The Best News of Last Week - September 11, 2023
Sorry for not sending last week's issue as I got covid again :/ I passed it, so here's the best things that happened last week :)
1. The IRS plans to crack down on 1,600 millionaires to collect millions of dollars in back taxes
The IRS announced on Friday it is launching an effort to aggressively pursue 1,600 millionaires and 75 large business partnerships that owe hundreds of millions of dollars in past due taxes. The newly announced tax collection effort will begin as soon as October. “We have more hiring to do,” Werfel said. “It’s going to be a very busy fall for us.”
2. The NGO African Parks announced it would purchase the world’s largest population of privately owned white rhinos
Africa’s beleaguered rhinos have been thrown a significant lifeline with the announcement that nearly 2,000 semi-wild rhinos owned by South African rhino breeder John Hume will be “rewilded” into reserves across South Africa and other parts of the continent over the next 10 years.
3. Mexico supreme court decriminalizes abortion across country
Mexico’s supreme court has unanimously ruled that state laws prohibiting abortion are unconstitutional and violate women’s rights, in the latest in a series of victories for reproductive rights activists across Latin America.
Wednesday’s ruling came two years after the court ordered the northern state of Coahuila to remove sanctions for abortion from its criminal code, a decision which prompted a tortuous state-by-state process of legal battles. So far 12 of Mexico’s 31 states have decriminalized the procedure.
4. The first human organ created inside an animal opens the door to manufacturing ‘spare parts’ for people
It is a historic image. A team of researchers in China has successfully generated a blueprint of a human organ in another animal for the first time. The experiment, conducted with humanized kidneys in pig embryos, represents a step toward the still-distant dream of using other mammals as source of organs for transplants.
5. Study Shows a Single Dose of Psilocybin's Astonishing Impact on Depression and Could Change Medical Treatments of Mental Health Forever
Psychedelics are making a comeback, and this time, they're dressed in the respectable garb of clinical research. Recent studies have reignited interest in these substances, particularly psilocybin, the active compound in magic mushrooms, as a potent treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD).
6. Missing cat reunited with owner after it disappeared during Alaska flooding
Twenty-six days after he went missing, an adorable black and white cat named Leo has been reunited with his family. Brave Leo went missing after historic glacial flooding swept away his home and all his owner's belongings.
7. Dogs perform Mozart with orchestra in Denmark
youtube
A classical music festival in Copenhagen, Denmark, has opened with some canine additions to the orchestra.

NikPrice, who fell first and who fell harder? How do you imagine they got together.. Who swallowed their courage and took the first step.. How'd the confession go... Did they get together when they were young or was it full on yearning till they were older? Ahhh! So many ways to go at it. I like how they're flexible. Curious about your version of them. (or have you already written about it and I missed it? I'm sorry..) Young sweethearts is cute...but i do love old men yearning...hehehe
Ahh, so I've imagined it a hundred different ways. I've chosen a particular angle for Skin and Bones because it's not only a "getting together" fic but also a "John Price does some healing" fic.
They first met when John was a lieutenant. He was the one that "brought Nik in" when Nik was stationed at the London embassy. Spies had been unsuccessful in Copenhagen because he had a deep distrust of them (linked to his experience of his father and the KGB), so he says he will talk to someone like him. A soldier.
I think Nik falls in love quickly, but he's happy to like... marinate in it because he also has a lot of healing to do in the beginning (and empire building). I headcanon him as a gay man pretty consistently, and I think he's used to pining after men he can't have. He's done it for years. It's like one of the many romances he read as a boy, he figures.
Through the years, Nik shows his affection in small ways, like he's the one who yanks that filthy roll up out of Price's mouth and replaces it with a cigar, and always ensures Price has what he needs when he's called upon. Nik's there when Price gets his captaincy, they get drunk and... Ahh, they might have kissed. Price runs the fuck away like a coward.
Price is in denial. He apologises in the morning and Nik can see the terror in his eyes of what he'd just done, so, even though his heart is aching, Nik tells Price not to worry about it. The captain isn't ready to heal that part of himself yet.
More time passes, and John realises he's very much in love with Nik. It hits him like a freight train one night when Nik's joking around in the bar with the rest of 141. Just how he feels watching them, watching Nik.
So what does John do? He destroys it, of course. Because the only thing more destructive than John Price's anger is John Price's fear. There's like... More after, but I should probably finish the damn thing for you.
Happy ending, kissing, tender sex, Oop, some therapy.
Nik waits a long time for the man he loves to realise they're in love, while battling his own demons. That's the angle I'm going for in that fic, anyways. Because I love healing heartbreak.

It's all in the side notes
I can’t believe why is not painfully obvious for everybody else too, it's like everyone notices everything around it except this huge elephant in the Sydcarmy room.
Let me explain:
The side notes on the script are what the actors play, not just the script itself. The subtexts, the nuances, the silences, all of that is indicated by the director and rehearsed over and over before shooting at least 2 takes of every single scene.
02X01 was about teamwork towards The Bear's opening, that's why the director opened and closed the ep with that, to make that point. The side notes were all about playing every single scene with a SOU, fast-paced dialogues, etc, because every second counts and that's why a clock was ticking on pretty much every scene.
