I spent a month reading harry potter fanfics and here’s what I learned

So for the past three and a half weeks, I’ve been doing basically nothing but reading Harry Potter fanfics and now I kind of just want to talk about them. No one cares but future me will! I tend to get caught in obsessions fairly easily (for instance, two months ago was comic books and last month was video editing and then k dramas). I’m feeling like my Harry Potter obsession is fading which makes me really sad cause it was a fun ride. I went from Drarry to Hinny, time travel to alternate realities, obscuris Harry to Dark!Harry, MCU AUs to Doctor Who AUs. I must’ve read more than 50 fics.

I’ve learned that I hate Dumbledore

Snape makes for a great mentor but I will only like him with proper character development

also where did Snape being Draco’s godfather come from? I don’t think this was in the books? I’m not angry, just confused

I read a fic that was so sad that I was physically unable to finish reading it -- actually I read two of those, one of them was a DID fic and the other Voldemort adopted Harry

the Voldemort one is quite possibly the most tragic thing I have ever read and even though it’s been two weeks I still haven’t been able to recover -- I was only halfway finished too GOOD LORD

another fic I read that was so fucking depressing was a time loop situation where Harry literally couldn’t get out of and it ended tragically

obscuris Harry is interesting but I really only like the ones where Newt is actually involved but I couldn’t find any finished ones

I don’t like it when Harry’s appearance changes, it throws me for a loop

there was this one where Harry got sent back in time and his figure got disfigured and so he didn’t even appear like himself anymore

I just find it odd for Harry Potter not to look like Harry Potter, idk

I also have a headcanon that his hair is very curly rather than shaggy

I haven’t been able to find a fic where Harry goes back in time to the Marauders era and has the right amount of angst but the right amount of fluff

I’ve read some good ones where the Marauders travel to Harry’s time but like,,, it isn’t quite what I’m looking for? I’m gonna have to write it, aren’t I? 

this doesn’t happen with irondad fics, literally everything you’ve ever wanted you can find it there

I read one where Harry did go back in time but she (fem!Harry) didn’t really interact with her parents or the Marauders that much, she became friends with Regulus instead

Regulus should’ve been in Gryffindor

I’ve not only read fics where Draco has been a Ravenclaw, Slytherin, but also a Gryffindor. I haven’t found one where he’s in Hufflepuff

I’ve read fics where Harry’s in every single house - the Ravenclaw one might be my favorite so far, it had to do with him going to a different timeline where there’s another Harry and he’s a major dick

Hufflepuff Harry one was funny, but it got distressing cause Dumbledore didn’t trust him and tried to get him expelled

actually the Hufflepuff one made my heart hurt cause Harry was put in the body of a Harry who isn’t the boy who lived and barely spoke and was basically like an even more traumatized Neville

Slytherin Harry is everything to me and he should’ve been in Slytherin

Ravenclaw Draco is something that can be so personal

I’m tired of reading Year One fics, I get it, there’s a stone, let’s move on

Year Four fics are my favorite however, there was one (which is my favorite) where Harry’s a necromancer and in the graveyard scene he calls corpses from the graves alive to help him get out of there it was so cool

I am partial to Harry/Draco but Harry/Luna is cute

there was a Pokemon Harry/Luna one that’s adorable and I’ve read it twice already

I like when there’s a ton of lore involved

especially Hogwarts lessons - like ancient runes can fucking get it, I love runes fics

there was an MCU AU one where I read Harry didn’t have his magic anymore, not as potent as it was, but he did have ancient runes

LISTEN I tried to get into Dark!Harry but after that Voldemort adoption one I can’t do it anymore, I will start crying literally right now -- he just wants to be fucking useful! He just wants to be loved! Is that too much to fucking ask for?

there was this Sherlock fic (listen, I went in fucking deep, it’s been a weird month) where fem!Harry is on the run from the Ministry because I don’t actually understand and Ron and everyone is out for blood for her

Eleventh Doctor/Harry is a pairing I was not aware of but I actually kind of love?

