Watching the new Alex Jones doc, which is heavy on the alt right response to Sandy Hook and the gun rhetoric that followed... so yeah I thought of when I was teaching during #GunFreeUT back in 2015 as a PhD student in Austin. I would have been about 25. When people came to my workplace and the state said that the students had been complaining* about how frightened they were to be away from their firearms for twenty minutes. When the entire campus was newly declared acceptable for open carry of ducking semiautomatic rifles. The undergrad who organized #CocksNotGlocks, who accurately pointed out that state obscenity laws banned sex toys in public to appeal to people's comfort and sensibilities, but would not consider such a thing for deadly weapons. As I recall, she drew massive waves of harassment from random people who were actual alt right adults with jobs and lives, not college students. I think she had to take a gap year.
*in fact the law was extremely unpopular among the UT Austin student body, most of who were horrified by having to confront the possibility of deadly weapons belonging to fuck only knows whom in not only their workplace but their homes.
I remember standing in a room for staff resistance through #GunFreeUT, the smell of the room, the texture of the cotton shirt I wore. The hastily organized attempts to carve out any freedom we could. The horrified stipulations about whether firearms could be kept out of classrooms themselves if not campuses (no), and the fretful whispers about what the state had declared about our offices, how we were going to be able to declare them gun free zones... If we agreed that students with concealed carry licenses could choose to meet with us somewhere where the gun was allowed to go. The group that announced it was going to celebrate its new open carry status by staging a school shooting on campus, the shooter of course to be played by a "good guy with a gun." The university announcing that they had interceded and made clear to the group that this re enactment could not take place, so they kicked the demonstration a couple of blocks away. Happened at a local gas station.
I was still seeing sad flyers from office staff and teachers saying things like PLEASE NO GUNS IN THIS SPACE when I graduated with my PhD in 2020, the first winter the pandemic was in full swing. I remember the texture of the paper the last time I saw it vividly. I catch myself starting to think about the campus school stabbing I would teach through in 2017 and any one of a hundred more rearguard final stands between the city and the state and—
Okay, that's where I got up and walked off to get a soda. You're getting me now after I've had a minute.
That's a classic PTSD flashback, in case you're wondering. At no time do my senses report anything to my mind about anything unusual happening in the room. At no time, while I remember these things, do I believe that I am currently in danger for my life. It's a strong, vivid memory, but only a memory.
But it's a memory that grabs you by the mind and shakes you. That's a flashback. It's a classic simple PTSD flashback as a consequence of fear and stress sustained over time. Other folks around me who think maybe PTSD or maybe cPTSD applies to you, if you're hung up on not thinking you get anything like flashbacks?
That's what a flashback is from the inside. Your brain is running over the memory of the thing that forever changed your estimation of safety. Just in case you might forget.
Just, you know. In case anyone is wondering.

a love letter to my favorite game
My favorite game is unlike any game I’ve played, comparing it to anything else i’ve played feels unfair, it’s barely a game but it could occupy my top 10 games by itself
It isn’t the most fun, engaging, adrenaline rush ever, ultrakill or titanfall have it comfortably beat in that category
It doesn’t have the most well constructed narrative, signalis has more intrigue and disco elysium is a better character study
but all of those are constructed, you always feel the hand of the author
There are games with better character creators, but they don’t let you actually *play* your characters
in baldurs gate you can change basically anything about your appearance, but at the end of the day the preset dialogue the developers came up with is your only real option for roleplaying
which is understandable, letting a character say *anything* would be basically impossible, there’s no way for an AI to account for every possibility. Though it still feels like half measure, like i’m playing a customized variant of a default character
The trick is to pack 100+ people into a game and let the situation unfold
A simulated space station with simulated air, you need a proper mix of Nitrogen and Oxygen or else you’ll suffocate (or waste oxygen)
your characters body is the most in depth health bar i’ve seen in a game
you have blood, everyone has an appropriate blood type, and getting the wrong type is toxic. If you get shot the bullet can cause internal bleeding, which you need surgery to fix.
The same bullet can hit your bone, breaking it, a broken hand won’t let you hold something, a broken leg will slow you down, a broken skull will be very bad for any important organs that happen to be in it
if you get hurt enough, your body goes into shock
it gets harder to breathe, you gasp for air and collapse onto the ground, struggling to get back up before dying, if you don’t get medical attention you will inevitably die
The Station itself is similar to a body, needing a working engine to pump electricity through the hull, making sure the lights stay on and the doors keep working
Breaches in the hull leak air out, needing an engineer to fix it before the room succumbs to vacuum, if the station computer gets a virus it can pump flammable gas into the same hallways, leading to the most lethal analogue for a fever since plague inc
And every person, the doctor that keeps you from bleeding out, the engineer that keeps the station powered, the security guard that makes sure the law is obeyed
every single one is a real, living human, a person who logs in to the server to play
the stories that this makes is unmatchable, you do something and everyone acts in the unpredictable but sane way that humans do
what happens when a crewmember takes a contract from a rival corporation, or said rival corporation decides that nuking your station would be a good idea
how do people react to a creature straight out of The Thing replacing a crewmate
what happens when a vampire starts abducting people and enthralling them?
what if a Space Wizard attacks?
