eowyn realising she inherited the worst traits of her parents,,, eowyn who sees her fathers recklessness reflected in herself knowing it brought him death. Eowyn who knows that while her mothers despair was visible in the way she slowly rotted away, her own resulted in her trying to get herself killed in battle.

“But to some one I must now entrust my people that I leave behind, to rule them in my place. Which of you will stay?” No man spoke. “Is there none whom you would name? In whom do my people trust?” “In the House of Eorl,” answered Hama. “But Eomer I cannot spare, nor would he stay,” said the king; “and he is the last of that House.” “I said not Eomer,” answered Hama. “And he is not the last. There is Eowyn, daughter of Eomund, his sister. She is fearless and high-hearted. All love her. Let her be as lord to the Eorlingas, while we are gone.”
“It shall be so,” said Theoden. “Let the heralds announce to the folk that the Lady Eowyn will lead them!”

Eomer: I can’t find Hama anywhere in this crowd.
Theoden: I’ve got this.
*Theoden cups his mouth*
Theoden: BUT EOMER I CANNOT SPARE, NOR WOULD HE STAY, AND HE IS THE LAST OF THAT HOUSE!
*Footsteps, growing louder and louder, a feral screech of fury*
Hama: I SAID NOT EOMER. AND HE IS NOT THE LAST. THERE IS EOWYN, DAUGHTER OF EOMUND, HIS SISTER. SHE IS FEARLESS AND HIGH-HEARTED. ALL LOVE HER. LET HER BE AS LORD TO THE EORLINGAS, WHILE WE ARE GONE!

OH this is heartachingly wonderful!
Raven and Golden, August 2024
Faramir and Eowyn found each other while waiting for the great battle, worried, unable to fight because they had already been hurt by the great evil. They helped each other heal, both physically and emotionally. We don't know enough about their cinematic versions, as we barely get to know them in the book, but it's enough to love them unconditionally. It took me a long time to find a good reference pic (even this one might be a montage of different stills?) but then, the colouring came easily and beautifully.

Her fist connected with his face, sending his glasses flying and making him stumble backwards, falling ass first to the floor. Her knuckles cracked and burned with the impact and her arm protested, as if she had torn something. Her red hair, that had been tied up, broke free from the tie and landed on her face. She puffed angry breaths, like a dragon.
"But no living man am I! You look upon a woman." Lily thought. "Eowyn I am, Eomund's daughter. You stand between me and my lord and kin. Begone, if you be not deathless! For living or dark undead, I will smite you, if you touch him."
"I will smite you, if you touch him again," she said.
The satisfaction that her violence brought her made all the pain worth it. Lily Evans had never been a damnsel in need of rescuing and she never would. She was bright! And no boy, let alone James Potter, would make her feel anything less.
She looked down on him, eyes blazing and a firm frown holding back her urge to smile. And, in the seconds before her knuckes had kissed his skin and he had raised his hand to craddle his broken nose, she could swear she saw him smile too. He looked up at her and she was trapped in that moment with him.
Was violence truly his language? Had she spoken it and he understood it? Or was this only a moment in which two people found themselves in synchrony?
None of her questions would ever be answered, as his friends broke the spell by scrambling to collect him and get him up. Her own friend, whom she had been defending, moved to grab her arm and pull her away.
Severus was saying something. An apology for causing her trouble, cursing the other boys, asking her about the state of her hand, but she couldn't focus. All she could think about was how James had been laying down at her feet bleeding and smiling.
Maybe she understood the hype around him after all.

