the way that i can always tell if dan is saying “phan” or “fan” rattles me to my core every time. he aspirates the FUCK out of that voiceless labiodental fricative so violently it’s practically a voiced consonant am i right, ling phannies 😝
#another niche ass post about linguistics#i need to start the field of phanology so bad#the phield of phanology#/fæn/ vs /fʰæn/ but i feel like there’s even more of a difference for transciption#like they both hold the /f/ longer and with more emphasis#idk how to transcribe it other than adding the aspiration symbol#i don’t have a fancy english language and linguistics degree from the university of york like mr amazing or anything#dan and phil#dnp#phan#dan howell#daniel howell#amazingphil#phil lester#danisnotonfire#yeet my deenp#yeet my deet#lingblr#ipa#international phonetic alphabet#pp42??

i feel bad when non-native English speakers apologise for making mistakes or getting confused like babe no you're doing great. this isn't on you. the fact that I've seen so many native English speakers mispronounce the word pronunciation and misspell the word spelling should tell you everything you need to know about this goddamn language.
#weirdly specific but ok#asmi#english#linguistics#pronunciation#english speaking#english spelling#english is weird#as someone whose first language is english#mad respect to everyone for whom it's not#you're doing great#the language is not#i love english#but... well#english language#language stuff#phonetics#language#english is a funny language

my beef with ipa comes down to the fact that i simply do not like, conceptually, that there is a contrived writing system intended to capture every single sound in human language. i would much rather just mix scripts (like throwing a fully english word into a korean sentence and vice versa) i UNDERSTAND why we don't (thus i can forgive romanization etc [to a degree]) and i also understand why in academic contexts such a writing system is quite valuable.
in actual life, however, there is simply no need to represent all those sounds, and you're simply better off learning the native scripts of languages whose influence you encounter frequently
#the thing is we literally DO script mix when it comes to other languages based off the latin script#like ñ does not exist in english#and we certainly could spell it phonetically as ny (like in tagalog) or gn (like in italian)#and we DON'T we chose to learn and incorporate the spanish ñ#of course when you get into structurally different writing systems like hangul which use a syllable block#you can't just accept an individual letter#and so again i can forgive romanization i just don't like it#but if you're going to be frequently encountering korean words literally just put in the 3 hours it takes to learn to read it#and save yourself a headache#anyway death to ipa#thank you for coming to my ted talk

dreamt that I went to see the lm musical but for some reason they'd decided to add an entire section that musicalized the argot digression I think in the middle of the second of look down & they had actors who had just been in the crowd for that one come forward to play the various 'characters' in it but more importantly they also had actors who were playing the words themselves
#i think they also had signs with yhe french word + the english translation + the phonetic alphabet pronunciation + the dictionary definition#<- the audience was audibly grumbling & murmuring abt this#thoughts#my mom was also there bc i for real am going to take her to see lm soonish (probably this inspired the dream) & was not impressed#i think i remember enjoying it if only for ingenuity & that they'd somehow made the Words like. personified caricatures in 1830s clothing

never understood how ‘fook’ was supposed to represent how irish and northern english people say ‘fuck’. we say it fucking normally? like how it’s already written, in fact?
#like the sourthern english have more ah in their uh vowel but surely the difference is tiny? why does it merit phonetic rendering???#bizarre

I kinda love that even in the non voice acted dialogue, Ryunosuke still speaks with an obvious English accent/dialect, and he seems to be kinda just picking it up from the English people around him as a way of fitting in better. Just got him thinking "It was bothering me before, this was" which isn't phrasing I've ever heard from an American. It's very distinctly English phrasing to me.
This also actually implies a bit about his education, because it would indicate that his English teacher in Japan was from England.
#ace attorney#the great ace attorney#ryunosuke naruhodo#jinx plays tgaa#dialects are a good way to tell you where a character is from without phonetically typing an accent#england english is different from american english for example#like if i see a character call an elevator a lift im going to assume theyre british because of dialect differences in america vs england#basically i love tgaa for using dialects to make accents obvious instead of phoentically typing accents#(to be clear tgaa isnt the first time this is done in an ace attorney game.#the original trilogy kinda does it and apollo justice also does it)

niche ass post feel free to disregard:
as a linguistics nerd, it’s always fascinating to me how dan and phil both manage to mispronounce so many words but always in a different way to each other. like “consummate” in the most recent dapg vid? dan pronouncing it consjumate/consyoomate and phil pronouncing it conʃumate/conshewmate and neither of them acknowledging they said different words? adding a palatal approximate (/j/ or “ya”) i can excuse kind of but i cannot find a single instance of adding a postalvelar fricative (/ʃ/ or “sh”) being accepted pronunciation. oh to be a fly on the wall in the phouse getting to gather linguistic data on them, then making a corpus of phanology (phorpus, if you will) <3
#jk i would not want to be a fly on the wall in the phouse#if for whatever reason i was ever invited to the phouse i’d say no thank you#dnp#dan and phil#phan#lingblr#linguistics#phanology#convergence#at this point dan and phil use a pidgin version of english only they know#good for them my best friend (who is getting the same degree as phil did) also have our own pidgin#this was the least pretentious way i could write this post btw#be thankful i didn’t write consummate in ipa#i can in the tags i guess#dan: /kɒnsjumeɪt/#phil: /kɔnʃʊmeɪt/#that’s my transcription but i also can’t hear lmao so who knows#yeet my deenp#yeet my deet#international phonetic alphabet#ipa#pp42??
