Wool & lana
The word lana (wool) in languages such as Spanish is etymologically related to English wool. For words to be related, they don't have to look like each other. Instead, you have to be able to trace them back to the same ancestor through regular sound changes - and that's what linguists managed to do with wool and lana. The infographic shows the Germanic and Romance family trees of these words.

I have seen a bunch of positivity/appreciation/whatever for fanwriters/artists but like. remember to appreciate your scanlators/translators. like the scanlating scene is not what it used to be because the official sources have picked up lot of like. popular mangas but you still rely on scanlators etc for more niche works and... I used to do lot of scanlating and I don't think I EVER got a positive comment or any appreciation and like... at least when I write and share my unhinged fic or art I made it to amuse myself but if I am scanlating a comic I already can read it obviously so ANY work I am putting in is 100% for other people... I have literally scanlated whole-ass series because I knew ONE person read them at all and I wanted them to experience a series I liked. If people don't like your work tho why would anyone do it then?
#i keep being bombarded in my most popular sideblog for scanlation requests to this day#which is a fandom that got a recent english adaptation with lot of non english source material#the anglophone entitlement tho omg#the amoutn of people getting mad at me for brazilian portuguese existing??? what do you want me to do about it#and every comment i ever got about my translation was a complaint or disagreement

Mike: I think I know you from somewhere very distant…
Amzet: Yeah, you know who I am? I do know who you are.
Mike: Bobby! Bobby!!! How are you, how are you Bobby? How long has it been?
Mike reunites with an old friend (in another universe)! :')
#Mikethelink#QSMP#Bobby#Amzet#Hormigeo#May 29 2024#Mike#love that he called him ''Bobby'' for a minute before remembering ''oh wait''#He complimented Bobby's jokes... :')#For those who don't know: Amzet was Bobby's admin!#Sorry this isn't a full transcript I'm listening to Mike speaking Spanish Portuguese and English right now and my brain is a bit scrambled#feel free to add a transcript / translation though!#I don't think I'll have a chance to get back to this until way later#(assuming I don't forget OTL)

Honestly at this point I kinda want a boyfriend just so I can squeeze him and hug him and hold him and caress him and hold his face in my hands and run my hands through his hair and and and
#my post#its so frustrating that describing a specific kind of platonic nonsexual cuddling uses so many words in english#in portuguese its 'cafuné' and boom#active nonsexual platonic cuddling where you're using ur hands

i drew this back in 2019 and never colored it until now.
#erasermic#aizawa shouta#yamada hizashi#eraserhead#present mic#eri#bnha#art#fanart#digital art#comic#dadzawa#dadmic#so in fanfic i see a lot of them divided into papa and daddy#or variants on that#like i know papa is also used in japanese#but i wish there was more involved with tosan or otosan#because for me at least the japanese/english divide makes the most sense#because personally one grandmother is Vôvó (portuguese) and the other grandmother is Abuelita (spanish)#and i know that other people use like Nonna or babushka#so the most obvious divide is language

it’s imperative to me that all the non-portuguese speakers know about the portuguese slang “coringar” which literally translates to “to become the joker” or “to have a joker moment” and yes it can be conjugated into whatever tense you like (“conringei” = i had a joker moment, “coringando” = having a joker moment, etc). forever and cellbit use it fairly often and i KNOW the translator won’t be able to pick them up so i need to make it known somehow
#icarus speaks#the fact that it’s not just a Word in english upsets me so much#i have to say a full phrase to get across what i could say in one word in portuguese

I love how supportive fit is when it comes to pac's english, it's 100% his teacher brain taking over but it's so nice to see if pac ever struggles with a word, fit'll pronounce it clearly for him and sometimes tell him more about the specifics of the word for fun. Things can sometimes come off as condescending when it comes to language corrections, but he always turns it into more of an informative moment, it's very cool :)
Same with fit asking abt portuguese words too, it was rlly nice to see pac sharing some stuff about minas gerais after helping w fit's pronunciation, I love it when ppl exchange language stuff man
#watching fit telling pac abt the origin of the word doppleganger spurred this on#this bald man will Not let pac shit talk his english levels#pac's english is incredibly good#good shit#and the way fit has just adopted some portuguese words into his streams#pactw#fitmc

Sí, oui, òc!
Italian sì, Spanish sí, Portuguese sim and many more Romance words for 'yes' come from Latin sīc, which meant 'so; thus; like that'. In Popular Latin it got an extra meaning: 'yes', born out of the sense 'like that', i.e. 'like you said'.
French oui has a completely different origin. It comes from Old French oïl, a univerbation of o il, literally 'yes, it (is/does/has etc.)'.
O stemmed from Latin hoc (this), which became òc (yes) in Occitan, a group of languages whose name was derived from this very word.