never have i ever been so ???? as when someone was talking about merry, eowyn, the witch king and the whole "no living man" thing, and they loved the books very much were quoting them and everything... and they got hung up on the man thing.
as in, they were sure it was actually the burrow downs blade merry was carrying that made the witch king vulnerable to killing, with eowyn being the one to step up and K.O. him despite her shattered shield arm- which yes yes I am following along perfectly fine so far, tom bombadil strikes again, ok-
and the person was frustrated bc if the "no living man may hinder me" thing was true then what about merry isn't merry a man didn't merry hinder-
And I swear I sat there for a full ten minutes, staring.
the thing about the middle earth books is, almost everyone is a dude. it's the default. i couldn't even remember when characters referred to each other by gender specifically (outside of eowyn's arc) beyond polite titles like lord or king, because it'd be so weird. the default is always male. it's assumed. im still trying to remember if any of the hobbits were called men- halflings, shire folk, little ones, i remember them being described by the things that set them apart from the people around them, and that was always WHAT they were. short, mainly. or presumed rich and important, for pipin the halfling prince while in gondor
in the lord of the rings and the hobbit the gender norm is so universal the word "man" almost always means... humans. as opposed to, elves, dwarves, orcs, blah blah blah, hobbits yadda yadda
So it was just, shocking to hear someone talking about the "man" in the witch king's context as a gender thing
eowyn answers it like it is, but i always thought that was her being cheeky. her whole thing there is defiance so i just figured, well, she expects to die and wants to piss him off while she goes. sure she'd make a joke of his boast. no living man. well no living MAN am I. like a pun?
then a hobbit, not a man, stabs the dude with a blade made to hurt and weaken him, and a woman, not a man, gets him in the head with her sword right after
which subversion of the "man" thing killed him in the end?
"not by the hand of man will he fall"
teen me thought the prophecy had been man vs hobbit, originally, but eowyn herself ALSO made it woman vs man, because only she- a woman, alone of all the men who rode to battle- only she understood merry and thought it right to bring a hobbit into war,
(something something, the theme of the books about different people coming together to save their world, those long overlooked shaking the towers of them who never thought to fear them)
but prophecy aside, she eowyn- as a woman- also served up this witch king with his own arrogance and superiority, because this whole battle WAS mankind HINDERING him, wasn't it now? she IS standing in his way, hindering him as well. one of mankind killed him, and the woman who sent him packing made a mockery of his pride right before she did it.
"no living man" pssh. begone if you be not deathless. eowyn daughter of eomund is gonna hit you with her fucking sword even if it kills her
and isn't that what the mankind of middle earth were all about?
(glorfindel you were either slightly wrong or being a pest) (i'd almost bet pest tbh)
man, mankind, fought that battle on the pelennor fields against the witch king's might, though it took a woman specifically to bring together all the pieces that would finally make him fall (herself) (1 hobbit + dagger) (love for her family) (friendship) (urge to KILL)
but still humans are the lays potato chips of middle earth
no dwarven unbending will, no longevity or wisdom of elves, no magic, not even that hardiness of the heart that hobbits can push through on
boromir, eowyn, eomer, theoden- humans other than aragorn the elvish or faramir the wizardly- hell even grima... kinda...
they might fail and die and falter, but when the end comes, they throw their whole selves into it. they'll at least be a hindrance on their way out
what was i saying
oh whatever. eowyn killed the witch king with snark and he died mad about it or something
#lotr#eowyn of rohan#merry brandybuck#the witch king of angmar#just thinking and mulling#looking back on kid me reading it#people have so many different ways of reading the same book#its like getting to reread it yourself for the first time again

I've just finished reading 'Unwary'.
This was amazing - thank you for writing and sharing, and thank you for tagging me!
I can certainly sympathize with Theodwyn's view on Eomund. The things that make a man exciting at 20 quite often make him childish and irritating at 40 if he doesn't grow up and move beyond him.
Then we discover, Theodwyn is just as flawed that way herself. Also incapable of heeding the advice of others, not accepting she needs to change and behave more sensibly until it's too late.
I loved the add-on stuff about Thengel. I headcanon Thengel as being a hard, authoritarian father who set high standards and expected obedience (hence why Theoden is so worried about being worthy of his ancestors), and struggled to show love, especially to his kids. I also headcanon that one of the daughters was completely overlooked because she was quieter and plainer than her more glamorous and outgoing siblings. The 'second daughter' name in your story is a great but painful touch.
Would be interesting to see a follow-up from Eomer's perspective. The son who loves his parents unconditionally as a child realizes as an adult how flawed they both were. And perhaps it gives him some painful moments of self-reflection, sitting in vigil over Eowyn in the Halls of Healing after the Battle of Pelennor Fields, accepting that he himself suffers from the same rash stubbornness, and it almost got him killed as well. He tells himself he needs to do better and be better going forward, if he is to be a good King.