When 02x02 ends with a close-up of Claire smiling after Carmy gives her the wrong number, that´s not the point the director tried to make, but that Carmy TOOK HIS FUCKING TIME in giving her the wrong number, he almost gave it to her in slow motion, meaning that as he was giving it to her he was deciding what he eventually ended up doing with the last digit. He was on the fence the whole time and ended up deciding to "cut her off politely" in a very Carmy way. That was a side note in the script (the speech rate and the "decide as you go", and "be doubtful first" part).
In 02x03, the Sydcarmy vs Clairmy battle really began and it continued throughout the whole S2, all side notes because the script was barely obvious about Claire until he said: "I have to call my GF" after passing the gas inspection. Notice a pattern here? Or is it just me?
02X04 was mostly focused on Marcus in Copenhagen and introduced us to Chef Luca, raising the question, on purpose leaving it as an unanswered question - that will probably be answered in S3- on whether Luca was talking about Carmy when he was talking about a chef that was way better than him and that inspired him to become the chef he is today and up his game as much as he could. In other words: Not Sydcarmy material. Except we buy into the whole SydMarcus shipping they tried to insinuate with the Facetime call, which I won't get into because I feel dirty even typing about it. How dare they? Is it because they are both black? WTF?!! Well, my point is this is probably the least Sydcarmy episode of the season and we need to make a mental note about who directed it.
02x05 This episode's arc is all about the script's side notes: "Who's Claire? / I'm saying goodnight!" is all about the intonation, not the actual words. This is the bridge of the whole Sydcarmy song, that's why it's mid-season. Notice something? I have...
02x06 The masterpiece, it's all about the side notes but again, super non Sydcarmy, it's just supposed to show us The Berzatto's background story so Syd is not part of the equation. Claire is, in a way that will later make a lot more sense during Omelette's panic attack, of course.
02x07 AKA: My favest, is also a non-Sydcarmy kinda ep. Is all about Cousin's arc. BTW: I 100% ship these 2 and I hope S3 brings more RichJess fluff and stuff:
02X08 is all about the side notes again and takes us right back into SydCarmy vs Clairmy territory. Carmy had to call his new GF after passing the inspection to give her the good news.
02x09 I shouldn't even have to say a damn thing about this ep. Other than pointing out the obvious: IT'S THE MOST SYDCARMY EP OF THE WHOLE FUCKING SEASON, TYVM!
All I'm gonna add is that Carmy is laying awake after having sex with her:
I already talked about the common blue light in this scene here.
I'm not even gonna get into his panic attack. I mean... Do I have to? Seriously?
Anyway...
Storer finally joined the ship Calo was sailing since the beginning of the season here and all the side notes in this script are HIS.
The cinematography is his, the music is his, and every line, because he co-wrote it with Sydcarmy CEO: Joanna Calo herself.
And so we arrive to 02X10 where Sydcarmy is eaten alive by The Bear but ironically enough the one who doesn't survive is the Clairmy team LMAO! Sydcarmy on the other hand keeps going strong (Ayo was promoted to co-star for a reason, she's no longer part of the cast, she's the female lead of the show now) and in S3 we'll get to see how exactly will that play out.
My point is: The director and then the editors in the ER with the EP's sign-off can change what the writers write if they choose to and the actors have to perform the side notes according to the director's instructions.
In this case, since Storer joined the Calo Sydcarmy ship as I previously mentioned and usually they co-write and always co-produce the seasons those scripts, side notes, musicalizations and editions ARE ALL THEIRS. Every time Calo touches something, she turns it into Sydcarmy gold, and Storer and her are on the same page. That's why most Sydcarmy eps of the season were hers or his or directed by both.
June can't get here soon enough.

On April 14th 1578 James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell , Earl of Orkney and third husband of Mary Queen of Scots died, aged 44, tied to a post in a dungeon at, Denmark.
Bothwell fled Scotland after the surrender at Carberry Hill, Queen Mary’s last act of love for him was guaranteeing he could leave the area unharmed.
Bothwell took ship from Aberdeen to Shetland, he may have stopped off in Orkney, the only thing we know is he was denied refuge there and travelled on to Shetland.
He was pursued by Sir William Kirkcaldy of Grange and William Murray of Tullibardine who it seems were not that far behind him. They sailed into Bressay Sound near Lerwick. Four of Bothwell’s ships in the Sound set sail north to Unst where Hepburn and his cousin, the pirate, Olaf Sinclair were negotiating with German captains to hire more ships. Kirkcaldy’s flagship The Lion, chased one of Bothwell’s ships, and both ships were damaged on a submerged rock.
Bothwell sent his treasure ship to Scalloway and fought a three-hour-long sea battle off the Port of Unst where the mast of one of his ships was shot away. During the chase a storm erupted and Bothwell’s superior seamanship to come to his rescue. After transferring his men to his two remaining ships, he sailed south-east before the wind, making the 250-mile crossing in record time Although Kirkcaldy followed for sixty miles, he was out-sailed and, by his own admission, was ‘no good seaman’.
