Bring Back the Bombshells Batgirls!

In helping a friend of mine map out who all has been Batgirl across various DC continuities, I remembered a little jaunt to TVtropes where it mentioned that in a charming little number called Bombshells, the batgirl identity is shared by a baseball team.

This reminded me to actually go READ Bombshells, and oh. My. GOSH. It is the BEST FUCKING THING EVER!

What is Bombshells?

Basically, almost every male superhero got yeeted from the story or relegated to side character/civilian, while every female superhero takes the spotlight and gets to KICK SOME NAZI ASS (it's set during world war 2). Plenty of people get spotlight, but I'm gonna argue that the MAIN characters are probably Kate Kane's batwoman, Diana of Themyscira's Wonder Woman, Mera's Aquawoman (she hates that name, lol), Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy, Zatanna, and Kara Starikov's Supergirl. All the storylines tend to revolve around them.

Oh, also it's super gay. Like, every single character is a lesbian or bi, there's tons of ladies kissing and dating and having implied sex, and at least one character---one of the batgirls actually---is trans.

In summary, go read bombshells it's really good, but today I'm here to specifically talk about:

The Batgirls (and boys)

"One for the ribbon, two for the pearls! Three for the crimefighting---

So first off, Bombshells is an elseworld, so it can do whatever the fuck it wants with backstories and shit.

Subsequently; this version of Kate Kane is a major league baseball player, and her Batwoman costume is literally just a pallet swap of her baseball costume (plenty of people figure out her "secret" identity because of this, but she's not super concerned about it). She uses an actual bat as her main weapon as Batwoman, and it kicks ass. More fanfic writers, and hell, comics writers need to hand the Batfamily some baseball bats, because it gives us scenes like this:

Oh, and also this:

Anyway, point is, Batwoman has a bat and it's great. But this means when Gotham's bat-weilding protector gets drafted into the Bombshells to go fight Nazi's, some new faces have to pick up the slack in Gotham.

And so:

Inspired by their vigilante/baseball hero, Harper Row, Kathy Duquesne, and Nell Little pick up some bats of their own and start busting up crime! The three of them are mechanics, that old car is their batmobile, and they're the best of friends!

Of this original trio, Kathy is "the brass" or the leader, and she remains nominally in charge through the whole thing. Nell is "the brawn" and while every batgirl is good in a fight, Nell is a bit of a demolition specialist. Finally you have Harper, "the brain" who invents their gadgets, works on their batmobile, and also jokes that she's the mascot, as this whole thing was her idea.

They don't stay a trio for very long though! They're quickly joined by "the beauty" Alysia Yeoh, an old friend of Kathy's, in an effort to break Cullen Row out of a prison-like orphanage (she's the t-girl btw):

You may notice another girl crouched in the corner up there too! That's Bette Kane, Kate's niece and the rightful owner of Kane Industries who will forcibly take it over, clean it up, and use it for good on her 18th birthday in like a week!

In the meantime though, she heard about the batgirls and decided she wanted in! She crashes their jailbreak and helps them wreck shop! She mostly shares the "brass" role with Kathy---a leader in her own right.

Anyway, their now quintet quickly finds the awful headmistress of the Pinkney orphanage berating one Tim Drake, who still has a living dad somewhere, but was snatched up by a dirty cop because this whole city runs on Newsies rules (not even kidding, I'll get there in a sec). Turns out Tim and Alysia are old best friends. Anyway, Tim fills them in on the sitch: the headmisstress has been using the orphans as slave labor to build war robots for the nazis.

The batgirls (now including Tim!), bust up the basement and the robots, free all the orphanage kids, including Cullen, toss the awful headmistress and the dirty cop helping her to one Detectice Maggie Sawyer---Kate's wife---and the day is saved!

In the subsequent week, Bette takes over Kane Industries, starts funneling funds into housing for immigrants and refugees and relief and aid and all that good stuff, and also recruits the final batgirl of the team: Felicity Smoak (the chick in braids)! Thus we have a full team!

I'm only halfway through Bombshells, but the batgirls and their adventures are a recurring plot thread, since protecting Gotham is entirely up to them while Kate is away. They gain lots of other allies and enemies (including one hispanic immigrant Lois Lane who does straight up help them pull a newsies and make their own newspaper with the real news in it at one point), and their sections are probably one of my favorite parts about the comic. It just feels so sweet and high school, while still feeling Batman-esque/Gotham-typical.

Why You Should Care:

Now. I may only be halfway through Bombshells, but I am in LOVE. With the story and the characterizations and everything!!! And the batgirls are a personal fave of mine cuz I'm a sucker for found family and teens fighting crime and bat-weilding superheroes!

