7x04: Darkness Falling

Chenford

The Kojo scene is meant to parallel 6x08, showing-not-telling just how far Chenford have come. 6x08 was beautifully executed—painful in the best way—like an excruciatingly haunted version of Rascal Flatts’ What Hurts the Most. 7x04 was not. One of these days, probably over the summer, I'll write a full psychoanalysis meta of Tim in that 6x08 scene.

The star of 7x04 is Kojo (duh). He senses Lucy before she even knocks. He listens to Tim’s gentle command to “stay”—at first. But the moment Lucy leaves, he whines, like, “Hey, Mom, I’m your dog. Remember me?” He doesn’t chase after her, even though we know he wants to. Melissa’s out of character ad-lib about the butt scratch (she confirmed this was her, not Lucy) was a distraction that pulled focus from Lucy, but that’s on Kojo’s scene partner, not him. Kojo did his job perfectly. Also Eric Tim sitting on his couch? Hot as hell.

"I'm sorry, why are you at my door asking me that?"

"Come on!"

Tim’s line is all of us wondering why Lucy is even at his door. It’s a tongue-in-cheek way to force a moment between them without actually showing any real progress. The show hasn't done the work to establish that Chenford are at a place where Lucy would just show up at his house, and I’m not going to fill in the gaps with interviews or my imagination. That’s their job—both the writers and the actors. As someone who strongly identifies with Lucy, I’m disappointed in how she’s being portrayed.

Like, you’re telling me Lucy couldn’t just pull Tim aside at work for this conversation? That she chose to have a conversation about confidential police matters in front of his open door where his neighbors could hear? And Tim Bradford of all people doesn’t have a security camera? Come on. I get that Lucy values Tim’s advice—that’s always been clear. But he’s also tainted. He broke up with her to protect her from being tainted by him. So why is she coming to his house? And why is he letting her? If he truly cared enough about her and her career to end things (because “you have more to lose than Angela”), then he wouldn’t let her do this.

If I were delulu enough, I'd see this as the same sleight of hand flirting that parallels 5x21:

"Do you mean do I miss you already? No. I'm fine."

"You are such a jerk."

They missed the mark on this if that's what they're going for.

Illuminating polygraph tests

All of the takes I’ve seen focus on this line as subtext for the “Do you love me?” moment, reading it as Tim’s way of affirming that he still loves Lucy. But I see it differently. I believe the "Do you love me?" question from the polygraph test was Lucy’s way of testing the validity of the setup. Tim put the test together himself—it wasn’t conducted under any official capacity where it would have been vetted for false positives and negatives. The point wasn’t for Lucy to find out if Tim loves her; it was to gauge whether the test could accurately detect deception, particularly in the context of undercover work.

Look, the UC Lucy storyline isn’t over. I loved some of Lucy’s UC personas (Juicy) and I didn't love others (Jamie). There’s a low-priority sociocritical analysis of Jamie I’d love to write up at some point, but for now, it’s on the back burner. Point being, UC hasn't gone away. It showed up briefly in the shortened S6 and in 7x01, Grey brings up Lucy’s UC aspirations before assigning her a rookie.

The illumination Tim speaks of? I think it's about UC. And we’ll likely see one or both of Lucy and Seth going UC in 7x07, with this line acting as a throughline from Grey’s mention of UC in 7x01. I think something will happen in 7x06 that will cause the UC conversation to reappear.

Feeling's mutual.

Let’s get one thing straight: Kojo sent Lucy the birthday card, okay? He just needed a little help. Kojo doesn’t have opposable thumbs, so Tim had to write it for him (though, to be fair, Kojo signed it). Kojo can’t drive yet—he’s three in human years, and you need to be at least sixteen for a license in California—so Tim had to drive him to Lucy’s apartment. Kojo also doesn’t speak English, so duh, Tim had to translate “feeling’s mutual” for him. Let’s be clear: this isn’t Tim saying he misses Lucy. It’s Tim saying Kojo misses Lucy.

Joking aside, "feeling's mutual" is a sign of progress on Tim's part. I would have liked to see it delivered with more softness-not necessarily to the extent of I am now (although that would be nice) but somewhere in the middle of what we got for feeling's mutual and I am now. Tim's guard is up, and I think Eric was intentionally playing it that way. Tim has always been a complex character, due in no small part to Eric's microexpressions. That doesn't mean Lucy needs to lean into it.

Ordering food.

Lucy doesn’t look like she’s leaving anytime soon (and that’s on her). She clearly loves Kojo—Tim knows it. He’s just trying to be a good host. There’s nothing more to it on his end. But Lucy? She suddenly realizes just how comfortable she is at her ex’s place, and now she’s scrambling to screw her head back on again. She closes the door as if to say I'll see myself out and don't follow me to my car. Again, why even show up at his place in the first place?

Lotus necklace

This is Lucy’s first time wearing it. It’s part of her culture and symbolizes new beginnings. That said, I doubt there was any of that intention behind it. Julia, the costume designer, doesn’t seem particularly attuned to Lucy’s culture, and from what I can tell, she likely just chose something that looked similar enough to Tim’s necklace while still being distinct.

What hurts the most

What bothers me most about the Chenford scene is that it didn’t have to be this way. Their relationship had issues—built partly on lies—but the partnership and trust are still there. I've mentioned several times that I have no issues with Chenford as partners. The show messed up how they got together, fine. So take a step back, rebuild what needs rebuilding, but you don’t have to tear down the entire foundation. You're messing with natural soil at that point.

Lucy probably had a key to Tim’s house at some point—maybe she still does. I'm sure she's slept over there plenty (and then some), maybe even has a drawer and closet space. But she knocks now because it’s not her place to just walk in anymore.

Tim

My blorbo. I need you to heal and get back together with Lucy Chen when you're all healed, okay? She'll continue putting out your spot fires but you need to do the work. I need you to do the work. The writers have turned you into a piece of work and that's not okay. You're not a piece of work. You're a masterpiece.

Lucy

My other blorbo. Why is she playing B&B hostess to her ex's ex (Rachel) and her ex's wife (Bailey)? With all the kid talk between Bailey and Nolan, why not stick Bailey with Wopez or Jayla who actually have kids and live in decent sized homes? She can bond with Wes/James over being a LEO spouse.

Nyla

Why did Angela and Nyla even separate in an unfamiliar space where they are literal targets because flashlights in the dark? Nyla injected with a paralytic (and dirty needle?) and beaten was all kinds of fucked up and difficult to watch. That was one of the worst things to happen to any character.

Nyla doesn't need to be strong all the time and I'm glad Angela saw through that at the hospital. I can't wait for her to shine this season.

Wopez/Wesley

Someone give him a hug. Del Monte's a dick for talking about how attractive Angela is but it puts things into perspective for Wes, it showed Wes that he's overreacting. His feelings are valid but the Detective crushing on Ange did so in a therapy session. He wasn't hitting on Angela. There is a difference.

Wes guilt tripping himself over Novak. Angela consoling him. Wopez love.

Miles

Miles is layered like Tim is layered. This guy's putting up a front because he's hurt. His fuck ups and cockiness are part of his baggage. His facade is fading though and I have a feeling we'll see the real Miles soon. His last scene with Tim was chef's kiss. He's starting to understand Tim four episodes in just as Lucy was breaking down Tim's walls early on (clocking him as calculating not cruel in 1x04 and in 1x07 calling him weird and DEAR Method incarnate, stealing his money clip).

Bailey

Nothing against Jenna Dewan—she's talented—but the conditions she’s working under hinder her ability to truly shine. The character feels underdeveloped and, at times, shoehorned into the story rather than organically fitting in.

In her scenes with Lucy, Celina and Wade, there's such a focus on her as if the others are there to 'serve' her. Lucy serving Bailey a hot beverage was likely just a blocking decision to justify Lucy being on FaceTime with Nolan, but Bailey expecting Lucy to bring her luggage? Ick. Rachel's unemployed and doesn't have anything better to do. Ask Rachel. And while I can understand Bailey getting territorial about another woman in her home, the moment she realizes it’s Celina, she just doesn’t care. Not even a thank you.

Don't even get me started on Wade. I'm more upset at how Nolan treated Wade than I am at Bailey. He is your Lieutenant and your Watch Commander. Mid Wilshire is his house and you do not disrespect Wade Grey in his house. You want someone to babysit your wife? Fine. Ask Smitty or Wrigley. Don't ask Wade like you're owed. He's dealing with a corruption scandal and even if he weren't, he doesn't have time for your primadonna drama.

Seth

He gets his own section this week. I'd put his name under Lucy's because his storyline is related to hers, but he doesn't deserve it. Under Bailey you go, Seth. While many in the fandom are cooing at him like he's just a baby, I've hated him since the beginning.

On top of my inkling, Lucy Chen has repeatedly been screwed over by white men in her career. I have a bad feeling he's gonna continue to be a liability on Lucy's career. She already got dinged by Grey in 7x02 and by Grey and brass in 7x03 because of him.

On top of his lying and taking advantage of her empathy, there's the narcissism. When Lucy tells him to put his phone away, he gives some bullshit sob story about his test results and dejectedly says “okay” as if it's Lucy's fault. He doesn't put his phone away, she catches him in another lie with his Google Alerts, proving again that his word is useless. She needs to set better boundaries with him—a simple “What did I just say?” would make it clear she’s not here to coddle him.

Seth disrespected rank and a direct order from his TO. When Miles disrespects rank, he gets reprimanded by both Tim and Lucy (you're not fit to breathe the same air ... darlin'). Seth gets none of that. I'm tired of white men getting preferential treatment on this show.

