Just to add MORE confusion to the general Jenova Project timeline, I found this image of what I presume is from an official Crisis Core guide that suggests that Sephiroth (and Gen and Angeal) are all “around 25″.
And while I would agree with this estimation based on their designs as well as the overall time it would have taken in between Ever Crisis and Crisis Core for them to have become very good friends, the Jenova Project is listed as starting in the fall of 1977, with Crisis Core starting in 2000. Assuming the period of pregnancy began right after the project was sanctioned and taking into account 9 months plus whatever amount of spacing in between when the trio were all born, it still doesn’t fully add up. AND the ultimate guide suggests that they were born around 1980 (which I completely disagree with because there is no way Angeal is 20 at the start of CC like NO FRIGGIN’ WAY).
The guide already has some sketchy segments like Gast supposedly leaving timeline-wise when Seph was a newborn despite the fact that Sephiroth talks of openly knowing him and having enough awareness to have held conversations with him, as well as get a general impression of what kind of scientist he is. And then there’s the suggestion that Lucrecia stuck around for several years after Sephiroth’s birth and left at some indeterminate period of time, which isn’t the impression I really got from Dirge. It feels like she left around only a year or so, maybe less. How long did Vincent say he was asleep for? HHHHH so messyyy.
Anyway, I’m going to put a pin on things and say that the trio is around 22.5 at the start of Crisis Core and 24.5 by the end (except Angeal he’s dead by then lol whoops). Even that still feels a bit too young from how they present themselves. I’ve always envisioned that Sephiroth is around 30 at the time of Final Fantasy 7 but whatever.
The irony is that there’s enough room that, with a few tweaks, clarifications, and slight changes to established lore, you could make this all make sense.

Aerith, you’re an Angel
Happy birthday, Aerith!
Do you know the only two men who ever called Aerith an angel?
Her father, Gast Faremis, when she was born, and
her first lover, Zack Fair. when they meet for the first time.

Boule de Neiges WIP
Hm...

There are a lot of weird, unanswered, and potentially unsavoury things about Gast Faremis and Ifalna’s relationship but the fact that Professor Gast is the ultimate wife and daughter guy is hilarious.
#final fantasy vii#gast faremis#ifalna#aerith gainsborough#you know gast would be that guy who shoves his daughter's picture in the face of anyone willing to listen

Friends, Sephiroth fans, countrymen:
This meta post was sparked by Sephiroth Week's day 1 prompt, "Innocence," but it's been a long time coming and a long time sorely needed. In it, I beseech you to reconsider a character you may not have given much thought to that we might join hands in the light of the Truth:
Professor Gast is a fucking asshole.
I know, we know so little of him and it's very tempting to trust Sephiroth's high regard for the man. But! If we operate from the assumption that Sephiroth is around 30 in the game and 25 in Nibelheim (and I believe crisis core suggests 28), then accounting for the time Ifalna's pregnancy would take we can conclude that his last contact with this man was at the age of 7. Even if Sephiroth were a reasonably good judge of character (and let's face it, the man struggles to accept hard truths), that's a very young age to form an opinion of someone with an extremely redacted amount of information.
Listen. We all know Hojo is an asshole, and some of us even like him for it. But why should Gast get off with the blessing of his foremost victim just because he demonstrates slightly more restraint in his mad science practice? He DID lead the Jenova project after all. For as much as Hojo is inclined to inject her cells into people willy-nilly, it was Gast's idea in the first place!
And sure, he may not have been involved in quite as torrid a love affair as his coworkers, but do you really think his relationship with Ifalna wasn't questionably ethical? She began as his subject, after all, and though we have no idea how they met we do know that Shinra eventually learned enough about them to track them down. They may well have met through the labs before Gast had a sudden attack of conscience - which, by the way? Also led him to abandoning the genetically engineered 7 year old that was at least partially in his care. If he was in hiding or aiming to protect Ifalma, he certainly wasn't looking out for ALL his subjects, is all I'm saying.
All of this is to say that Professor Gast is at best a shortsighted, irresponsible and incredibly selfish man and at worst a cruel and callous one who does all of the mad scientist with none of the verve of presentation. Though his relationship with Sephiroth is touching and wrenching for it's tragedy, please take this opportunity to amend your perhaps too generous opinion. Write it into your fics and into your hearts: Gast was never, ever innocent.

Angsty today, plz elaborate on Sephs abandonment issues
Sephiroth has always had them, to the point where his abandonment issues have essentially shaped the person he's become.
Even as a very small infant, part of him was still reeling from his separation from Lucrecia mere seconds after being born. Thanks to the Jenova cells, they are bound together, hence her future visions of him. He can always feel her, always sense her even when she's far away. There's always been some niggling, confusing sensation within him that evokes the feeling of being torn away, being ripped apart from something he longs to touch and feel beyond all comprehension. He believes his mother to be dead, and yet he can feel the ripples of his connection to her, shredded, permanently separated, driving him insane.
Gast soothes these early feelings of abandonment by becoming his father figure, providing a warm feeling of safety and comfort, even though Sephiroth knows Gast is not his real father. When Gast leaves, this is the first direct instance of Sephiroth getting to watch someone exit his life, unable to prevent it, severing his sense of trust. Gast was his only true loved one, the only one he felt understood him. With him gone, Sephiroth is alone. And learning of Gast's eventual demise only makes the problem a million times worse.
Sephiroth closes himself off for a bit, focusing on training and entering into the Wutai War aloof and solitary, hardened through years of combat and early killing. He doesn't initially trust Angeal and Genesis, believing them just to be flighty fans who are more interested in his fame than who he is as a person. Their talent and ambition eventually wins him over though and they quickly begin to fill the emotional void that has consumed so much of his life. They can relate to him, understand him, provide him with resources of affection and support, even as he knows he will always be above them in terms of strength and skill. Despite the rising tension between him and Genesis with their budding rivalry, Sephiroth still trusts them, and still values them more than anything else in his life, even his loyalty to Shinra.
And then they leave. And the cycle has just repeated itself over again. Even worse, Angeal winds up dead--a crippling reminder of the death of Professor Gast. While Sephiroth briefly finds some level of solace in his growing relationship with Zack, his paranoia and bitterness are only becoming more and more apparent, feeling alone and adrift, conflicted in his loyalty to Shinra and severely questioning his identity and purpose. And when Genesis comes in to emotionally wound him at Nibelheim, Sephiroth finally reaches his breaking point. He loses faith in everyone, including Zack--who could have very well helped him. Every genuine connection he has ever made has only abandoned him or hurt him or both. He leaves Zack behind because he knows the inevitable will happen. And why not? He's just an experiment, one of Hojo's monsters. He was born alone, and alone is the only thing he will ever be.
Until Her.
He fully latches onto Jenova, viewing her as the only true salvation left. Jenova is his mother, the love and security and purpose he has always sought to cling to. Jenova cannot leave him, or forsake him. He comes from Jenova. Jenova is part of who he is. She will never betray him. And in the end, it's better to submit yourself to a welcoming darkness than to find yourself wandering alone and anguished for the rest of your days.
Thus, he chooses madness. And thereby cements his fate.