But my point is: for all that fanfic loves these tropes too, there is NO fanfiction for them (or at least not on ao3). There's practically nothing for the Bombshells continuity PERIOD, which is a shame, but also to be expected for an elseworld.

But that's why I'm here and telling you about it!

You guys! This is fanfiction! We love flinging the batfamily through alternate universes and making lots of different characters take on the familiar Batgirl and Robin roles!

Why not bring forth the Bombshells Batgirls?

If you're writing your own elseworld, I suggest you nab this adorable team, or something like it! If you're writing an alt universe crossover, feature these guys!

They are the Batfamily found family you want! They CALL THEMSELVES a Bat-family! They all move in together! They loooooovvveee each other! And, as is the nature of the Batgirl mantle, they do what they do largely as independent operatives without adult supervision!

I would really love to see these guys yeeted into an alternate universe and have to cope with just HOW different their continuity is. Not only will they inevitably be flung way into the future, since they're around in the 40s, but in most continuities they're completely unconnected from each other and are absolutely not a team of bat-weilding crime fighters! It would be so baffling for any mainline batgirl and robin to meet a team that is so disconnected from them and so unconditionally supportive of each other and so Badass Adorable!

In Summary:

I may have lost the plot a little with this, but my points are:

Bombshells is really good and you should all go read it

Bombshells has a team of adorable bat-weilding batgirls that has all the found family crime fighting tropes you could want without the bad blood of the mainline batfam

More people should write fanfiction for Bombshells

The Bombshells!Batgirls in particular I think are a great place to start with that. Nab the premise of a baseball team being crime fighters, or Gotham being protected by a group of scrappy children whenever the big bad vigilantes are away, or give these colorful kids their Bombshells!backstories.

Also use the Bombshells universe in particular when you're flinging bats across the multiverse. Yeet these babies into a mainline comics verse and let the juxtaposition and chaos run WILD! There's a million and one of these fics for the Young Justice cartoon, I know ya'll can do it for Bombshells

Also. Take every opportunity to give your Batfamily, and your Batgirls in particular, an actual bat. It'll be so much fun, I promise

Not so easily swapped with and other thoughts on racebending

When it comes to racebending characters and the like, there are cases where they can’t be easily racebent. Consider how something like Death Note built on animism, as Japan is predominantly animist, that if you were to make all the characters Cameroonian you’d also have to change the underlying religious subtext as Cameroon has a substantial Christian population. You’d get Witch Note instead with Light and Misa using demonic familiars to get to where they are, committing acts of witchcraft so alarming that a detective like L is sent to investigate those cases. I have thoughts of racebending the Death Note characters, but transporting the characters to Cameroon involves adjusting them to its particular cultural and religious context.

A Mortal Kombat that’s actually made by Asians and Asian Americans would have a more intimate relationship with Asian cultures, histories and philosophies in a way regular Mortal Kombat would never have, it would also be a Mortal Kombat that’s much less orientalist as this would be built on the lived experiences of the programmers and game developers supposing if they’re actually Asian or Asian American themselves. The Superman stories, with its immigrant undertones, would turn out very differently if its creators were indigenous Americans. Turning Superman into somebody who’s indigenous American effectively undoes or cancels the character’s association with immigration, especially if you have entire communities indigenous to the Americas for centuries and even millennia.

I’m pretty much addressing stories and characters where they can’t be easily race-swapped due to the underlying cultural contexts they take place in, especially if it’s particular to certain communities and cultures that can’t be easily exported onto others. Then there are characters that are rarely ever racebent, not necessarily so much due to an intrinsic quality, but rather certain communities and people project a lot onto them. Racebending Felicity Smoak is far less common than racebending Jason Todd and Tim Drake, in part because so many white women project themselves onto her that makes racebending her usually unexplored in fandom. It would also make a canonically racebent Felicity even more controversial because they project a lot onto her.

Or for another matter, Superman, where there’s a tendency to uphold him and his cousin as white American in a way Pete Ross, Lana Lang, Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen don’t get to be. They could easily be European immigrants and still be accepted as American, which is kind of racist not just to nonwhite immigrants but also to indigenous Americans themselves. And why reimagining Superman to be indigenous is practically impossible given the context and how white people project themselves a lot onto Superman and Supergirl. There was one Japanese American actor who played Superman before, but he’s the exception to the rule.

So in Superman’s case it’s a combination of something intrinsic to how he’s conceived that can’t be easily adapted to indigenous communities and also white people projecting a lot onto him, so sometimes certain characters can’t be easily racebent due to these two factors working together. It is possible but not particularly easy and smooth.