No round is the same, and I haven’t even talked about half the jobs
There is something to love for anyone
there’s combat with more true to life pacing than dedicated shooters
there’s roleplay with more reactive characters than any constructed narrative
there’s always a way to optimize a system a bit more, always a reason to come back
It is my favorite game, it’s barely a game, it’s a playable movie
I spent my whole life learning lessons from media i watch, because they’re all meant to have a purpose, something to say
but i get really annoyed when someone does something stupid, i wonder what i would have done in their situation, i wouldn’t monologue before killing my victim, i wouldn’t go into the dark hallway with a xenomorph hiding in it
i know i’d find some other way to fuck up, and Space Station 13 gives me the chance to
I see this game in everything, it’s addicting enough that i barely realize i’ve been playing it for 8 hours straight, i have my current *real job* because of this game
and it’s free, short of donating to the people hosting the server, or the people working on the engine itself, you cannot spend money on this game
this game is older than i am, based in an engine that predates Y2K, and nothing released since has captured its magic
Play Space Station 13, you might not like it, it took me 2 tries over 3 years for it to click, but once it did I had hundreds of hours in my first few months of playing
as for where to start? Paradise Station is pretty cool. GoonStation (yes that’s its real name) is way more advanced than any other codebase, at the cost of lag. /TG/ is pretty ubiquitous, at least some code fragments from there are in every server.
Personally, i recommend Para, but each station i mentioned has an appeal to someone
If anyone who reads this gets a bit curious and does any amount of research into the game, I’ll be happy
thank you for your time, and I’ll see you in outer spess
#space station 13#ss13#rambling#the first person to compare this game to among us will be ground into a fiberous powder#mothposting

Elmore Bolling, he was too successful.
Elmore Bolling, whose brothers called him Buddy, was a kind of one-man economy in Lowndesboro, Ala. He leased a plantation, where he had a general store with a gas station out front and a catering business; he grew cotton, corn and sugar cane. He also owned a small fleet of trucks that ran livestock and made deliveries between Lowndesboro and Montgomery. At his peak, Bolling employed as many as 40 people, all of them African like him.
One December day in 1947, a group of white men showed up along a stretch of Highway 80 just yards from Bolling’s home and store, where he lived with his wife, Bertha Mae, and their seven young children. The men confronted him on a section of road he had helped lay and shot him seven times — six times with a pistol and once with a shotgun blast to the back. His family rushed from the store to find him lying dead in a ditch.
The shooters didn’t even cover their faces; they didn’t need to. Everyone knew who had done it and why. “He was too successful to be a Negro,” someone who knew Bolling told a newspaper at the time. When Bolling was killed, his family estimates he had as much as $40,000 in the bank and more than $5,000 in assets, about $500,000 in today’s dollars. But within months of his murder nearly all of it would be gone. White creditors and people posing as creditors took the money the family got from the sale of their trucks and cattle. They even staked claims on what was left of the family’s savings. The jobs that he provided were gone, too. Almost overnight the Bollings went from prosperity to poverty. Bertha Mae found work at a dry cleaner. The older children dropped out of school to help support the family. Within two years, the Bollings fled Lowndes County, fearing for their lives.
Elmore Bolling and his wife, Bertha Mae Nowden Bolling, in Alabama circa 1945.

sometimes i’m really glad frank is famous because if i saw this dude at a gas station or something i would literally become enchanted my gaze would zero in on him like the auto aim feature in a shooter game i would drop everything i was holding and stop in my tracks and my peripheral vision would fade into darkness except for the spotlight illuminating his fucking angel face. i would stand there like an idiot watching him buy his energy drinks or whatever and then gaze out the window with huge eyes as he walked to his car and drove away and then i would leave without buying anything and live the rest of my life with an ache in my chest for this man who had captivated my every sense but who probably didn’t even notice i was standing there and i don’t know if i could live the rest of my life knowing i would never see him again

Hello. If you don't mind, I'd like to ask for headcanons about the kuro characters and their favourite video game genres/series? ^_^
Absolutely.
Kuro characters and their favourite video game genres/series
don't know why, but he looks like he'd enjoy simulator games
if Black Butler would've happened in the modern day (and someone would've taught this grandpa how to use technology) he would probably used these to learn the things he needs to know as a human
cooking simulator (or Cooking Mama), school simulator, anything that could be useful like that
definitely also enjoys slasher games
simply judging by the way he enjoyed that bloodbath on the Campania, he'd looooooove extremely violent games
idk, I don't know too many in that genre, but Dead by Daylight could be one of his faves
but nothing with guns. Those things are beneath him. He wants the real thrill of the kill
oh, please, as if he'd even know what that is
he doesn't even have time for this
imagine the hours wasted on lines of code and digital pixels
do you know that one game where it's basically like a VR job simulator with different kinds of jobs like cook or office or gas station? Instead of humans, the NPCs are robots that insult you at every given opportunity and set you up for failure. Yeah, he'd like that.
also, Powerwash Simulator
ok, stereotypical, but dress up games
especially Style Savvy (ngl, these games are way too good)
other than that, she seems like a casual enjoyer of Animal Crossing
except that she bullies all the ugly neighbours off of her island and hunts for very specific characters (so basically like me)
another obvious choice is Bayonetta
I mean, have you looked at her? Slashing her way through demons and angels while having chainsaws for arms and legs? The cunty outfits?
