Tiger Woods and Nike are done!
According to CNN
Tiger Woods has broken up with Nike after a protracted 27-year collaboration with the world’s largest sportwear company, the golf legend announced on Monday.
“Over 27 years ago, I was fortunate to start a partnership with one of the most iconic brands in the world,” Woods wrote on X.
Woods went on to write that “there will certainly be another chapter.”
Nike bid adieu to Woods on Instagram, saying “it was a hell of a round, Tiger.”
“Tiger, you challenged your competition, stereotypes, conventions, the old school way of thinking. You challenged the entire institution of golf. You challenged us. And most of all, yourself. And for that challenge we’re grateful,” the company added.
Popular Swiss sneaker brand ON Running’s CEO Marc Maurer, addressing speculation following Woods departure at Nike, told an audience at the ICR retailing Conference on Monday that Woods was not signing with the brand.
“We hope he finds a great new partner. It’s not going to be us,” Maurer told the gathering.
Nike has almost been synonymous with Woods, from when he first went pro in 1996 to his Masters win in 2019, his first major tournament win in 11 years. Even though a sex scandal drove sponsors such as Gatorade, AT&T and Accenture away from Woods – losing him an estimated $20 million – his relationship with Nike stayed intact.
In 1996, Nike launched the iconic “Hello World” commercial, based on Woods’ professional debut at the Greater Milwaukee Open, where he began the press conference with, “I guess, hello world, huh?”
Woods signed a five-year endorsement contract with Nike in 2000. It was worth an estimated $85 million, making it the richest endorsement contract in sports history at the time.
At one point, Woods’ Nike deal was reported to be worth as much as $20 million a year, CNN previously reported. Woods signed multiple deals with the company over a span of nearly three decades, including a 10-year deal signed in 2013 that’s worth about $200 million. But in 2019, his deal was worth about half of that amount annually, Bob Dorfman, an endorsement expert and executive creative director at Baker Street Advertising, said at the time.
Woods is still one of the best known athletes in the country, three times better known by the general public than the average athlete, according to surveys by Q Score.
And while positive opinions of him are down from his heyday among the general public, sports fans still have a more positive view of him than the average athlete, according to the Q Score surveys.
“Why is Nike separating from Woods who has been a long-time brand ambassador for the brand? It could be that Nike is looking to get out of the golf business,” said Eric Smallwood, president of Apex Marketing Group, a sports and entertainment firm that evaluates sponsorships and advertising campaigns.
“Nike used to sell golf balls and clubs with its logo and that ended. It still sells golf clothing and footwear,” he said.
Smallwood said he would be surprised if the breakup was due to any concern that Woods was nearing the end of his career.
“Woods is synonymous with golf. Nike has stuck with him through his life trials and his comebacks,” he said. “Woods can play as long as he wants to in the PGA and then the Senior PGA. Look how long Nike has held on to Michael Jordan. He hasn’t played in over 20 years.”
In August, Woods was named the sixth player director on the powerful PGA Tour policy board, giving players a one seat advantage on the board after the controversial merger between the PGA Tour and Saudi-backed LIV golf. Woods had reportedly turned down nearly $1 billion to play in LIV golf.
Joshua Butler, founder of online golf clothing brand J. Butler Golf, called Woods a savvy business person “who understands that the landscape of golf is changing.”
“Nike has been pulling away from golf products. Tiger has vast opportunity to land somewhere else,” said Butler. “Golf clothing companies are coming into the market with other options, better options and varied price points.”
“It’s not that Nike has done anything wrong, it’s not that Tiger Woods may not necessarily be happy with his relationship with Nike for the last 27 years, but this is a golden opportunity to go after a younger crowd, to go after individuals who aren’t rich that want to play the game,” he said. “Tiger understands that, the importance of what he’s meant to the golf industry as well as to people of color. That’s why I think this is such as monumental shift right now.”
–CNN’s Chris Isidore, Robert Ilich and Wayne Sterling contributed to this story

Virginia: Trump admin sues Stafford County over zoning law blocking Islamic cemetery - shady dealings overlooked
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Friday, June 19, 2020
Justice Department Files Lawsuit Against Stafford County, Virginia, Over Blocking of Islamic Cemetery
The Justice Department today announced that it has filed a lawsuit alleging that Stafford County, Virginia, violated the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act (RLUIPA) by enacting overly restrictive zoning regulations prohibiting an Islamic organization from developing a religious cemetery on land it had purchased for that purpose.
