Summer Struggle in Jingu - 8/29/2020: Title Changes, Surprises, But No G1 Climax 30 Announcements; NJPW Strong Episode 4 - 8/28/2020; RIP “Bullet” Bob Armstrong (10/3/1939 - 8/27/2020); Suzuki At BJW Last Buntai Show 8/30/2020
Tumblr media
The end show for Summer Struggle, and NJPW’s first outdoor show in 21 years, took place this morning, and you can see it now on NJPWWorld. This show had a few surprises, but it’s also what did NOT happen that’s worth discussing.
Summer Struggle in Jingu - 8/29/2020, Tokyo Meiji Jingu Stadium (NJPWWorld)
Yoshinobu Kanemaru [SZKG] d. Master Wato (Sunset Flip, 7:31)
KOPW 2020 Final 4-Way Match: Toru Yano [CHAOS] d. Kazuchika Okada [CHAOS], SANADA [Los Ingobernables] & El Desperado [SZKG] (Yano > Okada, Schoolboy, 7:01) - Yano is the inaugural KOPW 2020 Champion
NEVER Openweight Championship: Minoru Suzuki [SZKG] d. Shingo Takagi [Los Ingobernables] © (Gotch Style Piledriver, 14:56) - Takagi fails his 4th defense - Suzuki is the 30th champion
IWGP Juniorheavyweight Championship: Taiji Ishimori [Bullet Club] d. Hiromu Takahashi [Los Ingobernables] © (Yes Lock, 13:30) - Hiromu fails his 2nd defense - Ishimori is the 87th champion
IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Championship: Taichi & Zack Sabre Jr. [SZKG] © d. Hiroshi Tanahashi & Kota Ibushi (Taichi > Tanahashi, Zack Mephisto, 16:01) - Dangerous Tekkers succeed their 1st defense
IWGP Heavyweight & Intercontinental Championships: Tetsuya Naito [Los Ingobernables] d. EVIL [Bullet Club] ©© (Destino, 26:20) - EVIL fails his 2nd IWGP Heavyweight defense - Naito is the 72nd champion - EVIL fails his 2nd IWGP Intercontinental defense - Naito is the 26th champion
For a six match show, a lot was packed into it. Have to say, most of the results are surprising to me. The main event was not one of them, and good as it was, it was nice to see Naito go out with the revised Roll Call, and with fireworks in the sky seeing him out.
Golden Ace are probably done now, after they failed to regain the tag belts. Hiromu loses Belt-san, AGAIN! Suzuki beat Shingo in a banger. Yano winning the Kazuchika Okada Invitational Tournament by low-blowng Okada is hilarious. Master Wato still has quite a Way to the Grandmaster if he can’t put Kanemaru away. Suzuki-gun looks the strongest out of this show, whilst LIJ lost two belts, but regained the biggest one.
The biggest surprise from this show, was the lack of announcements for G1 Climax 30. Intermission for this show would have been the time to go ahead with those, but they did not. The upcoming New Japan Road shows don’t appear to be carried by NJPWWorld (no Korakuen Hall shows for one) so this looks to be going to a press conference coming soon. Stay tuned for that one.
Tumblr media
Last night was this week’s episode of NJPW Strong, which you can also see on NJPWWorld. THey dubbed this episode the Road to Fighting Spirit Unleashed 2020, the namesake of which seems to be the next two episodes of this Friday night TV show. Here’s the results:
Danny Limelight d. Jordan Clearwater (Symbiote DDT, 5:58)
Misterioso, Barrett Brown, Blake Christian & Adrian Quest d. TJP [FREE], ACH [FREE], Karl Fredericks & Clark Connors (Misterioso > Connors, MSO, 12:04)
Chase Owens [Bullet Club] d. PJ Black [ROH] (Package Driver, 11:10)
Next week’s episode promises Jay White v. Herb Flip Gordon, Brody King v. Hikuleo, and the NJPW debut of one Fred Rosser, the former Darren Young in WWE. On 9/11/2020, the main event will be KENTA v. Jeff Cobb for the challenge rights to the IWGP US Heavyweight title won by KENTA last week by winning the New Japan Cup USA.