Kendo AU: Characterisation Notes

So I found some notes on how I wanted to characterise characters that weren't shown all that much in canon because they're, well, dead. We're barely given any info about them or their personalities, so this is just something to keep myself on track when I write them.

They're also all part of a friend circle of their own. I call them Posthumous Pals.

Sabito

▪18, first year university student, studying criminology

▪Hot-tempered, but doesn't hold grudges and forgives and forgets easily. His anger usually comes from a place of concern. Always nagging at Giyū and Makomo for being flighty, irresponsible or forgetful.

▪"Makomo, did you forget to pay your phone bills again" "Oi, Giyū, how many hours did you sleep last night? You look like shit" "Am I your alarm clock? Get up already!" "DON'T TELL ME YOU BOTH FORGOT THERE WAS A TEST TODAY OH MY GOD"

▪Actual Mum Friend. He's a little mad about it, but he cannot stop himself. Considering how often he has to remind them to eat or force them to study...his childhood friends really are useless without him.

▪TSUNDERE

▪Ultimately a nice guy, but his people skills could use work. He can get a bit standoffish and even scary. Still has a better rep than Giyū, though

▪Passionate but overzealous. He can be very overwhelming sometimes and unwittingly intimidates juniors. He used to tutor Tanjirō and his siblings as a side job and ended up scaring them...

▪Very hardworking and driven! He's the kind of guy who has a clear aim in life and probably a 10 year plan on how to get to where he wants to be. It makes him clash with Giyū and Makomo a bit, since they're either too unsure or carefree, but he's just worried for their future.

▪Unwilling straight man of his childhood friend group. Often the sole voice of reason and common sense.

▪Has feelings for Makomo for ages but stubbornly refuses to say anything to keep the status quo (Giyū's tired, send help)

Makomo

▪18, first year university student, studying arts

▪Between fiery, disciplined Sabito and melancholic, disgruntled Giyū, Makomo is the nice middle ground with a serene, gentle temperament.

▪She's probably too calm, if you ask Sabito. It comes with the downside of not taking anything seriously. Makomo has a tendency to brush off her friends' worries. Sometimes it helps temper Sabito and Giyū's anxiety; sometimes it infuriates them. A double-edged sword.

▪Has a hidden impish side. She likes to make fun of both Sabito and Giyū. Giyū gets disproportionately dramatic over it and accuses her of "emotionally profiting off of [his] distress."

▪Despite seeming the least obsessed with kendo compared to her friends, Makomo was actually the one to drag them into it...

▪Can come across as lazy because she doesn't have the same sense of purpose or drive as Sabito. She's also a bit spoiled and likes being pampered. Some might pin the blame on her godfather and mentor Urokodaki

▪Acts like the friendly, reliable onee-chan to her juniors and is the only senior Obanai actually likes but will shamelessly behave childishly in front of Giyū and Sabito. They don't like admitting that they also get childish in retaliation.

▪Of the three, Makomo is the best with people and their assigned PR manager though she can act distant without realising it. Has the kind of face where she always looks like she has something on her mind. People sometimes feel that she's a bit unapproachable because it's almost like they're interrupting something...

▪Gets bright-eyed and very chatty if someone brings up anything relating to arts, sculptures or dancing.

Kochō Kanae

▪18, first year university student, studying medical science

▪Poster child of the Genki Girl trope and child prodigy who makes you question your life's accomplishments

▪Kanae is one of those people who masters everything with little effort. She's not even the respectable hard worker type like Sabito or Shinobu; she just doesn't need to work too hard and still makes it anyway. Has never seriously struggled with anything.

▪Also filthy, disgustingly rich. She's a born heiress to a large pharmaceutical conglomerate and was spoiled by loving parents. Truly born with a silver spoon in her mouth.

▪Very cheerful and kind! She's the sort of person who likes to make children laugh, helps the elderly cross the street and makes sure no one feels left out. Probably visits orphanages and campaigns for environmental awareness or something.

▪Beautiful! Intelligent! Accomplished! Compassionate! How can someone be this perfect?