Then there’s his incompetence—he can’t even measure distance correctly. On top of that, he’s outright rude to Miles, like he has any room to be a dick. And that “Whoopsie” moment? Straight-up Criminal Minds unsub behavior.

Other thoughts

Kevin Zegers is always welcome on my screen. Much like Lucy fangirling over Vampire Cop, I had a crush on him back in the day.

Tim's new home has enough wood and trinkets to appease all the fire gods. It should've been sacrificed in exchange for all the other homes that burnt up in last month's fires.

I did not care for Novak but at least we got Angela recruiting those sorority girls to the LAPD out of it.

Hulu doc? Okay, Alexi. The Rookie's big on Hulu. We get it.

“Congratulations,” the doctor says as your second baby is placed in your arms. “Two healthy babies.”

“They’re perfect,” you murmur, your eyes on the baby boy in your arms.

“A nurse will be in shortly to take them for full checkups,” someone informs you.

“How do you feel?” Tim asks.

You look away from your son and smile at the sight of Tim holding his daughter. She beat her brother into the world by nearly three minutes, and Tim has been enraptured with her since then.

“I’m okay,” you assure him. “We did good.”

Tim scoffs and lays his hand on your son’s back as he corrects, “We did great.”

“Hello, Bradfords,” a nurse greets with a knock on the open door. “I’m here to borrow these babies.”

You watch as Tim hands your daughter to the nurse to be placed in a bassinet before he turns to you to take your son. It makes you uncomfortable to hand them over so soon after giving birth, but the first checkup is necessary. Tim takes your hand and sits on the edge of your hospital bed to wait together.

“Did you call Angela?” you ask.

“Where are those pretty Bradford babies?” another nurse singsongs as she enters. “Checkup time!”

You furrow your brows, but Tim is on his feet before you can ask any questions. Tim is heartbreakingly familiar with the reality of evil in the world, and he realizes before you that something terrible has happened. As he races into the hall, fear settles over you as tears build in your eyes. If the real nurse is here now, who has your children? And where are they?

The nurse leaves to double-check that your babies weren’t transported by another nurse, and you’re left alone. After several minutes alone, scared, Tim returns and shakes his head. His jaw is clenched tightly, but you can tell he’s only a moment from breaking.

“I reported it to the department,” Tim says, his voice tight. “Angela’s on the way and I let her know too.”

You nod before you sit up carefully, wincing in pain as you swing your legs over the edge of the bed.

“Hey, hey, no,” Tim murmurs, rounding the foot of the bed. He lowers before you and lays his hands over your thighs. “You just gave birth; you need to rest.”

“I need to find them, Tim. We have to find them!” you exclaim through your cries.

“I know. We will, I promise we will.”

“But you don’t need my help.”

Tim smiles at your attitude, understandable anger building beneath your pain, fear, and tiredness.

“Your help isn’t the issue, it’s your health.”

“Timothy,” Angela greets. She walks to your side and hugs you tightly. “Tell me everything.”

You lie back carefully as Tim recounts the events of the past few minutes. Angela nods along, then looks around your room.

“They’re still in the hospital, I’d bet,” Tim concludes.

“Grey stationed officers at every opening to keep it that way,” Angela responds. “There’s plenty of hiding places in a hospital. But Tim…”

“I don’t know,” he answers. “I have no idea who would do this. I’ve put plenty of people away, called CPS hundreds of times, any of those people could have decided to return the favor.”

Lucy and Nolan knock on the open door, and Tim waves them in as Angela draws a diagram of the hospital on the whiteboard opposite you. Lucy walks directly to your side while Nolan stands beside the door to watch the hallway.

“What do you need?” Lucy asks softly.

“I don’t know,” you whisper, wiping a stray tear from your cheek. “Other than the obvious.”

“We’re going to find them. Half of the station is here for you.”

“There’s only one option that finishes this quickly,” Angela decides. “We split up and search every floor of this hospital.”

Tim looks to you rather than answering, and you promise, “I’m okay to be alone. I trust you, all of you, to find them and bring them back to me. Do whatever you have to do.”

“We will,” Tim promises. “Nolan, stay here, keep an eye on this hallway. Lucy, you’re with me.”

Lucy squeezes your hand kindly before she walks to Tim’s side. Nolan steps out of your room with them and closes the door. Completely alone, all you can do is wait.

“Hey,” Tim calls urgently. A male nurse spins and raises his hands in question. “Have you seen a nurse in pink scrubs with twins?”

“There’s lots of nurses, pink scrubs, and twins here, sir,” the man answers.

Tim takes a measured step toward him, and the man steps back urgently, bumping into the desk behind him.

“Do you want to be charged with aiding and abetting a kidnapping?”

“Sir, if you’ve seen a woman in pink scrubs with two bassinets, you need to tell us now,” Angela interjects.

“I haven’t,” he answers quickly. “I swear I haven’t.”

Tim steps away from the scared nurse and sighs.

“This floor is clear, no sign of them,” Angela reports.

Tim’s phone buzzes in his pocket, and he retrieves it without looking away from the empty hallway.

“I remember when I wasn’t allowed to look at my phone on duty,” Lucy muses.

“Your children hadn’t been abducted,” Tim snaps. He reads a message, furrows his brows, and then says, “Angela.”

Angela knows that Tim using her first name isn’t a good sign, and she's proven right when he passes his phone over. “Where is this?”

“I can’t tell. The message seems familiar,” Tim replies.

Angela zooms in on the picture while Tim repeats the message to himself. Lucy moves beside Angela and looks at the picture, pointing to any discernable items in the background. The image shows your son in the bassinet front and center, and while it’s clear that they’re still in the sterile, white hospital, it’s unclear where.

“Supply closet,” Angela realizes just as Tim says, “Keiran Tumble.”

“The counterfeiter?” Lucy asks. “What’s his problem with you?”

“I arrested him, but I’m also why he lost visitation rights for his kids. They were in the warehouse with the printing fumes. He hasn’t been out of prison long.”

“Prison for counterfeiting?”

“Federal prison. The Reserve pressed additional charges. When he got out, he got served with the papers about his kids.”

“Wait,” Angela interrupts. “You said it was a female nurse.”

“Keiran’s girlfriend,” Tim guesses. “I didn’t see her, she wasn’t there when we raided his operation, but I’ve heard plenty about her.”

“Me too. Tim, she’s suspected of at least three murders. This isn’t a manhunt; we have to find her without risking your kids.”

“ Supply closet?” Tim repeats. “Let’s find the right one, and then we move in. She makes one move toward them, and you drop her.”

“Tim, maybe you should sit this one out,” Lucy suggests.

“No,” Angela answers. “If this were Jack, I’d want to be right there when we found him. Look that monster in the face and remind her that at the end of every day, I go home to my family.”

“I’m more use here, Chen,” Tim assures. “How’s Nolan?”

“He said everything’s clear there. Only a few nurses through since we left.”

Tim nods, but Angela purses her lips in thought.

“What?” Tim inquires.

“Isn’t your room across from a supply area? Wouldn’t someone have needed something by now?” she asks.

“No one saw them because they didn’t go far,” Lucy realizes.

“Let’s go!” Angela exclaims.

Fiddling with the blanket over your legs, you think about what you will do when you get your babies back. Kiss them, apologize even though they won’t know what’s happening, and then beg Tim to take you home. You refuse to think about any alternative.

“Yep,” Nolan says on the other side of your door. “All clear here, too. Good luck.”

“C’mon, Tim,” you whisper.

You trust him more than anything, but right now, your fear threatens to override all of your rational thoughts.

Suddenly, a single gunshot sounds. Immediately after, you hear screams and loud promises that everything is alright and everyone is safe. You, however, refuse to believe it until you see your husband and children. Frozen in uncertainty and fear, you count your shallow breaths rather than running through possible scenarios.

Two firm knocks on your door are followed by Nolan smiling as he holds the door open. Tim steps in with both of your babies cradled in his arms and a relieved look. You release a shaky breath, then smile as tears roll over your cheeks.

“It’s over,” Angela promises as she hugs you. “We got her.”

Tim walks to the other side of your bed and carefully lowers the twins to your chest. They coo softly in their sleep, none the wiser about what they’ve been through. Holding them against you, you kiss their heads and whisper that you love them.

“Do you know what you need now?” Lucy asks.

“Get me out of here,” you beg, smiling.

“I’ll see what I can do,” she answers, leading Nolan out of the room.

“What happened?” you ask Tim.

“Do you remember Keiran Tumble?” You nod, and he places his arm around your shoulders as he continues, “He got out, mad about his arrest and losing his kids, and sent his girlfriend to make me feel some of the same pain. Or that’s the working theory.”

“It’s right,” Angela adds. “Only a criminal would be that stupid.”

"So, Nolan radioed an all-clear, got her guard down, and we went in. She shouldn't be out for a very long time."

You lay your head against Tim’s shoulder and say, “I love you.”

“Aw, I love you, too!” Angela jokes.

“If you weren’t our first choice for godmother, I’d kick you out,” Tim tells her.

“You love me.”

“Thank you,” you interject. “I’m glad you’re both here.”

“I’m going to go fill in Grey and then make sure your house is ready for an early return,” Angela says as she steps toward the door. “Need anything else?”

“You’ve done more than I can ever thank you for,” you answer. “I’ll call you later.”

“Like she won’t still be at the house when we get home,” Tim mumbles.

“Hey, I filled up your freezer with comfort food, be nice to me, Timothy.”

Alone with your babies, you smile as Tim extends his finger to your slowly waking son. You’ll never get tired of being with them, and there’s no one else you’d rather have by your side than Tim Bradford.

