You write journals to pen down your thoughts and work through emotions,
I write journals so that i can imagine the people who will read this after my (hopefully dramatic and tragic) death weeping as they finally see me for who i truly i am and the genius that i possessed but was never able to show in my life.
I could think of no better way to share the news than this!
So when I was 17, my cat went missing and I'd given up hope of ever seeing him again.
Until on Monday, 27th of May, 2024, my friend sent me a FB post asking 'isn't that your mother?' about the person named on the microchip.
Here he is! 16 years old, and found safe, twelve whole years after he went missing!
Yesterday (Tuesday the 28th of May, 2024) I went to the rescue that had him, and I reclaimed my boy, renaming him Artie! (He'd originally been called 'Cat' because my mother and I couldn't decide on a name)
He's home safe with me now, currently inhabiting my bathroom and purring up a storm every time someone goes in there!
I'll be doing slow introductions between him and my current cat to give them the best possible chance of living in harmony!
Here's some pictures of Artie once we let him out of the carrier:
I finally tried those fancy little cake things for the first time today. You know, those dainty pastries that look like they fell straight out of the Victorian era, all intricately designed and prepared with the kind of glazed precision typically reserved for decorating gingerbread houses around Xmas. And you know what? They were actually pretty damn good. The flavors were subtle but distinct, like fading memories of grandma's kitchen back when cooking was still an art form and not just a means to cram calories into one's breathhole.
As much as I appreciated the nuances of these frosted wonders, I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to make them a regular part of my snacking routine. Maybe it's the quasi-intimidating etiquette of having to eat them with my pinky raised, or the fact that a box of twelve probably costs more than my weekly grocery budget. Either way, they're staying firmly in the "fancy treat" category for now. Though who knows, if I somehow become a billionaire blogger turned political pundit, perhaps I'll acquire the taste (and funds) for such upper-crust indulgences. But for today, I'll settle for a celebrating my first foray into high society baking with the same childlike glee I experienced when discovering the joy of frozen pizza rolls at age 12.
"Surely the flowers of a hundred springs
Are simply the souls of beautiful things!
The poppies aflame with gold and red
Were the kisses of lovers in days that are fled.
The purple pansies with dew-drops pearled
Were the rainbow dreams of a youngling world.
The lily, white as a star apart,
Was the first pure prayer of a virgin heart.
The daisies that dance and twinkle so
Were the laughter of children in long ago.
The sweetness of all true friendship yet
Lives in the breath of the mignonette.
To the white narcissus there must belong
The very delight of a maiden's song.
And the rose, all flowers of the earth above,
Was a perfect, rapturous thought of love.
Oh! surely the blossoms of all the springs
Must be the souls of beautiful things."
Fancies, Lucy Maud Montgomery
I am leaving tomorrow, travelling to Aotearoa New Zealand, where I'll spend a few blissful weeks with my girl. And it seems, the garden wanted to see me off with an early spring, as it is gorgeously colourful, abloom with narcissi and daffodils, hyacinths and primroses, muscari and even two bright pink tulips! Fancies, indeed!
