Gale is the friend that sends books as a presents for any holiday.

No one asked for books. No one wanted more books. He does not seem to care that you have no space for books. He just keeps sending books.

I know lots of people like to head canon Gale's family isn't actually that large, even though he says it is, because he doesn't really give off "big extended family" vibes, but consider the much more likely option: he's not very close to them.

He was scouted at 8 to be a potential Chosen for Mystra. 8 years old. Imagine how much damage that does to a child's psyche. They are expected to live up to unrealistic expectations but are also so superior at 8 that they are better than near everyone else. What cousin is gonna want to spend a holiday around the 8 year old who thinks he is sooo much better than everyone else (but then also cries when something goes wrong)? The cousin who is clearly hiding ocean-deep insecurities behind a cocky facade that never drops? Those cousins are fucking annoying.

And I imagine too that as he got older and more devoted to his studies and Msytra officially deemed him a Chosen (and then continued him grooming well beyond that), that he didn't spend much time with his family. Of course he would spend plenty of time with his mother, but his mother also didn't let him not spend time with her. Damn all the Gods if she is gonna let her kid be whisked away by some Goddess who has clearly been keeping her son under heel - not actually allowing him to grow and flourish.

I imagine now that the orb is gone, that he is no longer a Chosen, and that he may (or may not be, doesn't really matter) settling down with someone, he reconnects with his extended family. He finally sees them again after over a decade, maybe even two (he is in his forties I don't give a fuck what weird ass content said 35). He meets all his cousins' kids and partners and pets and visits all of their houses and hosts them for holidays at his tower almost every time.

(and, to be a little more sweet with it, his adventuring family also gets pulled into his bio family. Astarion, Shadowheart, and Karlach (heart got fixed no one can tell me otherwise) are permanent fixtures at family functions, even when Gale cannot attend. Halsin, Jaheira, and Minsc are not quite as permanent, though they still come regularly. Wyll and Minthara come on occasion - they're busy people after all. Lae'zel can almost never make it, for good reason, but is a big hit with all the children when she does make an appearance).

I have a personal head canon about Gale that I think will peak the interest of at least some of you.

I like to think Gale is related to Karsus. OKAY NOW HEAR ME OUT-

Narratively, its fascinating. Watching Gale fall into the same curse of ambitions as his ancestors, watching the cycle repeat all over again hundreds of years later- a connection even more facinating when you go down the God Gale route.

Also I think it goes a long way in explaining why the orb didn't just outright kill him. His magic is born of it after all. I would go so far as to even say it explains his natural skill the magic.

Also, a line just sticks out to me so hard is when he's talking to Lorroakem and says something along the lines of "I have Nethereese magic in my veins, I can become god!" Or something like that. Is he referring to the orb? Probably. Did my brain hear that and assume he was talking about super great grand pappy Karsus? Absolutely.

Also, it kinda explains why he kinda tried to hide his last name from you. He goes by Gale of waterdeep all the way until act 3 when Tara calls him out for his last name. Maybe he was scared someone would hear the name and immediately clock him as a nepo baby decentent of Magics Biggest Mistake™️

Now, do I think this is what Larien was going for? Not necessarily. Do I think that Karsus is ment to be a mirror or even foil to Gale and nothing more? Yes yes I do. Did I stretch before reaching this far? I probably should have. But, I think it's fun to think about, and it's something I've added to my Personal Gale Lore™️

ALSO EDIT TO ADD AS OTHER HAVE POINTED OUT: It makes all the more sense why Mystra took interest in him in the first place! "Oh, the direct descendent of the guy that killed my original form is turning out to be as good at magic as he is ambitious? Yeah, I should probably manipulate him into making sure that doesn't happen again"

Personal headcanons for Gale I use when writing, willing to share with others as usual. This is just a bullet point list with me throwing out some basic ideas, to maybe expand in the future.

He is around 39 years old during the game

Mystra returned to the Forgotten Realms in 1479 DR and current year is 1492 DR.

Gale would've been born around 1453 DR and then would've been around 26 when Mystra returned.

He would not start a romantic relationship with Mystra until he's around 29 years old.

He would have started under her tutelage, though, shortly after her return as he had, by that time, already learned quite a bit that he could from mortal studies.

Gale was "popular" and social due to his ability in magic and being a wizard prodigy. People hung out with him to hopefully get some of that to rub off on them and magic is how Gale knew to make connections. They all, of course, abandoned him when he fell from grace.

When he was younger and showing off/trying to impress for his "friends," he could really be insufferable.

He is a middle child, with me discussing my ideas for his siblings in this post

His father was a sorcerer, and I went a bit more into it in this first post discussing possible siblings

More to add when I decide to, of course, but this is just to give background for when I write him in my stories.

Lae'zel is pretty fluent in Common but since she still sometimes messes up some words, I don't believe she understands a third of all the big words Gale uses casually. My headcanon is that she memorizes them during the day and then goes to demand elaborations in the evening, and Gale is very happy to have someone to teach linguistics to.

