Why almost every big social media site is from the US?

I'm aware that mourning an app is pathetic in a situation where people's lives are endangered with a certain orange man becoming the president again, but I'm genuinely worried how US centric social media is limiting the freedom of speech everywhere outside the States as well.

In this screenshot that has made rounds around the web today, we see the differences in an app that isn't own by an US company.

We can see that the censorship only affects those who are from the US in TikTok. But that's not the case with the dumpsterfire app Twitter, and that is not the case with Instagram either.

Today, many Finnish (and others as well) leftist people and politicians have noticed how political content has been hidden. Tags such as #theleft, #democrat, #kamalaharris and #leftist has been hidden or made unusable. This post is from a member of the Finnish Left group:

I've also been made aware that they have banned tags like #conservative as well, but not #republican and certainly not #donaldtrump.

Unlike in Tiktok, the political propaganda of Trump and his crew affects the entire world.

And I'm truly saddened to see if Instagram becomes unusable just like Twitter. I don't want to see leftist accounts being banned or restricted. We need social media apps that aren't US made. Europe should step up. I'm tired of the whole online world being the United fascist States of America.

i know its not the point of the post but holy shit i've been wondering for so long why i can never relate to other lesbians talking about being terrified and disgusted when they found out they were gay and it taking many years for them to accept it

Being raised culturally christian protestant atheist is funny, actually. I was never taught that Hell is literally real or that I should believe in it, or that you go there for being gay. I was told that I'm free to do whatever I want with my life, for as long as I'm doing something constructive and working hard to achieve it. Wanting to suck dick isn't a sin, but wanting to do fuck all sure is one.

I never had to cope with some traumatic realisation that homosexuality is an inherent part of who I am that no amount of repression, prayer or conversion therapy could make it go away. I'm just sitting here contemplating the idea that maybe I never have been and never will be a hardworking, career-driven, passionate and ambituous Dedicated To Their Life's Work kind of a person.

I don't believe in Hell but I'm still convinced I'll go there if all I want to do with my life is to stare at walls.

Propaganda: To quote wikipedia: "The procession passes through a recognisable landscape, that of Eläintarha, Helsinki, with Töölönlahti Bay in the background.[6]" First of all I love when a place is depicted in a way that it is very regonicable for people familar with it, this realness of space gives such personal context. But to quote further "In Hugo Simberg's time, the park was a popular spot for leisure-time activities among the working classes. At the time, many charity institutions were located in Eläintarha park; in The Wounded Angel, the healthy boys are carrying the injured girl towards the Blind Girls' School and the Home for Cripples [sic]." I think both the disability and the working class aspect are very interesting - like look at the boys clothes (the boots of one of them and the ill fitting suit of the other) I do not know what could hurt an angel, but two very ordinary children, are taking care of them, and that touches me.

Description: A mostly yellow painting shows three skeletons, clad in black robes, tending to a garden. The skeleton closest to the viewer is watering the plants; the skeleton in the middle of the painting hugs a flower to its chest; the last skeleton is turned away from the viewer.

Propaganda: I love this painting. It's one of my favourite art pieces ever, and I adore it for much the same reason I love the Deaths from Discworld and Sandman. The Garden of Death personifies death not as something scary, but as gentle, peaceful, nurturing.

Propaganda 3: It look so incredible tender and warm, with the golden light that is most of the art (beside the white bones and black robes), I specially love the skeleton holding (hugging!) the blue flower. There is also a fresco version in the Tampere Cathedral, which is a less bright golden color and more muted with more contrast with the green grass in the background.

This is going to be such a nothing post to anyone who doesn't live in Finland, but I was just reading about Pekka Puupää, a Finnish comic strip character from the early 20th century who was spun off into an improbable amount of comedy movies in a very short span of time (13 movies in the space of 7 years holy shit), and okay first of all the films apparently share very little continuity with the comic strip and also the comic strips were originally basically propaganda for the nascent retail co-operative movement in Finland. And I genuinely don't know what to do with this information.

About five years ago there used to be some dude in my hometown who consistently kept putting up nazi propaganda stickers, so I made it my job to take them down. It was a hobby for a while, I'd take long walks, with a scraper in my backpack, and kept an eye on every trash can, streetlamp, and wall that accumulated stickers, learning to spot these specific stickers. I even went to their website (which is still up, apparently, but I'm not guiding traffic their way) to see if they had any logos that I would have missed.

This one time I was scraping one sticker off a lamp post - one of their big standard ones, with a fist punching a star of david and the text "against zionism!" - this white guy who wasn't finnish actually walked up to me, and asked in awkward english what exactly I'm doing. And I explained I'm removing these fucking stickers that some other guy keeps putting up. I've never seen the guy but I hate seeing his shit, and I've heard it through the grapevine that he's sworn to kill the guy who keeps taking his stickers down.

He asked me if I knew what zionism is, and to be entirely perfectly honest, no I did not. So he started telling me about all the things that are wrong in the state of Israel, and how being against zionism isn't automatically antisemitism, and I can't just assume that anyone criticising Israel or zionism is a nazi. The semantics of propaganda are insidious and it's easy to be led astray.

I let him talk for long enough to understand what he wanted to say and to believe that he really meant what he was saying. Once we had established that, I told him that while he may know more about the situation in Israel than I do, I know more about my own people than he does. And the finnish national socialists who use this logo right here do not give a shit about the people of Palestine. I'm not taking these things down because I'd think Israel should be an ethnostate. I'm taking them down because I think Finland should not be one.
