Maybe I'm just stupid, but I still really want to know and I'm gonna ask anyways. When people talk about how Lan Wangji learned from his mistakes and did better post-Wei Wuxian death, what do they mean? What was Lan Wangji’s "mistake?"

As someone who once believed this, I think it’s a combination of people forgetting the timeframe in which the events in Wei Wuxian’s first life took place, shipper bias where people who want Wei Wuxian to have ended up with a “better” character make up shit to justify hating Lan Wangji as a character and thus wangxian as a couple, and just the persistent feeling one may get after reading the novel for the first time and feeling like Wei Wuxian was the only one to suffer any “real” consequences for sticking up for the Wen remnants while “no one else did.”

For the timeframe stuff: fandom has this conception (not helped by the cql fandom bleedover) that the Burial Mounds settlement days lasted longer than it did and Lan Wangji had more opportunities to help than he did. He didn’t. The Qiongqi Path labor camp liberation and Wei Wuxian’s defection and exile from the cultivation world happened within 24 hours. Lan Wangji heard that Wei Wuxian was gonna look for Wen Ning, and the next official news is that he’s defected from the Jiang and is now enemy to the cultivation world. There was absolutely no space for him to have done anything during this time.

For the part about feeling like no one else did anything: Lan Wangji speaks up publicly for Wei Wuxian. He speaks up publicly for the Wen siblings during their sham trial. He’s partially responsible for Wen Ning regaining his consciousness. He’s the reason the Wen remnants and Wei Wuxian survived three more months passed the Nightless City bloodbath. Did he give money, no, but money was never their problem. The Wen remnants needed safety and freedom, and that was not something Lan Wangji could offer them without the cooperation of the rest of the cultivation world—the very people persecuting them. People also severely overestimate the “kindness” of the Lan Clan as a whole and thus have this false idea that the Lan would have helped “if only they knew the truth.” Lan Xichen was present at the same banquet where Wei Wuxian said he would go look for Wen Ning. The Lan were at the emergency conference to discuss the labor camp situation. Lan Wangji was not privy to some super secret information that made him act in favor of Wei Wuxian; he was simply a moral man where his clan (and the others) remained festered in their unjustified need to see the Wen remnants tortured and humiliated.

As for consequences: Lan Wangji was whipped almost to death for fighting his own seniors in order to save Wei Wuxian. That’s the harshest consequence literally anyone outside of Wei Wuxian faced out of the whole situation.

Lan Wangji made no mistakes in Wei Wuxian’s first life.

Five minutes into the Prime Defenders Elementals oneshot and I was not prepared to hear Charlie’s character description wHAT DO YOU MEAN HE’S A FUCKING HUMAN DODGEBALL-

this revelation is SO crazy and SO overlooked. as of her 'the blind girl' chapter arya understands that she is a warg AND that nymeria is the source of the wolf dreams. her comment connecting the snow in her dreams to it snowing in the riverlands makes that clear. theres no other reason for her to assume thats where her dreams are taking place. but it isnt a dream for arya anymore. it is reality. thats why she is able to use it to her advantage with the cat while spying on the lyseni slavers and to gain the upper hand against the kindly man. arya finally knows she is a skinchanger and she is ready to use her powers. she is also concealing this from the faceless men. arya's skinchanging abilities are a factor i do not think they are accounting for at all. therefore she will likely continue to use it to her advantage.

arya recognizing her warg connection to nymeria feels like a crucial piece of information for her going into twow. it suggests that there will be big developments for arya and the wolf pack in that book. hopefully a reunion between arya and nymeria by the end.

i believe that my appreciation of post-apocalyptic literature is derived from that i am reading about a world defined by suffering and comprehend + often agree with the authors intent to relate this to reality (you've maybe read that post about how post-apocalyptic lit is not meant to predict the future, but rather criticize the present?) but i also recognize that i am reading a book. if am engaging in art, there is definitive purpose to human existence. its just a calming juxtaposition that reminds me that the inherent pain of living is worthwhile

Gaudy Night is such a weird little novel. Sets up a whole mystery on—what all the characters think is—the premise that the celibate life makes you insane because you're repressed, then it turns out actually valuing marital love over detached devotion to Truth is what makes you insane and celibacy is fine. And this frees up the main character to decide to throw over celibacy and get married, which she can do without going insane either cause she has detachment.

Listen. Listen. If you're thinking I like bottom surgery option except x thing. Chances are you can either not do or actually do x thing. Especially if you've not actually done research into it. Look into your options before you decide x thing has to be true.

It might make healing harder or be more difficult to find a surgeon who is willing to do so, but most of the time x thing isn't actually a hard and fast element.

Thinking how Monsieur and Madame Thenardier hate themselves so much, that they abuse and neglect their own children especially after the Thenardiers got bankrupt, because their own kids look like a mix of both Monsieur and Madame Thenardier in spades

And that contributes to Eponine's self loathing arc cuz she has a striking resemblance to her biological mother, whom she despised. Sometimes Eponine can't bear to look at her reflection because her self hatred made her believe she was ' ugly '

It wasn't until the Thenardier sibs began to receive kindness from outside the Thenardier circles did they realize that they aren't in fact ugly, and Eponine realizes that she is beautiful in her own way.

Meanwhile Cosette, who believed that her mother was an angel from Heaven for most of her life, and after an intensive healing period, she came to believe herself as ' pretty ' because of how her mother's goodness lived through. Only to later on realize that her mother is actually a flawed, messy but ultimately good person. That is going to be a shock for Cosette at first since she placed her mother at such a high pedestal, but she came to understand and accept her mother even more

Thinking how Eponine thought herself as a ' devil ' due to self hatred. But the truth is she is a deeply flawed but fundamentally good soul who needs healing.

Thinking how, since adoption, nearly everyone around Cosette coddled and overprotected her and viewed her as a pure, innocent angel. But Cosette is also wild and brave at heart. And as much as she is grateful and appreciative of the nuns, Valjean and Marius, I believe a part of her also wants to go about and explore more after the June Rebellion, just as a reconciliation for her soul. There is a foundation of wildness and bravery in her.

Thinking how Eponine literally can't forgive herself for bullying Cosette in the past for a time, only for Cosette to already forgiven Eponine and Azelma and grieved for their misfortunes. I bet Cosette also mourned for Eponine's death, not just out of trauma survivor solidarity, but of the life Eponine could have had if she survived.

Thinking how Eponine built walls as a survival mechanism, only to realize that there is power in softness too

Thinking how Cosette clung onto pacifism and embracing ' ladylike virtues ' as a coping and surviving mechanism, only for her to become much braver as the June Rebellion goes on - not in a warrior's way, but in a more pacifistic activist way, as she came to do charity work and then helps nurse Marius back to health

I think there is also an element of frustration here in Cosette that how everyone else seem to shield her from darker aspects of things in fear of breaking her heart even more. While they do mean well, Cosette would have understood more if the truths are more revealed to her. Valjean and Marius are so scared to push Cosette away if the darker truths are revealed....but Cosette still loves and cares for them anyway and forgives them for such trespasses. She just wished she was told of these things sooner.

Any sliver of hope you had of staying connected with him is gone, because the entirety of his essence is now gone. She’s stronger than me, I would have never given him up so easily. I admire that about her.
