When I say you’re my friend that means:

I want to hear you ramble and rave, to know what special interests you crave. I will sit for hours listening to you tell me about it and I will enjoy it the whole time.

I want you to be weird. You don’t have to mask and pretend to play “normal” or whatever society taught you to be with friends.

I want to know what’s wrong! Don’t bottle it up and be afraid to share what you’re struggling with. I’m not going to think any less of you. Even if I can’t directly help I want to be able to support you however I can.

Friends aren’t just a title I throw around on people I know. It means I care about you. I WANT to be your friend! I am extremely selfish and obsessive with the people I like and want them to know how much they mean to me.

I live for the soft devotion of platonic love. I drink a mango slushie and I think of her because mangos are her favorite fruit. I see a book she read and told me about how much she loved and I think of her. I think of all of my favorite girls in the whole wide world when I see anything about their favorite singers and bands. A color, a melody, a cloud, a single speck of glitter, anything that I see beauty in reminds me of my best friends. I am so grateful for the blessing that is my amazing, loving, perfect friends. You are so beautiful inside and out and I love you.

i'm going home and i'm walking with my friends. the sky is dark, the lamplights warm and bright.

i watch the passing jeepneys stain them shades of blues, pinks, and greens— car headlights glare against my best friend's glasses.

it's late and we're still outside. it's late and we're talking about our provinces, looking up at the sky and bemoaning the lack of stars.

i hate being out late, but i'll make an exception. because i can't, can't hate the way they laugh at a joke they could barely hear, snickering over the sound of moving cars. can't hate the way the night feels less daunting by their side.

"you're not allowed to get lost," i tell one of them. he laughs. "i'm serious," i say, but there's a grin on my face that's anything but. "if you get lost, we're all screwed."

"it's fun getting lost," he tells me, grinning as a breeze ushers by. "why, are you tired of us already?"

no, i want to say, an answer on the tip of my tongue. of course not, my silence speaks. a motorcycle whizzes past.

i used to wonder what love is like. used to search for it in movies and people and within the confines of a mirror. i used to wonder how it would feel to look at someone and think, yeah. i'd want to get lost with you.

but i found it, here. found it on this sidewalk with my closest friends at my sides, our formation changing and changing as we walk, conversations merging and intertwining until traffic blares beside us and we all hush up and wince.

i wish, like always, to keep this moment with me until the end of time. i wish to bubble up this starless night and watch the colors slide over us all again and again, a kaleidoscope of everything that matters to me and everything i never want to lose.

i don't think i give a shit what love is meant to be like anymore.

i think i just want to keep holding my friend's hand.

...we didn't get lost, in the end.

goodbyes are said, our group dwindling until it's just two of us left. as the crossroad that separates us comes into view, we hug and say, take care. be safe.

and then, murmured between us, "text me when you get home."

(a sentence that burrowed deep in my heart, warmth seeping like sunrays into my skin.)

i think i could have a million nights like this and enjoy every single one. i think i could rewind this hour over and over and never get tired of it, even as my feet ache and my eyes grow heavy.

i think i'd give up on seeing the stars if it means we get to do this forever.
