â... The Kwakiutl First Nation has a long history of hereditary governance shaped by matriarchal lines, and rooted in an ongoing potlatch tradition, where every family clan and its line of descendents has a head Chief. It also has a band council administration established by the Indian Act which is elected by the community. Knox says recent tensions around old growth point to the importance of respecting hereditary jurisdiction.âThe government divided us with the Indian Act,â he said. âBack in the day when we all shared the resources, we had our own laws.â...â
â... Last November when the logging was still active, the Kwakwa̱ka̱âwakw Hereditary Chiefs Confederation issued a cease-and-desist order addressed to Lemare Lake Loggingâs CEO, Eric Dutcyvich, Western Forest Products and the Kwakiutl band council.
If you do not cease the aforementioned activity legal counsel will be secured to uphold our laws against you,â the letter read in part.
Two days later, the band council responded with legal notice written by Rory Morahan of Morahan & Company law offices, stating that the order was invalid and that âthe elected Chief and council have the sole authority and jurisdiction, on behalf of the Kwakiutl band council, to consider resource extraction within the traditional territories and the lands described in the Douglas Treaty.â...â

"In a historic âfirst-of-its-kindâ agreement the government of British Colombia has acknowledged the aboriginal ownership of 200 islands off the west coast of Canada.
The owners are the Haida nation, and rather than the Canadian government giving something to a First Nation, the agreement admits that the âXhaaidlagha Gwaayaaiâ or the âislands at the end of world,â always belonged to them, a subtle yet powerful difference in the wording of First Nations negotiating.
BC Premier David Eby called the treaty âlong overdueâ and once signed, will clear the way for half a million hectares (1.3 million acres) of land to be managed by the Haida.
Postal service, shipping lanes, school and community services, private property rights, and local government jurisdiction, will all be unaffected by the agreement, which will essentially outline that the Haida decide what to do with the 200 or so islands and islets.
âWe could be facing each other in a courtroom, we could have been fighting each other for years and years, but we chose a different path,â said Minister of Indigenous Relations of BC, Murray Rankin at the signing ceremony, who added that it took creativity and courage to âcreate a better world for our children.â
Indeed, making the agreement outside the courts of the formal treaty process reflects a vastly different way of negotiating than has been the norm for Canada.
âThis agreement wonât only raise all boats here on Haida Gwaii â increase opportunity and prosperity for the Haida people and for the whole community and for the whole province â but it will also be an example and another way for nations â not just in British Columbia, but right across Canada â to have their title recognized,â said Eby.
In other words, by deciding this outside court, Eby and the province of BC hope to set a new standard for how such land title agreements are struck."

Please boost at least and if you can donate that would be great. They need to stay on their land, not hand it over to the fossil fuel industry.

National and NZ First have said they'll only support this Bill to first reading (thankfully) but there is always the chance of closed door promises & favours and we still need to advocate for this disgusting bill to die.
I'll post more about submissions when they open for Select Committee but I'm happy to help answer questions or help with that and the process.
But the racist idiots to email and drill in that you DO NOT want this Bill are...

"The Anicinabe Park Occupation" began in mid-July 1974.. and lasted until late August, approximately, 39 days. For a month, armed Ojibway militants (mostly youth) occupied a 14âacre park in the resort town of Kenora, in northwestern Ontario, to call attention to longâstanding grievances against the white authorities. The embattled Ojibway in Kenora Park, led by 24âyearâold Louis Cameron, the head of the militant Ojibway Warriors Society, marked the new phase of their campaign, by "destroying a collection of fire-bombs, in a clearing. They then placed eight rifles and handguns, on a blanket and turned them over to Mayor James Davidson of Kenora, at the barricaded entrance to the park. In return, the 80 young Indigenous people were given a city permit, to spend 10 days more in the park. The Ojibway People say, that the park is Indigenous land, that was sold "illegally" to the city of Kenora, by the Department of Indian Affairs, in 1959. They also demanded social reforms for some 7,000 Indians, most of them impoverished, in Kenora and in nearby reserves.

The U.S. government will invest $240 million in salmon and steelhead hatcheries in the Pacific Northwest to boost declining fish populations and support the treaty-protected fishing rights of Native American tribes, officials announced Thursday.
The departments of Commerce and the Interior said there will be an initial $54 million for hatchery maintenance and modernization made available to 27 tribes in the region, which includes Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Alaska.