Let me tell you: Bayonetta and Grell? An iconic match made in heaven
I can't decide
either he's a die-hard Mario Kart player or a huge Sonic enthusiast (the older games, not the newer ones)
he probably doesn't have enough time to really play though, since he's either out working overtime or out partying
he doesn't seem like a shooter person
okay, this is coming out of me because of a huge lack of sleep (it's currently 1 am where I'm living), but why does he look like he would drunkenly play Fortnite or Roblox?
"You got games on your phone?" No, back the fuck up dude. You're an adult.
Why did I just write that? Inco, what's wrong with you?
this is very specific, but that one Coraline game for the Wii and the DS
he's definitely leaning more towards psychological horror games
American McGee's Alice and Alice: Madness Returns. You can't convince me otherwise
he's an unfairly skilled Mario Kart player, to the point that it almost seems like he's cheating (he's 100% cheating, just like when playing Uno)
on the other hand, he's a huuuuge sucker for Kirby games
doesn't matter what type or gimick, he loves it and has perfected it down to the last frame
but you'd never know unless he wanted you to know (and I know it because I am God and run on my last bar of my batterie and because he's officially and undeniably my husband, deal with it. Omfg, this is so fucking cringe, I'm gonna go shoot myself, I'll be right back.)
well, first of all, you need to explain everything to him because he couldn't even read the instructions on the screen (I'm 100% convinced that his eyesight is pure batshit and he's just cheating his way through the manga through some deus-ex-machina type of shit)
newsflash, but he loves horror games
I really see him with games like Resident Evil or Don't Starve Together
also, Undetale
you know, because of morals and choices and consequences and all that (surely not because of a skeleton with dry humour)
maybe it would help to show him a bathing simulator so this crusty man learns how to clean himself
is it too obvious and on the nose to say The Mortuary Assistant?
omg, look at him! My boy! Finally animated! I love him so much! My boy!
ahem, so anyway...
Trombone Champ
he'd play it on his loudest speakers just to annoy the hell out of everyone
also, you know those really cheap horror games you can find on Steam that are really terrible? He lives for those
idk why, but he seems like he'd enjoy Portal
and Assassin's Creed. Especially the first four mainline games
continueing with puzzle games, he really enjoys Professor Layton, no doubt
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That's it for now. It's almost 2 am and I have to help out at a sports event I only registered for to watch some random kids suffer in the heat. But now I have to wake up early for that... Oh, how ironically bitchy life is. And to top it all of I have to work the graveyard shift today. Coffee and energy will be my best friend today.
So, yeah, that's it for now. Or maybe not, maybe I'll pull an all-nighter simply so I can't oversleep. If you're up for a part 2 just slide into my requests and I'll see what I can do.
Until then~

Thanks For Letting Me Sleep On Your Floor
Awkward words, weird connections A master of conspiracy theories and demonology He had a brain that I could have picked forever And he may have moved a little strange And he spoke in irreverence As if there wasn't a topic left that didn't bore him
Late nights, first person shooters Keep the soundtrack loud and banging A conversation about the definitions of love and what it all means Answers only made by stoned philosophers who can barely remember their own last names
Like a skeleton, such pale skin And even a pair of paler blue Like ice, I want to skate along your irises Hair so blonde it hurt the important parts of the eye I live in ten boxes and he lives unpacked I don't like putting down roots I'm a flight rick to myself.
Walks before sunrise, skateboards and bikes That tiny city was ours for three whole months He pushed the doctrine and I charmed new members I'd had enough practise lying that I'd become a pro of manipuation Our solid attempt at forming a cult Starting relegion over hot dogs from the gas station They gave them to use for free, because they were old shrivled and dry
One bedroom apartment, brown leather couch The days are always winding to an end And we're playing survival games While just talking in depth to what feelings really mean Stoned perfect chit-chat to accompany the rising morning sun

muse: Daryl Dixon limit: 18+ only please, mutuals and non-mutuals set: TWD-verse, semi-recently settled at the prison open to: other TWD/TLOU/horror muses, multifandom crossovers, ocs, whatever! triggers: death/dead body, guns, self-loathing
Was it weird that Daryl was doing better after the world ended than he ever had before the walkers? There was probably some metaphor in there about death and things that thrived on decay, but he didn't know what it was. Maybe it was the absence of Merle from his life, as guilty as he felt thinking something like that. He owed everything to his asshole older brother, probably wouldn't even be alive right now if it weren't for him, but the sorry truth of it was that he could breathe easier out from under his shadow. He still hoped--in the way people hoped for things that weren't very likely--that he was alive out there somewhere, but he didn't see how he would ever know for sure. Even before the dead started walking, it was too easy for people like them to disappear between the cracks. If Merle didn't want to be found, he wouldn't be, and it was just as true now as it had been before.