▪Unfortunately, she's also BIG CHAOTIC DUMB, has no financial sense, naive, incredibly unreliable, can be an obnoxious do-gooder and is notoriously lacking in common sensibilities. Absolutely cannot function in the real world without Shinobu. Even her boyfriend's very first impression of her was "rich idiot without a day job."

▪Everyone thinks "how on earth did Sanemi trick her into a relationship with him?" But no one thinks "how on earth did Kanae trick him into a relationship with her?"

▪Ironically, despite being rather dysfunctional individuals by their own, Kanae and Sanemi seem to have a fairly stable, calm relationship. It wasn't so in the beginning, though

▪More wise than you'd expect, but too bad you'd hardly see that side of her. She's too busy being a disaster.

Rengoku Kyōjurō

Not posthumous, in the sense that he doesn't die before the series but during it, but he's here anyway because he kicked it so quick smh rip ren

▪17, third year high school student, captain of his kendo club and also the star pupil of the Fire Branch

▪Gender-bent version of Kanae in that he's explosively cheerful and full of endless optimism and energy. Everyone fears them when they're together. The genki is too powerful...

▪Big Brother Energy™

▪He's your go-to guy if you have any troubles and need a listening ear, or a helping hand, or honest criticism, or just some advice. Anything you need, he is here!

▪Despite appearing well-adjusted, however, he's not as untouchable as he looks. Like everyone his age, he has some anxiety and fears over the future and impending adulthood. He has a hard time confiding in anyone, though, because he's so used to being the one relied on.

▪Big case of Mama's Boy Syndrome. He'll drop everything for her. Due to her weak health, he really worries about his mother.

▪Because the Fire Branch has close ties with the Water Branch, he sees the others fairly often. He's at his most chatty with Kanae, Shinobu and Sabito (though even Sabito gets worn out after a while) and is one of the few who genuinely likes Giyū, despite his social missteps and bumbling. Makomo and Obanai try to escape at first sight of him; they seldom succeed.

▪"He's like cough medicine. Good for you if you're feeling bad, but best taken in small doses."

▪Between him and Mitsuri, the Fire Branch easily has the most welcoming and encouraging atmosphere of all the dojos.

Kumeno Masachika

▪20, third year university student, studying psychology and sociology

▪Step aside, Kyōjurō, the real big brother is here.

▪He's old and experienced enough to actually have some of his shit together by now. Or maybe university has worn him out.

▪He has all of Makomo's unflappability, but without her flippancy. All of Sabito's responsibility, without his anxiety. Friendly as Kyōjurō without being overwhelming, realistic as Giyū without giving into pessimism and charismatic as Kanae without being unreachable. In short: the most down-to-earth, well-balanced, and least dysfunctional person within a 20 mile radius.

▪It makes him a bit of an odd sight in the Wind Branch, in between Sanemi's hair-trigger temper and Inosuke's obscene screaming. Legends say his calm is to overcompensate for the level of unbridled feral energy in the Wind Branch...

▪In truth, he's the scariest one amongst them if he does get angry. His juniors actually write apology notes to him if this happens, like young children who've just disappointed their favourite teacher.

▪Otherwise, he wins the award of Most Chill. He gets frequently deployed if they need someone to defuse tension. An important duty, when one considers that the Wind Branch is the most competitive, aggressive of the dojos.

▪Speaks a bit dryly, though it feels personable rather than snarky.

▪The dojo master of the Wind Branch is apparently trying to harangue him into being the next, though he's resisting because he wants to "go teach kids or something."

▪Maybe it's only fitting, since the rest of the Wind Branch already gave him plenty of experience at shepherding unruly children.

AU ideas below the cut!