Behind him a man says "Well.. If it isn't Oliver Queen."

He forced a smile as he turned around saying "hey Max, how've you been?"

"Happy you drowned."

Oliver was taken to the back where he was Punched down by Max. Tommy came barging in for Oliver's rescue.

"Let him go!"

"I said let him go!"

"Told you he was gonna be pissed."

"Go away Merlyn, this doesn't concern you." Says Max

"If you want to get to him you're gonna have to go through me." Says Tommy

"And... I think they're gonna."

Tommy and Oliver start punching out Max's men until they are outnumbered.

Laurel comes in quickly punching him from behind and throwing him into his men.

"You done now, or do you want to see a real party?" Laurel asks

He looks up at her and says "Consider yourselves banned for life!"

"Hm. Don't care, we're not exactly missing much here." She snarks

"Yeah! What she said, You club sucks!"

"Are you guys okay?"

"So.. Where did you learn to do that?" Oliver asks impressed

While it was partially true, there was more to that story. One she wasn't planning on sharing with anyone, especially those two.

*Flashback*

Laurel still young, around the age of 6 was seen fighting an unknown woman with a stick.

"You've improved with your training, little one. But not enough yet." The woman said as she unarmed her

Laurel looked discouraged.

"Listen, believe it or not, you've come pretty far."

"But you still need more practice. I'm used to all of this, been doing it for over 20 years."

"You're still new, and these things take time."

"Thank you." Laurel says

"Would you like to try again?"

"Yes please."

Laurel was jolted out of her thoughts when Oliver started speaking "Laurel, what Thea said-"

"Really Oliver, it's fine. And I'd rather not talk about it right now, or.. With you." Laurel says with a sigh as she walks away.

*Flashback*

Oliver wakes up in the same cave, where he sees Yao Fei asleep.

He runs out of the cave passing many bushes, trees and branches on the way.

He coughs as he falls then continues running until he springs a trap where he ends up hanging in a tree by a net.

Diggle takes Oliver and Tommy to Big Belly Burger "How about you two take a seat and I'll grab some burgers and ice for your faces."

"That girl is pretty cute." Tommy says looking at Carly

"That girl is my sister-in-law." Diggle says protectively.

"Who I will never speak to... Or look at... Ever." Tommy says

"Uh.. I'm gonna grab a booth!"

Oliver walks up to Diggle "She's not wearing a wedding ring.. Brother out of the picture?"

"Yeah, something like that." He says as Oliver walks back with Tommy

"Hey you." Dig says as he walks over to Carly.

"It's so sweet of you to adopt those white boys. They need a good role model." Carly says

"That's my client, Oliver Queen." Dig says as Oliver grunts in pain as he takes a seat

"Looks like you're doing a bang up job of protecting him."

Over at the table, Tommy brings up Laurel. "Look...about Laurel."

"I was gonna tell you...it just. I wanted to.."

"Look Tommy, it's okay. Laurel and I happened a long time ago.. Besides I was dead.." Oliver says

"It was still wrong, you're my friend. And me being with Laurel was against about 50 different friendship principles." Tommy says

"Thank you, but like I said, it's okay." Oliver says

Back with Diggle and Carly she asks "How dangerous is this gig anyway?"

"It's a cakewalk, don't worry. " he says

"Too late. I already lost your brother to this job."

"And I can't forget that." She says with a sigh

Back at the table Oliver gets a call as Tommy says "you're being really chill about this."

"Hello." He says as he answers

"Хорошо, подожди один момент." (Okay, wait a moment.)

"It's a.." He smiles

"A Russian model calling me."

"Can I have a minute please?"

"Now I can see why you were able to be so chill." Tommy says, getting up from the table.

"So I checked out?" Oliver asks

"You did. Name is Floyd Lawton. I have the address, where he stayed last in Starling city." Says Alexi.

"Let's hope he's a creature of habit." Oliver says

"Go." He says

"1700 Broadway, Pappas Motel, Room 52."

"And you'll leave us out of this? Assuming he doesn't kill you first."

Oliver hangs up the phone.

Lawton is typing on a laptop.

The hood is waiting outside his door.

Lawton senses someone there, seconds before an arrow goes through his door.

Lawton begins heavily firing at the hood.

The hood is able to shoot two more arrows as Lawton reloads the gun on his wrist and shoots again.

An arrow goes through the mattress

As he fires again he runs and jumps out a window. As the Hood tries to chase after him, he loses him.

He hears sirens so he grabs his laptop and runs.

Oliver walks into the IT department and says "Felicity Smoak?"

She looks up at him. "I'm Oliver Queen."

