THE MCLAREN TECHNOLOGY CENTRE

A small group of kids eagerly gathered around as Y/N stood by a whiteboard, marker in hand. She had been asked by the Mclaren media team to make a video and she gladly accepted.

“So, who here knows what a race engineer does?” she asked, grinning as a few hands shot up. “Yes! We help drivers go as fast as possible, but safely. We analyze data, make sure the car is in top condition, and—most importantly—we get to yell at them over the radio when they don’t listen to us.”

The kids giggled as she playfully rolled her eyes, mimicking a stern race engineer voice. “Oscar, box this lap. No, not next lap. This lap.”

Oscar, standing off to the side, smirked. He had expected Y/N to be good at this, but he hadn’t expected this—the way she absolutely lit up around the kids, how she made everything sound exciting, how effortlessly she engaged with them. She was completely in her element, smiling and laughing, as if she had done this a thousand times before.

“Alright, who’s got a question?” Y/N asked, turning back to the group.

A boy near the front eagerly raised his hand. “Were you the race engineer for your husband?”

The room went quiet for a split second. Y/N’s grip on the marker tightened, but her smile didn’t falter. “No, I wasn’t—”

“She was at McLaren, and he was at Red Bull!” another kid blurted out. A chorus of voices quickly followed, chiming in with facts about which teams raced against each other, completely derailing the conversation. Y/N exhaled, relieved, as the moment of awkwardness passed.

After the video wrapped up, she started packing up her things when she noticed Oscar still lingering nearby.

“Hey, Oscar,” she greeted with a small smile. “Didn’t know you’d be watching.”

“You were great,” he said simply. “The kids really liked you.”

She shrugged. “They’re fun. Easier to deal with than some drivers.”

He huffed a quiet laugh, shoving his hands into his pockets. Most people, after seeing how good she was with kids, would say something along the lines of “You’d make a great mom” or “Ever think about having kids of your own?” But Oscar didn’t say that. He knew better.

Most people thought they knew why she and Mark had divorced. That it had been the usual story—two people growing apart, life taking them in different directions. But Oscar had heard the truth from the source. And he knew that the decision hadn’t been as simple as wanting or not wanting a family. It had been about something much bigger than that. About what it would mean, what it would cost, and who would bear the weight of it.

And in the end, neither of them had won.

-Australia 2025-

"It's the first race of the long awaited 2025 Formula 1 season. Welcome back everyone," Crofty said as he camera zoomed in on the track.

"It's definitely an exciting sight to see Hamilton in a Ferrari. Not to mention his new race engineer Y/n L/n who has just moved up from F2." Martin Brundle added.

"I'm really looking forward to what the two have in store today."

"Kravitz over to you."

Ted was walking around the track attempting to speak to Lewis before the race began. He caught a glimpse of Hamilton speaking to an interviewer beside his car.

"How are you feeling about today's race?" the interviewer said, holding the mic up to Lewis.

"I'm feeling pretty confident. The car was really good in testing, we had some good pace in quali, and I'm excited to work with Y/n this season."

"Speaking of Y/n L/n, do you think it will be a big mistake for Ferrari to bring her on the team? Especially as your engineer... knowing how much is on the line?"

"She's phenomenal at what she does and I trust no one more than her to get the job done."

"Don't you think there's some other people that have more experience than she does working in motorsports...?"

"Y/n has climbed up the ranks from f4, 3, 2, and now 1 just like the rest of us. If you're suggesting that she'll be a worse engineer because she's a woman, no. She won't be."

"That's- I wasn't saying she wasn't a good engineer because she's a woman. There's always risk when bringing on a new member. I was wondering if you think the risk is worth the potential reward."

"There's of course always the possibility that your race engineer is not a good fit for you as a driver, but there's not a larger risk due to the fact that she's not a man."

The interviewer continued to stumble over his words. Lewis' PR manager walked over to him, whispered something in his ear, and they both strolled away.

The camera panned to you in your seat in the garage with your headset on, carefully analyzing the data on the screen in front of you.

"You know I've worked with a fair share of awful male engineers in my day." Martin said on his mic and Crofty laughed softly.

Lewis had won the first race of the season which caused an eruption of applause from the crowd. The team let you stand on the podium to receive the constructors cup in their honor. It was definitely a day for the history books.

Request— Oscar when they start liking their race engineer and they’ve been childhood friends so they’re close but suddenly they bring a girlfriend and it’s angst like unrequited love but happy ending together?

‘Famous F1 driver, Oscar Piastri, is dating his race engineer?’ Headlines pop up everywhere and anywhere on Oscar and his childhood best friend, turned girlfriend’s relationship. It was destined to happen, everyone betting on it years prior.

She just so happened to graduate school in enough time to join him at McLaren as his race engineer. Their relationship was under wraps before fame. Family visits kept quiet, F3 and F2 wins celebrated alone together.

When she joined the team, they posted her everywhere, one of those missed posts by fans. What wasn’t missed by fans was when she walked into the paddock and Kym Illman shot a photo of them holding hands.