“The United States of America must and will remain a nation committed to the right of all people to practice their faith free from unjustified governmental restrictions. Indeed, this nation exists to provide sanctuary to people seeking the religious freedom that is too often denied in other parts of the world, and the Department of Justice is committed to protecting the fundamental right of people of all faiths to practice their religion free from illegal governmental interference,” said Assistant Attorney General Eric Dreiband of the Civil Rights Division. “That right protects the freedom of faith communities to use their land for religious purposes, including for cemeteries, houses of worship, and religious schools.”
“Honoring and burying the dead is a sacred religious act for many faith traditions,” said G. Zachary Terwilliger, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. “The complaint that was filed in this case demonstrates this office’s commitment to ensuring that those of all faiths are not substantially burdened by improper local government actions in practicing their religious rituals.”
The complaint, filed in the Eastern District of Virginia, alleges that the county passed an ordinance in 2016 that blocked the All Muslim Association of America from developing an Islamic cemetery on a 29-acre parcel of land that it owns. When the association bought the property, it complied with all of the state and local requirements for use as a cemetery. But after learning of the association’s plans, the county amended its ordinance to require that cemeteries be no closer than 900 feet from private wells and certain types of streams, thus preventing the association from using its property as a cemetery. The United States’ complaint alleges that this requirement is far more restrictive than the Virginia Department of Health’s 100-foot distancing standard, has no legitimate health justification, imposes a substantial burden on the association’s religious exercise, and is not narrowly tailored to achieve a compelling governmental interest.
The complaint seeks injunctive relief, including a court order that the county allow the association to build its cemetery in conformity with the prior ordinance.

More on the shady Islamic dealings via: Stafford's dispute with Muslim organization heats up amid DOJ investigation
The Muslim nonprofit lobbed accusations of religious discrimination, leading to a U.S. Department of Justice investigation that could turn into a lawsuit against the county. But Stafford once enjoyed a good relationship with the AMAA—maybe too good, according to Supervisor Wendy Maurer.
At a public meeting Tuesday, Maurer said she thinks the AMAA benefited from political favoritism when the county bought a large swath of land from the nonprofit for more than $600,000 in 2017. That 76-acre property on Brooke Road abuts the organization's existing cemetery—which the county approved in 1995—but Planning Director Jeff Harvey said the AMAA determined it would be “cost prohibitive” to expand the cemetery there because of slopes and wetlands.
The county bought the land and an adjacent tract owned by someone else with the stated goals of saving forests and wetlands near Crow's Nest Natural Area Preserve and providing a buffer for a nearby 70-acre heron rookery.
Maurer, whose Rock Hill District includes the proposed cemetery on Garrisonville Road that caused the dispute, said in an interview that she highlighted the purchase to show that Stafford's history with the organization is not one of discrimination.
“The moment you don’t get your way, now all of sudden we're discriminatory," she said, calling the accusation disingenuous. "Honestly, I took great offense to it.”
The county's past dealings with the AMAA will likely have no bearing on the DOJ's investigation of a nearly 2-year-old ordinance that critics say was designed solely to block the proposed Muslim cemetery on 1508 Garrisonville Road. In fact, supervisors' divided vote Tuesday to maintain the ordinance rather than relax it could add fuel to the fire.
Still, Maurer's explosive remarks offered a different perspective on the county's dealings with the AMAA.
She took particular aim at former Board of Supervisors Chairman Paul Milde, suggesting that he orchestrated the sale of AMAA's land as a political favor to the nonprofit's members who donated to or supported his campaign. The organization unsuccessfully tried to market the property to private buyers, Maurer said.
Milde, who voluntarily stepped down at the end of 2017, strongly denied the allegation, writing in an email that Maurer’s “lame attempt to smear me is intended to distract from her pursuit of a discriminatory policy that is placing the county in legal peril.” Supervisors unanimously voted in favor of the ordinance in December 2016, but Milde said he was unaware of its effect on the cemetery at the time.
Attorney Clark Leming, who represents the AMAA, said county employees, not Milde, approached the organization about buying the land. AMAA could have expanded its cemetery on a portion of that land had the county not made the offer, he said.
