From Streets to Classrooms: A Journey of Hope with Samarpan Trust
As I was driving down the familiar dusty road towards Samarpan, the late afternoon sun cast a warm, golden glow over the village. The narrow lane, framed by modest homes and patches of wildflowers, hummed with the sounds of life—children laughing, street vendors calling out their wares, and the distant clank of pots from a nearby tea stall.
Ahead, I noticed a group of children walking in a tight-knit cluster. Their uniforms, although a little worn, were proudly worn symbols of a new chapter in their lives. These were our students from the free school run by Samarpan. With books clutched to their chests and backpacks bouncing with each step, their eyes sparkled with the joy of learning and the anticipation of the future. They waved eagerly as they recognized my car, their voices shouting greetings that carried hope and innocence.
As I slowed down to greet them, my heart swelled with pride. These were children who, not long ago, had little to look forward to but days spent wandering the streets or laboring for scraps. Now, they were students—dreamers with the promise of change in their hands.
Just as the laughter of the students faded behind me, I noticed another group moving in the opposite direction. They were younger, barefoot, and their clothes were tattered. Their eyes, dark and wary, glanced at my car for just a moment before flicking back to the ground. These were child rag pickers, their tiny hands clutching plastic bags bulging with discarded bottles, bits of paper, and whatever else they could scavenge to make a few rupees to take home.
The contrast struck me like a blow. These children, so close in age to our students, were living a starkly different reality. While our students carried books and talked about their school projects and dreams of becoming doctors, teachers, or engineers, the rag pickers carried burdens far beyond their years, dreams buried under the weight of survival.
I pulled over and watched them for a moment longer, feeling the familiar stirrings of urgency and purpose. This was why Samarpan existed—not just as a school, but as a beacon of hope, a place where childhoods were reclaimed, and dreams were born anew. Through our girls’ education program, mid-day meals, and holistic care, we were bringing children off the streets and into the fold of opportunity.
At Samarpan, we believed that education was more than learning to read or write—it was the key that unlocked potential and broke cycles of poverty. It was a shield that protected against exploitation and a guide that lit the way forward.
I turned back to see the rag pickers disappearing into the maze of alleys. There was still so much work to be done, so many lives waiting for a second chance. As I drove away, the voices of our students still rang in my ears—a song of hope that promised that, one day, no child would have to walk the streets burdened by the past. They would be walking towards a brighter future, hand-in-hand with Samarpan, as children should.

Unsung Heroes of India’s freedom struggle
India was not always Independent; our nation was once under British rule or British Raj, and not for five or six years, but for 89 years from 1858 to 1947. During their rule, our ancestors faced cruelty in the most gruesome way. They endured the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre in which, under the command of General Dyer, troops opened fire on unarmed people who were gathered during the Baisakhi fair to raise their voices against the Rowlatt Act.
