JUPITER through the houses: Where do things happen easily for you in life ? 🍀🎰🔑
Jupiter naturally represents one’s fortune. The house Jupiter resides in one’s birth chart depicts the individual’s “luck” in life.
But one can liken “luck” and “fortune” as circumstances where things just happen to work out for you and you gain things “easily”.
This is due to Jupiter’s innate supportive nature, blessing natives with favorable circumstances wherever he resides.
Where Saturn restricts and pushes one to put in effort, Jupiter’s nature is supportive and generous with fortune.
Check the house you have Jupiter in ➡️

How to learn how to use the planetary transits 🧵
First, you need to know how to track the transits in your chart - cause that's what matters the most if you want to take advantage of certain transits and be able to mitigate the effects or some others. You can use Placidus or WHS - WHS is easier when you start. And that's when you should definitely use your wheel chart : it's very easy to track transits by looking at it imo. for ex: you have an aries 2H in whs ? well, the sun is currently in aries, thus transiting your 2H (easy, right ?) - and it's the same for all the planets.
Now, let's see how it could benefit you on a daily basis : let's talk about the planets and how each of them can be used for different things.
Imo, the easier planet to use for quick results is the Moon as it's the fastest one : like, you need to send resumes to find a new job ? do it when the Moon is transiting your 6H or 10H for quick results (it works, my family and friends still thank me for that advice hahaha).
Also, what's good to know is that even if some Moon transits don't feel the best or brought annoying shit, at least it won't last for ever - maximum 2 days - so there's that.
The Moon is for quick plans, not too elaborate.
The Sun is the planet changing sign each month (using tropical or sidereal), introducing each season - like rn in tropical the Sun is in Aries, it's Aries season. The Sun can help with the general vibes of that period, as it's staying in one house for 30 days in WHS.
Each zodiac season usually brings similar topics for the native - you being aware of it or not - and it could be good to journal about it to see if some things are coming back. ex: when the Sun transits our 5H, it can be a more romantic time, good for creating art too.
Because YES, the houses are important here and that's why you have to study the topics they're linked to - if you haven't already, now is the right time hahaha. Learning more about the houses AND being able to use transits for good, cool things to do tbh.
For the other personal planets :
✨ Mercury = convos and thoughts about the concerned house topics, could bring more travels esp if it's transiting your 3H or 9H (good time to plan one when it happens). Be aware of Mercury Rx periods, as it happens 3x times a year.
Mercury transiting your 5H can be good for finding new ideas and inspiration for the art you're creating (what you're drawing, painting, writing etc). Mercury transiting your 8H can be good for sensitive convos - telling someone a secret, finally opening up to them etc.
✨ Venus = love, aesthetics, finances; it will particularly impact how you're handling that based on the house it's transiting. ex: Venus 5H ? Good transit to find a cool gift for a child or a lover; good for buying sexy lingerie and sex toys.
Venus transiting your 4H can be a good time to redecorate your home. Venus transiting your 11H can be a good time to organize a party - people will most likely have fun and love it haha.
✨ Mars = motivation, strength, sex drive, anger, fighting for. Well, it could show why and how you could start fights (physical or not) so be careful - like, Mars transiting your 3H ? seriously, watch your mouth.
But it's also a good time to complete a project, feel more motivated - Mars transiting your 6H or 10H ? could be good for you work-wise. Also Mars transiting your 1H or 6H ? good time to start going to the gym regularly - Mars is also physical activity.
For the slower planets that aren't the generational ones - so Jupiter and Saturn - long-term plans can be discussed and it's interesting to see how it will unravel. Those transits are always very interesting to track : Jupiter comes back to the same sign every 12 yo, Saturn every 27-29 yo.