He might have thought he was off the hook again, but no, Frederick II was not sympathetic to his cause, he was at war, and was torn between his blood ties to Mary Queen of Scots and the need to show loyalty to his Protestant allies. Fortunately for him, the problem solved itself when Mary, held prisoner in England, dissolved her marriage to Bothwell, making him merely a problem to be got rid of from Frederik’s perspective, so he ordered his arrest to be used as a bargaining chip in the forlorn hope that he would be traded in return for the return of the Northern Isle!
After being brought before the Bergen magistrates, in September he was carried to Copenhagen on one of Frederick’s ships for ‘honourable confinement’ at Dragshorn Castle, the Scandinavian equivalent of the Tower Of London. I found an extract from My Heart is My Own, a biography on Mary Queen of Scots that reads
“On 14th April 1578, Bothwell died at Dragsholm. As was customary for state prisoners, his body was carried to the promontory that juts into the fjord a side of things. mile or so from the castle and buried at the parish church of Fårevejle. (…) “
There are differing versions on how he lived out his last days, one says he was actually not held in ‘honourable confinement’, but in a small dungeon chained to a post, the cell so small he was unable to stand, the second is more in the line of the ‘honourable confinement’ that he spent the last years drinking to excess with others held at the castle and gradually became more and more insane.
John Maxwell, visited Dragshorn Castle, and reported that Hepburn had latterly become overgrown with hair and filth. I take it from this he was still alive at the time!
The story doesn’t quite end there, Bothwell’s coffin was opened for the first time in 1868 and a very well-preserved body was found, which subsequently rapidly decayed and, for a period of time, until 1973, was open to public viewing under a glass lid. Then, in response to a request from the descendants of the Hepburn family, the newly-crowned Margrethe II had Bothwell buried in a zinc-lined coffin within a sarcophagus of oak, and here he remains.
Every now and then there is a story in the press about his descendents making an attempt for his body to be repatriated, I have no idea why the Danes would not allow this and for the moment he remains there. Of course with a story like this the castle is said to be haunted by the "good” Earl, where is he said to ride through the courtyard with a full horse and carriage.
The pictures are, the supposed head of Bothwell “ Study of Mummified Head” by Danish artist Otto Bache. The even more gruesome “body of James Hepburn” although the church where his supposed remains lie was known to have exhibited several bodies over the years as his, therefore, it is impossible to know if this is actually him.
There have been moves by his descendants to have his body repatriated through the years Speaking in 2010 Sir Alastair Buchan-Hepburn, Bothwell's direct descendant sought to raise funds to lobby the Scottish and Danish governments, saying "I want the Scottish culture minister to get in touch with his Danish counterpart to ask him 'would you please consider to return the body of James Hepburn, the Earl of Bothwell?'"
James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwells’ remains are now kept in the crypt at the church at Faravejle, near Dragsholm Castle, as seen in the last pic, up until the 21st century his coffin was open, with a glass covering his body.

Carl Bloch’s lost masterpiece Prometheus Unbound finds fame again in Athens
Work that made its creator a superstar then mysteriously disappeared is mesmerising art lovers once more
It was commissioned in 1864, by King George I of Greece, made its creator a superstar and in his native Denmark attracted crowds like no other painting before. Then it mysteriously disappeared.
Now, nearly nine decades after it was last seen gracing the stairwell of the royal palace that would become the Athens parliament, Carl Bloch’s masterpiece, Prometheus Unbound, has found fame again in Greece.
“Its appeal has been astounding,” said Nikolas Papadimitriou, the director of the Paul and Alexandra Canellopoulos Museum beneath the Acropolis. “People stand before it transfixed. They’re completely mesmerised.”
On public display for the first time in the country, the painting has for months been attracting visitors who are spurred as much by the prospect of seeing a long-lost cultural treasure as hunger, perhaps, for a glimpse of freedom’s victory over oppression.
The painting’s popularity has been such that plans are now afoot to exhibit it elsewhere in Greece before the culture ministry, which has declared the work a protected monument, puts it on permanent display at the newly restored palace of Tatoi, north of the capital, later this year.

“At the age of 87 I don’t think I’ve seen anything like it,” said Dimitris Mavrikas, a retired merchant who had travelled from Agrinio in central Greece to see the work. “For me it’s all about the battle of human existence, the battle we wage to survive from the moment we are born.”
In an increasingly insecure world, it was, he said, a battle freighted with significance. “Who can dispute the fact that people have always been fighting for their liberty?” he said. “I’d heard so much about this painting and it hasn’t let me down. It provokes awe.”
At four meters high and three meters wide, the magisterial piece depicts the moment Prometheus breaks free from the chains that have bound him to a rock, the punishment Zeus has bestowed on the titan for daring to gift mankind the power of fire.
Condemned to have his liver pecked by an eagle in perpetuity – with the king god ensuring the organ is constantly renewed for the bird to feast on – Bloch evokes the drama of Prometheus’s liberation after Heracles’ unexpected intervention. He looks on incredulously as his tormentor falls from his body.
Papadimitriou said the painting’s allure could also be attributed to “its sheer size, in a country where we’ve never had big buildings to hang such pieces”.