-Lucy doesn't know Tim is married so it was a shock when she met his wife Dr Bradford after she got stuck with a needle and she sees a different kind of Tim while he is with his wife

-Everyone bad mouthing Tim saying “who would want to be with a hard ass” and stuff like that and y/n over hears it and defends Tim completely outting their relationship but not caring

-Y/n being a badass and shutting down Ashley who was trying to flirt with Tim (her boyfriend) and Tim just being proud of her and everyone else just laughing at her jealousy

-Y/n is a high level drug dealer and Tim arrested her one day, she basically became his C.I years later anytime Tim is in trouble she find out from someone on the streets and she shows up to help him, and over time they just fall in love

-Y/n was in the military for a long time, she transferred from NYPD to LAPD because half way during her rookie year she couldn't take the cops there everyone undermined her and never understood how good she was even though she had military background, when she transferred over she got tim bradford as her training officer someone who understood the military background well, they continue to work together and get closer and eventually start dating

-Y/n defending Tim against Lucy after Lucy was bad mouthing Tim for something that wasn't his fault

-Tim introduces his boyfriend to his friends. I just really want bi Tim

-Tim's girlfriend was pregnant before meeting him but the baby daddy didn't want it, Tim and Y/n become close friends and eventually dating and Tim become the kids dad and maybe in of the rookies find out it's not actually Tim's kid and they say something bad about it and he flips out

-Tim having a shy girlfriend who the rookies pick on because she is so quiet (protective Tim)

-Tim is only nice to one person y/n it confuses everyone but nobody knows they've been together for years, until they do find out

-Tim had a best friend when he was younger she always looked out for him and took care of him but her family found out they were dating and she had to move away when they were 17 and he hasn't seen her since… till she walks into the police department as a detective, and they finally reunite which each other after so long of not seeing each and they finally get a chance to be together like they always wanted.

Station doesn’t know about firefighter reader then on day they go to drop Lucy’s lunch off and they find out

lunch date

“Hi my love,” You surprise Lucy at her desk by dropping a bag of food in front of her.

“Y/n,” Lucy smiles up at you. “What are you doing here?”

“I wanted to bring you lunch,” You shrug, leaning down to give her a kiss. “And I can’t lie, you in your uniform..”

Lucy’s cheeks flush and she looks down for a second to compose herself. You weren’t sure if it was from the comment, the kiss, or both. But either way it was cute.

“Right back at you,” Lucy looks you up and down.

“Do you want to go somewhere else to eat? I only have an hour,” You stand with a hand on your hip, patiently waiting for your girlfriend to stand.

“Yes,” She nods and pushes her hands off her desk to stand. “Let’s go to the break room.”

You pick the bag of food up and she puts her hand on the small of your back to lead you to a break room where you won’t be bothered as much.

John watches this interaction and is struck with confusion. He shuts the file he is holding and sits it back on Angela’s desk.

“Did she— what just— huh?” John shakes his head, still trying to wrap his mind around the fact that Lucy is in a relationship - with a woman.

“Yep,” Angela nods. “She did.”

“Oh, she’s good,” Nyla shakes her head. “She kept something like that from everyone, much less two of the best detectives. She’s good.”

“How did she hide this?” Tim stands with his hand on his belt. “I know I don’t talk about my personal life, but she sure does. She had to have said something about this at one point.”

John asks, his face still shocked. “She always spills when she is holding a secret for someone.. so how did she hide this?”

“I have absolutely no idea,” Angela says. “But this is why she makes a great UC.”

All four of them continue to stare at the hallway they disappeared down only moments ago.

“You know everyone’s probably gossiping about us now, right?” Lucy looked around the room nervously.

“Oh well,” You shrugged casually. “That just means we’ll be out. And you can make your appearance at the fire station.”

Lucy smiles softly, catching your lips in a small kiss.

“And that double date you and Bailey are always talking about,” Lucy bites her bottom lip. “We can finally have it.”

“Bailey knows?!” John shrieks from the doorway. Angela, Tim, and Nyla are standing idly behind him.

You chuckle, locking eyes with John after Lucy moves to stand beside you.

“John Nolan,” You step forward, handing your hand out. “I’m sure we’ve met before.”

John shakes your hand in disbelief, “I think we have. I recognize you. Y/n.. right? Bailey talks about you all the time.”

“Yeah, Bails is a real good friend of mine.”

“Chen, are you gonna introduce the rest of us to your secret?” Tim raises his brows half-serious, half-jokingly.

Lucy smirks, “Tim, Angela, Nyla, this is my girlfriend, Y/n. She’s a firefighter.”

You wave, “I know who all of you are.”

“We should.. leave them now,” Angela says. “This was their idea by the way.”

Lucy laughs as they leave and sits beside you around the circle table.

“A fun bunch,” You note.

“Oh yes,” Lucy agrees sarcastically.

yes, i do think lucy has fault in their relationship breakdown - happy to talk about that elsewhere if you want

okay, so @to-the-east asked me to expand on this thought from my other post and while i know this is an unpopular opinion on a beloved character, i don’t mind talking about it (even if it’s become a really polarizing thing for the rookie fandom). the fact that lucy's flaws get looked over in favor of constant praise for her actions is kind of odd to me.

a note before you see how long this is: this is just my opinion about a tv show, i am allowed to have it just like you are allowed to have yours! if you don't agree with me that is ok i will be fine and so will you. please don't come at me for typing my little essays, if you've been here long enough u know i just like to yap.

also just to be clear: i think lucy's a great character. i think she's good at her job. she deserves happiness personally and professionally in whatever way that looks like for her. i also, however, recognize that as a three-dimensional character, lucy's flawed - and i like that she's flawed. i want the show to delve further into those flaws the way they do with basically every other character rather than pretending they're not there. me saying lucy has flaws is not an attack on her character. it is observation and analysis of the source material. that is all.

ok now you may proceed if you want lol

some chenford fans looked at the breakup in season six and saw tim’s issues, tim’s faults, tim’s lies, etc. as the root cause - and they were absolutely part of the cause, but there were bigger things at play than just what was happening in the moment. tim’s knee-jerk reaction to his deception/inability to see himself in his actions/breach of his moral code during 6x06 was to break up with lucy, because he didn’t know who he was. he couldn’t trust himself with himself, so he certainly couldn’t trust himself with her. we’ve all heard this a hundred times over, i’m sure, but it’s worth repeating because i actually think the breakup happening like this did a major disservice to the characters. while i wanted a breakup, after sitting with the way it’s played out, this breakup didn’t scratch the itch for me, so to speak.

throughout the end of season 5 and the beginning of season 6, tim and lucy both wind up facing a major shift in their lives. they decide to be together in 5x08/5x09, and this is where we begin to see the…lack of consequences, more or less, for lucy’s actions specifically.

just to reiterate, because i'm about to sound harsh: i want lucy to succeed, and i want her to grow. i am not trying to say lucy should have to face consequences for things while others shouldn’t - this isn’t meant to be a comparison to anyone else in the cast, but an analysis of what we’ve seen laid out in front of us.

throughout the show’s run, lucy’s had fairly good luck when it comes to not facing disciplinary action when she should’ve - but this goes absolutely batshit crazy in season 5 and 6. in the span of a season, lucy:

breaks up with her boyfriend of at least 6 months who has been expressing interest in living with her, giving little to no reason re: why (regardless of how you feel about chris, this should've have some kind of consequence or challenge attached)

begins dating her superior officer in secret without disclosing that information appropriately despite knowing she is supposed to legally (skirting around rules, ultimately without any consequence)

devises an inter-departmental swap with a group of colleagues in order to find a way to benefit her personal life without consulting tim, who this would directly impact (she does eventually face a professional consequence for this, but not a personal one)

expresses no remorse to tim when she gets caught and he is, rightfully, irritated (she quite literally says “sorry, not sorry”)

learns that someone within the inter-departmental swap is not happy that she’s manipulated a bunch of people for her personal gain and doesn’t seem to understand this is a problem (again, she will eventually face a consequence with this - but does not appear to understand why, which is the issue)

continuously appears to understand that her boyfriend, who has baggage surrounding undercover work, is struggling with her decisions but is trying to put on a brave face and doesn’t call him out for a lack of communication (to be clear, this part is very much also on tim - in moments even more so than lucy - but we’ll get to that later)

picks fights with her boyfriend for doing his job/treating her like his colleague when she has directly asked him to do so (i will not be engaging on the discourse surrounding tim's behavior in 6x01 other than to say that lucy asked him to behave like a TO and he did)

pushes her boyfriend again on his stance on undercover work when he’s openly trying to resolve his issues with it in order to keep their relationship stable (6x01/6x02 pre lie detector test is wild)

makes some deeply dangerous and mostly unnecessary calls that put her in extreme danger in order to make herself stand out because she doesn’t feel she’s getting enough recognition at work (lucy getting that dinged up radio as a trophy was sweet but we veer away from the fact that lucy quite literally chose to do something she didn't need to for kudos and could've died because of it - instead, we see her praised and applauded for her efforts without any ounce of "but you didn't have to do all that")

ignores the fact that she knows going into her detective’s exam that one of the proctors is not in favor of her, and then doesn’t anticipate the fact that it will impact her score/opportunities moving forward (again - this is a time where she does face a consequence, but does not anticipate it whatsoever, which i think is part of the problem)

and that’s just the big stuff. lucy consistently doesn’t face consequences for her actions - the detective’s exam thing is probably one of the few times i feel like i’ve seen her actually find herself in a pickle due to something she’s finagled. i love the fact that lucy can be crafty and creative, it’s one of the things i enjoy the most about her character…but a lot of the writing in the last season or so has felt less to me like she’s being crafty or creative, and more like she’s just skirting any legitimate consequences for her actions/ignoring any faults she’s shown as she’s moved through this phase of her career. even when she does have to face her decisions head-on, lucy often winds up trying to justify her behavior rather than admitting she was just...deeply over-achieving, or trying to do something to better her situation. she rarely sees a consequence coming, which is confusing when her character is clearly someone who can analyze situations for others.