"Yes, I know who you are." She starts

"Mr. Queen."

"Mr. Queen was my father." He says

"Right but he's dead. I mean- he drowned!"

"And you didn't."

"Which means you can come to the IT department and listen to me babble..."

Which will end!" She says

"In 3..2....1"

Oliver opens then closes his mouth before saying "I'm having issues with my computer and they told me to go see you."

"I was at my coffee shop.. Then I spilled a latte on it." He says

"Those are Bullet Holes." Felicity says Bluntly

"My coffee shop is in a bad neighborhood." He says

"Look... If you can salvage anything from it.. I'd really appreciate it."

Moira walks into Thea's room "Good, you're here."

"Yeah, I'm under house arrest." She says with a hint of sass

"Do you want to wear the Calvin Klein or the Zac Posen?"

"For dinner? I was just gonna wear my pajamas." Thea says

"No, Walter's stock auction."

"I think I'd rather be grounded."

"It's important that you come." Says Moira

"To who?"

"To me."

"Listen.. When you were 4 you brought a cat home." Moira starts

"It was a mean and filthy stray, but still you declared it would be coming to live with us."

"When your father got home from the office that day, he came in and saw what was going on.."

"He explained.. The cat was actually a tiger and that we needed to get it home. And you understood."

"Robert.. He was always so good at getting through to you, I was always so jealous of that." Moira sighs

"You never talk about him.. Dad." Thea says

"This is the first time you've talked about him in years"

"I think over the years.. You and I have gotten into some bad habits." Moira admits

"There's been a lot changing recently, and I think this can change too." Says Moira before walking away.

Back in Felicity's office "it looks like blueprints."

"Do you know of what?"

"The exchange building."

"What's that?" He asks

"It's where the auction for Unidac Industries is being held. Wasn't this supposed to be your laptop?" She asks

"Yeah."

"Look.. Whatever this Shakespearean family drama thing is, I don't wanna be involved."

"What?"

"Claudius, Gertrude.. Hamlet?"

"I never studied Shakespeare in the four schools I dropped out of. " he says

"Mr. Steele is trying to buy Unidac Industries, and you have a company laptop associated with one of the guys he's competing against." She says

"Floyd Lawton."

"No.. Warren Patel. Who's Floyd Lawton?"

"Apparently an Employee of Mr. Patel."

*Oliver's Voiceover*

The exchange building is surrounded by three towers with eyelines into the building. Lawton could get his kill shot from anywhere.

I can't cover the full area on my own. I'm gonna need some help.

The hood pops up outside of the police station as he sees Quentin and pins him against a squad car.

"You son of a bitch!"

"Quiet, detective."

"You've got some nerve trying this right outside the police station."

"Floyd Lawton, he's the one targeting the buyers." The hood says

"Interpol calls him Deadshot because he never misses. And you can look this up after I go."

"And stop chasing you?" Lance says sarcastically

"Warren Patel hired Lawton, I can't be sure who they're targeting, but there's a good chance it's all of the buyers." The hood says

"I can't protect them all in a space that big. I need your help."

"Professional help..?"

"Lawton laces his bullets with Curare. Tell your men to wear Kevlar."

"I'll tell them to shoot you." Quentin mutters.

The hood eases up and places the laptop on the hood of the car, and shoots an arrow to distract him.

At the Auction Walter walks in with Moira.

"It's quite a turn out." She says

"I see it as more of an opportunity." He says

"But regardless of the outcome, I'll still leave here the real winner. I already have the two most beautiful women here beside me."

"Two?" Moira asks, turning around to see Thea walking in, in a blue dress.

Thea hugs Walter "Thanks for coming Thea. It means a lot to your mother."

"And me."

A woman walks up to Walter "Mr. Steele, the auction opens in 5 minutes, make sure to place your bid by then."

"Thank you Gina."

He grabs a blue envelope from his pocket and looks at Moira and Thea "Shall we?"

They walk away and Lucas Hilton walks to Patel.

"Warren Patel, please come with me, sir."

As he walks away with him the police are confirming their stations.

"Unit One, All clear. Unit two, do you copy?" Quentin says

"We have Patel in Custody, but no sign of Lawton yet."

"Unit three?"

"Northwest Perimeter is all clear." Says a woman's voice over the radio.

"Unit 4?"

"Parking Structure is all clear."

"Unit 5, what's your status? " Lancer asks as the scene pans to Lawton taking place of an officer who is either dead or knocked out.

As he loads his gun Lawton responds on the walkie talkie "All Clear."

Laurel is walking by in the stairs at the courthouse when Tommy speaks up "Oh what a shock."