The organization bought its proposed cemetery site on Garrisonville Road for $800,000 in 2015, about 18 months before the county passed its disputed ordinance prohibiting new cemeteries within 900 feet of private wells, reservoirs and streams that drain into reservoirs. The Virginia Department of Health's more relaxed standards say new wells should not be within 100 feet of cemeteries, though the state does require a distance of 900 feet between cemeteries and public water supplies.
Emails show that concerns the Muslim cemetery would contaminate nearby wells influenced the setback, but that issue never came up during public meetings at the time.
Those discussions occurred around the same time the county negotiated the purchase of the AMAA's land.
Supervisors voted unanimously in October 2016 to buy the site for $650,000, about $41,800 more than its assessed value. In the same vote, they also agreed to pay $175,000 to another landowner for a 46-acre tract near Crow's Nest with a taxable value of $377,000.
[So they overpaid the Muslim group and underpaid the non-Muslim landowner by more than half]
A county spokesman said the Northern Virginia Conservation Trust, which owns the nearby heron rookery, took an interest in the property first and negotiated the sale prices before the county got involved. Milde also said the NVCT pitched the idea to the county and that he was not initially part of the discussions.
The county received a $433,000 grant toward the land purchases from the Virginia Land Conservation Foundation, an organization Milde belonged to. A $400,000 donation to Stafford's conservation program also helped cover the cost. A stipulation of that donation, made by a developer in exchange for the county's approval of a 75-home subdivision, was that the money be used to preserve land in the Aquia District. A county report said Stafford employees worked with Milde, who represented the Aquia District, to "identify viable properties for land conservation."
Milde, who has been a proponent of protecting Crow's Nest for years, said at a meeting two years ago that the purchases "didn't cost us anything, really, on a county level."
Stafford did end up paying half of the $11,259 cost to clean up a dump site on the Muslim nonprofit's property, subtracting the balance from the purchase price. Maurer said the county is supposed to cite landowners for dump sites, not pay to clear them, under an ordinance. And she noted that municipal employees typically avoid working on private property for liability reasons.
“So we didn’t cite them; we didn’t discriminate against them religiously,” Maurer said at the meeting. “Actually, they were given special consideration because we didn’t apply our Stafford County ordinance.”
She implied that Milde played a role in the cleanup, which was coordinated by employees of the Rappahannock Regional Landfill. Milde was a member last year of the Rappahannock Regional Solid Waste Management Board, but he said in an email that neither he nor his colleagues on the R-Board authorized or discussed the trash cleanup.
Maurer also claimed that AMAA reps offered to raise money for her campaign in a meeting last year to discuss the proposed cemetery. She said the organization did not explicitly make the offer in exchange for her support of its cemetery, but that the inference concerned her.
In addition, she alleged that AMAA officials told her "Milde got Stafford County to buy our land.” That statement, Maurer said, caused her to look into what she now considers a questionable deal. She said she voted in favor of the purchase because "I was under the assumption that all was well and good—that this wasn’t a special deal."
In a May 2017 email before Maurer's meetup with the Muslim group, Milde offered to join her and described AMAA board member Rafi Ahmed—who requested the meeting—as a "good citizen and supporter of mine." Online records show no donations from Ahmed to Milde, though Ahmed has attended an annual fundraiser put on by the former supervisor. Ahmed did not immediately respond to a call from The Free Lance–Star for comment.
Milde did receive a $1,000 donation in 2012 from a Mossadaq Chughtai, who listed his employer as the Pakistani American Leadership Center. He is also the AMAA's president, according to the organization's website. He got another $250 donation that year from Muhammad Tarar, who listed the AMAA as his employer.
Milde, who will seek the Republican nomination next year for the 28th District House of Delegates seat, said in an email that he's never received a donation from an organization called the AMAA and that he does not ask his donors about their religious affiliations. He called Maurer's claims "false and baseless."
"For the sake of Stafford taxpayers, she needs to reacquaint herself with the U.S. Constitution and current protections for religious institutions in federal law," Milde wrote in an email.
The AMAA made a conflict-of-interest complaint of its own last year against Planning Commissioner Crystal Vanuch, who lives across the street from the organization's proposed cemetery. Commonwealth's Attorney Eric Olsen found that Vanuch did not have a conflict under state law, though she did recuse herself from the Planning Commission's vote several months ago to recommend keeping the cemetery ordinance.
