On this day of remembrance for Ukraine's defenders, French reporter Emmanuelle Chaze reminds us of the human toll due to the West enabling Russia.
---
Tumblr media
On the Field of Mars in Lviv, more graves appear each day. They are tended to daily & deep into the night by grieving families. None of that had to happen to Ukraine, had Ru not been enabled by the West.
Tumblr media
On one of the most recent graves,@/sasha_weirdsley told me a woman came every day to mourn her son. She comes with a mat to spend time with him. In the sand, she wrote "любимо", "we love (you)".
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her son's name is Pavlo-Nikita Skachkov, he was born in 1997 and died on July 31st, 2024, defending Ukraine with the 24th mechanized brigade named after King Danylo. He will forever be 27.
Tumblr media
Thousands of Ukrainian soldiers died defending their country, our democracies, Europe. They were someone's child, someone's sibling, someone's lover. They were loved and their loss is irreplaceable.
Tumblr media
Those thousands of Fallen sacrificed their lives for an interest they placed above their own. They will never get to see Ukraine freed of Ru agression. If you are asking yourself what you would have done during World War II, you are exactly doing it right now.

Martian Auroras
Tumblr media
Auroras happen when energetic particles -- usually from the solar wind -- interact with the atmosphere. Here on Earth, they're most often found near the poles, where our strong global magnetic field converges, funneling particles down from space. Our neighbor Mars has no global magnetic field.  (Image credit: UAE Space Agency/EMM/EMUS and NASA/MAVEN/IUVS; via Physics Today) Read the full article

I did it!! First pixel art peice ever!
I’m not sure if I entirely nailed the FoM pixel art style but and I definitely did take my own creative l liberties (as I always do) but I’m still pretty proud of it!! :)

Phoenix! On-and-off member of the EEG field team. A self-employed mechanic and electrician otherwise (and local dilf)
-> Until recently Phoenix wasn’t a super official nor consistent member of the team. He maintains that he’s not one of The Scientists, he’s a maintenance guy and an outdoorsman and he’s good for lugging supplies around the strange alien wilderness. In recent years though he’s around a lot more often and participates in most expeditions. Can’t hurt to have more eyes looking out for them.
-> As a teen, Phoenix pursued sciences in school, taking some of the same classes as friends like Tune and Odyssey, but Phoenix ended up dropping out when he couldn’t keep up with the work. It stung at the time and they have a tendency to discredit their own intelligence as a result, but despite this they’re content with the path their life’s taken.
-> Generally a casual and laidback kinda guy. One of the only folks on the team who has a healthy relationship with their emotions. Dude knows how to cope. that one post like ‘dude i’m emotionally vulnerable as shit i’ll cry on any of you’ that’s Phoenix-core.
-> He enjoys the fruits of hard work as much as anybody else but he’s a big advocate for the importance of rest and leisure. Can’t be giving it 100% all of the time or you won’t have anything left to give. You gotta find time to take it easy and enjoy where you’re at.
-> Phoenix looooves camping and outdoor recreation. They try to rope their friends and family into joining him out in the wilderness a couple times a year. The normal wilderness, working in the Otherworld doesn’t count.
-> While he’s not one to butt in on other people’s problems uninvited, he’s always got advice on hand if asked. Sure, some of it’s bullshit. It can’t all be gold.
-> Phoenix has been broken up with an unfortunate number of times. Amicable breakups, no hard feelings, but man this guy is unlucky with his romantic endeavours. Two of his coworkers are past exes (but remain good friends with him thankfully).
-> Phoenix an uncle to Maven and Perseverance, through being friends with their parents rather than blood relation. Perse in particular he was able to spend a lot of time with through her childhood and the two are very close. She takes after him in regards to extroverted personalities and enjoying physical activities like hiking and sports. They’ve got a good understanding of each other and a very playful relationship. There’s more distance between Maven and Phoenix, but they still have a good relationship. Phoenix is less sure of how to interact with them, how to tell when Maven just needs a little prompting to get outside their comfort zone and build confidence vs when Maven really does not want to be involved and just wants time alone. Phoenix is just trying to do right by the both of them.

Cloud atlas of Mars showcases array of atmospheric phenomena
Tumblr media
(This image displays two atmospheric phenomena: the white curved lines are gravity wave clouds, while the brown areas are dust lifted from the ground by wind. The color shift visible in the dust lifting event might be indicative of very fast winds, a phenomenon currently under investigation by other members of the team. Credit: ESA/DLR/FU Berlin.)
"Cloud enthusiasts have a new tool to investigate striking formations in the skies above the red planet. A browsable database of 20-years-worth of images of clouds and storms, created by the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) in Berlin, is helping scientists better understand how and where features arise in the Martian atmosphere and what they can tell us about the climate of Mars and other planets.
The Mars 'Cloud Atlas', which is available to the public, has been presented this week at the Europlanet Science Congress (EPSC) 2024 in Berlin by Daniela Tirsch of DLR.

The images in the Cloud Atlas have been captured by the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) instrument, which has been in orbit on board the European Space Agency (ESA) Mars Express spacecraft since 2005. Although Mars has a very thin atmosphere, numerous cloud formations and dust storm phenomena can develop from water and carbon dioxide ice crystals as well as dust particles.
"Clouds on Mars are just as diverse and fascinating as those we see in our skies on Earth, with some features unique to the red planet. One of my favorite phenomena are the beautiful 'cloud streets'—linear rows of fleecy clouds that develop around the huge volcanic Tharsis rise and the northern lowlands in northern spring and summer. While they resemble cumulus clouds on Earth, they are formed under different atmospheric conditions," said Dr. Tirsch. "We also see impressive dust clouds that can spread hundreds of kilometers—a phenomenon we luckily don't experience on Earth."

I just realised why Camp Jupiter is seperate from New Rome. It's for training. It's so they get attacked. It's to keep them vigilant. Camp Half-Blood is a safe haven where you learn to fight. Camp Jupiter is getting thrown into the gladiator pit and being told to literally "conquer or die". They aren't supposed to be safe. They're suppose to fight for their lives for ten years straight and then they've proved themselves good enough to be safe.

The Unusual Auroras of Mars
Tumblr media
Earth, Saturn, and Jupiter have auroras at their poles, generated by the interaction of their global magnetic fields with the solar wind. Mars has no global magnetic field, only remnants of one frozen into areas of its crust; yet it, too, has auroras.  (Image credit: R. Lillis et al.; research credit: C. Bowers et al. and B. really wish kim stanley robinson had slightly better politics but red mars is nonetheless one of the best sci fi novels I've ever read. ridiculously well plotted and crafted. melancholically understated in some respects while shockingly dramatic in others. geography dot txt. incredibly good POV character work executed with a level of restraint that genuinely amazes me. still took me an eternity to get through but at least half of that is because I was close reading all the descriptive sections to make sure I pictured the landscape correctly
