kuya is a tagalog honorific that means older brother or male. usually, when we buy from food stores/vendors, we call the male staff/cashier kuya. if we don't know the person's name, sometimes we attach the food item they sell to the honorific.

so in literal translation, kuya siopao = siopao brother. it's nothing offensive, but of course, most of us would prefer to be called by our names. (though some vendors tend to own these nicknames hahaha)

i have fond memories of an "ate siomai" in my high school canteen. she had the best fried siomai, rice, and chili garlic sauce!

siopao is the filipino equivalent of meat buns/baozi, and siomai is how we refer to shumai.

Thinking about what honorifics people used on Riko while speaking to him in japanese. The master probably used -kun, never something like -chan ecc not even as a very young kid.

He and kevin then started living together at like 8/9, and are the same age, so it should be -kun BUT i can see either Riko demanding -san from the start, or later on.

From jean he'd ask for something even higher, like -sama. Would he have to switch it out for something else when the Master is also present?

The master would be referred to as -sama too, for obvious reasons.

I only have a vague knowledge of japanese though so if someone with more knowledge wants to express an opinion please add on.

Would there be a difference in how riko referred to the master vs other people? (Think maybe like, subordinates of the moriyama family). What would these subordinates use on Riko? Would they have to use something else on Tetsuji when Kengo is present, or can they both be sama?

fencer things i hc the team as doing:

seiji is one of those people who do the little high jumps before the start of a bout and who are bouncing back and forth during it

aiden and eugene flick on their own foot to check whether all the electrical is working, meanwhile harvard/seiji hit the ground outside the strip

nicholas doesn't scream during high tension points but he does gesture/pump his fist/ect.

eugene and aiden instead do scream (to harvard's dismay). seiji only screams at the end of an important bout like a final.

harvard for sure gives firm handshakes at the end of a match and does the full greeting before (a little sloppy bc no one does it perfectly) (except for seiji who does it perfectly)

eugene hugs/high fives other athletes he knows at the end of a bout, no matter who wins or who looses

eugene is also a wrist/foot hitter (canon amazing accuracy) and is strong enough to knock a blade to the side easily. he also rarely bounces his blade and has a very firm stance

nicholas accidentally hits the ground an embarassing amount of times (and the score table, and the score machine, and gets tangled in people's cables/gloves)

aiden doesn't try to get into close combat situations but when he does he is very good at drawing his blade out and hitting once, cleanly

nicholas on the other hand does riposte after riposte and it WORKS. he understands very well the "it's not over until the referee says something" rule

aiden loves a bitch ass everyone-will-hate-you move like a third disengagement and flick to the back. or a flick to the wrist. or a flèche right at the beginning of a bout

coach is the kind to smile and go shake the hands of both the rival coach and fencer, only to turn around and rip the team's performance to pieces

but also, she's the kind to grab the waterbottle of whoever is fencing during the one minute pause and have them drink while she explains tactic changes (without an epée in hand, just directly with her arm)

eugene is the type to hit everyone in the foot/shin when he's walking by to get their attention

similarly aiden and harvard are poking each other when either are fencing non-serious bouts, nicholas tried to do so once with seiji and was immediately destroyed by a glare with the power of a thousand suns (all during practice ofc)

aiden is a feinter extraordinaire. harvard is one of the few who never follows these feints/lounges past them (other than seiji who is just a great fencer)

aiden has been yellow carded for having his hair poke out from his mask before, meanwhile harvard is likely to be yellow carded for the one minute inaction rule. nicholas is most likely to get yellow carded for close combat. eugene and seiji understand the damn rules and don't get carded often