Their relationship wasn’t easy by any means. They fought for over 5 years on whether it would even work out. Their calling was when she ended up in the closest place possible with him: the McLaren pit wall as his engineer.

“Os headlines will tear us apart!” She argued. He sighed at her nonsensical yelling until she got it all out. “I don’t care how ‘meant’ for each other we are, I’m going to be seen as a slut for sleeping my way into McLaren.”

“Are you done yelling at me darling?” His patience at her yelling fits always boggled her mind. How could he be so calm in this situation? “What the media assumes doesn’t concern us.” He said calm.

“What we just show up as a couple and nothing will be talked about?” She continued her tangent. “I’m not putting myself through that hell.” She slammed her hands down on the counter and he made his way toward her.

“That’s not what I said.” He was still calm, wrapping his hands around her waist when she turned to him. “Nothing can be a hell when we’re together.” He kissed her forehead and she wrapped her arms around him.

They talked out most differences and nearly never got caught. They were adults now, but when he had won the F2 championship they couldn’t hold back the bit of PDA they shared.

His eyes scanned the crowd of people among the barrier, his eyes landing on her and running to her. He wrapped his arms around the crying girl as she praised him for winning.

“I knew you could do it os.” She whispered as they touched foreheads. Luckily the crowd around them shielded the cameras out of focus, or out of frame.

Oscar shrugged off the media headlines, even when his girlfriend was actively bringing them up. It’s almost as if she believed them, believed the lies people put out about them. “Do you want to end things darling?” He seriously inquired one night as she paced the floor, nearly having a panic attack about the most recent article.

“No! Oscar I love you! I want to be with you!” She spat out quickly as a response. “I just, the headlines, the lies, it’s getting to my head and I just can’t-“ There’s the panic attack he saw coming. He was rushed to her side as she nearly fell to the floor in hysterics. “Don’t touch me!” She sobbed.

He kneeled to her figure on the floor as she sat uncomfortably on the wood. “Tell me what you need.” He said calm, he was concerned, but he would never understand how she could work herself up over things like this.

He brought her water and sat with her until the worst passed and she finally melted into his arms on the floor. He cooed loving words to her as to calm her down. When she came back to reality he brought her to their shared room and offered a shower or a bath.

“No? Do you just want to change and go to bed?” He didn’t mind taking care of her, even after she worked herself up over— what he saw as—nothing. She nodded at his words and helped her get changed into a baggy shirt and underwear.

He changed along with her and then held her in bed, covers over them to make it comfortable. He rubbed her back and traced soothing circles. He never mentioned any article she got heated from after the fact, knowing it would spark another fire within her.

Their relationship had always been complicated like this, even when it began boiling into a real thing. Oscar had brought up a girl he was talking to and went to her to tell her they were dating and her response shocked him.

“Os, I want to be with you, more than just friends.” She admitted. He blinked at her. He had just told her him and Lilly were dating. “I know you have a girlfriend now, but I’ve always wanted you.” She blinked away tears and he hugged her.

Oscar didn’t know how to comfort her, but what he did know was that he wanted her in the same way. So much so, he broke it off with Lilly the next day. She was upset, obviously, but he knew who he wanted more.

“Oscar I’m sorry about yesterday, I was overthinking and-“ He cut her off with a kiss, their first kiss. She pushed him away gently. “But, Lilly, i,“ She stuttered to him.

“I want you too, I always have.” He said back. “I told Lilly it wouldn’t work.” They didn’t get in a relationship right away, but kept it under wraps.

They were definitely meant to be, but they had a lot more downs than they had ups. All the articles and all the rumors started, didn’t matter at the end of the day. As long as they had each other in the end of it, they would be okay. It was never a question that they were meant to be in the end.

"It's definitely something," you laughed softly. "No, I love it. Susie was and continues to be a role model of mine. I'm definitely glad we have a program like F1 Academy being directed by her. I hope I can inspire girls the same way she does."

"I have one more question for you: What are your plans for the future? Was F1 the ultimate goal or is there still something you're chasing?"

"F1 was definitely the dream. It's absolutely unreal that I'm working with Ferrari and the one and only Lewis Hamilton. As far as my future, I don't have any current plans. I want to enjoy my time here before I start considering any sort of possible change."

The interviewer nodded and jotted down a few notes

"Thank you for your time Y/n." she smiled.

The Italian anthem was chanted by the Ferrari team as Lewis, Max, and Charles stood on the podium.

"Stringiamci a coorte! Siam pronti alla morte. Siam pronti alla morte, L'Italia chiamò..."

Champagne drenched your body causing confetti to stick to your hair and skin. It was certainly a battle between the three who were all tied in the points going into today's race. Lewis crossed the finish line first causing the entire atmosphere to change. The crowds and the Ferrari garage erupted in applause and gleeful cheers.

Everyone was still overjoyed as you looked down at the crowd below the podium you were standing on. You quickly pulled a few pieces of confetti off of yourself and the champagne bottle you were holding, stashing them in your pocket.

You hugged Lewis tightly as you congratulated him on his eighth world championship and he thanked you for all your hard work. It was an incredible piece of history you had the honor to be a part of.