The group had tentatively settled in the prison after the farm had been overrun. Fuckin' ironic, was what it was. He'd managed to avoid prison, narrowly at times, all his life. Then the world ended, and guess where he found himself? He wavered back and forth on feeling safe and feeling trapped there, but that was Daryl all over. Safety always felt a little like a trap to him, and things with his friends(?) were new enough that he didn't fully trust any of it. In his experience, people always turned on you. It was just a matter of when. He'd be ready to bolt when that happened, but he didn't kid himself that it wouldn't hurt this time. He liked them; they were good. There were moments he'd started to believe they liked him too, but he wasn't. Good. Trying to be wasn't the same thing.
There was talk of turning some of the surrounding space into farmland, but it was still a long while before it would turn out anything edible, and Daryl was always one of the first to volunteer for scavenging missions. It wasn't just food they needed, since the prison storage had been well-stocked, but medicine and other supplies too. He was a couple days out, everything close by already picked over, and more or less enjoying the quiet. He didn't have to remind himself that he could survive out here alone fairly easily. He'd been doing it since well before the apocalypse and, away from all the eyes and voices, it was more like being able to draw a full breath for the first time in a while. This was his natural habitat, walkers or not.
The neighborhood was small, and as far as he could tell, nothing living had passed through recently. That didn't mean it was empty, and he didn't much want to get shot breaking into houses looking for canned goods and Tylenol. Better to find some sort of gas station or corner store. The sound of a gunshot broke the silence, not near enough to make him duck for cover, but loud enough to get the attention of every walker on the street. More shots narrowed it down to a specific house, the sounds erratically spaced like the shooter had been caught off guard--or didn't know what the hell they were doing. Running toward the noise was nothing short of idiotic, since he'd have to deal with both the shooter and the dead now stumbling in the same direction, but…
But. It was a person on the other end of that gun. He was learning that there were two kinds of people: ones who ran away from trouble to save their own skin, and ones who ran toward it and tried to help. Daryl was trying to be the kind of person who helped. He ran toward the noise. The time for subtlety had passed, so kicking the door in barely slowed him down. One walker dead on the living room floor. His head swiveled toward the stairs at the sound of something moving on the second floor. "Hello?" He was already moving toward them, but better to announce his presence. Whoever it was might have bullets left.

Sending love to you and your family. 💜 I live in the Northeast (MA) myself and it’s a truly heartwrenching time. 😔 Stay safe.
thank you love, i appreciate it 💜 there's dozens of cop cars and armored vehicles and helicopters and drones outside of his house in bowdoin right now but it's so confusing bc a swat team mounted up with tear gas shoulder launchers and long guns and moved up the driveway, but then a procession of vehicles including atf officers left i just want it to be over. grocery stores and gas stations are closed, schools are closed, there's a county-wide lockdown for androscoggin (where lewiston is) and sagadahoc (where bowdoin is), and this is a mass shooter with a recent history of mental illness who's hearing voices so he's unpredictable and i am scared beyond reason that he'll commit another shooting before he's caught

This week on NCIS: Origins, we flashed back to “Eight Months Ago,” when Gibbs (played by Austin Stowell) first returned home, on crutches, from Kuwait/Operation Desert Storm — to a tragically emptied house.
Gibbs didn’t live there long at all after, and instead relocated to a tiny apartment. His first visitor was Special Agent Mike Franks, stopping by on a day off. Franks, though, got no warm welcome.
“I wanna know why you are taking a day off,” Gibbs asked, while the man who killed my family is still out there!”
Franks had no easy answer, and instead brought Gibbs to see the car that Shannon and Kelly died in.
“Tell me…. Say it all,” Gibbs asked, eyeballing the wreckage. Franks recapped that Gibbs’ wife had witnessed a murder at a marina gas station, and ID’d as the trigger man a drug dealer for a Mexican cartel. That was enough to arrest the shooter, “but we couldn’t find him,” Franks explained.
Gibbs accused Franks of not protecting his wife. Franks made clear that they had assigned an agent, Mitchell, but he took a head shot while driving Gibbs’ wife and daughter to a safe house, and died instantly behind the wheel.
“And your wife and daughter—”
“Say their names,” Gibbs ordered.
“Shannon and Kelly died in the crash.”
Franks confirmed that Pedro Hernandez himself had fired the fateful shot, then fled to Mexico. “And once these guys cross the border, it gets complicated. We lost him.” Gibbs pressed Franks for any and all intel on Hernandez’s whereabouts, but Franks maintained, “You know everything I know, Gunny.”