By the end of the game she can call Vlaakith an pernicious, diminutive old fuck, cut to Gale in her corner wiping away a tear of pride

Some fluffy head canons I have about the Baldurs Babes

mainly at camp :)

Gale stops tav to lace their boots, sarcastically tutting as he does it.

Karlach holds her hands round someones bowl and cups to warm them if they cool down too much. (Mama K microwave™)

Jaheira and Halsin share nightcaps and chat about the tadpole team. Mainly laughing at their comparative lack of experience - always ends on a 'they're good eggs tho' vibe.

Astarion and Shadowheart rate people's hair to eachother as an injoke, tav hears them mumbling numbers behind them whenever they speak to someone.

Lae'zel asks Gale to explain and pronounce things when no one is around because the 'annoying wizard' won't make fun, he's too eager to teach.

Jaheira has the best bedtime stories but they get Karlach hyped up and she asks a lot of questions till Astarion begs her to be quiet. Wyll takes mental notes for his own storytelling.

Karlach will force a game of 'I Spy' any time there is silence on the road.

Wyll is very good at little random gifts, he just remembers anything someone mentions to him. He's also low-key emotional if you return that kindness, 'you remembered?! 😭'

Halsin stops, kneels and whispers as he points and shows tav interesting plants or animals he spots when walking. 'look there's the mother and her babies' type shit. (He is camp dad(dy) ok)

Wyll teaches Lae'zel fencing. She's too keen though and tries to pin him down. She is not as graceful... But she has fun... chk!

Gale keeps a tiny portrait of Tara on him, you can't tell me modern au Gale's phone wouldn't be full of cat pics.

Astarion watches over the camp at night, he acts like he 'might as well/ I'm the only one lurking in the dark around HERE darlings' but sometimes he secretly gets a little teary looking at his first real friends all together.

Shadowheart writes moody poetry. She would tell Gale but she doesn't care for his taste... Or his possible critiques. If he ever did find her journal though he would be VERY enthused.

Astarion and tav will play with people's wardrobes when looting. Tav loves a funny hat and Astarion will do impressions of who he thinks would wear such god's awful attire.

Gale and Wyll play chess together after dinner some nights. They both say progressively cheesy lines when they take pieces, which is its own game itself at this point.

Halsin would quietly sing or hum to owlbear baby and scratch at night. Little lullabies and he'd probably tuck them in too. OR he'd be big daddy bear and snuggle up, especially when owlbear is scared and misses his mum.

The gang have played 'never have I ever' ONE time and ONE time only. It was a messy night.

... Jaheira was 100% last man standing.

Like if Larian can give me sexy knife time with Astarion as the first meeting, give me an awkward Gale who has just fully landed on top of me, almost nose to nose, with Gale stumbling over his very eloquent words.

Lae’Zel: Flat chested, bottom heavy. She doesn’t need fucking boobs. “But what if they’re for sex purposes-“ shut up she doesn’t need boobs.

Shadowheart: Diamond shaped

Gale: Fat. “But what if he works out in his tower meh meh meh” shut up. What he does in his tower is read, feed and plays with his cat, cook a new recipe and and then realizes he has no one to share the family sized meal he made and eats it

Astarion: Skinny as a twig until you let him start drinking the blood of enemies every fight, then he plumps up just a little. It’s noticeable but it’s just a slight layer of pudge, nothing too drastic, you just can’t see his ribs anymore now that he’s freely gorging himself

Wyll: Doesn’t look like much until you see him take off his clothes. Total gunshow. Not big like Halsin but not small either. Can pick you up with one arm though. Also has a very grabable waist and the nicest butt in Baldur’s Gate.

Halsin: He’s fatjacked. Very muscular but still has a prominent belly. Like he can rip a tree stump out of the ground and his arms are huge and his pecs are toned yet still soft but you can still tell he loves his meals. His butt gives Wyll’s a run for its money.

Karlach: Absolutely jacked. Can rip a tree stump out with one arm, while carrying you in the other. Like that big bitch from Love Lies Bleeding

Taran Dekarios

(pronounced Tair-in) oldest of the 3, older than Gale by about 15 months. Storm sorcerer, roguish charm, skates through life on charisma, is allergic to reading. Is married (have fun as you will with that) but isn't against flirting as a form of getting to know people. Only one allowed to tease Gale, anyone else speaks poorly of him, Taran will make their life hell. Relationship with Gale is strained, due to mutual jealousy of each other for different reasons. His job is a mercenary, because he hates staying in one place.

Aella Dekarios

(pronounced A-Ehl-la) - youngest of the 3, younger than Gale by about 20 months. Bard, has a band with her spouse (have fun with that), very fun loving but also very blunt and straight forward, with her charisma finesse dulling the blow when she wants to. Closer to Gale than Taran, as Gale used to read to her when she was younger and going to bed. But definitely has a bit of a trickster streak to her, so she and Taran may have gotten into a few problems that Gale had to get them out of with his influence (or got into with them). She travels around and performs with her band, making a good steady pay.