Beautifully done. Thank you again, for your lovely work :)
Thank you so very much! What a lovely message!
I think you and I are in a very similar place about Thengel! As someone who’s own father was a damn mess, he never had a good role model for fatherhood and so prioritized easily quantifiable things like discipline and obedience over squishier stuff like feelings, which he would never have imagined talking about with his dad. And since he was essentially forced back to Rohan against his will, I think that would also have made him very particular about wanting to have everything his own way once he was there. (Like an “I’m compensating for my lack of control in being here by overly controlling everything else” kind of deal.)
What you say about the lingering effect of the deaths of Éomund and Théodwyn on Éomer (and Éowyn) is really interesting. I sort of walked up to the edge of that in an earlier story, but I’d like to re-look at that now that I have a clearer sense in my own mind of how things went down with the parents. I wonder how much of the true circumstances of their deaths the kids would have ever been told. Éomund’s death was a matter of military tactics gone bad, so they probably would have learned that over time just from a description of the bare facts. But beyond knowing that their mother became inexplicably ill and died, did they know any more about the context?
It’s really interesting to think about and something I’d love to read more about, too, if anyone else has written (or will write) on that same overall theme!
(Also, have I ever told you that your Éomer “listen up fives, a ten is speaking” gifs are one of my ALL TIME favorite LOTR memes??? ♥️)

Hello! i saw the ask game and i wanted to ask your opinions about my best guy Theoden!
Love your blog!
<3 <3 hello hello! Yess, he is the best!
First impression
I always loved him. It's the soft dad vibes that he gives off in the film and I always transposed those onto book version of Theoden as well, even if they aren't as front-and-centre.
Impression now
As you all know I have a soft spot for imperfection and Theoden is very much an imperfect leader who is trying his damndest in an impossible situation.
I love his fear of being like his ancestors (sure "lesser son of greater sires" but in the immediate memory Fengel and Thengel weren't anything to write home about and I'm sure Theoden had the "don't be like your grandfather" running in his head), which is a nice parallel to Aragorn's own fears and concerns. That certain weaknesses are "inherited" or you're somehow doomed to repeat the failings of your forefathers.
I also really appreciate Theoden's practicality and realism. This is definitly shown way more in the books than in the films.** But he is so pragmatic and realistic about what is happening and has a strong, stable workman-like air to his leadership as king and general. It's very grounding and a nice compliment to the high fantasy that is happening around them all.
--
**I have Views & Opinions on what PJ did with Theoden in the films in relation to Aragorn
Favorite moment
In the movies, I love all of his speeches. My favourite, favourite scene is "but do you trust your king/where is the horse and the rider" bit with Gamling. Second up are the paralleling scenes of "I know your face" with Eowyn. Soft dad vibes <3 <3
In the book, I naturally have my favourite scene is when he's missing Grima and having those complex feelings of "I'm angry at this man for what he has done and his betrayal, while at the same time I'm grieving the relationship we used to have/the man he once was." It's so very human.
I just love Theoden's deep humanity. A feature so often missing in the race of Man who are usually more High Arthurian, for lack of a better way to phrase it. Not that the likes of Aragorn and Faramir don't have their deeply human moments, they for sure do, but Theoden is consistently the most deeply human of the leaders, aside from Denethor, and I really like that.
Idea for a story
There's a part of me that's a secret Theoden/Grima shipper, so you know. Anything utterly tragic in that department with some bittersweet hope(?) at the end. Kill me where our love hurts most, my liege.
Otherwise, I would love an exploration of Theoden and his father's relationship and how he positions himself within the frame of his father and grandfather's legacy. Also his changing views on what it means to be Rohirrim - considering I am sure he has a complex relationship with that. He's more comfortable in Westron and Sindarin than the language of his own people! That's got to have some complexity to it.
Unpopular opinion
I'm not sure I have one on Theoden? I feel like most of my opinions are pretty par for the course.