Good News - July 8-14
Like these weekly compilations? Tip me at $Kaybarr1735! And if you tip me and give me a way to contact you, at the end of the month I'll send you a link to all of the articles I found but didn't use each week!
1. Zoo welcomes birth of four endangered horse foals
â[The Marwell Zoo in GB] said it was "delighted" to welcome the arrivals to the endangered Przewalskiâs horse herd. All four are female and said to be "doing well" after two were born in May and two in June. [âŠ] âThese horses, that were previously listed extinct in the wild, are an example of how zoo breeding programmes can help restore threatened species around the world.â [âŠ] All the Przewalskiâs horses alive today are descended from just 12 individuals. Current estimates suggest there are 178 mature individuals living in the wild.â
2. Restoring woodlands and planting trees for sustainability success
âIn 2023, [the Marwell Zoo] planted 9,000 new trees [âŠ] both within the zoo and on our surrounding land. [âŠ] Marwell tries to encourage natural feeding behaviour and nutrition by including leafy material [in animalsâ feed] as much as possible. [âŠ] Planting more trees and enhancing management of our existing woodlands, prepares the way to further self-sufficiency in browse production in the future. Plus, it creates new habitats for wildlife in our woodland areas.â
3. Inclusive Playgrounds Allow Children Of All Abilities To Play
âWith ramps allowing children in wheelchairs to ascend the central play structure, as well as numerous other swings and apparatus usable for children of all abilities, the 16,000-square-foot P.K.âs Place is St. Paulâs first fully inclusive playground. [âŠ] To be universally accessible, a play area must have at least 70% of its play features fully accessible, far more than required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). [âŠ] Play areas should allow parents and grandparents with disabilities to participate as well.â
4. Combination treatment can increase human insulin-producing cells in vivo
â[Diabetes-model mice] were treated with the combination therapy [of a plant product called harmine and âa widely used class of type 2 diabetes therapyâ] and their diabetes was rapidly reversed. Strikingly, human beta cell numbers increased by 700 percent over three months with this drug combination. "This is the first time scientists have developed a drug treatment that is proven to increase adult human beta cell numbers in vivo. This research brings hope for the use of future regenerative therapies to potentially treat the hundreds of millions of people with diabetes," said Dr. Garcia-Ocaña, the paper's corresponding author.â
5. Decades of Dedication: Australiaâs Largest Ongoing Urban Restoration Project
â[Friends of Lake Claremont] has transformed the area into a thriving ecosystem, re-establishing native habitats and fostering biodiversity. This year, 800 native seedlings (100 trees, 350 shrubs and 350 ground covers) have been planted on the northwestern buffer of Lake Claremont. Volunteers replaced a large Port Jackson fig (Ficus rubiginosa) affected by [beetle] infestation with native plants to enhance the local wildlife habitat, thereby benefiting insects, frogs, birds and brown bandicoots. [âŠ] Overall, the project contributes to the areaâs function as a regional ecological corridor, linking inland bushlands, the Swan River and the Indian Ocean.â
6. Important habitat for fish in Heart of the Fraser now conserved
âBritish Columbiaâs iconic salmon now have more protected spawning habitat in the lower Fraser River, thanks to the Nature Conservancy of Canadaâs (NCCâs) conservation acquisition of Carey Island. [âŠ] Carey Island and its gravel channels offer calm and crucial spawning and rearing habitat for the riverâs fish and aquatic species. [âŠ] The PelĂłlxw Tribe [âŠis also] actively working to restore the resilience of aquatic habitat within this stretch of the Lower Fraser. NCC is exploring opportunities to collaborate with the PelĂłlxw Tribe in support of their vision for stewardship of the area, which prioritizes both ecological and cultural values.â
7. Prime editing efficiently corrects cystic fibrosis mutation in human lung cells
â[R]esearchers have developed a gene-editing approach that efficiently corrects the most common mutation that causes cystic fibrosis, found in 85 percent of patients. With further development, it could pave the way for treatments that are administered only once and have fewer side effects. The new method precisely and durably corrects the mutation in human lung cells, restoring cell function to levels similar to that of Trikafta [the standard treatment since 2019].â
8. Montanaâs High Court Considers a Constitutional Right to a Stable Climate
âAt issue was the appeal of a decision last year, when a Montana judge blocked a state law that prohibited agencies from considering climate impacts when deciding whether to approve fossil fuel projects such as new power plants, pipelines or mining. The ruling, by District Judge Kathy Seeley, was prompted by a lawsuit filed by 16 youths who argued that the law violated Montanaâs constitutional right to a âclean and healthful environment.â It was the first ruling in the United States to effectively establish constitutional rights to a stable climate[âŠ.]â
9. The US is about to get its first solar-covered canal
âThe first canal-based solar project in the U.S. is nearing completion on tribal lands south of Phoenix, Arizona. [âŠ] The long, narrow solar array design would snake along the line of the canal and tap into the local electrical distribution grid every 1,000 feet, or every one megawatt. [âŠ] âCanal solar allows for greater power production per land size, cleaner water, less power transmission losses, and significant reduction in evaporation[âŠ.]â Covering the entire 8,000 miles of canals and waterways managed by the Bureau of Reclamation with solar panels could generate over 25 gigawatts of renewable energy and reduce water evaporation by tens of billions of gallons[âŠ.]â
10. Camera traps offer glimpse of first beaver born in Northumberland for 400 years
â"Itâs such a relief that they have bred successfully and to see a new fluffy kit swimming with the family[âŠ.]â In just one year [since releasing the beavers], there has been a noticeable increase in resident trout, says the National Trust, along with more regular visits from kingfishers and grey herons. There are more insects at the site, too, thanks to the organic matter that builds up behind the dams, which in turn provides food for Daubentonâs bats. [âŠ] Beavers also play an important role in creating habitats that are more resilient to the effects of climate change[âŠ.]â