So far this is what I got:

Even if Crowley denies it, it’s plainly obvious that he is VERY fond and attached to Adam (Aziraphale feels the same) the kid is very considerate, depending on the day, and way calmer than that Warlock kid

But despite it all, Aziraphale and Crowley lowkey miss the gremlin and his chaotic choices (with how the story goes in Good Omens, I think they would meet Adam and leave Warlock after a year)

And within that year, they got to know the kid better, but when they find out that there was a mistake (as per the story) the two godparents felt lowkey sad that they had to leave their charge

Bet that the farewells were rather awkward, and since that they (or rather, Aziraphale mostly) don’t want to leave on a sour note where they didn’t tell the whole truth, they explain the situation to Warlock and the kid blinks and lets out a single “oh”

You know how there’s the rule where the kid forgets overtime about their fairy godparents? I feel like Warlock would miss them sometimes as the years go by until they are merely a feeling that goes through his chest when he ponders here and there. Who wouldn’t miss the best godparents that a kid could ask for? (or in this case, accidentally borrowed)

But I do like the thought of Adam finding out about Warlock and then arranges a little party where Azzy and Crowley can see their 1st charge. (would it be 1st in this AU there’s bound to be other kids before these two but idk whatever works in this world)

Dog is rather fond of the “Owl” that sits close by the “Snake” but the snake keeps on snarling at him ever since jumping on the Owl in hopes of getting it to play with him

Aziraphale gives the best comforting and calming hugs and auras when Adam is down and is nervous about something; and likes to nap with his head on the angel’s lap while the other is reading with a hand going through the boy’s mess of a hair; the occasional wing appearance where the feathered limb rests on the kid like a blanket

“Long day at school?”“Yeah…”“Well hush now your parents won’t be home for a wee bit so take a nap before you go and do your homework, alright? Crowley can make you some tea once you’re awake.”“Okay, mom”

Can probably sense when the boy is sad, like 0.00001 seconds later he’s at his side like “my dear, would you like some hot chocolate?”

“You spoil him too much”“Excuse me, you do too!”“…Fair enough.”

Bullies? Oh they better run now before they lose their souls

“Hey Crowley…”“Hey kid—oh what thE—are you alright?? Where did you get these scrapes??”“Some kids at my school. Nothing too bad really—-Crowley wait no please don’t grab a knife I’ll call Aziraphale if yOU DO, NO—”

Crowley likes to mess with Adam a little bit, like he would be spraying his plants one day and then Adam gets curious and watches for a while in wonder before getting water all over his face and sputters while Crowley is holleriNG AND DODGING ADAM’S WEE FISTS

Adam’s parents are lowkey concerned when they see a snake and a barn owl on Adam the first time he brings them in but whatever accepts them anyways once they see how behaved the animals are (most of the time)

Adam would be reading on the couch and Crowley (in snake form) would slither around and wrap around the kid before plopping his head on the crook of Adam’s shoulder, letting the youngin use his body as both an arm rest and a book rest

Aziraphale (owl form) hoots fondly before flying over to sit beside the two

Parents are like “wow they really are behaved” and leaves them be with a smile ^^

…until Dog gets on the couch once he sees the Owl and all hell breaks loose

I don’t know when the internet decided Aziraphale was gonna be an owl - maybe I missed something - but that art you drew is the cutest damn owl I have ever seen and I say that as someone who has had both Harry Potter and Gahoole phases. Thank you for bringing that into the world, it’s precious. 💙

Awwww thank you!!! I just thought that a barn owl suited him best since owls are usually associated with books, plus the softness/cuteness of the animal is perfect. Even the hecking face shape is a heart.

Let’s see…

Even if Aziraphale gives the most comforting/mother-like vibes and hugs, Crowley likes picking up the kid when Adam is in need of some sort of contact. He doesn’t realize this, but he’s as comforting as his angel

I like to think that Warlock can join in on the party. I mean Adam would still be their charge, but the thought of all four hanging out is really damn cute. The gremlin needs more love despite his shenanigans.

Adam isn’t one to show much emotion, like in the show, I’ve noticed that he doesn’t emote as much. I mean sure he does smile every so often but as a kid his age (11) would be expressive little laughing shits, but then again this is the literal Spawn of Satan, so that might’ve given him a handicap.