Gibbs would proceed to pester Mary Jo with phone calls, and Franks himself with drop-bys, persisting in his pursuit of intel. It got to a point where Franks confronted a drunken Gibbs at his apartment. “You were supposed to protect her!” Gibbs again wailed, and when Franks spat back, “You think you’re doing Shannon proud?,” Gibbs slugged his future boss. Franks wrestled Gibbs to the floor, where Gibbs succumbed and softly wept.
“I didn’t want to be here anymore. That’s how I got hurt,” he said, alluding to his suicidal actions afetr first learning about Shannon and Kelly. “I can’t keep living with them gone that if the guy that did this is out there living, too.”
Gibbs’ confession clearly moves Franks, for the next time Gibbs came by NIS, Franks announced out loud, “I can’t tell you where the bastard is hiding, Gunny” — before plopping a file on the desk before him. The file on Hernandez. “I’m gonna take a leak,” Franks said, leaving Gibbs alone to do with the file what he may, which in this case meant quickly jotting down some notes on Pedro’s car and known locations.
“I was supposed to be dead,” narrator Gibbs said, “but after that, all I wanted was to be healed. All I wanted was to get off those damn crutches so I could go out and do what needed to be done.
“But the real heeling wasn’t about a cast or a broken bone,” narrator Gibbs continued. “It wasn’t about me at all, and it wasn’t about getting vengeance, either. It was about the one person” — Mike Franks — “who saw I was broken, and needed to be saved, and dropped everything to pick me up off the floor.”
That said, Flashback Gibbs now has everything he needs to go after Hernandez. But how soon will be embark on that revenge mission? The moment he is off those crutches?
We put that question to NCIS: Origins star Austin Stowell during his recent visit to TVLine’s New York office, and he answered, quite plainly:
“If someone you love was murdered… and all of the sudden you had the key to the door, and you knew that the person who was responsible for their death was on the other side of it… how long would you wait?”

Thoughts, part 3.
Back in 2017 I attempted suicide by cop, and was given a second change to clean up my life. So, I transitioned (male to female), quit drinking, and tried to walk the right path. Yet, another night goes by where I'm self harming with nobody to trust. I reported a mass shooter in 2021 who had expressed a desire to target a police station or federal building. The guy has a tattoo of a police officer being murdered on his arm, he owns multiple firearms (7.62 AR, 12 ga shotgun, .45 handgun, body armor, ...). He was never arrested, and I have to live in constant fear I'll see him one day on the news. Sadly, because I'm prone to self harm, some try to flip the report back on me or argue that I'm somehow "mentally ill" and call it fake. It's real. Very real. I've got so much hate for not hating the police. Almost every time I've said good things about LEOs I get swarmed with hate. Yet, even though I hurt myself when that happens, some choose to try to flip what I said about Sammie (mass shooter) back on me. Hell, people got angry at me for thanking law enforcement for help during dark times. Since 2022 some on Reddit have accused me of being paid by the CIA to post online, which, I've explained a few times to be untrue. I'm not paid by the CIA, and had a disclaimer in my bio that I was not affiliated with the U.S. government. Still, some use things from back in 2017 when people were gaslighting me into thinking I somehow worked at the government on a drug binge to argue that I'm somehow crazy now? What the fuck? The first time I fell for it, this time? No, too wise for that now.
In 2020 at the sandwich shop I mentioned in an earlier post, 3 coworkers messed with a police officer's food. I didn't laugh, I didn't take part. I even apologized to the officer for their behavior knowing he shouldn't have had to deal with it. Yet, if I mention it people only get angry at me calling me a liar, calling me crazy, the usual. I guess I just wonder why I cleaned up my life for nothing. In September of 2022 I reported someone giving out my SnapChat information to people I didn't know having them solicit me for sex against my will. The police didn't even investigate. That was the day a rape/sex trafficking case I was the victim in was presented to the DA's office. If investigated, could it have changed things? Who knows. I'm happy I transitioned, but find myself wondering why I got sober and chose a new path. All I've got is hate for it. I don't have many friends, and often get grouped up on by people talking shit. I'm on my own. I kept a pinky promise only to wind up widely hated, without support, and feeling forced to commit suicide from life stressors and online hate.
If I'd not reported Sammie I'd have forever felt guilt. On the flip side, for reporting him, I lost friends, support, and more. It just feels pointless. Whatever, another night of self harm. Nobody cares. People laughed when I got raped, they laughed when I faced workplace transphobia, people laugh because I live in fear for my life. There's no hope. Just darkness. Since I risked my life to report that mass shooter and only got hate, another night of self harm since apparently I never deserved love or support.

