nice to read victor hugo's anti slavery stance now what sort of energy did he put into opposing french colonization in africa
#😐😐😐#unfortunately very consistent european attitude i feel where they've got an abolitionist stance in a sort of patronizing/benevolent way &#that same patronizing approach towards non white people then gets turned around to justify colonialism as ''''helping''''' & ''''''teaching#<- this sort of thing is really seeped into les mis i fear#look at the way he talks about '''civilization''' even if he's coming at it from an almost semi-socialist*** pov (i.e. spreading ideas abou#free universal education abolition of poverty and democratisation of property etc etc) - & this becomes very apparent#also this is clear from the one (1) time he mentions algeria in this book: ''algeria too harshly conquered; and as in the case of india by#the english with more barbarism than civilization''#<- now on the face of it this could look like him objecting to the colonization of algeria by the french or india by the british but with#any more than a cursory glance it becomes very clear it's not. it's very much him objecting to the methods of something he doesn't actually#see as inherently a bad thing. hugo very much thinks colonization could be a good thing if done '''properly''' in a#'''civilized''' way#he thinks there IS a way of colonizing in a '''civilized''' way that amounts to essentially ~spreading french republican ideas to the world#& is lamenting that is wasn't done with the patronising/benevolent attitude i talked about above & instead done with violence#failing (or refusing) to realize/lacknowledge that colonization is inherently an act of violence#i find these little glimpses of this really sinister tbh & it ends up tainting some of his otherwise good politics by association.#*** hugo seems to consider himself some flavor of non-marxist socialist afaict but his opinions are inconsistent#& somewhat cheapened by his occasional anti communism#thoughts#sorry to always be making these criticisms unrebloggable/in the tags but unfortunately I've spent too much time around tolkien fans.#les mis