Favorite relationship
Definitly Eowyn. I love the father-daughter vibe happening with them. I wish we saw more of it.
Favorite headcanon
When Theoden adopted Eomer and Eowyn he went around to everyone in Meduseld apologising in advance. People were like "?? your niece and nephew seem charming and lovely ??" and Theoden was like "ok but you don't understand: They are the Children of Eomund. This is going to be INSANE."
He always loved them, of course, but they were little terrors. You know that dual thing of dealing with grief of losing parents/being orphaned at a young age and how that can lead to lashing out plus natural peronalities being on the fiery side.
Theoden just like, put everyone on High Alert.
(lol Grima would have been like mid-late twenties and Theoden is like: New Guy, do you like children? And Grima is all: Abso-fucking-lutely not. Why? Theoden: No reason. Gamling, I was wrong, we can't put the new guy on baby-sitting duties.)
----
Thank you!!! Theoden is just, ah, one of my top tier faves. And thank you, I'm glad you enjoy my wee lil' tumblr :D

I'm just so happy I was in my easily-influenced, transformative years when Eowyn, daughter of Eomund, was on theatre screens chopping the head off of a lizard dragon while bloodied and dirty and refusing to hide her femininity and I got to watch that and go "Yeah I wanna be like her"

The Newly Soon To Be Weds - Chapter 1 - TeamGwenee - The Lord of the Rings - J. R. R. Tolkien [Archive of Our Own]
Éowyn blinked awake as the light hit her eyes, and saw that it must be late morning. Her hair was stuck to the side of her face, and her mouth was half open. She scraped away the sticky strands of hair, wondering when last it was she slept so deep that her mouth had fallen open, and nothing less than the sun itself had been able to wake her.
Something New - TeamGwenee - The Lord of the Rings - J. R. R. Tolkien [Archive of Our Own]
When Éowyn told him of her plans to wed, Éomer; ever the soldier, had looked for only the dangers. It was rushed. Faramir was a stranger, Ithilien was far away, and Éowyn, Éowyn had been alone, in a strange city, hurting and sick and beautiful. She had already given her heart away on wish and thought before, she had already been preyed on by a soft tongued charmer.
Matchmaker, Matchmaker, Make Me a Match - Chapter 1 - TeamGwenee - The Lord of the Rings - J. R. R. Tolkien [Archive of Our Own]
Lothíriel would have scowled at her weaving, had she not feared for wrinkles.
For five days she’d been working on a tapestry, depicting a herd of Mearas running through the fields of Rohan. Size and subject matter (horses were notoriously tricky in all art forms) made this tapestry the most ambitious of all her projects, and Lothíriel loathed that she felt she had to complete it in order to gain some points with her new people.
A Shadow and a Thought - TeamGwenee - The Lord of the Rings - J. R. R. Tolkien [Archive of Our Own]
Less and less Éowyn longed for death in battle, and after she’d reached an understanding with Faramir, life had never held so much promise.
Yet now, more than ever, she wished that she’d just let the Witch King take her. The second she put those papers into Faramir’s hands, the papers who were to be seen by none but herself, she prayed for death.
The Lady's Hand - Chapter 1 - TeamGwenee - The Lord of the Rings - J. R. R. Tolkien [Archive of Our Own]
The emotions running over the King’s face ranged from pleasure, to surprise, to disapproval, before finally settling on concern. He held the letter aloft with one hand, and speared sausage on his fork the other, frowning as he chewed.
'My King?’ Faramir said across the breakfast table. 'Is all well? What is the word from Rohan?'
'We’re invited to witness the marriage of Lady Eowyn, daughter of Eomund and beloved niece of King Theoden,' Aragorn said, putting the letter to one side.
‘You don’t seem over pleased at the news,’ Faramir said, his eyes flickering towards the Queen.
A Mettarë Carol - Chapter 1 - TeamGwenee - The Lord of the Rings - J. R. R. Tolkien [Archive of Our Own]
Sauron was as dead as a doornail.
That was the news Denethor awoke to, seven nights after the Battle at the Black Gate.
That fool of a woman, Ioreth, told him, amidst a storm of news and cushion fluffing.