with that being said, let’s get to this part: tim and lucy had problems before their breakup, and neither of them wanted to talk about them. think about the back half of season 5 - we see tim struggling with lucy’s uc work, lucy struggling to talk to tim about it or get him to own up to his feelings.

early on in season 6 we see them confront this a little, but it comes to no resolution whatsoever - and while it’s tim’s problem with lucy’s uc work, lucy chooses to act like that’s the only problem in their relationship. in 6x02, tim’s discomfort with uc work is treated like it’s their biggest issue when we as viewers know that there have been multiple times lucy’s just straight up lied to/withheld information from tim, either because she doesn’t think he needs to know or doesn’t want him to be in the know. lucy’s long-preached having great communication skills/knowing that open honest communication (5x18) is the key to her relationship with tim…but she doesn’t actually practice it.

lucy, unfortunately, is a bad communicator who thinks she’s a lot better at sharing her own feelings than she is. lucy is good at facilitating communication for others - it's a major skill of hers - but she's far less in touch with her own self, and we've seen that many times through the course of the show.

seeing her refuse to acknowledge her faults to tim, who she’s supposed to be sharing herself with fully, is a struggle throughout the beginning of season 6 - and so the tension was brewing for chenford when tim’s whole past-life-army-drama came into play.

now, here’s the thing: tim also has some serious baggage that he brings into this relationship (and just being real, in your 30s/beyond who is not bringing baggage into a relationship? i would be offended if they didn’t) and he has his own level of fault. the direct cause of their breakup in 6x06 is a tim thing. he’s not communicative, he’s a people pleaser (this is what i meant when i said we’d get into that later - tim’s people pleasing tendencies, esp in interpersonal relationships, are huge, to the point that he needed to be hooked up to a lie detector to even really grasp that he had issues with lucy going uc. that man gaslights himself into thinking things sometimes, and he’s always going to try to be amenable to the people he loves because he doesn’t want to lose them - which is a big flaw and a big reason why he broke up with lucy, but i digress), and he’s the kind of bitch that self-sabotages. things got difficult and he fucked up and he took himself out of the equation because leaving is easier than getting left - which, honestly, is probably a new feeling for tim.

but. this is about lucy, and the fault she has in the breakdown of their relationship. to be clear: they share fault. they are very much both at fault for the breakdown of their relationship (again - the direct break up was tim’s call, but we’re talking about what led to that), and i don’t think either of them grasps it just yet.

lucy has become used to getting her way more often than not (not all the time, obv, but enough) and if she doesn’t get her way directly, she can usually find a path into what she wants without much consequence. she doesn’t speak directly about her feelings or find herself probing for the feelings of others in tough situations where she’s directly involved. it's a strange dichotomy for lucy, who comes from such a psychology heavy background - and i often think it's one of the most interesting parts of her character, but the way she's been written in the last season and a half has really brought to light how misused it feels as a trait when she doesn’t see it.

so, tl;dr: lucy has flaws in her communication style and often finds herself lucky enough not to face the consequences of her actions, so when they do crop up at times, she's gutted by them. her chronic over-achieving has become her fatal flaw, as she's often trying to overdo things to make herself look good, rather than taking a step back to actually consider situations. while we can see these things on screen, they’re not addressed by the show which can be frustrating.

these qualities of lucy’s wrapped up in a bow make for her own set of issues that lent directly to the slew of issues that simmered into a boil of a breakup for chenford. while i don't think lucy was the whole problem by any means, i'm also not going to put that fully on tim. i want lucy to be able to grow and change and receive recognition for her work in a meaningful way, but without actually focusing on her flaws and acknowledging them, i don't really see how the rookie can do that in a way that serves the character.

| ANATOMY OF A SCENE - CHENFORD EDITION 2.08 - Clean Cut

Going back to these early moments is always fascinating… To see how far they've come… How Tim was already struggling so much with keeping his wall, pretending to be annoyed with Lucy's antics, but failing miserably. Like when she takes advantage of the situation by taking so many pictures of him, using Rachel as an excuse to get away with it. He may try to use threats as a deterrent but his tone is much softer than usual. Even his grumpiness is quickly replaced by amusement. Especially once Lucy pulls one over him, by making him her lock screen instead of her home screen, finding a loophole. A simple way of showing how comfortable she is around him at this point. His jaw clench… His little smile, so bashful… How he's trying to hide it by lowering his head - not that he's fooling anyone. And this is a good way to get back at him for making those TShirts after he caught her sleeping during their night shift. And he knows it… Most importantly, he absolutely loves that she can give as good as she gets. That she isn't afraid of him and sees right through him. He may not be able to verbalise it but it is important to him. Just like it means a lot to him that she made sure he would get his award.

Or 'this stupid plaque' as he says… And that's truly a Tim Bradford thing, to downplay his own achievements. But this is someone who takes pride in his job, who actually probably found comfort in it when his personal life was falling apart. So for all his protests, deep down, it's clear that he is touched to receive it. Just like he is touched that Lucy fought so hard to clear his name and had his back the whole time. Again. Just like he had hers during her Plain Clothes Day for instance. And this leads us to this sweet moment between them, with Lucy repeating his own words from Redwood back to him… 'For what? Doing my job?'… This was really the moment where Tim showed her his softer side. Where he helped ground her. That was a turning point in their relationship, which makes her choice of words so meaningful. She is a quick learner. The way her eyes twinkles when she says them… Her smug smile… She is absolutely enjoying herself. But here's the thing : she did more than just her job. Again. She didn't hesitate to go toe to toe with a superior officer (again!), regardless of the consequences for her. As a rookie, her position is precarious but that has never stopped her. She has had Tim's back from the very beginning, looking out for him. This goes far beyond than merely doing her job.

Then again, those are the same idiots who practice kissing for 'work'… And who apparently have no understanding of the concept of personal space… In front of their colleagues. Like I said, going back to these early moments is always fascinating… To see how far they've come… And to see how some things haven't changed at all. How they've always used 'work' as a way to express their feelings without realising it.

I was just rewatching dosed (im rewatching random eps) and well the intro of og tk in this ep made me think a lot of fake tk (lol not sorry) and the fact that they are both presented as "enemies" of the 118, or well not liked by bucks family... and i think you already talked about this (and tim said it was by chance because lucys actress couldnt come back-) but it made me think of how conscious the writers are in terms of they put buck once again with someone who hurt his family... idk it made me think, like the way bobby was instantly wary of her to say the least... like its lit more or less the same formula (obv different cause one of them is lit racist and mysoginist) but in the sense that they are presented as enemies then they are more or less accepted as time pass but never part of the family. I guess my question is do you see a patern? And do you see how this could parallel to bt break up?

I'm sorry, you're asking me if I see the bucktaylor parallels??? I've been screaming about them since Tommy was reintroduced. I have a set about it. People hate me for it. The bt 2.0 breakup paralleling bt 1.0 would be done for me specifically. It would be the show's gift to me. It would be Tim Minear looking me in the eye and telling me he's sorry for this hell I'm in. Sorry, I'm passionate about this particular angle lol. (Tommy actually parallels all of Buck's love interests, sets on that here)

Anyway... Do I see how this could parallel the bt 2.0 breakup? Yes, considering the Taylor breakup is about Taylor proving she has not changed while involved with the original thing that makes us, the audience, dislike her aka using Buck's family to get ahead, the fact that Gerrard is back and Tommy was complicit to his behavior, could very much be the thing that breaks them, because, well, it's right there, and to show Tommy's true colors while Buck struggles with the fact that he's not sure if he wanted to hurt him or not, is a very simple way to make that happen. Tommy is introduced as an antagonist of sorts and the thing that makes us dislike him is because he is complicit to the toxicity of the 118 at the time, it would really easy to have him tell Buck to just enjoy it and go along with it. I've been toying with the idea of Tommy saying something like that while maybe adding "it's not like Bobby is coming back" since the whole thing with family and the jealousy came up more than once, but I don't know how that would work. I think a core part of the way the bucktaylor breakup happens is the way that Taylor is hurting someone he loves, he could live with her hurting him, with her not fully getting him, with them hurting each other, he can't live with her hurting his family, and that could come into play again with Tommy, I feel like Buck is willing to let things go if they only affect him, but if he finds out something about his family being hurt, he won't stand by it.

Happy Friday everyone! Doing today cause I shall be doing 5x01 On Sunday like I mentioned before to not be posting on Christmas. :) Holy crap we’re on the S4 finale. I remember when I watching it when it premiered thinking is this real life? Thought I was in a fever dream haha Made some long gifs to fit everything in LOL This one is super packed also this ep doesn’t need much more of an intro. So let’s get this party started.

4x22 Day in The Hole

Our fav patch work family gets the cold open. This moment truly is Tim and Lucy in mom/dad mode. Makes me so damn happy. Tim complaining because Tamara is late to meet them. Moaning on and on saying they have to go... but makes no effort to actually move or leave. Because the both of them have Tim wrapped around their finger. That man isn't moving but will complain the whole time about it LOL Lucy going into wifey mode calming him down saying she’ll be here. Relax. ha

Tamara pulls in and almost hits someone. In a police station parking lot... Their reactions I’m dying. Just a couple of concerned parents watching their kid almost cause an accident. Lucy is a proud mom as she pulls up. Clapping her hands. Tim looking like the stern father. He glares at the car wanting to see if this car is safe enough for her. This is a glimpse into them as parents. I’m liking what I see. Also can I say how cute it is Lucy wants Tim to look at her car in first place. Of course he said yes.