Schoolchildren have visited the museum to take in the floor-to-ceiling treasure “and the reaction was always the same”, he said. “They stood there in silence, in total amazement.”
Known for his depictions of mythological heroes, Bloch was commissioned in 1864 by the young Danish-born king George I, who had assumed Greece’s throne the year before. Ensconced in his studio in Rome as revolutionary fervour spread, the artist worked furiously to finish the painting. When it was first exhibited in Copenhagen in 1865, Prometheus Unbound was hailed as groundbreaking and an unprecedented success.
“It would be right to say that it would be difficult to find its equal anywhere since the very beginnings of Danish art,” one critic opined.
But, for many, the power of the painting also lies in its extraordinary history. Its chance rediscovery in 2012 not only ended decades of speculation but resolved a thriller that had long haunted the art world.

Culture ministry officials in Greece were stunned when they came across the canvas rolled up in a tube while recording thousands of objects amassed in Tatoi from estates that had once belonged to the nation’s deposed royal family.
Last seen publicly at an exhibition in Copenhagen in 1932, historians surmised it had either been lost as it was transported by ship back to Greece or had fallen victim to fire. That looters had failed to spot the treasure – the royal estates had been frequently targeted by thieves – only added to the astonishment.
“It needed work,” said Melina Fotopoulou, the Greek culture ministry conservationist who oversaw its restoration. “In places there was mould, cracks and colour detachment that required restoration and as it had been rolled up for so long in the cylinder, the canvas was quite loose.”
The painstaking conservation work was made harder because of the painting’s size. “It was impossible to restore mounted on a frame and so was laid out on the ground where we worked on it intensely,” Fotopoulou said, adding there had been “quite a bit of nervousness” before the masterpiece was rehung. “We weren’t at all sure what it would look like framed but of course it is so impressive; it’s wonderful.”

Naval Surgeon's medicine chest, belonging to surgeon Sir Benjamin F. Outram (1774-1856) and reputedly used at the battle of Copenhagen 1801
Outram was first employed in the naval medical service in 1794, and was promoted to the rank of surgeon in 1796. He served in HMS Harpy, HMS La Nymphe, and HMS Boadicea. He was surgeon in HMS Superb in the second battle of Algeciras, where Sir James Saumarez obtained a victory over the French and Spanish fleets on 12 July 1801. He received war medals and clasps for his services under Sir Richard Goodwin Keats. Then for a period he was surgeon to the royal yacht, HMS Royal Sovereign.
In 1806, with a view to private practice, Outram went to Edinburgh, and there graduated doctor of medicine on 24 June 1809. He was admitted a licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians of London on 16 April 1810, and then began as a physician at Hanover Square in London, where he lived more than 40 years. He acted as physician to the Welbeck Street Dispensary. On 3 May 1838 he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society; he also became an early member of the Royal Geographical Society.
In 1841 Outram became medical inspector of her Majesty's fleets and hospitals. He was appointed Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB) on 17 September 1850, and was admitted a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians on 9 July 1852. He died at Brighton on 16 February 1856, and was buried at Clifton, Bristol.

JAPAN TRIP - DAY 1
My trip got off to a terrible start as I woke up feeling extremely unwell. I'm battling with fluctuating fever, which is making things quite challenging. Currently, I'm feeling somewhat improved, but not completely recovered 😕 With approximately 8 hours left on the flight, I hope that getting some sleep will help me feel better, ah.
The first picture on the left captures the beginning of my journey, the first flight from Copenhagen to Helsinki. As I boarded the plane, excitement and anticipation filled the air. The window seat (which I hate!) allowed me to gaze out at the vast expanse of clouds, marveling at the beauty of the sky. The second picture, the one on the right depicts the second leg of my adventure, the flight from Helsinki to Narita Airport in Tokyo (the flight is still in progress)

With a historic mandate secured, here’s some bold ideas for the incoming president’s tenure:
Make American defense great again
The military and the Department of Defense have many issues. Here are a few big ones:
The bidding process is uncompetitive.Defense industry behemoths, such as Raytheon, Boeing, etc aren’t innovating as much as they should be, and there is no room for smaller players to enter into the industry without first having pledged fealty to the defense contractor industrial complex. To resolve this, Trump II should consider opening up the Pentagon-contractor relationship to many more patriotic endeavors.
The DOD is attached to old ideas and outdated platforms. For example, the Pentagon’s insistence that America retains manned fighter jet platforms well into the future. That will leave the United States at a competitive disadvantage when squaring off against Chinese platforms. Instead of investing in expiring ideas, they should instead deploy those resources into UAV, jamming, and counter-jamming technologies.
Thanks to the efforts of Democrat administrations, so much of the military has been allocated to appealing to hyper wokeness. The military shouldn’t be understood as a social welfare program. It should be purposed to defend the country and achieve victory in battle. All of the trans/DEI/ESG stuff is harming military readiness, and it’s sabotaging recruiting. It all needs to go, as soon as humanly possible.
Annex Greenland
Yes, the Trump Administration should absolutely try to find a way to annex Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark.
Greenland is insanely resource-rich and its geopolitical position is incredibly significant to American interests.