Biden meets top Chinese diplomat as rivals seek to manage tensions (Washington Post) Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi capped two days in Washington on Friday with an hour-long visit with President Biden at the White House, part of an ongoing effort to thaw relations between the two superpowers after a year of anger and distrust from both sides. In meetings, U.S. policymakers ticked down the list of frustrations the Biden administration has with Beijing, ranging from China’s role in the global fentanyl trade to its claims over the South China Sea. But they also appealed to the top Chinese diplomat to use his country’s influence over Russian behavior in Ukraine and now its potential sway over Iran in the Israel-Gaza conflict. The two sides emerged without having made breakthroughs, U.S. officials said, and the glimpses of interactions that they made public appeared frosty. But Wang’s visit was itself a positive marker for a relationship that U.S. officials say they have to manage carefully to address irritants between the two nations.
After Mass Shooting, Residents Emerge With Grit (NYT) The residents of Lewiston emerged from two long days of lockdown on Saturday into a city forever changed. Stores reopened. Sidewalks came to life. And the families of 18 people killed by a mass shooter here on Wednesday night tried to move on in a haze of grief, in a place that prides itself on its resilience. Lewiston, Maine—a city of 36,000 that feels more like a small town—is frequently described by outsiders with well-worn, vaguely disparaging adjectives. Gritty. Scrappy. Blue-collar. Down-on-its-luck. Some bristle at terms they consider put-downs of their home. But other locals, including Kristen Cloutier, a state representative who has served as Lewiston’s mayor and city councilor, embrace the idea of Lewiston and its sister city Auburn as stubborn survivors. “Scrappy and gritty are central to this place,” said Ms. Cloutier, who grew up there. “People say that Lewiston is tough as nails, and that is true.”
San Diego ranks as most expensive US city with LA and Santa Barbara in the top five (USA Today) A new report may show a new reason why California is called the Golden State. San Diego was ranked the most expensive city in the nation to live in by U.S. News and World Report’s 2023-2024 list followed by Los Angeles. The city landed that title through multiple metrics including its inflation rate and the cost of gas. The report also considered living costs from annual housing costs, median gross rent and high fees associated with homeownership. Los Angeles was ranked the second most expensive city, followed by Honolulu and Miami. California actually made up seven of the top ten spots in the report and around half of the top 25. New York City, the most populated U.S. town, earned the 11th spot.
More help arrives in Acapulco, and hurricane’s death toll rises to 39 as searchers comb debris (AP) More resources are arriving on Mexico’s battered Pacific coast, and the death toll from Hurricane Otis is growing as searchers recover more bodies from Acapulco’s harbor and under fallen trees and other storm debris. Few expect the latest mark of 39 dead to be where it stops. Hundreds of families are still awaiting word from loved ones. In Acapulco, government workers and volunteers cleared streets, gas station lines wrapped around the block for what fuel was to be had, and some lucky families found food essentials as a more organized relief operation took shape four days after the storm hit. Military personnel and volunteers worked along Acapulco’s main tourist strip. They sliced through fallen palm trees and metal signs. Cellphone signals were partially recovered near some of the most luxurious hotels, and authorities placed a charging station for people to charge their phones.
Moscow will confiscate EU assets if Brussels ‘steals’ frozen Russian funds—Putin ally (Reuters) Russia will confiscate assets belonging to European Union states it deems unfriendly if the bloc “steals” frozen Russian funds in a drive to fund Ukraine, a top ally of President Vladimir Putin said on Sunday. Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, said on Friday that the EU executive was working on a proposal to pool some of the profits derived from frozen Russian state assets to help Ukraine and its post-war reconstruction. Vyacheslav Volodin, the chairman of the State Duma, the Russian lower house of parliament, said Moscow would retaliate in a way that would be more costly to the bloc if the EU moved against Russian assets, many of which are held in Belgium.
Lebanon’s Hezbollah weighs dueling appeals: ease attacks or escalate (Washington Post) The first signs that Gaza’s war could spill deeper into Lebanon arrived quietly in the capital, Beirut. A week after the Hamas militants staged their deadly blitz inside Israel, a banner cropped up in a central Beirut: “Nothing thwarts oppression except for blood.” The message was from an armed faction allied with Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed militia that also wields significant political power in Lebanon. Even before the banner went up, shelling was being exchanged daily between Israel and armed groups in Lebanon. So far, the cross-border fire is confined to the border region. Yet in Beirut and other parts of Lebanon, there are fears that events could drag Lebanon into a wider conflict. Over the past four years, Lebanon has lurched from one crisis to the next. An economic free fall has eviscerated livelihoods and sent inflation to 350 percent on food prices early this year. Sectarian and political feuds have left Lebanon virtually rudderless with a lack of reliable state institutions and services. Hezbollah and its allies have control of parliament. After a 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah, the warnings from Israel have been stark: the next war could be even more devastating on Lebanon.