She looks over him slightly surprised.

"It's a Friday night, what are you doing here?"

"I'm an attorney and this is a courthouse, so I believe the correct answer is, my job."

"What's your excuse?" She asks him with a hint of attitude

"I wanted to talk to you about last night." Tommy says

"You mean how you and Oliver got your asses kicked, then I saved you?" She asks with a slight laugh.

"First of all. We shall never ever ever speak of that again!" Says Tommy as he stands up

"And I think we both know what I really meant."

"There's nothing else to say. It's all history." Laurel says as she turns around

"I spoke with Oliver." Tommy says

Laurel turns back to face him "He was surprisingly cool about it."

"He knew. I saw his face, and that is the expression of someone who knew long before anything was said."

"Why wouldn't he say anything."

"Maybe because he knows it's not really his business what we do."

"There's a silver lining though," Tommy says with a smile.

"Now that the full truth is out, don't you think there's a chance for us?"

Laurel looks at him with a slight sigh. "You said you didn't think I was a one girl type of guy, so let me prove you wrong."

"By dating me." She says

"By being better, being someone you want to be with." He says

"I'd definitely be interested in meeting that guy." She says

"Come on, let's get out of here. It's a Friday night." He says

She sighs and finally takes his arm. "Fine."

Back at Unidac Industries Oliver walks by Quentin "Well don't you scrub up nice?"

"Just here to support my family." Oliver says

"Me too.. God help me."

"Thank you." Oliver says as he walks away, causing Quentin to scoff.

"Dig, got your eyes open?" Oliver asks

"It's why I'm here. Other than answering patronizing questions."

"He's out of time.. If he's gonna do something, it will be before the auction." Oliver says aloud

"Sir?"

"I heard the story on the radio."

Walter walks over to Oliver as he sees him "Oliver, I'm so pleased you could make it."

"Walter, I think we should be careful, the police said some of the bidders on Unidac were murdered."

"My mother has already lost a husband.."

"If Moira shared your concern, I doubt she would've come with Thea." Walter says

Oliver walks away and over to his Mother.

"Hi."

"Oliver, what a wonderful surprise." Says Moira as Oliver signals Diggle over.

"I need you to get them out of here."

A red dot is seen on Walter as Deadshot lines up his shot. Quentin sees it, and as he takes the shot, Quentin pushes Walter down and out of the way, causing the bullet to hit a nearby server instead, and inciting panic.

Oliver looks to his mom and Thea "Are you hurt?"

"I'm fine, but what about Walter?" Moira asks

John is trying to lead them out as Oliver peers over and sees Quentin moving Walter to safety.

"Walter is safe."

"Sir, I need to get you out of here." Says Diggle

"Them first." Oliver says

As John gets them out Oliver begins running up the stairs.

"I'll find him ma'am."

As he runs up the stairs, he pulls a hood out of a trash can.

Lawton takes out another woman and then the hood uses a cable arrow to crash through the window.

As the Hood rolls through, Deadshot fires a barrage of bullets at him.

The hood shoots an arrow from behind a column and Deadshot shoots another barrage of fire.

As he shoots another arrow and takes cover, Lawton ceases fire, walking slowly and quietly.

As Lawton thinks he has the drop in him, the hood punches him from behind, knocking him to the ground.

The hood kicks at him and vaults over metal bars as he tries to fire another string of bullets at the vigilante.

The hood kicks him to the ground, breaking a table in half, before the ensue a trial of hand to hand combat.

The hood gets him pinned against a pillar, when Lawton also stabs him with something enough to cause pain and cease pressure.

Deadshot takes his bow and tosses it to the side.

As they tussle for a few more seconds, the hood grabs his bow and takes cover behind the pillar.

"Drop your guns." He says in his regular voice.

"I admire your work." Says Lawton enthusiastically

"Guess you won't be extending the professional courtesy."

"We're not in the same line of work. Yours is murder." Says the hood

"You've taken lives." Deadshot argues

"To protect others."

"You're only out for yourself."

Lawton scoffs and fires another barrage of bullets. The hood quickly fires an arrow. And hears it make contact as deadshot hits the floor with an arrow in his eye.

As the Hood checks the man who appears dead, he hears a loud gasping from behind which alerts him. Only to see Diggle who was shot in the collateral damage.

The Hood takes Diggle.

*Flashback*

Yao Fei is standing outside of the net Oliver was caught in with a knife.

"傻子" (fool) he said as he walked to the other tree.

"這個地方太危險了，任何人都不能獨處" (this place is too dangerous for any one man to be alone)

Yao Fei cuts the rope "他們會殺了你" (they'll kill you.)