Denmark is hyper-liberal and wants to preserve Greenland, cutting the territory off from most human contact (other than the 50,000 or so people who live there) because they have bought into all of the climate narrative hysteria, so they’re just letting perfectly good (but very cold) land waste away.
The Trump Administration should reach out to Copenhagen and start the process of negotiations over the future of Greenland. They can start by leveraging Denmark’s failure to live up to the two-percent defense spending threshold as a NATO member.

Introductions, PSA's, Other Blogs, and Posts Lists.
Hi! I'm Hopster, and welcome to my blog! this is just where i post most of my chaos, which just so happens to be Napoleonic stuff right now.
PSA's
These past few days I have been flooded with asks asking about monetary help for medication, war aid, etc. I have gotten three today alone, and it’s not even 2pm for me.
I want my ask box open for folks, but it’s tempting to close it because of this. I don’t want modern politics on my blog, nor do I have the money to help. So please stop.
That being said, if your ask has anything regarding the asking of money or modern politics (2000-present) it will automatically be deleted and you will be blocked.
And just in case someone wants to start calling me things I’m not, I just want to keep modern politics off my blog. I am surrounded by that shit every day, especially with my situation. This is my safe space where I talk about silly and historical stuff.
----------------
If you are searching for something on my blog: the main for of organization on here is by name, contents, era- and if its in a project of mine- project name.
for example, if you are looking for Napoleon, search napoleon bonaparte. if you are looking for art of napoleon, then it will fall under napoleon bonaparte and art. if youare looking for artwork of Napoleon that is in my From the archives project, then It will fall under Napoleon Bonaparte, Art, and DK archive project.
if it isn't there, then i either haven't reblogged it, or it hasnt been tagged yet.

The Battle of Copenhagen of 1801 (Danish: Slaget på Reden), also known as the First Battle of Copenhagen to distinguish it from the Second Battle of Copenhagen in 1807, was a naval battle in which a British fleet fought and defeated a smaller force of the Dano-Norwegian Navy anchored near Copenhagen on April 2, 1801.

Do you have a favourite ship? The floating sort, not the romantic one.
By God, there is such a thing as "A Romantic Ship" nowadays? I should inform Captain Hardy, he might appreciate such news and even I find the concept truly intriguing. I only wonder what utility might such a vessel possess in the heat of battle?
My favourite ship was and will be HMS Agamemnon, a Third Rate, where I held command for three years during my operations in the Mediterranean Sea. There, I earned my first Flag Officer rank promotion and she followed me to Copenhagen and Trafalgar too.
I heard she wrecked four years after I did, which is unfortunate.

The little Apartment
Rafael is happy with his life. He has a steady job at Tivoli Gardens, a small apartment near the outskirts of Copenhagen, and he has finally got custody for his Daughter. For an Autumn event, the amusement park expects a high number of visitors and then suddenly a man in a Suit stands in front of Rafael , who seems way too familiar to him.
".... you have no idea what you are getting yourself into, Rafael! You are not good enough for my Daughter! The poor girl will not have a good future with you! She must come Home with me! He is a Criminal and can't take good care of a teenager! Why doesn't anyone understand this?! "
Rafael put a reassuring hand on his daughter's shoulder , as they both left the courtroom, accompanied by the Lawyer. The angry accusations from the girl's mother echoed down the high walls of the Courtroom, making the angry woman appear even more cynical and irrational.
Even during the Trial, she had repeatedly interrupted the opposing lawyer and stressed that her girl could not have a good future with a man like Rafael.
With the point , that Rafael had a secret past as a criminal, the woman had hit the bull's eye - but nobody knew anything about that.
Rafael had put that part of his past in a box and locked that box away tightly. At that time he was still known by a different name and had helped a master thief and successfully carry out some spectacular thefts in Europe without getting caught.
And then the Moment came, when one of these thefts threatened to go wrong. He actually wanted to announce the good news to his Boss , that he was going to have a baby with his (current ex-girlfriend) and that he wanted to buy a small house in Amsterdam with the money from the Theft.
But Rafael never had the opportunity to do so. The police had been after them and his boss had knocked him unconscious ´for his own protection´ and dumped him in a wooded area in the country like an annoying pet.
Without explanation, without saying goodbye - just with a note with the words ´Go north and ask for Olga at the old watermill´ - it was damned complicated and after Once back in civilization, the drama about his girlfriend at the time and the baby had begun.
This resulted in a legal battle that dragged on for years - and now - today - Rafael finally had full custody for his 15 year old daughter.
"I got you an annual pass for the Park, so you can come by after school if you like", said Rafael lovingly and the angry words of the girl's mother finally stopped , as the doors to the courtroom closed behind the trio.
The lawyer also said a few words of encouragement and then said goodbye at the Exit. Father and daughter stayed behind. The girl looked at Rafael and her gaze was so much fear, tiredness and insecurity - the years and the manipulation by her mother had not left the girl without a trace or pain.
"I love you Dad ... and I'm happy to be with you," breathed the Girl and pulled Rafael into an unexpected hug.
The burden of years of negotiations finally fell off their shoulders and now a new, better life would begin for father and daughter.