Tumblr media
Tomorrow, the newly-crowned NEVER Openweight Champion Minoru Suzuki will be making his way back down to Yokohama, to face Takuya Nomura in night 2 of Big Japan Pro Wrestling’s Last Buntai event. This happens at the Yokohama Bunka Gymnasium, the site of the famous 8/8/1988 match between Tatsumi Fujinami v. Antonio Inoki that was why NJPW usually ran in Yokohama on August 8, excepting this year. It seems the Buntai will be getting torn down soon, to make way for the Yokohama United Arena, which will be opening sometime in 2024. A little sad that such an historic venue is going away, one that also hosted the volleyball events in the 1964 Summer Olympiad.

Another death in the NJPW family to announce. “Bullet” Bob Armstrong (Joseph Melton James) passed away on Thursday at the age of 80, succumbing to bone cancer. He’d had quite the career - he gained the name “Bullet” after a gimmick he was given that required him to wear a mask following an accident with a dumbbell that required $38,000 worth of plastic surgery to his face, including ripping his nose off.
He’d spent most of his career in the NWA’s southern territories, wrestling full-time from 1960 - 1988, with the 90s spent in semi-retirement, although he was a semi-regular feature in Smoky Mountain Wrestling from 1992-1995. Four of his sons also entered wrestling, in Brad, Scott, Steve and Brian, the latter being quite a part of the Attitude-era in the WWF as “Road Dogg” Jesse James.
In his gimmick as Jim Durango, he took part in the very first show for NJPW on 3/6/1972 at Tokyo Ota Ward Gymnasium, losing in a tag match with John Durango (whomever that was) against Toyonobori & Kotetsu Yamamoto. (We discussed this in Episode 3 of Strong Style History.) He would take part in the rest of this opening tour as well, including a Best Of 3 Falls match against NJPW founder Antonio Inoki. His CAGEMATCH profile only seems to list this tour, however it looks to be a bit incomplete as well, so who knows if this was his only tour of NJPW, or Japan as a whole.
Such an accomplished wrestler will be missed. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones.
The next show is a New Japan Road show on 9/3/2020, but no cards have been announced for these shows yet.

The Goal of Formal Education Has Never Been About Making Our Lives Better
“The education of the common people must instil a capacity for manual labor, simplicity in manners, docility in conduct, and acceptance of their existing social position.” (Prussian Cameralist, Jakob Friedrich Freiherr von Bielfeld, 1760)
Frederick II said that schoolmasters should be “especially careful that that common people remain attached to religion and do not steal or murder. … Otherwise, in the countryside it is enough if they learn a little reading and writing. If they learn more than this, they will flee to the cities and want to become clerks. In the countryside one must teach peasants what they need to know, but in such a manner that they will remain contentedly at their work.”
[...]
“Figures from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, for example, show that the number of students who matriculated as paupers constituted 15-25 percent of university enrollments. In the spirit of medieval caritas, poorer students generally paid no matriculation fee, while many of those too poor to afford food and lodging were accommodated in inexpensive housing and student soup kitchens (the so-called Freitische).” Pg. 115-116
[...]
This emphasis upon the economic value of primary education coincided with the vigorous promotion of child labor by Prussian and Austrian absolutism. During the eighteenth century, manufacturers and officials turned increasingly to child labor as a means of overcoming labor shortages in the textile industry. The use of child labor was justified on both economic and pedagogical grounds: It not only eased work shortages in manufacturing, but instilled a work ethic in children of those social groups customarily disposed to idleness. Frederick II expressed this view in a 1775 letter to Christoph Friedrich von Derschau, head of the provincial administration of Brandenburg:
‘For my subject to be happy, they must grow accustomed to diligence and hard work. In the Electoral Mark these virtues are particularly rare among my rural subjects. … While children of eight or nine years can do little in the way of strenuous work, they can at least spin during the evenings when they have nothing better to do. In this way they could earn their keep and grow into disciplined laborers, instead of growing accustomed from youth onwards to a life of idleness. I would view it most favorably if you would see to it that children in the countryside who are presently idle devote their free time to spinning. Our wool merchants presently complain so much about the lack of spinners: yet if these children were put to work, this shortage could be eased and our subjects could supplement their incomes.’
Maria Theresa shared Frederick’s belief in the economic and pedagogical value of child labor. In 1761 she decreed that children of the poor ‘should grow accustomed to hard work. … Our manufacturers are in great need of spinners, and they would gladly employ children for this purpose.’”