Tamara comes out and says isn’t she pretty? Saying it’s her first car. Lucy correcting her saying actually her car was her first. Tamara makes a joke about it being her fifth if they’re talking stolen. Tim has such a dad moment. ‘What?’ She loves to push their buttons it’s hilarious. Telling Tim it's a joke. Just loves messing with her pseudo mom and dad. Lives for it really. This is a fantastic way to start this episode off.

The family energy in this scene giving me all the feels. Lucy telling her to get it checked by the mechanic first. That you never know what cars from seized police auction go through. Tamara says Tim set her up with his guy already. Lucy is beaming about this. Says ‘Awww you do have a heart.’ ha Tim can't be seen as soft so he deflects.

But you are soft for both your girls Tim…This much is obvious ha You're a soft little puppy for them. I mean it's only for them but a marshmallow none the less. His reply is sassy af. Saying it’s purely out of self interest. He didn’t want to deal with Lucy being a drag with her dying in a mangled fireball of metal on the 405. The scoff/look Tamara shoots his way is hilarious. Tim fires back ‘Joke.’

Like Father like daughter and I’m dying with the cuteness in this cold open. Also Tim mirroring her posture from when she said 'Joke' to him. LMAO Unfortunately a drug sniffing dog starts barking at the car. Tim opens the hatch back and searches it. Find kilos of drugs hidden in the compartment. Tamara looks so sad. ‘I’m not getting my car back am I?’ Hahaha Sorry my dear you are definitely not…

Lucy looks up who the car is registered to. It's ‘Jake Butler.’ Lucy pulls up his mug shot and is confused as hell. Ahhhh the beginning of Dim it’s glorious. They pick up his doppelgänger and it's pretty amusing. Didn’t have room for that portion but his ‘Yo, why you looking like me?’ LOL Kills me. They get him into interrogation and the girls are having a field day with it. Enjoying Tim's discomfort so very much. Tim isn’t about this whatsoever of course.

Lucy says maybe they were separated at birth? Tim replies he’s a year older than him and was born in FL. You can see how unsettling he finds this. Tim tries to brush this off. Saying he doesn’t look that much like him. Ok honey… Angela saying he’s not the brightest bulb. Lucy gets excited and says ‘Tim and Dim’ LMAO Enjoying herself far too much with this. Angela and Nyla are joining in on it laughing with her. They aren't helping tamp down her excitement about this at all.

Tim calling Jake 'Dim' is hilarious. Lucy's face when he does is too cute. Also It cracks me up the minute they enter interrogation Dim hits on Lucy. Doesn't waste any time. I’m dying. Also you know Melissa and Eric had a blast filming these scenes. They’re so funny. The cockiness on Dim saying she would remember ha! Man isn’t lacking in the confidence department that's for sure. They tell him they found his car. He gets all excited saying someone stole it LOL

They inform him it was towed cause he parked by a hydrant haha Tim confronts him about the drugs in the car and Dim denies having it. Because of course he does. His fingerprints are all over the bags. Tim says he helps them and they’ll keep him out of prison. Dim gets offended and says he thought they had a bond ha.

Lucy asks where the drugs came from? He tells them Mexico that he was supposed to drive them over the border. But then he wanted to see his girl first before he dropped them off. I.e. Juicy heh When he came back out the car was gone. Tim asks for the name of the guy they were going to. He tells them Ray Hajek. Lucy gets a look in her eye and asks if his crew ever met him? He tells them no but why? We watch Lucy light up and Tim is confused why she is so excited haha

It’s here we see Lucy’s excitement go into hyperdrive. I love this portion because she is like a kid in a candy store with this. The sugary high to go along with it LOL Grey and Angela are no help to Tim whatsoever. They are beyond amused by Lucy’s antics. Like to note how easily Tim gives into Lucy’s demands here btw. You're married you just don’t know it yet.

Once he agrees Lucy gets ultra hyper which has me cackling. I love how she stops him with her hands. Because she’s too excited to walk now. Saying all the things they need to do to get him to look like Dim. Tim pointing out she is enjoying this way too much. Duh. I love her excited speed walk to catch up to him and say he needs tattoos. Lucy was a little too excited for those tats heh She sure loves the idea of a clean cut Tim Bradford covered in tattoos.

We pan to Lucy being on the team watching Tim’s OP. Part of the rescue team if needed. Kinda nice to see her on the watching end instead of him. Being just as much the worried wifey as he is the husband for her when she does UC. He gets taken up to the boss and does a damn good job of it. They’re pissed at him first because he disappeared with their drugs. Tim saying he went to ground because he didn’t want to get caught. Trying to avoid jamming him up.

He then asks why Wisco his heavy shouldn’t throw him over the balcony? We watch Lucy and Angela tense up. Tim has this handled with his reply above though. He is shocked with his intelligent reply. Saying he heard he was dumb. Tim continues on saying he wants people to think he’s dumb. Means they underestimate him.

That answer is enough for him. Tell Tim get his cash on way out. Or he could do another job for him and triple it. Tim asks what kind of job? He won’t divulge that portion just yet. Only that it’s heavy and tomorrow. They’ll need a driver. They heard his old lady is fast. Tim makes a crack 'Sometimes too fast.' He laughs and tells him they’ll be in touch with him.

Angela catches Lucy and tells her she had Dim’s GF picked up. Lucy is like 'Ok…Wait why are you being weird?' Angela says she needs to see for herself. She is enjoying this far too much. It’s Juicy! Haha Having AU Tim and Lucy makes my soul happy ahahah Now Tim is the one enjoying himself. Lucy is in shock when she sees her doppelgänger. Angela adding in ‘I guess we know who’s going undercover with Dim.’

Tim’s taunting is funny I’m rolling. ‘Yeah Juicy.’ ‘No’ ‘Mmhmm It’s Juicy’ LOL I’m dying this is so hilarious. Not so funny when it’s your double eh Lucy? Also you know Angela was enjoying this way too much as well. Lucy’s ‘I don’t like that…’ cracks me up. She is so disturbed by having her own double. She was having fun before and now she doesn't like it. Also probably stirring some stuff up there is an AU version of them out there. Not only that but they're together.

We’ve arrived at THE scene for the episode. Tim is over at Lucy’s for OP prep. Saying the backstory has to be airtight. Lucy agrees with him and asks how they met? Tim's answer of a BBQ is vanilla as it gets. This is why she’s the UC babe LOL Lucy telling him that’s lame. I love her just being so upfront with him. She always is but there is a confidence here I love. This is her wheelhouse and Tim is just along for the ride. This is her show really and she proves that in this scene.

Tim is such a stubborn turd saying ‘You think you can do better?’ Oh Timothy you’re about to have your mind blown and your brain broken…She starts out strong saying ‘Watch me.’ Lucy rubs her hands together. Saying they met because he was on the run from the cops. Tim nodding along but not totally sold yet. Lucy continues on with he ended up in her building frantic.Looking for a place to hide.

That she was the one who opened up the door for him. That she lied to the cops for him. It's here we see Tim starts to be impressed with her backstory. That sweet smirk of his in the second gif. You know he is in awe of her right now. That smirk and head tilt is a dead giveaway. Look at how soft he looks gazing at her. Fooling no one sir.

Lucy’s confidence continues as she finishes up their backstory. It's the smug smile and direct eye contact she gives him as she delivers that line above that gets me. I watch this scene and I’m still in shock we got it. That Lucy is talking about their alter egos hooking up while the cops search for him. Thus his brain malfunctioning. Tim’s reaction is glorious. It will always make me laugh no matter how many times I see it.

Kudos to Eric for crushing it like he always does. Lucy short circuited his brain and it shows. He is having an repeated error message and failing to reboot. You can tell he’s trying to hide the fact she turned him on a little. She achieved this with her confidence through out the story and just blowing his mind right at the end. The man will never recover. He is legit speechless.

Tim was not expecting her to go there at all. She floored him while simultaneously turning him on LOL His professional brain came to a screeching halt when she finished. Also I'm sure he wasn't expecting to be turned on by just her words either. His body was not ready for such things. Good thing he’s sitting cause I’m sure his pants just got a little tighter….

Tim then remembers he has to reply to her plan now haha Trying to gain his wits about him. Telling her ‘Ok….that..that's pretty good actually.’ Pretty good? She just blew your backstory out of the water. Then proceeded to make your brain stop working. You know he’s a mixture of turned on and impressed as hell with her. Won’t say so but his face said it all for us didn’t it? He legit had his jaw drop like a cartoon hahaha

Tim is seeing she truly is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to UC holy crap. She is also basking in the fact that she crushed his plan with her own, made him speechless, and then got a compliment out of him. Lucy is feeling pretty proud of herself when she says 'Thank you.' I love seeing this confidence on her. It's a good look. Just like I'll never over Tim's growth same goes for her. To see the confident bad ass woman she is now. How far she's come. I love it seeing it.

Once Tim has some semblance of a brain back he mentions the elephant in the room. That if they’re gonna sell they're together. They’re gonna have to...You know…. Lucy knowing exactly what he’s talking about but giving him a hard time. Trying to get him to say the words. Pretending like she has no idea what he’s talking about. He continues to get flustered and stammers around. Poor Tim. He struggles with his words and stutters. He’s shocked she doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

Lucy is enjoying herself far too much. Look at her face. Letting him dangle and trip over his words. Knowing talking about this is making him so very uncomfortable LOL So mean to do to your soulmate Lucy ha She finally throws him a lifeline and says we might have to PDA? Tim gets frustrated she strung him along and says never mind. Lucy stops him and says he’s right. If they’re going to kiss it shouldn’t be for the first time.