About 30 children were taken hostage by Hamas militants. Their families wait in agony (AP) Abigail Edan is just 3 years old, yet when Hamas militants stormed her kibbutz, Kfar Azza, on Oct. 7 and killed her parents, she knew enough to run to a neighbor’s for shelter. The Brodutch family—mother Hagar and her three children—took Abigail in as the rampage raged. Then all five disappeared, later confirmed by the government to be captives of Hamas, both families said, some of more than 200 people dragged to Gaza on Israel’s bloodiest day. The waking nightmare has plunged the families of the captives into a foggy limbo distinct from grieving, even as tight-knit Israel mourns the more than 1,400 people killed by militants. The families of an estimated 30 children taken hostage from Israel describe a more exquisite agony. “She’s a baby, just 3 years old, and she’s all alone,” said Abigail’s aunt, Tal Edan, in a telephone interview, her voice quivering. “Maybe she was with a neighbor, but I don’t know if they’re still together. She has no one.”
‘You Think of Dying at Any Time’ (NYT) Nayrouz Qarmout, a Palestinian author who lives in the Gaza Strip, recalled that during past wars with Israel, Gazans would feel extreme pangs of fear when they heard explosions, but afterward hope would return. Hope of cease-fires, and of life going on. But this war is different. Gaza residents say the bombs come mostly without warning and hit indiscriminately, leading to widespread hopelessness and the feeling that imminent death is inevitable. “You can’t imagine the feeling,” she said. “You are not safe. All places are targets, so you think of dying at any time.” Israeli airstrikes have pounded the enclave for three weeks in response to the Oct. 7 attack on Israel by Hamas. The Israeli military has since launched more than 7,000 airstrikes on the densely packed coastal strip, which is home to more than two million Palestinians. More than 7,700 people have been killed by the strikes, according to the Gaza health ministry, among them at least 3,195 children.
Israel strikes near Gaza’s largest hospital after accusing Hamas of using it as a base (AP) Israeli warplanes carried out airstrikes early Sunday near Gaza’s largest hospital, which is packed with patients and tens of thousands of Palestinians seeking shelter, residents said. Israel has said Gaza’s militant Hamas rulers have a command post under the hospital, without providing much evidence. In a sign of growing chaos in Gaza, the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees said thousands of people broke into its Gaza aid warehouses to take food and other “basic survival items” like hygiene products. Thomas White, the agency’s director in Gaza, said the break-in was “a worrying sign that civil order is starting to break down.” The agency, known as UNRWA, provides basic services to hundreds of thousands of people in Gaza. Its schools across the territory have been transformed into packed shelters housing Palestinians displaced by the conflict.
The World Is Becoming More African (NY) Astonishing change is underway in Africa, where the population is projected to nearly double to 2.5 billion over the next quarter-century—an era that will not only transform many African countries, experts say, but also radically reshape their relationship with the rest of the world. Birthrates are tumbling in richer nations, creating anxiety about how to care for, and pay for, their aging societies. But Africa’s baby boom continues apace, fueling the youngest, fastest growing population on earth. In 1950, Africans made up 8 percent of the world’s people. A century later, they will account for one-quarter of humanity, and at least one-third of all young people aged 15 to 24, according to United Nations forecasts. The median age on the African continent is 19. In India, the world’s most populous country, it is 28. In China and the United States, it is 38. More than a third of the world’s young people will live in Africa by 2050. The implications of this “youthquake,” as some call it, are immense yet uncertain, and likely to vary greatly across Africa, a continent of myriad cultures and some 54 countries that covers an area larger than China, Europe, India and the United States combined.
Under Antarctic ice lies a hidden landscape (The Week) Below the Antarctic ice lies an “unmodified” landscape that has been preserved “despite [millennia] of ice cover,” according to a new study published in the journal Nature Communications. The East Antarctic Ice Sheet (EAIS) covers 12,000 square miles, and frozen under the surface is a “landscape of hills and valleys carved by ancient rivers,” AFP reported. “It is an undiscovered landscape—no one’s laid eyes on it,” said Stewart Jamieson, a glaciologist at Durham University and the lead author of the study. Scientists discovered the area by using a technique called radio-echo sounding, which is when a plane flies overhead and sends radio waves into the ice to analyze the echoes. Experts posit that before it was frozen in ice, the land had a “climate similar to modern-day southern South America,” with evidence of palm trees and other tropical vegetation, ABC News reported.
Pope’s meeting on church future says it’s ‘urgent’ to guarantee governance roles for women (AP) Pope Francis’ big gathering of Catholic bishops and laypeople said Saturday it was “urgent” to guarantee fuller participation of women in church governance positions and called for research on allowing women to be deacons to be released within a year. But the meeting didn’t take decisive action on that issue. After a month of closed-door debate, Francis’ meeting on the future of the Catholic Church ended late Saturday with the approval of a 42-page text on a host of issues that will now be considered at a second session next year. None of the proposals is binding, and they are merely offered for Francis to consider. Each paragraph passed with the necessary two-thirds majority, but the ones involving women and questioning the need for priestly celibacy obtained the most “no” votes. Conservatives emphasized the need to stay true to the 2,000-year tradition of the church and warned that opening debate on such issues was a “Pandora’s Box” that risked schism.