"In an open-air courtroom set up in a nature reserve in Western NSW, a four-nation clan has secured one of the largest native title claims in the region's history.Â
Far from the four walls and formalities of a federal courtroom, Justice Melissa Perry delivered her determination at Newey Reserve in Cobar on Wednesday, recognising the native title rights of the Ngemba, Ngiyampaa, Wangaaypuwan and Wayilwan peoples.
The decision marks the successful end of a 12-year legal battle that began in 2012.
The claim covers more than 95,000 square kilometres of land and water from the Barwon River in the north, to the Lachlan River in the south, the Castlereagh River in the east and Ivanhoe to the west.Â
It recognises native title rights including the right to hunt, fish and gather resources, the right to access and camp on land and right to protect places of cultural and spiritual importance.
A legacy for future custodiansÂ
Aunty Elaine Ohlsen, a Ngiyampaa Elder from Cobar and one of the original applicants, said the decision brought her "mixed emotions".
"I just persevered," she said.
"We've been through a lot of trials and tribulations to get here, but I'm someone who won't give up fighting for our people."
"These sorts of things need to happen all the time, because we need to know who we are and where we come from and where we are in this country."
Aunty Elaine hopes the determination will inspire future generations to continue their ancestors' legacy.
"Hopefully, this will encourage them to stay connected to their country, heritage, and culture, and to carry on the hard work we've done," she said.
Vision for the future
Wangaaypuwan man and claim applicant John Shipp recently camped on country with four generations of his family.
He said the recognition of native title meant they could continue to do so without fear of being moved on.
"It's just those little things that give us our connection back to our land, our heritage, our culture," he said.
The native title holders have now formed the Ngemba, Ngiyampaa, Wangaaypuwan Wayilwan Aboriginal Corporation (NNWW Corporation) to manage their rights.
As a director of the NNWW Corporation, Mr Shipp sees the determination as the beginning of a new chapter...
As for Mr Shipp's message to other Indigenous groups fighting for recognition?
"Keep going â it's getting better, it's getting shorter, it's happening, just keep going," he said."

British Columbia saw a rare unanimous vote in its legislature in October 2019, when members passed a law adopting the United Nations Declarations on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, setting out standards including free, prior and informed consent for actions affecting them. The law âfundamentally changed the relationshipâ between First Nations and the province, said Terry Teegee, regional chief of the B.C. Assembly of First Nations. [...] John Rustad threw his support behind the legislation as a member of the Official Opposition B.C. Liberal Party, but as the B.C. Conservative leader he has since signalled his intention to ârepealâ the law if his party wins the Oct. 19 provincial election.