Then the awkwardness that is them pre-kiss ensues. They’re not sure what to do now…So Lucy suggests they stand up. No one does awkward better than these two. They’re so out of their depth right now. It's hysterical. I love a nervous Lucy Chen she is beyond adorable right here. The way Tim starts to lean in and she bails LOL Saying ‘No’ with a nervous giggle ejecting far away from him I’m rolling.

She totally chickens out at first and I don’t blame her. After last episode I'm sure her emotions are going haywire in this moment. Being shy because she already knows of the feelings there. That this was going to bring them out even more. Tim is about to find out himself what this kiss will reveal. Tim is exasperated and not understanding what’s going on here.

He's got a let's do this and get it over with attitude. The thing is Tim is nervous too. Look at him in that first gif. Takes a deep cleansing breath before trying to give her a kiss. He is just as nervous as she is. One thing to banter and flirt with your partner. It's another to kiss them. They’re both buzzing with nerves and it’s adorable af. Hats off to Eric and Melissa in this scene. I can feel all their anxiety and giddiness in this moment. They do an amazing job in this portion.

Tim get frustrated again and says ‘Oh, you know what? We’re professionals. Let’s just get this over with.’ Lucy’s reaction is the best part LOL Telling him 'Whoa! that’s romantic.' His childish reply of saying he wasn’t trying to be romantic LMAO OMG it’s a good thing you’re about to kiss. Because I wanna yell at them to kiss and get a room already.

Their banter is primo in this scene. Legendary really as is this entire scene. We talk about them being married a lot but never more so than before this kiss. Lucy telling him he’s succeeding and he replies with his pouty face. It’s all so hilarious to watch unfold. Lucy’s nervousness continues to shine through. Trying to reset herself as she psyches herself up to kiss him.

Tim never fails in making me laugh with his expressions and reactions. Telling her in an sarcastic tone to ‘Take her time...’ LOL Lucy trying to give herself a pep talk while Tim stands there exasperated af with her. He is so very done at this point. Just waiting her out at this point. Because he’s used to his wife antics. I love his annoyed deep sigh he let outs when she’s ready to rejoin him. The way he swings his arms in impatience lol

Tim finally leans in and gives her the most pitiful peck on the lips. He’s so proud of himself when he pulls back though. It’s pretty damn adorable if you ask me. He is expecting praise from his girl only to be demolished by her. Lucy was definitely expecting way more than what he just delivered. It's almost like she has to hold back a laugh at his lack luster attempt. Also that he thought he did a good job with it. Saying ‘I'm s...Sorry, is that it?' After all that build up just an innocent peck on the lips? Tim is so offended about her critique till she lays one on him. Effectively silencing him with a kiss. Also like to note how I love how this season started with an almost kiss and ends with an actual one. Lovely bookend.

I’ll never be over her cutting him off with her lips and grabbing him by the face. Pulling him forcefully towards her lips. *phew lord* Has his whole face in her hands while she has her way with him. I love how he stumbles into the kiss at first. If you watch him in the beginning of this gif you see him fall forward into the kiss. Wasn’t expecting that show of force from her. He needs a second to readjust his body into what’s now happening. Both of their frustrations with each other melting away once their lips touch. Takes them a moment to find their rhythm. Then it’s all about melding into one another. Fitting like the perfect puzzle pieces they low key always knew they were.

How Lucy’s right hand drops to his chest as she gets comfortable in this kiss. In his arms. Doing what comes naturally while in them. She keeps her left hand firmly on his face though. Keeping those beautiful lips of his directed at her. We watch Tim start to melt into Lucy as well. See how his body begins to relax against hers. His hand has made it's way up to her shoulder. Had this continued I have no doubt they would've swapped places from where they started. His hands continuing their journey upwards. Tim encasing her face in his hands as he continued to kiss her as if his life depended on it.

We see them start to get lost in their kiss. That argument of their's a moment ago is long forgotten. It’s such a sexy first kiss sweet lord. Tim has quickly adjusted from the beginning of the kiss. He's eased into it now and is ready to go for more. We saw him begin startled then quickly relax into her as the kiss goes on. Seems so natural like they've done this before. Reminds me of Chandler and Monica. When Joey/Rachel ask Chandler what he felt when he and Monica kissed after being friends for so long? Telling them felt like 'Why haven't we been doing this the entire time?' This kiss represents that line IMO.

Look at the way he is melting into her as he looks to deepens that kiss. He’s attached to her upper lip. We can see a little tongue too. Don't think I didn't see you slip that in Timothy heh. He is ready to take this further when their pseudo daughter walks in….I love it being Tim who deepened that kiss. Making that all important first move once again. Lucy wasn’t complaining one bit btw. Cracks me up how Tamara's first solution is to go. Let them have more time alone. I'm sure she's thought of them getting together before.

She doesn't seem terribly shocked by this so much as incredibly amused. How could she not with how they are? Then the awkward hilarity begins. I’ll never be over Lucy’s ‘Oh!’ As they fly apart from each other. Both trying to put a continent between them. It’s so damn funny. Went from hot and heavy to insanely embarrassed. The music stopping abruptly as well. Never fails to make me laugh my ass off. There is so much to love after the kiss as there is with it.

The way they scramble to explain why they were making out is priceless. Stumbling over their words and each other. Lucy trying to explain that this is 'Work' Uh huh. Sure let's call it that. Tim adding on they're going UC. Tamara is bemused to say the least. Telling them they don't have to explain themselves to her. Tim then starts looking desperately for items he didn’t bring LOL Then realizing he has nothing to gather up.

'You know what? No. I didn't bring anything...' LMFAO Flustered Tim Bradford is a joy to watch. Lucy already broke his brain earlier and then destroyed it with that kiss. You know he’s in love because that man doesn’t get flustered easily. He legit doesn’t know what to do with himself. Other than awkwardly retreat from Lucy. He is shook and it’s showing big time.

I love that he’s a complete disaster just from kissing Lucy. This entire scene is iconic and makes me so happy to watch. They awkwardly point at one another. For what reason I couldn't tell you. Other than they don't know what to do with themselves right now. The height of nervous awkwardness has arrived and I’m joyful Haha They’re both so embarrassed and flustered it’s glorious.

Lucy is flaming red after she tells Tim 'G...Good work tonight'. She is mortified she just said that to him after they made out. Tim replies in kind because he is also nervously awkward as he leaves. She can’t even look at him as he makes his hasty exit. Her back is turned to him as he departs and does another dorky finger point. Saying bye to Tamara as he does. Lucy's facial expressions are legit killing me. She then she turns around to face Tamara and it only gets worse.

Lucy has no idea what to say to being caught making out with Tim. Tamara's face in that second gif is hilarious. It's like she's giving Lucy a chance to explain herself further. Wanting to see what she'll come up with. She notices Lucy isn't in the right state of mind for answers. So Tamara saves her further embarrassment and says she’s headed to her room…Bless you. Your pseudo mother needed that LOL

We join Tim in the hallway post all of that mess haha. I once again must commend Eric and his wonderful expressions. He conveys so very much in this moment. It’s the range of emotions he expresses that is so impressive. He just nails it. This is the moment where Tim realizes his feelings for Lucy. Yes she short circuited his brain 100 percent here. But there is far more to this expression than that.

4x21 was Lucy’s epiphany episode. This is Tim’s 'Oh shit I’m in love with Lucy' moment. It’s like he finally has the answer to why he’s always felt the way he’s felt. Why he fought so hard for her not to wash out. Why he said and did things he didn’t totally understand for her. Explaining why he was so protective with her in UC. Why he was ALWAYS happier around her. Just like Lucy it’s hitting him like freight train. His feelings coming sharply into focus.

He goes from broken brain, to realization he’s in love with her, to oh shit I’m in love with my best friend...what am I going to do? The way his eye bug out a little as he comes to this conclusion is everything. That kiss cleared the skies in his brain. He can see clearly now and it scaring him a little. Everything was muddled before and now it’s clear as day. He looks back at her door before he is able to unroot himself from that spot. Tim Bradford is in love with Lucy Chen and it’s just hitting him ❤️

The awkward cuteness continues the next day. Tim is sitting in his truck with his thoughts. Probably having an existential crisis in the process tbh. I bet you he didn't sleep a wink last night either. Probably trapped in his thoughts the entire time. Also he is clearly just waiting for Lucy to appear. Which is pretty damn adorable.

He perks right up when she arrives. Makes me heart so happy actually. Giving me all the feels. He is so adorable waiting on the girl he loves so he can talk to her. They’re both so smitten at this point my heart is gonna implode. She spots him waiting in his truck. Then does her adorkable wave at him when he notices her looking at him. It's so cute I cannot. They’re both so nervous it’s beyond precious.

First off love them matching in colors. I feel this was intentional both being in light blue. Once they reach each other the air is rife with unresolved tension. They cut each other off both wanting to speak. Lucy tells him to go first. You can see Tim desperately wants to clear the air. Be vulnerable about the kiss. We see the hope on Lucy’s face as he struggles to find the words. That he is going to say that kiss unlocked something, that it was more than just a practice kiss etc.

That does seem where he is headed when he started this convo. Then our boy loses his nerve completely. Says they should work more on their backstory …You can see the sheer disappointment on Lucy’s face that he said that instead. Probably wishing she had gone first and not him. It’s ok Tim you’ll gain the courage in 5x08 don’t worry. My little awko tacos. How I love thee.

