wife “I wish you were dead”
Enjolras and Grantaire holding Gavroche between them at the end of the show, Enjolras was accepted as a figurehead and Grantaire gets his man they're in paradise I'm not sobbing you are

can someone tell me why in every official recent production of les miserables in drink with me, enjolras always gets brushed off by grantaire. it's always the same blocking EVEN KYLE ADAMS AND DEVIN ARCHER.
i've seen so many older bootlegs and they used to all be slightly unique and then they all began to have the exact same blocking- enjolras goes to comfort grantaire, grantaire pushes him off, goes off to the side, gavroche goes to comfort him. why is that?? i miss the uniqueness of that specific moment :(

God, if you told me a month ago I would be knee-deep in a Grantaire and subsequently Grantaire/Enjolras and subsequently Enjolras obsession.....
#this is the fault of mr. grantaire in the production i saw#kyle adams#he was so good#like grantaire and gavroche killed me#drink with me 'could it be your death means nothing at all? is your life just one more life?' killed me#god the way grantaire like helplessly went from person to person after gavroche's death. until he ended up at enjolras's side#god the way enjolras cupped his cheek in a moment of comfort. of tenderness. of dare i say love#only for enjolras to turn to the barricade#for his first love will always be the cause#but after all wasn't enjolras's devotion to the cause why grantiare fell in love with him to begin with?#god but the way grantaire reached after him for a moment after enjolras turned towards the barricade?#ugggghh#anyway#between this and my rekindled obsession with phantom i am truly going back to my roots#shoutout ramin karimloo gina beck and simon bailey you will always be famous#shoutout mr. grantaire kyle adams#and shoutout mx. riotstar on ao3 for beautiful & good aka the best enjolras/grantaire fic of all time#if anyone has any grantaire/enjolras fic recs PLEASE#rip jordan donica javert though#so eternally jealous of people that got to see that live#get👏him👏in👏a tour👏so i can see him#les mis#musicals

What's the deal with Gavroche?
Why can he break the fourth wall? My wife says it's "because he's the narrator" but I feel you can't introduce a narrator in the second act and Paris/Look Down and Stars aren't really enough fourth wall breaks to count as a narrator. So why does the musical include this?

(realizing before I post this that I prob. need to clarify here that I'm talking about Gavroche the Musical and not anything else)
I'm sorry I just can't get over how the Thenardier's ONLY Evil Scheme we see them pull onstage is "attempting to apply for welfare, which they definitely need, but they're tacky and mean so they shouldn't have it"
we're sooort ooof informed about other crimes but this is the only one that happens where the audience can see it , the proof of how evil they are
trying to get money for poor families with dependent children...as a poor family with dependent children
it's just such an utterly Reaganite take on The Evils of Welfare
"what if this money goes to bad poor people?? what if the children of bad tacky people have food?? WHAT THEN. "
plot outlines by Javert I swear
#this show leaves all social bigotry WILDLY unexamined#Gavroche the Musical#just. absolutely horrid take
