Get Ready to Hit Your Writing Goals in 2024
Want to start writing regularly in 2024?
A few months ago, I made this free course for writers. It's called Writing Habit for Life and helps you set up a writing habit that will fit around your lifestyle so that it's sustainable for the long term.
Just setting a goal and getting on with it works for some, but it usually isn't enough. Many abandon their plans a few weeks or months later despite their best efforts. It's a shame.
The thing is, the difference between someone completely stuck and someone making progress isn't that big. It may be just a few tweaks that will break you out of the vicious cycle. Maybe you're too distracted and need to clean up your environment a bit? Perhaps you need a little more accountability?
Small things matter because they get magnified over time. A small mistake repeated every day adds up to a serious issue.
The course covers it all, and it's completely free! You'll get a new lesson every day for two weeks. Click here to learn more.

Why Learning Python is the Perfect First Step in Coding
Learning Python is an ideal way to dive into programming. Its simplicity and versatility make it the perfect language for beginners, whether you're looking to develop basic skills or eventually dive into fields like data analysis, web development, or machine learning.
Start by focusing on the fundamentals: learn about variables, data types, conditionals, and loops. These core concepts are the building blocks of programming, and Python’s clear syntax makes them easier to grasp. Interactive platforms like Codecademy, Khan Academy, and freeCodeCamp offer structured, step-by-step lessons that are perfect for beginners, so start there.
Once you’ve got a handle on the basics, apply what you’ve learned by building small projects. For example, try coding a simple calculator, a basic guessing game, or even a text-based story generator. These small projects will help you understand how programming concepts work together, giving you confidence and helping you identify areas where you might need a bit more practice.
When you're ready to move beyond the basics, Python offers many powerful libraries that open up new possibilities. Dive into pandas for data analysis, matplotlib for data visualization, or even Django if you want to explore web development. Each library offers a set of tools that helps you do more complex tasks, and learning them will expand your coding skillset significantly.
Keep practicing, and don't hesitate to look at code written by others to see how they approach problems. Coding is a journey, and with every line you write, you’re gaining valuable skills that will pay off in future projects.

Free Course Level 1: Introductory 6 hours study Author: Elton Barker (Classical Studies Department) Extract:
Course Descriptiom
With the information explosion online, how can you tell fake news from the real thing, or be more sensitive to how information can be weaponised? In the fifth century BCE, a Greek by the name of Herodotus faced a similar challenge when he set out to examine why his people, the Greeks, and the Persians went to war with each other. Chief among his tasks was deciding what and whom to believe, as he pieced together the events of the past. His response was to produce an enquiry (in Greek: historiē, which is where the English word ‘history’ comes from). In this free course, Herodotus and the invention of history, explore how Herodotus puts together his enquiry and learn how in doing so he makes the problem of finding out what happened to our own history too.

The Mechanics of Writing Dialogue
Taught by: Tracy Gold
Start this course
One of the biggest tell-tale signs of non-professional writing is the way in which dialogue is represented on the page. Readers are used to seeing spoken words formatted in a certain way. Failure to adhere to these standards can take readers out of your story and make it hard for them to follow what's happening.