Phew lord that was daunting to write about and tackle haha The sheer volume of gifs out there for this one are immense. But damn I love their slow burn so very much and adore writing about it. Can’t believe we’re done with s4 what a trip.

I think Tim doesn't know. First, because we all know how jealous and obnoxious he can be and even though it might make Lucy and everyone else laugh, she doesn't want work to become a warzone you know?

The other reason why I think he doesn't know is because Lucy and John moved on so greatly that sometimes even they forgot they used to date. He became a friend, almost a brother (in arms at least) and there is NO FREAKING WAY she could see him like this again, same for him. Maybe one day someone will find a picture of them or whatever and they'll be "oh right! Lmao forgot about it anyway who wants coffee?"

But if Tim one day learns about it I don't think he'll react well to be fair. Lucy knows everything about Isabel and was involved a lot in their relationship so it wouldn't feel fair to him not to have the same trust from his girlfriend (breakup? What breakup?). He might also be sooooooooo insufferable with John, not telling him he knows and pushing him to confess through manipulation. Grumpy Tim?? Oh hell yes.

He wouldn't feel frightened to lose her because he knows he's so much better than John (and John is married, and anyway Lucy is HIS). He might ask himself questions as to why Lucy likes older men, and if he looks as old as John???? 🥲🥲

Summary: You want to ask Tim to be your date to a Christmas party, but he's going with another woman. When you're caught under the mistletoe together, you give Tim more than a present.

Warnings/Word Count: fluff, brief angst. 1.2k+ words

“Tim!” you call as you exit the locker room. When he stops and turns toward you, you smile and ask, “Can we talk?”

Tim begins to nod but is interrupted by Angela reminding everyone of the Evers-Lopez Christmas party tonight. As she tells the surrounding officers about the gift exchange, food, and fun she and Wesley have planned, your eyes stray to Tim. It has taken over a week to convince yourself it isn’t a terrible idea, and now you’re ready to ask Tim to go with you to the party. Your fingers tap nervously against your hip, though you’re oblivious to Tim’s repeated glances at you.

“Who’s bringing a date?” Angela inquires. “I need to make sure we have enough food.”

“And mistletoe?” Nyla guesses.

“I don’t even know what that is,” Angela deflects. “Dates? Timothy?”

“Yeah, I’m bringing someone,” Tim answers.

Angela’s jaw drops as you and everyone else swing your head to look wide-eyed at him. She had been kidding when she called him out specifically and certainly didn’t expect him to say he had a date. Tim says her name and where they met, but you can’t hear anything over your heart pounding and a week’s worth of doubts swirling.

“You said you wanted to talk?” Tim remembers as the surprise diminishes and people begin leaving the station.

“Yeah…” you answer. “It can wait, though. Enjoy your date.”

You could’ve still asked him or told him the truth of what you wanted to talk about, but it’s easier this way. You’ll be at the same party. Tim with his date and you with what’s left of your Christmas cheer and a heart crushed like peppermint.

Tucked into a corner with one of Lucy’s Christmas cookies, you watch the party from a safe distance. Tim’s date is gorgeous, as you expected, and you fight to keep your attention away from them.

“Hey,” Lucy greets as she approaches your safe haven. You send her a close-lipped smile, and she lays her hand on your shoulder. “What’s up?”

“Nothing worth talking about,” you say. “These cookies are amazing by the way. Peppery ginger snaps, who knew?”

“My aunt. But, seriously, if you decide you want to talk, you know where to find me.”

“I do. Go enjoy the party.”

“As long as you do, too. I’m getting your gift during Dirty Santa and if Tim even thinks about stealing it, I’ll tell Angela about his bad attitude last week.”

“I think I’d like to see that.”

Lucy sends you a heart with her hands, and you finish the last bite of your cookie. Walking through Angela’s house to either get another or throw away your plate (you’ll decide when you get there), you keep your eyes down until your shoulder bumps into someone.

“I’m sorry,” you apologize, looking up.

“You’re on a mission,” Tim muses. “There’s no more cookies, but if you’re nice to Nyla, she might tell you where she’s hiding them.”

“I could just get something else,” you murmur, thinking it would be easier to get someone else, but you want Tim.

“Uh, guys?” Nolan interrupts. “You’re under the mistletoe.”

Tim tips his head back and spots the green leaves hanging sneakily above a doorframe. You shake your head at Nolan, but he waves Angela over despite your protests.

“It’s tradition!” she argues. “You have to!”

“Yes!” Lucy agrees when she realizes where you are. “Kiss!”

Several of your friends cheer, and you shake your head again.

“Don’t be such a Scrooge!” Lucy tells Tim.

“I knew you were going to say that,” Tim complains.

“Tim, you’re here with a date,” you remind him softly.

Tim clicks his tongue, then raises his hands to the sides of your neck and jaw. “We have no choice,” he points out.

You let your eyes flutter shut as you lean in and kiss Tim. The noise of the party fades as you grip Tim’s waist and move with him. When Tim pulls back, you notice that the crowd beside you has dissipated.

“Where’s, uh…” you begin.

“My date?” Tim guesses with a barely contained smile.

“Yeah.”

“She left ten minutes in, decided this wasn’t her scene – her words.”

“How is a Christmas party not someone’s scene?”

Tim shrugs, and you apologize for his bad date.

“It worked out,” Tim replies.

“Gift time!” Angela yells from the living room.

You find a place on a small loveseat by Tim and watch as the white elephant gift exchange begins. After the moment beneath the mistletoe, a feeling of magic lingers within you. You must tell Tim about your feelings for this to go beyond Christmas.

“Don’t get attached to that,” Nolan says as Wesley opens an expensive tool set.

Laying your head on Tim’s shoulder, you don’t feel him freeze beneath you. He watches you laugh with his friends, content in an environment – his environment – when his date couldn’t even tolerate walking past the cookie table. As Tim relaxes, welcoming you into his space, and feels the same warmness he had while kissing you, he unknowingly gives you his heart. You give him yours in return, and it’s the best gift exchange you’ve ever participated in.

Lucy opens your gift and squeals before tucking it under her sweater.

“I’m stealing that, so make it a little easier to get to,” Tim warns her.

“No!” Lucy exclaims. “Angela, Tim yelled at me last week.”

“She can’t save you now,” Tim tells Lucy. “I need that one.”

“Why?” Angela asks, raising her eyebrows as she glances toward you.

“You’re a detective, Lopez, figure it out.”

“Let me give you a ride home?” Tim asks in your ear.

You nod and accept his hand as you stand. After receiving hugs and gifts from a few friends, you follow Tim outside, and a soft white powder falls from above to greet you.

“Is that what I think it is?” Tim whispers.

Extending your hand, you catch some on your fingers and raise it to your nose. “Only if you think it’s powdered sugar.”

“Chen!” Tim barks. “What are you doing?”

“What?” Lucy asks from behind him. “Is that snow?”

“It’s close enough!” Nyla answers.

“Nyla?” you ask, stepping out into the powdered sugar snow. “Wade?!”

Tim follows you onto the walkway. His eyes widen when he sees his watch commander perched on the roof and spreading fake snow through a sieve.

“Act like I’m not here,” James adds, pouring more sugar into his shaker.

Nyla rolls her eyes and looks at Tim to demand, “Just kiss her again and put us out of our misery before New Year’s.”

You don’t have time to question her command before Tim pulls you in. The door clicks closed as you taste the powdered sugar on Tim’s lips, and you smile against him as the fine confectioner’s treat covers your clothing.

“I was going to ask you to come with me,” you admit, leaning your forehead against Tim’s as his arms wrap around your waist. “Like a date.”

“Raincheck for New Year’s Eve?” Tim suggests.

“Will it be like this?”

“I hope not.”

Nyla scoffs, but you kiss Tim in the makeshift winter wonderland rather than replying. You have been in love with Tim Bradford for longer than the duration of this party, but learning that he loves you too is a Christmas present that will never be topped.

Everyone's been mentioning how the characters have been more in character and the actors are happy and that makes sense.

He's been making them more in character than they ever were.

And with the Buddie situation (yes not everything is about them but i am a buddie fan who happened to find and grow to love this show because of it) it makes the most sense.

Now that Oliver mentioned the love story and everyone assumed it was the shooting and being in live it made the most sense.

Who else was he going to be falling in love woth at the time? It surely wasn't Taylor. Their romantic relationship was always doomed to fail and it was a great friendship they had (ehhh sideye for Bobby situation and Jonah eventually) that lasted if they weren't too persnally involved in each others lives.

She'd have been a perfect friend for him to gossip about the drama at the 118 (not work cause you know she'd make a story). That relationship wasn't going to work. He's too honest and she's too opportunisic.

If it hadn't been Jonah it'd be something else and he'd feel the same sense of betrayal (also Buck kissing Lucy was betrayal but that also felt a lil like assult cause she got him reallllly drunk and if the roles were reversed people wouldn't be that enthusiastic about it).

The only other love story that's been written logically as a will they won't they tragic and emotionally complex story is Buck and Eddie's.

Season 2 he replaced his love intrest! Like come on!

But in all seriousness, the Ana breakup and ll the vague dollow your heart is basically being rehashed.

I remember someone mentioning that Marisol is just another Ana (whoever you are if you see this send me hit I'll put it in here) and that's actually true.

Yay Marisol no last name haters your time has arrived cause it's official she's done!

There's no worry because we're getting a conclusion on the fact that was supposed to happen years ago.

She's not a permanent structure.

This storyline can go two ways.

One Buddie confirmed season 8.