“The evolution of the Prussian and Austrian orphanage into an entrepreneurial enterprise illustrates the growing emphasis on child labor during this period. Inmates of the Halle orphanage had always spun yarn or worked at other tasks. Francke, however, had attempted to subordinate the orphans’ work regimen to their moral and religious training. He was not always successful. In 1705, a ‘strike’ occurred when orphans openly resisted attempts to increase their work quotas. Francke, embarrassed by the incident and determined to dispel any suspicion that he was exploiting his charges for profit, strictly prohibited the use of orphan labour for production beyond the needs of the institution. Although the Halle orphanage eschewed extracting ‘surplus value’ from orphan labor, its institutional offspring were not so scrupulous. In 1725, Berlin wool manufacturers contracted sixty orphans from the Potsdam military orphanage for employment as spinners. By 1740, the orphanage was regularly farming out its inmates to work in agriculture and manufacturing. By 1786, almost half of the 2,714 orphans were being used for this purpose.
[…]
The first Austrian orphanage was established in 1724 as a wing of the Vienna workhouse. […] In 1759 Ignaz Parhammer, the Jesuit confessor to Maria Theresa’s husband Franz Stephen, became director of the Rennweg orphanage. While retaining its economic function under Parhammer’s leadership, the orphanage also gained notoriety for its strict military regimen. Children wore blue uniforms, were assigned military ranks, and marched in unison to church, classes, and meals.” 131-133

A Little About Me before my current college class
My name is Richard “Kap” Kaplowitz (Kap is the nickname), age 69. I am a retired person who has become a senior student.  I do not have a full-time job in my elderhood but am very busy.  I take both 1 credit class (every semester) and am now working on my 3rd degree at FCC with this COMM class the 4th of the 6 I need to take for that degree. I earned my AA in General Studies December 2018 and my A.A.S in History Spring 2020. I also take Virtual Senior Center classes and senior adult Institute for Learning in Retirement (ILR) classes every term at FCC. Additionally, I have been working in a committed program of religious studies, classes, and seminars at the Jewish Learning Institute here at Chabad of Frederick and the Haberman Institute for Jewish Studies as well as multiple classes online from the Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning, Jewish Theological Society, Taube Center and the Streicker Center of Temple Emanu-el in NYC.  My wife says my full-time occupation is scholar, LOL!  I have taken multiple online classes at FCC, by doing credit classes online it frees up my time for other learning and all of my political work.
I refereed youth and high school soccer for 31 years retiring in December 2019 due to bad knees.  I represent multiple companies as a mystery shopper.  My son is recovering from a massive stroke in a local nursing home. My best friend lives in Emmitsburg and neither of them drive.  I take my friend to and from his doctor appointments. My wife and I (2nd marriage for both of us) have been married for 14 years. As busy as I am online and politically (in multiple training classes and work as a political organizer now) I am husband to a wonderful woman who I try and spend quality time with. There is no one I would rather be social distancing with! The sole good outcome of the pandemic is the discovery of how much we need and love each other and spending time together.
I should also note that I am a trained communicator having earned Advanced Communicator Silver level with Toastmasters International. I am been a member of Frederick Toastmasters for over 20 years and have spoken before groups of over 500 at a time.  I am an accomplished reader who can read any text blind with expressive feeling.
I am the secretary for Frederick Progressives, a chapter of Progressive Maryland. I am the District Captain for Jews United for Justice. I am a member of the Steering Committee for Our Revolution Western Maryland. I participate in multiple issue task forces on local county, Maryland state and Federal issues. I am also a volunteer for multiple state and local candidates in their races for 2022.
I am a progressive political activist (VOTE!!!) working to support progressive policies and candidates with membership in over one dozen different organizations.  IF YOU ARE NOT REGISTERED voterizer.org or need to check your status or make any changes let me know and I can help you to check your registration, change name or address or political party or cisgendered designation, verify that you are registered, help you vote by mail and TELL YOU WHY YOU MUST!!! VOTE IN EVERY ELECTION!!
I believe you should be a lifelong student.  I will take every class that interests me at FCC and elsewhere.  I am happy to be a member of this class!