Vanuch took an active role in proposing the changes and even made a presentation on the topic to the Board of Supervisors nearly two years ago. During that presentation, she did not mention the proposed Muslim cemetery as being one of the reasons for the new ordinance.
Supervisor Jack Cavalier, who voted Tuesday against retaining the ordinance, said Vanuch's briefing was "totally out of normal order."
"That has rarely, if ever, been done, and I don't think that we were given the briefing that we probably deserved at that time," Cavalier said, "and I don't think we were afforded the opportunity to make a really informed decision."

RLUPA renders local zoning laws irrelevant.
If cities are “obligated to treat religious assemblies and institutions on equal terms with nonreligious assemblies and institutions,” then it is time for cities to start taxing religious assemblies and institutions on equal terms with nonreligious assemblies and institutions.

Tennessee: 2020 Gator Bowl Champions
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A Tennessee football season filled with drama ended with plenty of it.
The Vols erased a two-score fourth-quarter deficit and rallied to a 23-22 victory over Indiana in the Gator Bowl on Thursday night in front of a crowd of 61,789 at TIAA Bank Field.
Tennessee (8-5) will take a six-game winning streak into the offseason, while Indiana (8-5) came heartbreakingly close to its first nine-win season since 1967.
Trailing 22-9, the Vols used an 82-yard touchdown drive to move within one possession.
Then Paxton Brooks dribbled an onside kick that Eric Gray recovered. Three plays later, Gray was in the end zone with a 16-yard scoring run to give the Vols the lead with 3:51 left in the game.
Indiana had a chance to go ahead, but Logan Justus missed a 52-yard field goal to the right. Justus missed an extra point earlier in the game.
The Hoosiers regained possession with less than a minute remaining and crossed midfield, but Peyton Ramsey's fourth-down pass sailed incomplete.
Tennessee led 6-3 at halftime, riding the coattails of its defense that powered its winning streak. But Indiana opened the third quarter with a 12-play, 69-yard scoring drive.
Ramsey’s running ability gave the Vols fits all night, and his 9-yard scramble on second down set up his touchdown on a sneak.
Two plays later, Tennessee quarterback Jarrett Guarantano threw an interception that was returned for a score, and the Vols suddenly trailed 16-6 with 8:26 remaining in the third quarter.
The Vols will have five scholarship quarterbacks in spring practice if each of the quarterbacks on this year’s team returns. Having more competition in the form of incoming freshmen Harrison Bailey and Jimmy Holiday is a welcome addition after the quarterback woes that hamstrung this season.
Guarantano finished 18-of-31 for 221 yards with two interceptions. Brian Maurer appeared in one drive and threw back-to-back passes into traffic that were nearly intercepted. That ended his night.
Guarantano, a junior, enters the offseason with a flimsy handle on the starting spot after a season in which he lost and regained the job.
Don’t bury Guarantano, though. He’s the quarterback with nine lives, and he was at his best during the fourth-quarter rally.
The Vols had 202 yards of offense in the first half, but scored just six points.
How can that be? Well, it’s Tennessee.
The Vols’ red-zone woes continued. Three first-half trips inside the 10-yard line resulted in a pair of field goals. The first trip ended in a failed fourth down before Tennessee wisely just sent out Brent Cimaglia for the easy three points the next two times.
To Tennessee’s credit, it scored touchdowns on both second-half trips into the red zone. The Vols finished the season with a 48.9% touchdown rate on red-zone trips. That ranks 13th in the SEC.
Guarantano desperately wanted to get Jauan Jennings the ball on his first pass attempt of the second half. The Hoosiers seemed to sense that.
Jamar Johnson undercut Jennings to intercept the pass and returned it for a 63-yard touchdown.
Jennings finished with two catches in his one half of play after serving a first-half suspension.
Freshman Ramel Keyton was one of the wide receivers who saw an uptick in playing time in place of Jennings. He made an impressive catch on a downfield 50/50 ball before making a catch over the middle to move the chains on a third down. His two catches doubled his season total.
Josh Palmer was Tennessee’s leading receiver with six catches for 68 yards.

Nicholas Ofczarek (* 30.
