I honestly love being in a niche corner of the ATLA fandom as a Zukka shipper LMAO

(I know it’s grown exponentially since the resurgence in 2020, but it’s still on the more niche side of ATLA ships)

Like of course there are bad eggs in any corner of the internet, but 99% of the time, it’s genuinely so chill over here because we’re all just enjoying a fun fandom ship! We know they aren’t canon and we usually aren’t seeking out ship wars. We’re just here to relax and have a good time!!

Along this line, I also love being a fan of the “Hakoda adopts Zuko” trope because it’s so lovely over there too!!

This is why I like to find my nice little spot(s) in a fandom and just stay there lmao - I get to have all the best parts of fandom culture with minimal toxicity😌

I feel like on Tumblr, everyone’s got A Guy from one of their favorite stories that they would kill and die for and the writers don’t give a shit about that guy outside of their set character archetype, and the fandom doesn’t care about The Guy either because they’ve already decided who their poster child is, so you end up being the sole advocate and lorekeeper of The Guy.

Anyways, tag this post with The Guy from your stories or whatever. Only rule of mine is that the character can’t have any sort of significant fanbase or influence on the fandom at large, it has to be Your Guy.

As an example, the only pre-Horizons characters that the PokéAni Tumblr fandom cares about are the guys from Team Rocket, so you end up with tiny little isolated communities of fans of characters like Drew and Iris that have been cut off from society at large. You cannot use Team Rocket because they are not Your Guys, they are Everyone’s Guys.

What exactly is Cohen fic? I’ve seen it mentioned before as a sort of fandom event but I can’t seem to figure out what it is?

Cohen fic my beloved! The Merry Month of Cohen is a Leonard Cohen inspired Star Trek fandom event, with an angst theme. It was started in 2019 by @mia-cooper and the torch has been passed to different folks to run it each year. To me it's one of the highlights of the Star Trek fandom calendar! I've taken part in 5 of the 6 years (and forever gutted I missed the inaugural fest!)

2020 - You Want It Darker - PIC S1 Raffi comforts Seven through some Borg PTSD 2021 - Crow's Feet - A look at Hugh's reclamation surgeries and adjusting to his new life. (And, for my money, the best thing I think I've ever written.) 2022 - Out of the Game - Post PIC S2 Raffi&Rios angst from Raffi's POV 2023 - Anytime - Post PIC S2 Raffi&Rios angst from Rios' POV (so clearly not over S2 even a year later 😅 still not tbh, I miss Team La Sirena) 2024 - Night Sky With Exit Wounds - PIC S2 missing scene, Seven struggling to understand the world without her Borg physiology, and Raffi is there for her. And while I've tried my hand at angst for the Picard fandom, the Voyager fans never fail to write the angstier stuff, I'm in awe. I guess it's dark in the Delta quadrant. From this years fest ( @what-happens-to-the-heart ) I'm obsessed with @grissomesque 's fic: In a Wounded Dawn - it's Janeway/Paris and the Academy era setting at the beginning of chapter 2, grabbed me by the heart and hasn't let go. tldr: star trek x leonard cohen x angst fic = fest perfection

come to think of it another reason I'm biased towards nine might be because we never reach such beautiful casual queer vibes as the doctor + rose + jack situation again, at least not as far as I've watched. like I'm honestly not that much of a shipper but that kiss scene DOES things to me. and part of that is how loosely defined the relationship seems to be, at least maybe from jack's perspective. I can't rightly say it was wholly romantic in canon, but it sure was something - yes, rose flirted with jack way more than the doctor did when they first met, but the doctor even just being chill about jack kissing him feels significant - and I do love a quasi-romantic loosely-defined Something.

Clone Wars Retteyo AU Lore: Names as a Custom

Names are a pretty big deal in Retteyan culture.

While it seems like they’d be likely to not keep the serial number system, they decide to anyway, and for a very interesting reason. You see, part of the reason names are so important for the clones has been to show individuality and personhood, but also because you get to choose it. When the clones chose their names, they created their own identities, and names often said something personal about them, like their personalities or a special memory.

Part of what makes a name special is that you choose it for yourself. So giving new clones names at birth would kind of defeat the point/take that away from them. Sure, you could change your name when you were older, but that wasn’t the point. The point was that it was extremely personal and something to be discovered by living. It’s also good as an identification thing, almost like a SSN, but not exactly. So Retteyans give each baby a serial number, then, as adults, get to choose a legal name. They may discover their name at a younger age, but it will only become their legal one once they are of age.

Many outside of Retteyo may think that Retteyans all have weird and/or unusual names. Some may even mock these names. But Retteyans don’t care if their names sound strange or simple, as the point is their meaning. Besides, there’s a lot of things people find strange or off about Retteyans. Why should they care if their names are weird?

Fandom Year in Review Asks

Favorite fictional characters this year

Last year's undisputed blorbo of Esteban Flores (Elena of Avalor) has continued into this year, though it has been a struggle considering how largely quiet the fandom is (and the fact that I am once again indifferent to the most common/popular ships in what remains of said fandom).

My love for the Ace Attorney fandom continues, and due to the release of the AAI collection port, I have been strongly in my Kay Faraday feels in particular. (Literally every time I pick up my game to play more, I am just overwhelmed by how adorable and funny and endearing and overall 'best girl' she is at all times).

In terms of new-to-me fandoms, I have enjoyed the "helluvaverse" and particularly the characters of Sir Pentious from Hazbin Hotel and Moxxie and Millie from Helluva Boss.

However, 2024 is most notable as the year I finally bit the bullet and ventured into the intimidating sphere of comic book fandom and predictably became DCU trash. My main blorbo is Dick Grayson, who I already knew pretty well through general pop cultural osmosis (mainly Adam West Batman and half-remembered episodes of BTAS from my childhood).

Other DC characters that I already sort of knew from general knowledge but grew to really love are Clark Kent and Lois Lane. I also had peripheral knowledge of the rest of the "bat kids" from my DC fan mutuals, so I also figured I would probably like them as well--and I did (Though I under-estimated how much I would adore Stephanie Brown in particular). However, I did also encounter some additional faves characters that were pretty much entirely new to me--of which I would say that Donna Troy and Garth of Shayeris are the ultimate faves. (Though I pretty much love everyone from most Titans lineups tbh)

Your fictional true love of the year

As of late, my current main blorbos are more "projection objects" for me than crushes. I do find them attractive and enjoy reading the sexitimes fic, but they are not characters that I can particularly see myself dreaming about dating tbh. Still in terms of which ones I loved the most in a platonic sense and dedicated the most time to, probably either Esteban Flores or Dick Grayson as seen above.

In terms of fictional characters that are crush-worthy examples specifically, it's probably gotta be either Shi-Long Lang or Justine Courtney/Verity Gavelle from Ace Attorney Investigations or Hercule Flambeau from BBC Father Brown. In all three cases, I spent pretty much the entire time said characters were on-screen smiling with my face in my hands like a schoolgirl.
