Three ships you like - Just off the top of my head, Buddie (Buck x Eddie from 9-1-1), Marvey (Mike x Harvey from Suits) and Chenford (Lucy Chen x Tim Bradford from The Rookie). I have so many more, lol.

First ship ever - These are all from roughly the same time, and I was only a kid at the time, so I’m not sure which came first, but I’d say Maddie Hayes x David Addison from Moonlighting, Jim Dempsey x Harriet ‘Harry’ Makepeace from Dempsey & Makepeace, and Anne Shirley x Gilbert Blythe from the 1985 made-for-television adaptation of Anne of Green Gables and its 1987 sequel. In my teenage years, I seriously shipped Benton Fraser x Ray Vecchio from Due South.

Last song you heard - I stopped at the Tesco Express on my way home from work earlier to see if they had anything I fancied for dinner (spoiler alert - they didn’t) and You Can Get It If You Really Want came on over the sound system, much to the seeming delight of everyone in the store because we all started humming, whistling and, in the case of one customer, even singing along. Oh, and it was the Jimmy Cliff version, not the Desmond Dekker one, or at least it sounded like it.

Favourite childhood book - Ooh, that’s a difficult one! I devoured books as a child (a habit I’ve been getting back into this year and last) and I don’t know if I could pick just one.

Currently reading - The Binding Room by Nadine Matheson (the sequel to The Jigsaw Man, which I just finished earlier this week), and I’m also making my way through a book of short stories called That Was A Shiver, and Other Stories by James Kelman.

Currently watching - I finally got around to watching the last half of the last season of The Blacklist this week, watching the very last episode just last night. I’m also watching reruns of The Closer and the original The Twilight Zone, as well the current seasons of Death in Paradise, Murdoch Mysteries, N.C.I.S. and Law & Order. I’m also watching Tatort Saarbrücken, but I’m trying to make the episodes last because there’s only five of them and the next one doesn’t air until January! I have a whole stack of other stuff I still have to get around to as well, but there’s only so many hours in the day.

Currently consuming - A tin of Pepsi Max.

Currently craving - Ice cream, even though it’s really cold here at the moment.

Scene transitions to Edward at Knapford Station

Narrator: One day, Edward was at Knapford Station, until an Orange Tank Engine puffed up next to him

The orange tank engine puffed up next to Edward, he has a nameplate named Billy on his sides

Billy: *whistles* Hello! I’m Billy! The new engine! Let’s go!

Edward: Whoa there Billy! We can’t leave yet, we need to wait for Sir Topham Hatt!

Billy: Why?

Edward: Because those are orders

Just then, Sir Topham Hatt appeared out of his office

STH: Ah, there you are Billy, my new engine! Right, I want you to go with Edward and he’ll show you around the island

Just then, they see black smoke

Billy: Huh? *puffs off to find the black smoke*

Scene transitions to Billy arriving at the scene and sees Dennis

Narrator: Soon, Billy came to the scene of the smoke

Billy: Are you ok?

Dennis: No! I felt sick as I took on bad oil! I can’t make it to Vicarstown Sheds today, can you push me there?

Billy: Of course! *he buffered up behind Dennis and blew his whistle as he shunts Dennis to Vicarstown*

Edward: *follows Billy shunting Dennis* Billy wait!

Scene transitions to Billy and Dennis arriving at Vicarstown Yards, where Murdoch and Flora are there

Narrator: Later, Billy shunted Dennis all the way to Vicarstown

Dennis: Thank you-

Charlie: *sees Billy* Billy?!

Just establishing my own timeline here

Murdoch had an alcoholic & (not physically) abusive father. (Who was still alive as of season 1.) (They had lost touch until partway thru season 1.)

Born in Nova Scotia. Grew up there & liked spruce beer.

Father was a fisherman.

Mom passed away when he was a little kid (I'd say 5-7 years old?)

Murdoch was taken away by nuns. Dad wanted to write but didn't know where.

Murdoch kids lived with their aunt.

fr keegan. William burned down his shed at 12 & rebuilt it in the month all by himself. Youth was a daydreamer.

