GE Vernova May Cut 900 Offshore Wind Jobs as It Scales Back. (New York Times)
Excerpt from this New York Times story:
The energy company GE Vernova said on Friday that it would pare back its troubled offshore wind business, which has been hit with financial losses and accidents. The changes, which are aimed at coping with a difficult environment for the wind industry, could result in around 900 job losses.
The company’s struggles are a blow to the offshore wind industry, which is a major source of electric power in northern Europe and is thought to have potential to supply large volumes of green energy to the East Coast of the United States.
A substantial downsizing of GE Vernova would leave just two main western players, Siemens Gamesa of Germany and Vestas Wind Systems of Demark — a situation that could leave the industry short of construction capacity and could push equipment prices higher, raising consumers’ bills.
GE Vernova, a spinoff from the venerable General Electric industrial conglomerate, said it had presented a proposal on Thursday for reducing the company’s size to its European Works Council, which represents its workers, a necessary step before job cuts.
The company said in an emailed statement that its new plan reflected “industrywide challenges for wind” and aimed to create “a smaller, leaner and more profitable business.”
The company declined to specify which countries’ operations would be hit hardest, but it has a large turbine factory in Saint-Nazaire, France, near the mouth of the Loire River.
A leader in land-based wind turbines, especially in the United States, GE Vernova hustled to develop a giant turbine called the Haliade-X for offshore deployment, spending $400 million.
GE Vernova may also want to focus its offshore wind business on North America, some analysts say.

i had to reblog this again to make a quick addition.
i know people despise AI, not just because of the plagiarism and the ways that it supplants real, human beings who should be doing those jobs, but also because of the energy expenditure. i realize that this doesn't address the other two issues and that's still a completely justifiable reason to call for tighter regulations and controls on AI, but in terms of the energy considerations... the VC's aren't the only ones losing money.
It’s not just tech stocks that are reeling after the release of Chinese artificial intelligence company DeepSeek’s open-source R1 model, which performs similarly to state-of-the-art models from American companies while using less expensive hardware far more efficiently. Energy and infrastructure companies — whose share prices had soared in the past year on the promise of powering a massive artificial intelligence buildout — have also seen their stock prices fall early Monday. Shares in GE Vernova, which manufactures turbines for gas-fired power plants, were down 19% in early trading Monday. Since the company’s spinoff from GE last April, the share price had risen almost 200% through last Friday, largely based on optimism about its ability to supply higher electricity demand. Oklo, the advanced nuclear company backed by OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman, is down 25%, after rising almost 300% in the past year. Constellation Energy, the independent power producer that’s re-powering Three Mile Island in partnership with Microsoft, saw its shares fall almost 20% in early trading. It had risen almost 190% in the year prior to Monday. “DeepSeek’s power implications for AI training punctures some of the capex euphoria which followed major commitments from Stargate and Meta last week,” Jefferies infrastructure analyst Graham Hunt and his colleagues wrote in a note to clients Monday. “With DeepSeek delivering performance comparable to GPT-4 for a fraction of the computing power, there are potential negative implications for the builders, as pressure on AI players to justify ever increasing capex plans could ultimately lead to a lower trajectory for data center revenue and profit growth.” Investors fear that the proliferation of cheaper, more efficient models may hurt the prospects of technology companies — and their suppliers — that are spending tens if not hundreds of billions of dollars on artificial intelligence investments.
AI is still a threat to society if there are no regulations to ensure it is tightly controlled and the proper concerns surrounding plagiarism, misinformation and appropriate use are addressed. but this is a step towards addressing some of the major, credible energy-related threats that AI poses to exacerbating the effects of runaway climate change.
"This could be an extinction-level event for venture capital firms that went all-in on foundational model companies. Particularly if those companies haven't yet productized with wide distribution."
"Investors I spoke to over the weekend aren't panicking, but they're clearly concerned. Particularly that they could be taken so off-guard. Don't be surprised if some deals in process get paused."

GE Vernova Finds Further Problems With Its Wind Turbine Blades. (New York Times)
Excerpt from this New York Times story:
GE Vernova, the maker of the wind turbine blade that shattered last summer and scattered debris on Nantucket’s beaches, said on Wednesday that it had found similar problems with other turbines, raising questions about its future role in the offshore wind business.
The company discovered that a “low single-digit” number of blades had a “manufacturing deviation” similar to that of the blade that had collapsed in July, Scott L. Strazik, the company’s chief executive, said on a call with analysts to discuss financial results.
“We’ve had a difficult four months and are disappointed given the impact on our customers and on our financial results,” Mr. Strazik said. He added that the company was “proactively strengthening” some of the blades either in the factory or in the field. The blades involved are believed to have been made at a factory in Gaspé, Quebec, although Mr. Strazik did not specifically single that plant out.
GE Vernova said it would take a $700 million charge for losses on offshore wind contracts largely related to blade failures, which have delayed Vineyard Wind, a $4 billion project that had been on course to be the first commercial offshore wind farm in waters off the United States.

Digital Twin Market, Size, Share, Key Players | BIS Research
Digital Twin  is a computer-assisted technology that helps surgeons accurately visualize and navigate the spine during surgical procedures. Similar to GPS navigation used in cars, this system provides real-time, three-dimensional (3D) imaging to guide the placement of surgical instruments and implants.
The Global Digital Twin Market size was valued at $10.3 billion in 2023, and it is expected to grow with a CAGR of 58.52%
Digital Twin  Work
Preoperative Imaging:Before the surgery, imaging techniques like CT scans or MRI are used to create a detailed map of the patient’s spine.
Registration:The navigation system aligns the preoperative images with the patient’s anatomy in the operating room. This process ensures the system’s accuracy.
Real-Time Tracking:Specialized instruments equipped with tracking markers are used during surgery. Cameras or electromagnetic systems track these markers and display their exact position on a monitor.
Dynamic Visualization:The surgeon uses the navigation system to see a 3D representation of the patient’s spine and instruments in real-time, allowing for precise placement of implants, screws, or other devices.