[[cellar door]]
he knew he had been in the cellar dozens, perhaps hundreds, of times, but he could not for the life of him remember exactly how he got there
he had distinct memories, quite clear… walking to the door, opening the door… closing the door and concealing it…
disembodied recollections, too, of working in the laboratory measuring the speed of dividing cells dating the Ancient sample how old was it how long had it been there in the ice how long had it been there?
yet always beyond his grasp, just beyond the frail tendrils of his neurons that connected memories, the passages that connected the rooms to one another, the flow of time that connected events
he sat once, in silence and concentration, and tried to recall. He had walked to the door, nestled in the stone wall, placed his hand, opened it one foot before the other
he comes to, his heart pounding, sweat tickling his hair
something he cannot find the something is object, not Subject, subject is he, but Subject is her he knows it isn’t her, she wanted to be found after all
when did they switch is it what wants to be forgotten, and she what wishes to be remembered? how many times has he remembered and how many forgotten
how many times through doors in stone, down and down The stairs through hollow eyes that seek to find
he wakes and he knows
the passages are gone for him the neurons the flows removed for his protection
every time, for just a moment, he feels just a little closer just for a heartbeat’s skip, the tickle against the white matter tantalizes him with the promise of a mystery, like an itch he can almost reach almost
the spider bite under his cast, his mother said not to touch it but he scratched with forks and sticks and nails until it bled because he would not leave it her alone
the secret beckons oblivion calls an eye gazes from the void a fractal spiraling of dna spirals upon spirals upon spirals
he wonders sometimes, what it was like to be encased for two millennia and other times he wonders just how many seasons have passed outside the walls how thickly the ivy has grown over the bricks of the mansion
how long he has resisted the call the invitation of oblivion of her of It
solve for x
his mother told him to leave it alone, leave it be but he couldn’t the itching would drive him mad itch itch itch
what lies in the passages beyond the cellar door
they say don’t look down or you’ll fall
but how else will you know what lies beneath

Aerith and Her Mothers’ Loss of Their Lover Parallel
Ifalna: Gast Faremis worked in Shinra as Head of Scientist. He left the project upon discovering Jenova is not a Cetra and continued his research on the Cetra in his laboratory at Icicle Inn. As he helped a captive Ifalna, the true remaining Cetra, they escape together and hide. Later they both fell in love and Aerith was born. They are tracked down by Shinra. Hojo, coming with some infantrymen, shot Gast to death protecting Ifalna and 7 days Aerith from being taken away. Hojo keeps Gast's true fate a secret from Shinra and what happened to Gast's body is unknown.
Elmyra: Her husband, Mr. Gainsborough, worked in Shinra as infantryman who was sent into Wutai War. The war took several years and she patiently waited for him to come home. As he informed he would due to go on leave. she came to train station to pick him up but he never come. Instead, she discovered 7 years old Aerith with her dying mother, Ifalna, who begged her to protect Aerith before passing away. With Aerith’s Cetra power, the kid told her that his husband has returned to the Planet. She didn’t believe it at first till the notification letter from Shinra arrived that he was killed in the war.
Aerith: Zack Fair worked in Shinra as 1st Class SOLDIER. Confronting his mentor in Shinra HQ, he was crashed down into Sector 5 Slum and met 16 years old Aerith. The two then were dating and become intimate with each other. One day, he left for a mission and by phone call, he promised her to come visit. But an accident happen and he was taken by Hojo for Sephiroth Copy experiment. Shinra reported him killed in action but Aerith, with her Cetra power, know he isn’t. Thus, she wrote letters hoping to reach him. She waited and waited till five years then passes and finally one day, same as how she could tell her adoptive mom that her husband died, she also sense Zack’s life fading away and finally return to Planet. Shinra keep his true fate a secret and what happened to his body is unknown. The truth is, 4 years after the incident, Zack escaped from Shinra facility and being on the run for 9 months, but he’s tracked down and shot to death by three remaining troops from one battalion army he fought.
.
See the pattern here?
All the men worked for Shinra (or used to).
Both Gast and Zack escape and hide ‘til they’re tracked down and shot to death by a few infantrymen. Hojo is responsible for this, their death is kept as secret, bodies are abandoned.
Both Mr. Gainsborough and Zack was last seen because they’re sent for mission, Elmyra and Aerith wait for them for years to come home.... only to get their death notification happened far from them.