What a nonsense saying, dead as a doornail. Was the doornail a particularly dead thing? What made a doornail more dead than any other sort of nail? Surely a coffin nail would have suited more.
All the words that came prattling out of the woman’s mouth, and not a single one of sense. Not that the world Denethor awoke to made much sense.
Fear and the Gardener - TeamGwenee - The Lord of the Rings - J. R. R. Tolkien [Archive of Our Own]
The first time Eowyn rode into Minas Morgul, there was fear.
Faramir and the men at arms feared. The King feared, and cautioned. Her brother feared, and begged. The wound of a Nazgul lingered in the flesh, long after healing. It could be contained, treated, overcome, but it could not be vanquished. To ride through the gates, into the domain of the being who struck her and sent her to the realm of shadows, was to be reminded of that.
The Fellowship of the Gown - TeamGwenee - The Lord of the Rings - All Media Types [Archive of Our Own]
For all that Eowyn was officially healed, her arms were still tender, and King Elessar had made it clear that she was to take a gentle return to active life.
Only recently had she been allowed to get back in the saddle, and only then was she ride to for no more than an hour, at no faster than a canter, and; at her brother’s insistence, always with a sufficient escort (and no, Merry alone was not sufficient, for all that he was an esquire of Rohan. Eomer remembered what happened the last time Eowyn and Merry rode off together, and he had no intention of letting that happen again.)
Eowyn's New Toy - TeamGwenee - The Lord of the Rings - J. R. R. Tolkien [Archive of Our Own]
Gimli, son of Gloin, was a frequent guest in the halls of Emyn Arnen. The dear friend and sword brother of the elf Legolas, he often came by the way of Ithilien, and was a welcome presence to the Prince and his lady.
On this day more than ever.
Gimli’s people were renowned for their craftsmanship, and he was no exception. He delighted in all that was made beautiful and fine by mortal hands, and he delighted in sharing those treasures with they that he loved.
Lady Eowyn was one such blessed recipient. He had met her years ago, in the hall of her uncle, and had the pleasure of watching her grow from despair into joy. Her valour, her skill and devotion was such to inspire the deepest fondness, and Gimli was determined to present Eowyn with a gift worthy of her.
Fool of a Took! (and Brandybuck. And Shieldmaiden.) - TeamGwenee - The Lord of the Rings - J. R. R. Tolkien [Archive of Our Own]
'Perhaps we ought to ask Strider- I’m sorry, Aragorn. No, Elessar, King Elessar, if he can work his kingly magic hands again?’ Merry suggested.
Pippin shook his head. ‘We can’t do that! Then we’d have to tell him how my lady got in this state. And, well, technically, I was on duty last night.’
“Well, we’re in a bit of a muddle then Pip, because so was I.’
The two hobbits did look particularly dashing in their respective uniforms, Pippin in his black and silver tunic of the Guards of the Citadel, and Merry in the gold and red and green of the Esquires of Rohan. Or at least, they had the night before, when their lady’s nuptial celebrations had started. A night of pre-marital merrymaking had seen them all worse for wear, the Lady Eowyn most of all.
Torchwood Fics!
From The Desk of a Hipster Zombie - BricklingGhost (TeamGwenee) - Torchwood [Archive of Our Own]
Dear Jack,
I need to talk to you. I need to feel as though I’m talking to you. Not that you will ever get this letter.
You don’t tend to leave forwarding addresses. At least, that’s what Gwen says. You’re not that easy to get into contact with, and even if Gwen didn’t already tell me how long it is that it’s been like that, I could still tell it’s been that way for a while because there was only a slight trace of bitterness in her voice when she said it. And that’s quite remarkable, as Gwen is somewhat bitter these days.
Torchwood Gets a Union - BricklingGhost (TeamGwenee) - Torchwood [Archive of Our Own]
“We need to talk” is never a great thing to hear from your lover. It’s even worse when coming from your love/ a mob of employees. That is, if "four" can count as a mob. They were all armed and skilled in combat, so it probably can.
“Ok,” Jack said, sitting back at his desk, “what do we need to talk about?”
The team looked at each other.