"But I warn you - my apartment is a bit chaotic. The craftsmen have laid some new tiles and old Miss Fitzpatrick from the fourth floor, has already announced that she wants to bring us some homemade cookies", added Rafael and listened the girl laughed softly before breaking free of the embrace.
"Let's go home. Now everything will be better for us Carolina"
And Rafael was right. In the coming weeks, father and daughter had time to get used to the new circumstances, the new everyday life and the construction sites that Carolina's mother had left with the teenager.
The girl was very introverted and whenever Rafael cursed or got louder, she immediately looked for a place to hide, almost like a frightened animal.
In the first weeks of living together , there were many tears, fits of anger, misunderstandings - but also hugs, promises and conversations over hot chocolate pudding with marshmallows and chocolate sprinkles.
Carolina went to the international School in Copenhagen , because she had lived with her mother in Brighton for the past few years and had grown up with English.
The School was only a 15-minute walk from the apartment and his daughter seemed to enjoy her Time there - the more time passed, the more she could recover and find her way out of her little safety shell.
The two became a well-coordinated team and the small apartment was filled with life again.
Rafael went on about his job as a sound engineer at the amusement park and made a living for Carolina and himself.
He had told neither his work colleagues nor his daughter about the fact, that thanks to his father he would never have to work again and like a certain cartoon duck swam in money.
It was a chapter in Rafael's life , that he thought closed. He was happy with his current life, with his work and the newfound trust and relationship with his daughter. And the upcoming autumn festival at Tivoli Amusement Park & Tivoli Gardens, was a wonderful event that he hoped to spend with the teenager.
***
"Daddy? Are you awake?"
Grumbling and tired, Rafael opened his eyes, his hand looked for his glasses on the little table next to his bed and when he found them, he saw Carolina standing next to his bed and playing uncertainly with the sleeve of her pajamas.
The somewhat decrepit ceiling lamp flickered sometimes more, sometimes less well and a thunderstorm had arisen outside and a bright flash of lightning lit up the bedroom and tears could be seen on Carolina's face.
What happened? Usually the girl wasn't afraid of thunderstorms, Rafael had caught her last time standing on the little balcony, fascinated, and paying her attention to the spectacle of the weather.
"What happened Mi cielito? Can't you go to sleep because of the Thunderstorm?", Rafael sat up tiredly in his bed and his curls looked even more messy than in general, but he didn't want to see his daughter sad or scared.
"I had a nightmare ... about mom and grandma ... they ... they wanted to take me away from you and bring me back to Brighton ... Daddy, I was so scared ... I don't want to leave you .... I .... I have .... ", Carolina's gaze slid to the floor and she broke her sentence.
One look at her pajama pants told Rafael , what she had wanted to say and the former thief climbed slowly out of bed and pulled her into a soothing hug.
"Everything is fine Mi cielito. Nobody will take you away from me and the other problem... we will solve okay very quickly? Don't cry, my darling, I will not let anything happen to you", Rafael mumbled reassuringly . Accidents happen and that was out of fear and panic about the nightmare.
Carolina had already told him , how terrified she was that her British mother and British grandmother might show up here and take the girl back to Brighton.
Rafael had never got on well with his mother-in-law and he had a ... rather tense relationship with his own mother since back in Time robberies with his father.
Rafael's mother wanted nothing to do with her grandchild and the other grandmother was just as unbearable as Carolina's mother. But Rafael was serious about his promise, that he would not let anything happen to the girl.
"Lia? I have full custody for you and your mother can't do anything about that, we will both wake up early tomorrow, make a delicious breakfast and in the afternoon we will enjoy the autumn festival in Tivoli Gardens together, okay? Our lives will not be shaken by anything or change just because tomorrow is another day", Rafael promised the sobbing girl and the crying slowly stopped.
After a while, the blonde stepped away from her father, sniffed once, and gratitude and trust were reflected in her eyes.
"Come on, let's take care of the other problem and then go back to sleep, okay? You have to go to school tomorrow and I have to go to work" - and so Rafael put a hand on his daughter's shoulder and then led her back in the bedroom.
Rafael didn't mention , that he wanted to go back to sleep after she had woken him up in the middle of the night.
This girl had been through so much and he wanted to offer her the safe place , that he had never had at her age.
Of course his father had been there ... but even he was before Rafael's little career as a thief, a rather seldom seen guest in his home, after both of Rafaels Parents filed for divorce.
Maybe Rafael would have had a few more hours of sleep before starting his work in Tivoli Park.
***
"Damn Settings! Really boss, how come you press a button and your magical sound engineering skills , seem to please the system - we're really happy to have you as the head of the sound engineering department"
The pat on the back of his work colleague , elicited a short smile from Rafael before he said goodbye and chose the path from the main part of the park , over to the Tivoli Gardens.
His working day had been long and the autumn festival had drawn many visitors to the amusement park, there were the park's mascots in autumn costumes and local Danish food at various Places. The decoration was also kept in autumnal tones and the sun shone warming from the sky. It was a lovely afternoon.
He was proud and happy to have such a great managerial position and to pass on his knowledge of the complicated areas of sound engineering.
