Was thinking thoughts about how I understand characters who lose their minds and then attempt to bring back their dead loved ones (i am being extremely normal in my grieving process, leave me alone) so i decided to rewatch the Astro boy movie and bawled my eyes out.

I remember this movie being good from when i was a kid but wow i didn’t remember it being this good.

The cinematography blew me away and i took tons of screenshots that I would like to make studies of later. The writing is so well done. A really solid mix of good social commentary and humor. It feels like they didnt pull their punches with certain lines and were looking at the audience like ‘yeah you heard us.’ The pacing is perfect; every section is exactly as long as it needs to be and nothing feels brushed past. The characters are all fleshed out, even the background characters, and you can really understand their motivations and emotions. This movie does an amazing job with animating micro expressions which is always one of my favorite things to see in a movie. The designs are perfect from the backgrounds to the characters. The voice acting represents every character well, even Dr. Tenma who i initially thought was too unemotive, but that suits him as a neglectful father who has a wake-up call.

The happy ending and catharsis is exactly what i needed right now and the small cliffhanger lets you imagine what happens next and keeps the universe alive in your mind. I love the communist robots, the commentary on slavery, consciousness, morality, violence, state control, death, kindness, belonging, class difference, how politicians keep power, and our treatment of the environment through our mindset of wastefulness and disposability.

Anyways, this is definitely going up there as one of my favorite movies, and I’m always glad to see that my child self had taste! I’m tempted to just restart the movie even though it just ended haha

When he explains that there was no one else around, Flora's eyes widen as she glances around the area. It was true that the area was vacant but Flora just figured the other person ran off instead of trying to save her - they seemed like they were in a rush. So it was strange to her that he said he hadn't seen anyone else around and the fact he said he'd been watching the fish for a while - she didn't recognize him before she fell in. Looking back up at him, she opens her mouth to speak.

"A-Are you sure no one else was here?" It all had happened so fast before she knew it, but surely she wasn't that disoriented to get the details wrong. But after he mentions where she was staying, she nods her head, "I-I was visiting for a nearby festival and decided to come to the temple. I wanted to see everything this town had to offer..."

Clutching at the jacket with her hand, she carefully pulls herself up with the other on trembling legs. Hopefully, she'd have enough strength to get back. Flashing him a weak smile, she decides to introduce herself, as well.

"T-Thank you for saving me, Mister Yoshitsugu. My name is Flora Alexandria."

Strong arms wrap around her frail body and she is finally pulled out of the water. Her lungs burn as air reaches them again but the persons voice draws her back out of her shocked state. Harsh coughs wreck her whole body as her fists cling to his clothes. Slowly she starts to calm down with the realization that she is okay and the comfort from the person who saved her. Blue orbs crack open as she looks up at him, mouth opening to speak but her voice is rough from having been under the water.

“T-Thank you.. I-I was knocked into the water when someone ran by. I don’t know if they noticed.” Her wet clothes cling to her skin and the air around her sends a shiver down her spine. The water was cool so the air makes her skin feel like pinpricks. Finally her eyes properly adjust as she looks up at his face then she looks down at the uniform he is wearing.

“A-Are you a soldier? I’m so sorry for getting you wet.” She moves a little to try and not get anymore water on him but not enough to knock her over since she is still weak from nearly drowning.

Gently rubbing her back as she finishing spitting out the water in her mouth, he took off his mildly damp military jacket and draped it over her with a faint smile. He had no idea how to reassure her, and her clothes were strange to him. It resembled nothing Otani had ever seen before. 

“No need to apologize, but there is no one else here…” Otani murmured, looking at the empty temple. As far as he could remember, no one ran by the pond. “I’ve been watching the fish for a while now, I would hope I would have noticed.” 

Standing up, he held out his hand to offer her assistance. As confused as he felt, he imagined she likely had it worse. 

“Are you a foreigner, miss? Is there somewhere you’re staying?”

Given her situation, he couldn’t very well leave her on her own. He felt obligated to at least walk her back to her residence or buy her some tea to warm her up. Only then did it dawn on him that he failed to introduce himself. Not wanting to be rude, he decided to give her his name and official confirmation that yes, he was a soldier.

“My name is Otani Yoshitsugu, I am a soldier in the Imperial Army’s 1st Division.”