“It’s about what happened with Rhys,” Tosh said, “and the retcon.”
“Basically” Owen said, “we all lost a bit of respect for you that day.”
Dragons Lighting the Torch - Chapter 1 - BricklingGhost (TeamGwenee) - Torchwood [Archive of Our Own]
King Jacaerys rode Morning to his coronation. It seemed right, for the king who promised to lead Westeros into its new age to ride the very dragon whose hatching had promised new life to the Blacks, after their queen had been brutally devoured, and all hope seemed lost.
Jacaerys, Jack to his intimates, had been but a stripling boy when he first sought to claim the last known dragon. Just another dashing Targaryen with more fire than sense.
He was the heir, but he was never meant to be king. King Alexerys was no father of his, just an uncle, and his wife, Queen Yvanne was a proud woman and never doubted that her yet unborn children would sit upon the Iron Throne.
Alas, it was not to be so.
Habits (Stay High) - BricklingGhost (TeamGwenee) - Torchwood [Archive of Our Own]
It was the best for both of them. Rhys knew it. Gwen knew it. They’d grown apart. They had already been struggling. This affair, this bloke at work, he was the nail, not the coffin. Rhys didn’t even need to mention the affair when he spread the news. Gwen’s new job, the time it took, the changes it made in her, were excuses enough.
The Food Run - BricklingGhost (TeamGwenee) - Torchwood [Archive of Our Own]
Gwen liked the Tesco’s on Briar’s End. It had five exits, evenly spaced, and she knew where all the security cameras were.
She had her Phase 0 credit card on her, the one with her real name. This was the one she used when she knew and grudgingly accepted the authorities, conspirators and conspiracy theorists were watching her. The one she used when she was living, out of hiding, as Gwen Cooper, normal civilian.
After the Fallout - BricklingGhost (TeamGwenee) - Torchwood [Archive of Our Own]
Owen didn’t feel the cold. Owen felt fuck all most of the time. At least, technically he felt fuck all. But he still liked it when Tosh put the blanket over his shoulders. The blanket felt theoretically nice.
“For the shock,” Tosh said, before blushing and backing away.
Owen didn’t feel shock either. Or he had been in a constant state of shock since the Pharm. Still, he appreciated the blanket. He tugged it around close, getting the barest sensation of fabric brushing against his skin. If he concentrated really hard, really, proper focussed, there was some things he could still feel. He could feel Tosh’s lips pressing against his cheek.
Auld Lang Syne - BricklingGhost (TeamGwenee) - Torchwood [Archive of Our Own]
It took, coincidentally enough, about a year to figure out the device. It was the season itself that put the idea into her head. That stray thought made it all fit together. The translations of the runes on the side, speaking of death and life and time. Of future and past. New Years Eve was the key, Gwen realised. The hour when the old year died and the new one rose.
The Splott Community Theatre Christmas Pantomime - BricklingGhost (TeamGwenee) - Torchwood [Archive of Our Own]
Christmas was tricky enough on its own without the aliens.
Shopping, wrapping, cleaning, cooking. Stuffing tinsel into every bloody nook and cranny you could find. Spending hours trawling through the John Lewis website to find the perfect gift for the mother in law you despise, eventually throwing up yours hands and saying fuck it, she’ll hate it anyway, only to spend another two hours trying to find something she’ll love because you’ve already invested so much time and effort on John sodding Lewis and if you check just one more page you’re sure you’ll find it, at which point you have your co-worker lean over your shoulder, close the John Lewis tab for you, and give you a lecture on the Sunk-Cost Fallacy.
Watch Where You Go - BricklingGhost (TeamGwenee) - Torchwood [Archive of Our Own]
Gwen had the flu.
When they warned Gwen about freshers’ flu, she had thought it was just another way of saying ‘hungover’.
Gwen had a stomach of iron and could usually shake off the worst hangovers with an bacon sandwich swimming in ketchup and grease. So when she set off for uni, ready to throw herself into a pit of hedonism that would rival Sodom and Gomorrah, she had no fear for any measly freshers’ flu.
@reverse-the-jellybaby fancy giving it a go? :)