Rafael passed his locker on the way to Tivoli Gardens and took out his large round headphones, slung them around his neck, and slipped into his casual shoes. Rafael took another cap out of the locker, put it on and took out the rucksack, which contained both a small picnic and his aparment door keys. Then the sound engineer continued on his way and went to the agreed meeting point that he had arranged with Carolina.
Rafael stopped and waited near the Ferris wheel in a park with seating spots. The 15th year old must have already been in the park and on the way here.
He had bought her an annual pass because Carolina loved to walk through the beautiful park or to go to the less extreme carousels and take a break here, when school was over.
"You feel powerful don't you Hijo?"
Rafael looked up in surprise and disbelief , when he heard that all too familiar voice. It couldn't be, could it? The adult couldn't believe his eyes and doubted the effectiveness of his glasses - but his father was standing a few meters away from him.
Dressed in a suit and with a noble hat on his head, he smiled at him and opened his arms for a hug.
Rafael couldn't help but be happy and grinning in return.
All the pain and anger about the then separate ways and the ´exposure in the wilderness´ were suddenly forgotten. His father actually stood before him. Andrés de Fonollosa actually stood in front of him - for the first time in almost 15 years, Rafael saw his father again. What a big surprise.
"Papá ..... what are you doing here?", Rafael found his voice again after both of them broke away from the embrace and his father was still grinning at him.
Somehow the master thief in his suit looked out of place at Tivoli Gardens.
"I was in the area and heard that the Tivoli Park had a new talented head of the sound engineering department. It could only be you and if Copenhagen is known for one thing, it is the Tivoli theme Park", replied the master thief in one a tone, that justified all explanations for his arrival and presence here.
Rafael had many questions, he had followed how his father had turned bigger things, after the last theft together and at some point went into hiding.
The police couldn't find him and maybe that was better that way.
Out of the corner of his eye, Rafael suddenly saw Carolina walking towards the meeting point , with two ice cream cones in hand, followed by a cheeky little squirrel that kept making it clear , how much it wanted to have something to eat, but the blonde-haired glasses wearer was full focusing on the path and keeping her balance.
Shortly before the goal, however, the squirrel ran so suddenly in front of her feet and climbed up Carolina's right leg that the teenager stumbled, tripped over her own feet and fell.
The squirrel ran away with some of the broken ice cream cones and seemed happy that it had now got hold of a snack.
"Everything is okay - that was a really clever squirrel, but I think the other ice cream cone is no longer useful as a Snack", Carolina called to her father, got up again and looked at the second broken ice cream cone, which was now covered by small stones and dirt .
The girl then ran up to her father and only noticed a few moments later , the strange man in the suit there as well.
And one thought immediately occurred to the Girl. The man was definitely her mother and grandmother's lawyer, and he wanted to negotiate with her father or scare him.
"Come on, let's go somewhere else, yes? Then the mean Lawyer can no longer scare you", said Carolina and wanted to pull Rafael by the hand away from the man in the suit. With little success.
"That is not necessary, the man is ...", Rafael wanted to assure the teenager that the stranger was not a lawyer , who threatened him, but his daughter interrupted him.
"... mean and you don't even have to talk to him. Surely mom and grandmother sent him. Let's have a picnic somewhere else? Far from the lawyer?", Carolina repeated her question and this time the ´ responded big evil Lawyer´ with an amused, slightly derogatory laugh.
"No even ten horses would have moved me into study law. Who is this young Lady Rafael?", said the man in the suit and Carolina let go of her father's hand in confusion.
How did the strange man know her father's first name? That was strange and weird.
"The man is not a Lawyer, you don't have to be afraid. And this is Carolina ...", Rafael managed and now he got two questioning looks from father and daughter.
"Carolina, the man is my father and your Grandfather," added Rafael and at least made Carolina speechless. Andrés seemed to think it was a joke that his son tried to practice sarcasm.
"You should work on your jokes, do I look like someone who could already be a Grandfather?", Andrés joked and Rafael couldn't blame him, he had never had the opportunity to tell his father about the existence of his granddaughter tell.
"Maybe he's an undercover lawyer? Daddy - what did you bring along for the picnic?", whispered Carolina now and the girl was generally easily distracted and satisfied with food.
"Lia, I wasn't kidding, and Papá my sarcasm works great. How about we continue the conversation in my apartment and have the picnic there? Then no cheeky squirrels can try to make you stumble again Mi cielito?" , suggested Rafael and put a hand on Carolina's shoulder.
The girl eyed the strange man uncertainly and anxiously was able to read through the glasses of her, the green eyes of the teenager flashed uncertainly, before she looked back at Rafael. And finally Carolina nodded tentatively.
"Can we go to the roller coaster ´The Mine´ before we go Home? This time I also will try to go in - alone", asked Carolina and while the trio made their way to the exit, Rafael felt his father's sidelong glances at him.
And Rafael was unable to tell , whether Andrés de Fonollosa was amused or angry about this surprise.
***
A little later the three were sitting in the small living room, Carolina had spread a picnic blanket on the floor and a coffee machine was rattling in the kitchen.