Gee I sure do love living directly next door to a largish state college/university's campus where I regularly hear mysterious and concerning alarms going off at random at various times of the day and night. Is there a flood somewhere? a gas leak of some sort? a fire? an active shooter? a fire drill? I don't know! Sometimes it's coming from the building directly behind my apartment, sometimes it's coming from one of the ones to the left of my apartment, sometimes it's coming from all of them at once!
Sure do hope this one's not anything to worry about. and that it's one of those ones that stop shortly instead of the ones that go on for hours. I heard a fire truck siren a little while ago, but I do live right near a fire station as well, so it might not be connected to anything.
Oh, just as I was about to press post it stopped. That's nice. Just another mysterious event I'll never get an answer for. I wonder if there's a lab on the campus that has bad lab safety or something...

Hey folks, I live in Seattle and up till a couple years ago I lived on Capitol Hill. I still have friends living there. So I thought I’d provide some local insight into the CHAZ (Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone).
There is a lot of misinformation out there, especially from Fox News, which photoshopped a gunman into pics, wow.
First, the best resources to find CHAZ info are local to Seattle: The Seattle Times, Capitol Hill Blog, and the CHAZ livestream where you can see the streets for yourself.
Capitol Hill is a very densely populated neighborhood full of apartment buildings and bustling restaurants and bars. If you work there, you live there (because it is hard to navigate by car, like NYC), and if you live there, you are probably super liberal. It’s also the center of counter-culture and LGBTQ culture in Seattle.
Are the protesters terrorizing the locals?
No, the protesters ARE the locals. They live in the many, many apartment buildings on Capitol Hill. Having lived there for years, believe me when I say “fuck the police” is a prevalent opinion there even when there isn’t a nationwide protest.
Is there looting? How are businesses protecting themselves?
The businesses are not being looted; they are open and are doing a booming business. The supply chain hasn’t been broken so they aren’t running out of goods. Also, a lot of workers / business owners ARE protesters.
I saw a picture of Seattle on fire!
Actually you saw a picture of a protest in Minnesota that Fox News pretended was Seattle because they are frauds and shills.
How big is the Autonomous Zone?
Six square blocks.
How did this situation come about?
There was a peaceful march. The mayor abruptly set a 5 pm curfew. The protesters ignored it and marched anyway. Then the police set up barricades to stop the march. The cops started using tear-gas and flash-bangs and the situation devolved from there. (You can find videos of this on Capitol Hill Blog.) What prompted the tear-gas was . . . one of the protesters thrust a pink umbrella over the barrier. Yes, really.
The situation deteriorated for several days/nights running until the police abandoned the East Precinct on Capitol Hill. The violence was very one-sided: the police attacking the protesters.
Then the police left. From what I heard the mayor ordered them out due to rumors or fears that the police station would be burned down? Which didn’t happen. Anyway, they abruptly left. As in, hired a literal moving truck and emptied out their headquarters, in almost a comedic beat.
Do you have to show your ID to enter the Autonomous Zone?
No. People come and go freely.
What’s with the physical barriers then?
They’re to keep vehicles out.
Backstory: While the protests were ongoing, a guy (whose brother was an East Precinct cop) tried to ram his car into a crowd of protesters. A brave man eating a hot dog threw himself at the side of the car, grabbed the steering wheel through the open window, and stopped him. Whereupon cop-brother-car-man shot him with a gun.
Personally I think cop-brother-car-man was planning a mass shooting because he had extra ammo taped to his hoodie sleeve. You can see the blue tape on his arm in the pic above. (The man who was shot thankfully survived. Check out those brave medics tending him while an ACTIVE SHOOTER is standing feet away!)
But anyway, that’s why there are barriers. I believe they move them aside for approved vehicles, like emergency vehicles or deliveries.
Are there people with guns roaming around?
Not on a regular basis, although I’ve heard a local gun club had some members there one night when it was rumored the Proud Boys (a Nazi group) might show up. (They didn’t.) But in general, no.
Is it scary??
No. The neighborhood is fully on board and overall there is a festive atmosphere. There are speeches about BLM, about discrimination, about what people want for the neighborhood. There are first aid stations, medics and counselors, and people offering free pizza. If you watch the livestreams, you can see people walking their dogs, out with their kids, etc.
Where will this all end?
I don’t know. The barriers can’t stay up forever and I think everyone knows that. The “Autonomous Zone” name is tongue-in-cheek, the protesters aren’t actually trying to secede from the United States. The point of all this is to force the city to listen to the people in the neighborhood, to enact change. This is a boiling over of frustration. The police have never been good-faith neighbors on Capitol Hill. And Seattle police have always been pretty racist and had a problem with excessive force.
Look at this whole situation. All the police had to do was stand back and let the protesters march; they would have marched and gone home and that would be that. All the police had to do was nothing. Instead they turned a neighborhood into a warzone.
By the way, did you know that yesterday (6/12) in a different Seattle neighborhood 60,000 people marched to support BLM? And because the city had learned its lesson about dumbass curfews, they let everyone march and nothing bad happened.
Weird how the national news didn’t report on that march, huh? Almost like they cherrypick the protests that will appear “scary” to their audience.