BUUUT, when the kid does smile and lets out a small laugh (lets say that he’s watching his godfathers bicker as per usual), Crowley and Aziraphale just drops whatever they’re doing and stares at the kid as if they heard wrong. The smile is still lingering so the two are just Emotionally Compromised™

“…are you two crying? What—” “N-NO!!!!“

Adam gets in trouble one time and his parents are being called to the school, but let’s say that Arthur and Deirdre are super busy, soooo…let’s say Nanny Ashtoreth comes by with a slightly nervous but ready Aziraphale (Principal is confused but doesn’t question it, that or Adam made them believe for a day that these are his parents or something idk)

Then after that’s handled, Adam comments like “Huh, this doesn’t seem to be your first time doing this trick. It looked like you knew what you were doing.” then Nanny A. and Aziraphale share a look before smiling fondly at the memory of doing the same thing but with Warlock the year before. “I suppose you can say that.”

Crowley and Aziraphale are both the good/chaotic godparent (use your imagination for this one, Adam’s life is full of fun moments after all)

The Plants are a bit wary of Adam, due to his satanic being, but like him more than Crowley, not that they were going to admit that to the Demon

The thought of Adam talking nonsense to the plants as a form of venting makes me smile, like the godfathers catch wind of it and let’s the kid do his business before Adam finishes and plops onto the couch, all relaxed and naps away. Aziraphale waves a hand and there’s soft pillows beneath his head and on his back, and Crowley saunters over to place a blanket on him.

That’s all I can come up at the moment! It’s mostly just cute ideas though haha

Case 2: The major injury where Adam is in trouble Big Time™

Picture this in your head alright (since I’m actually planning to draw visuals of this when I have time off work, I just have to lay this out hEH)

A hurt Adam on the ground while the Big Bad Person/Thing is in front of him. But then we spot a Barn Owl and a Snake coming towards the scene (Snake is in the Owl’s gentle talons as it flies btw) and dives into the ground before exploding upwards into a flurry of feathers, before we finally see a VERY pissed off Aziraphale and Crowley, wings covering the Bad’s view of the kid almost immediately. Sword in Zira’s hand, and some other weapon in Crowley’s.

C, sharp teeth and all: Biiiig misssstake in hurting thisssss kid, pal.

A, lights sword aflame: Very. Big mistake.

Gonna reverse on anon’s last thing. Would the ineffable godfathers call Adam “their kid”? They do all the paternal shit like. Care for him and do things with him and are overly protective? Prolly ooc

I wouldn’t put it past them!

Consider this case then, if it seems too ooc: They sometimes forget that Adam is their grandson and not their kid, since they’re watching over him and trying to make sure that he doesn’t get into too much trouble that the Literal Spawn of Satan should be in. They do subtle actions and say comforting words that makes one think that they’re his second pair of parents, but not too much, to the point it’s overbearing.

Overly protective is also a thing, but I don’t think they would be those helicopter parents where they sneak a glance every 5 seconds. Seems a bit much. We all know that Adam is quite capable of himself, as the show has shown us, it’s just when supernatural occurrences is when the two try everything to make sure that Adam doesn’t get hurt, if any of this makes sense.

Nah Crowley’s sticking with his snake form (have to stretch that noodle after 6000 years after all) and Aziraphale is going to go for a Barn Owl. Just something about odd pets seem to be more fitting in the AU, you know?

And as all technicalities go, danger noodle gets a tank and mother hen gets a perch and a nice round cage that’s big enough for him.

Is it a bad call to post this now since it won’t get a lot of attention this late at night? Probably. But I have 0 patience, my friends are asleep and I’m desperate for validation.

I wanted to do a stylized atmospheric comic but I couldn’t not do my regular comic style so I did both. It’s not a lot. Just Wilbur getting resurrected. Like pfffff this is the lamest thing but i think it looks kinda cool.

In the fairly odd parents au Adam has that ‘Crowley is the fun one but Aziraphale fixes it’ But Crowley is also the ‘careful what you wish for’ and Aziraphale’s magic is a bit more lenient. Idk I just,,, really love the concept and here for any new ideas you have for it 👍👍

Omg this is the best message, like?? I’m so glad that you got those vibes from the AU, it was what I was going for (for the most part) since both Crowley and Aziraphale could be either the fun or the “w h y” godfather because it works both ways!