The situation was strange and on the one hand the young Girl, did not feel comfortable having this strange adult in her little safe Place- on the other hand she was perhaps a little bit curious , whether the man in the suit could really be her Abuelo.
"Oh we don't have any cookies for the picnic Daddy. I think Miss Fitzpatrick baked some for us yesterday, but didn't bring them up here. I'll see if she's home" - and so she jumped up on her feet and ran out of the apartment, presumably to avoid the situation and the weird mood in the living Room.
"This is really a surprise, and I actually wanted to surprise you with this Visit Rafael. But that can wait. Even if Martin will kill me for making the way to Copenhagen in the first place. He thinks you are a coward who is stuck in a boring Life", smiled Andrés and the name Martin said something to Rafael.
Before things went downhill, his father had mentioned the man several times, but Rafael had never met this Martin.
"So do you believe me? Or do you want to see her birth certificate or the judicial verdict?", Rafael inquired skeptically, he knew how much his father put on evidence of the truth, especially when it came to adding to the family. Or the sudden fact that he's a grandfather. For about 15 years now. Such a thing is not easy for anyone to believe or to realize.
"That would make things a little more believable. It reminds me of you in your youth. You were similar, intimidated and scared - but full of intelligence. Understand my suspicions, but some of my ex-wives , have tried the same and I just want to be sure" - was the master thief's answer.
Of course he wanted that and during Carolina's absence Rafael got the necessary papers and his father could convince himself that he was telling the truth. Then Rafael also explained to his father, that he had never got in touch or tried to get in touch because he had to settle the drama about Carolina's mother and their mother and wanted to turn his back on the criminal path and start a new life.
And Andrés understood the reasons, didn't blame Rafael for anything and five minutes later poured himself a cup of coffee in the Kitchen.
"It's an interesting surprise, but really Rafael - I've never felt so alive - the thought of suddenly being the Grandfather of a 15-year-old Teenager would have taken anyone by surprise. But that opens up a new possibility´s. You know ... I think I'll stay a few days in Copenhagen. Then we can discuss my ´surprise´ ... nah, it's more of a suggestion for ... let's call it ... an idea like we plannend many years ago, " said Andrés in a mysterious tone and then took a sip of his coffee.
Before Rafael could reply, the apartment door could be heard slamming shut and Carolina appeared in the kitchen with a plate full of biscuits and other delicious Danish pastries.
"If ... you want some, you should take the Vaniljekranse ...?" - Carolina shyly held out the plate of biscuits to the other Adult and avoided eye contact.
She was very shy of strangers and took a while to get along with them. A large part of the blame lay with her mother and grandmother and Rafael did not push the girl in a direction she did not want to go ... but with his own father he was... unsure right now whether the older adult might not react roughly or insensitively.
But the master thief surprised Rafael.
"Oh the famous Vaniljekranse - people talked about them even in Italy. And how about if you call me Andrés for the Start Carolina? We can still argue about the Abuelo at a later Point, hm?"
And so Andrés was planning, to find a hotel room in the city center that same evening, because after the much more relaxed picnic in the living room, on a huge fluffy blanket, he found out that the small apartment near the outskirts, unfortunately did not have a Guest room - but Rafael and Carolina are happy , to spend the next few days with him and get to know him a little better.

Showery. Ship visited by Lady Franklin (and other Ladies) the wife of Governor Sir J Franklin.
Campbell's Notes: Sir John Franklin (1786–1847) joined the Navy in 1800 and saw service at the battle of Copenhagen (1801). He sailed in Investigator with Matthew Flinders for the survey of New Holland (Australia) and on the way home in Porpoise was wrecked on the coral reef near Cato Bank. He was in Bellerophon at Trafalgar (1805) before being confirmed Lieutenant 11 February 1808. In command of the hired brig Trent he accompanied Captain Buchan, HMS Dorothea on a voyage of exploration in the vicinity of Spitsbergen. Thereafter he undertook two expeditions overland, the first to locate the position of the mouth of the Coppermine River and survey the northern coast of Canada in its vicinity, and the second in 1825 to cooperate with Captains Beechey and Parry in a search for the north-west passage. He was promoted Captain on 20 November 1822 on his return from the first expedition and Knighted after the second. He was appointed Lieutenant Governor of Van Dieman’s Land, January 1837 and held the post until November 1843. His attempts to establish a representative assembly and improve social and educational facilities were unpopular with the Government from whose point of view his governorship was at best unsuccessful and at worst disastrous. He was however popular among the colonists, both settlers and convicts, for his sense of justice and compassion. He ended his life, 11 June 1847, in command of the Erebus, with Captain Crozier in the Terror, in an other attempt to find the north-west passage (which sailed in 1845), before the ships were abandoned on 22 April 1848. On April 14th 1578 James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell , Earl of Orkney and third husband of Mary Queen of Scots died, aged 44, tied to a post in a dungeon at, Denmark.
As I posted on Friday Bothwell fled Scotland after the surrender at Carberry Hill, Queen Mary’s last act of love for him was guaranteeing he could leave the area unharmed.
James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwells’ remains are now kept in the crypt at the church at Faravejle, near Dragsholm Castle, as seen in the last pic.