Or two, Eddie realizes what his family could look like and its a single parent home with a support system from work (and Buck but we're gonna just gloss over that for now).

Meta linked above I just talked about Eddie and its coming to fruition (hire me abc im getting better at screenwriting!).

For the first one it's juicy storytelling.

For the other it makes sense as development for Eddie becoming comfortable with himself apart from his identity as a husband/widower, son, Catholic, and father.

He'll learn to bebhimself which he hadn't had the opportunity to do as he had fell into adulthood with his kid and then added on having a child with a disability that needs a lot of monetary support he ended up losing the chance to figure out who he is without all of that.

Even if it's not romantic (😔) it's great for him to realize he doesn't really need to be with anyone or fulfill a role he's not ready or willing to fill due to duty.

He can just be a father and work it iut that way.

Chris only wants his dad happy and I sense he knows his dad isn't happy at times or even worse he's not happy but is pretending so that his dad can be happy as he feels he has to give him that space/approval.

Chris is getting a storyline and he's always been observant so he'll most likely either explode in his feelings and tell his dad or tell him in a misunderstanding (he is getting to be a moody teen after all it's not going to be an adult reaction).

He's been close to death, heard his dad lose it and loat his mom. He's more mature than people give him credit for but the story hadn't included him much recently so we'll just have to see.

In Lucy’s defense, it’s late, and she’s exhausted after her first three intensive weeks in UC school, and she’s had more than a couple margaritas. There is also the fact that Noah is one of the very very few classmates that hasn’t tried to hit on her, even if he did nickname her Hot Pants after the third class due to an incident that is never to be discussed again. 

It’s been a long while since Lucy’s had a friend like this. Not an almost-sibling, like Tamara, or a rookie like Aaron or Selina, or an older and cooler person to look up to like Angela or Nyla. Other than Nolan, who is twenty years her elder and currently too head over heels with his gorgeous fianceé to spend much time with her... it’s been years since Lucy has had a true and close friend. Not since Jackson. 

So when Noah leans in, across the tiny table at the shitty bar they’ve claimed as their own, and says “Everyone here is running from something, or someone. What’s your story, Hot Pants?” She gives in to the impulse (and the margaritas). 

“My TO. Well, my former TO.”

“Pain in the ass?”

“Yes,” she laughs. “But that’s not it.”

Noah arches his eyebrows and waits for her to continue. He’s a good listener like that. He reminds her of her lost friend so much...

“It’s just... Look, he’s a good person. He’s actually very sweet, deep down, once you get past all the tough guy act. We’ve actually gotten pretty close. That’s... that’s kinda the problem.”

Noah’s brow furrows and she knows what he’s thinking ever before he says: 

“He hitting on you.”

“No!” She jumps. “Well, maybe. Sort of. Not really. I don’t know, that’s the problem.”

Silence and a head tilt prompt her to continue, to say out loud the one thing she’s been terrified of admitting. 

“I might be in love with him.”

Which is a problem, because she has a boyfriend. Because he has a girlfriend. Because this could really mess everything up. 

“It’s... it’s not like I didn’t know. I mean, I kinda did. Deep down. But we went undercover a few weeks ago and things got...”

“Intimate?”

“Yes!”

Noah laughs. 

“That happens. You just gotta shake it off.”

Lucy shakes her head, frustrated. 

“It wasn’t just the physical thing. I mean, it was. We kissed once for practice and suddenly it was like... like all these things I’d been keeping inside of me wanted to burst out. And... and I think he felt it too. And then during the mission it was just... just so much. And he suddenly said it didn’t feel like pretend and all I could think about was ‘he knows’ and how I would lose him for good because there is no way he will cross that line. He’s too by-the-book for that. So I...”

“You ran.”

“He sort of encouraged me to come here. I guess he just thought putting some space and time between us would be better.”

The sadness she’s been carrying around weights heavy on her as she admits it out loud. She blinks back tears and curses the alcohol for this unforeseen vulnerability. She wants to be taken seriously here, not to play the broken-hearted girl in love with someone who will never love her back. 

“What’s his name?” Noah asks. 

“Bradford. Tim Bradford.”

I’m in love with Tim Bradford, she admits to herself. Fuck.

“Well, if he let you go, I assume he’s an idiot,” Noah nods, matter-of-factly. 

“He’s not. He really isn’t,” she jumps to Tim’s defense instinctually. 

She finally dares to look up, and finds Noah’s eyes, steady and honest and surprisingly kind for someone who can play-pretend to be the coldest and cruelest kind of man if the situation demands it. Right now, he’s just warm. She likes him. She likes having this kind of friend again. 

“Then, maybe... maybe he’ll get his act together and realize he’d be an idiot to let you go.”

Lucy laughs, and cleans a tear before it can roll down her cheek. 

“Yeah... in my dreams, maybe.”

“Dreams are all we’ve got, Hot Pants. Dreams, and margaritas.”

“Now you’re talking,” she smiles, thankful for the subject change. 

“I’ll get us another round,” Noah says. “And then, you can tell me the full story.”

“Oh, no... that really isn’t necessary.”

But Noah is already gone to get more drinks and as much as Lucy dreads bearing herself open with him, she knows that no harm will come from it. There’s a different kinda trust built between people who lie for a living, when they can only be sincere with each other. And there is absolutely no way that this will ever get to Tim, anyway. So, what’s the harm in sharing?

Welcome back, anon! First off, thanks for sending two rude messages so I can respond to one and use the other to block you 👋

To be clear, the only reason I’m giving this the the time of day is because I think the “man pain” issue is worth addressing.

I’m always open to talking about this show and issues with misogyny, representation, race, etc. Even with people I don’t completely agree with.

What I’m not gonna do is discuss it with someone who can’t converse like a rational adult and finds joy in sending toxic, judgmental anonymous messages, so this little exchange of ours is over after this.

I am so sorry that my feelings about the show don’t line up exactly with what you want them to be. Sounds like you have some pretty strong feelings of your own though, so here’s an idea 💡 : post them on your own blog!

Shockingly, I’m capable of considering that there might be multiple perspectives on specific decisions the show makes. And that more than one of them can be valid at the same time!

I completely get how this could be viewed as growth for Tim at Lucy’s expense. I agree that sucks. I’ve posted multiple times that I will be LIVID if Lucy doesn’t actually end up with any type of storyline of her own or character development resulting from all the shit they put her through, and just ends up as a supporting character in another Tim-centric SL.

But, I can feel that way and also have other opinions all at the same time:

- I am glad they let Tim be the flawed human instead of the victim.

- I’m glad they didn’t villify Lucy in the breakup because god knows how quickly this fandom would tear her to pieces if she ever did to Tim what Tim just did to her.

- After years of Lucy doing barely anything on screen other than the odd UC op and propping up storylines for Tim and Chenford, I’m glad her character is 3-dimensional again both in the relationship and outside of it.

- I am heartbroken over the break up. I can’t watch the scene without bawling my eyes out. I feel nauseous thinking about it. But I am also glad they now have another chance to get it right this time for Chenford. Specifically because I love Lucy. Because I feel like she deserved so much better than what she got the first time.

- I’d love to see Tim value her and fight for her instead of just having her drop everything on a dime for him bc he deigned to look her direction after getting dumped by his girlfriend.

- I’d love to see him deal with all his unresolved baggage and realize what a complete and total idiot he is for throwing away what they had.

- And I’d love to see Lucy [continue to] recognize her own worth and thrive in the meantime. I am SO proud of who she’s been this season. And I hope she becomes even stronger and more sure of herself.

- I hope she recognizes she deserves so much better than what Tim gave her and that his decision has nothing to do with her worth (even if it feels like that at first), and I hope she *demands* better from him before even considering taking him back.

I’m not psychic. I don’t know what they have planned for the rest of the season (and no, I’m not gonna jump to conclusions off of a few vague interviews either). Maybe I’ll love it; maybe I’ll hate it. We’ll see.

Either way, I’m clear that’s it’s still just a TV show and that these are fictional characters. Are you?

“Could you just wait here?” Lucy asked. “I need to go find Lopez and figure out how to go put a curse on someone.”

“Yeah, right,” Chris chuckled before watching her walk away. “Oh, you’re serious.”

Lucy walked hurriedly over to the Detective desks in the bullpen, but didn’t see Angela anywhere in sight. She noticed the computer shut off for the night and dialed her number.

“Angela? Hey, did you already go home for the night?”

“Yeah. But what’s up?”

“Oh, okay.” Lucy was silent for a moment. “It’s not work-related. Is that okay?”

“Of course it is,” Angela answered without missing a beat. “What’s going on?”

“I, uh—I wanted your help putting a curse on Tim.”

Her friend laughed. “Why do you want to put a curse on Tim? What did he do now?”

“He pranked me and I need to get back at him.”

“With a curse? That must have been some prank he pulled. Curses aren’t to be taken lightly, Lucy.”

“I know. And I’m sure about this.”

“Tell you what. Can I call you back after dinner and we can discuss finding the right one for you? Then I can give you the instructions tomorrow. Would that work?”

Lucy had really been hoping for something tonight. To get back at him as soon as possible—while she was still feeling motivated to get back at him—but tomorrow would have to do. She tried to hide her disappointment when she answered. “Yeah. Yeah, of course. Enjoy your dinner. I hope it makes up for the way the rest of your day went.”

“I hope so too.” Angela said, gazing at her husband, who had promised her an evening of pampering. “I’ll talk to you soon.”

Wesley looked over at Angela from his spot behind the steering wheel. “Am I hearing that right? Lucy wants to put a curse on Tim?”

“Yep,” Angela said as she clapped her phone between her hands. She grinned widely. “And I know just the one.”