Um when he was an altar server there was a shipwreck & then started taking notes for fr keegan. Also a birth in the room next door. tf dude. He know how to pray in some latin. Witnessed a woman dying & telling her confession?? Also there was a bunch of money in the hem of the coat. Taught him deduction.

Yo shik he’s solving his first murder investigation at 12 years old!

Keegan left nova scotia right after murdoch

He left home at 17 to go to a logging camp.

18yo  murdoch’s friend (didn’t) kill someone on a night he was drunk. Later, he held someone down while his leg was being amputated (from getting it caught in a log jammer). Still has nightmares 30y later

(between 62 & 65 this guy was killed. It was 35 years ago. Present day is 1897-1900 as of season 4)

He also had a job as a ranch hand at some point.

He has a sister who joined a convent at 14 & joined cloistered nuns in Montreal.

He is roman catholic in a city of protestants.

He went to college at some point where he met Eddy Cullen & were they both planning on joining the seminary? -- “So u’r a detective now?” ‘beats logging. I tried to write you at the seminary after jesuit school.’ “nah I got married.” -- so they went to jesuit school together, will went logging, eddy went to the seminary, then they lost touch. right? -- “still do any boxing?” ‘no I see enough of that in my career (on the streets).’ “I thought fr obrien beat it out of you.” ‘did a week ever go by that we didn’t see the inside of his office?’ “no” -- so he was a boxer & he got in trouble often. -- “fancy a pint?” ‘i’m on duty, maybe another time /lie’ “body is still the lord’s temple eh will?” -- ‘I haven’t spoken to him in 20 years’

I really enjoyed seeing the 48 Hrs films all the way through for the first time ever. They wet the first 'buddy cop movies' or 'buddy films'.

It was a total change to the blaxploitation movies of the 70s where the black character had to fight the man in their own neighborhoods. Eddie Murphy's character was on their turf, his character gave it as well as he got it. And they were equally clever and tough and helped shift the status quo.

And they'd give way for Beverly Hills Cop, Lethal Weapon, Die Hard, Rush Hour...

While some of the language in the film is shocking today, Murphy argues the film was a big step forward. “I’m the first black actor to take charge in a white world onscreen. That’s why I became as popular as I became… People had never seen that before. Black-exploitation movies, even if you dealt with the Man, it was in your neighborhood, never in their world.”

Nolte has also heralded the movie as ground-breaking, calling 48 Hrs. “the first film where the black and the white criticize each other. After Civil Rights, it was very awkward for whites and blacks. We didn’t know how to talk to each other.” He also noted that the racist remarks between his and Murphy’s characters went both ways.

The wildest epiphany I had was that watching 48 HRS. (1982) [Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy] and all the racial tension, prejudices, and pejoratives in the story are less agitational than things are in real life now in 2023.

It's a fictional situation, but movies reflect the society's atmosphere of the times they're made.

And yeah, you have to take into account co-stars saying these things not meaning them, using them only for the portrayal of their character. Even if they could have personal views like that, they're not that way with their costars. Especially when Eddie Murphy said Nick Nolte was like a big brother figure to him in his first ever acting role in a movie.

But now the attitudes of decency have gone to hell, it's with truly hateful venom and willful ignorance and unabashed entitlement and piousness these things are done. And for real. Not some movie.

The present reality is sour.

I don't like to say "those were the days", or "these kids/people today", or "back in my day" because that's horseshit way of talking or thinking.

The same people use the past that way to give themselves permission to be worse than any time before.

All the improvements society in America and in general have made the last few decades, are not perfect either, but got rolled back and twisted ugly because some racist fool billionaire that paints his skin orange got presidential power and a multinational stage to encourage his ignorance in others. It's a sad infection. Masquerading as patriotism.

So, in some strange fool way, I wish things could return to form, but keep the improvements made over the last decades. No more of the proud pompous intolerance and disgusting hate. And allowing its encouragement by players like FOXNews and the Murdoch media empire.