So I did a thing last weekend, I bought a "new" trailer. I realized last summer that my trusty 2 horse diamond D just wasn't going to be enough trailer post college (graduated Dec '23), but I was going to need a bigger truck first. Finally found one earlier this month, so I started trailer shopping. Stumbled across this trailer after wasting my time trying to buy a different one. This wasn't 100% what I wanted, but it was the best I was going to find in my budget.
2003 titan renegade 4h. 6ft short wall in the LQ area, which is a bit bigger than I wanted, but I probably won't out grow it as fast. Permanent back tack (my least favorite feature since I ride a lot of colts). And since it's all steel, the trailer plus 3-4 horses (depends on the horses) is pretty much the max of what my truck can safely tow, so its a little heavy. It does need some work, but the majority is cosmetic (back doors are the main issues and they will take some new steel).
I'm going to try to do a majority of the work to fix it up myself, so I'm going to use Tumblr to document my progress. I've made a priority list of things that need fixed based off of what needs done for me to feel safe hauling with it and what needs done to preserve the trailer. And that list is:
1. Light plug. The current one is looking worse for wear, full of grease and dirt, and keeps disconnecting from my truck when I go down the road.
2. Bearings. Supposedly they were redone recently, however the dust caps are the EZ lube kind and the rubber plugs are all very dry rotten and falling out, so I have a hard time believing they were actually redone.
3. Roof. All of the sealant has dry rotted and fallen away and the seams are starting to rust. So I'm for sure resealing, and more than likely just going to bite the bullet and strip and repaint it. Actually, every seam on the trailer needs to be redone, but I won't do the sides until I find a paint that matches perfectly, or I feel confident enough in my ability to strip and repaint that I'm willing to redo the entire trailer. I guess if I decide to repaint, I could go light gray to match my truck.
4. Strip the rust and paint around the back door and escape door (might do this before the roof to get a better feel for my tools). Also repaint the slants (they need it and easy project to start on)
5. Find someone to fix the doors (probably a winter project
Other things to do as I have time
- add blanket rack to tack room
- insulate and wall LQ
- add pads to slants to protect the paint
- new mats?
-new flooring in the LQ
- redo interior lights
- probably forgetting a ton
I own the trailer free and clear, and I'll have my truck paid off in 3 years, so I figured once the truck is paid off, I would re-evaluate and decide if I wanted to look for a truck that was a big bigger and could handle it better or if I wanted to part with the trailer (for more than what I paid and put into for work) and look for something similar in horse # and size, but lighter.
But here's where I'm starting

Last one of the month!
So this one was an unexpected surprise... Essentially, woke up in the middle of the night with an insane idea, could not go back to sleep, wrote/coded for 4h (and spent 4h-ish the next day to translate), and BAM! this happened.
You can find the game here! I've shoved it into 3 ranked jam (well, two, but one of them for 2 diff languages), if you want to vote for it too...
small note: essentially half the plan was scrapped because of time constrains. I might do an extended version in the future?
Current wordcount : 9.327 (FR) + 920 3.898 (EN) new Coding update : 20% change
Oh boy, did we manage to do some things this week for this one!! I wasn't able to add much in the French version (it is still incomplete), so I focused on the translation, filling the gap for the former when needed. This meant I could clear out the first beat of the game, and part of the second one (currently working on it). I am about 1/3rd fully complete. I also worked a bit on the UI, fixing the sizing (essentially copy/pasting the template again) and adding themes.
Will it be ready for EctoComp? I have two more days to try!
After reviewing 40 IFComp entries, I am tapping out for now. There are still 3 more weeks left, so I might play but not review them. It is a bit more than half of the entries, and more than last year… So many long entries. I'm tired.
~
I did an AMA last Friday, and answered all your burning questions until there were no more (about 2h). It was loads of fun! Thanks again for sending questions :)
~
What's happening in the IF sphere:
Speaking of the IFComp: 3 more weeks to play and vote for 5 games! If you have about 2h to spare... there are a handful of 15min entries :)
The voting for the inkJam is underway (wink, wink, scroll above): there is a 5-game voting queue before you can vote for any other entries.
The entries of the EctoComps are about the be released. This is ALSO a ranked jam, so consider voting for a few. La Petite Mort category are games created under 4hs, so they are usually fairly short.
Last chance to enter the Bare-Bones Jam!
Missed a jam deadline or you have a concept you're not sure you can finish? Throw it to the @seedcomp-if.
~
Now, there's a lot I've been wanting to reorganise with the way I've been sharing progress/communicate and where, especially since working on revamping @crimsonroseandwhitelily.
This is pretty long, so I stuffed it all under the break.
First order of business: Monthly check-ins A shortened version of the monthly check-in will be publish on itch from next month on, on the first of each month (unless IRL gets in the way). It will recap what I did the previous month and the plan for the next one, as well as other news of what I am organising/doing aside from game-making. The longer versions going into more details and wishy-washy feelings, also including fun events to participate in and recaps. You know, the usual. Those too, will be posted on the 1st of every month. I'll also have separate posts for jam announcement.
Second: Weekly check-ins These will continue to be published every Sundays (usually mornings EST), even if Sunday is the 1st of the month (will be up before the monthly check-in). The format won't change: recap of progress on projects, other stuff to mention, maybe some events to participate in.
Third: AMA I've been doing AMAs at hella random times, and on a whim, but I'd like to do those more often, because they are fun, and with a more set date/time, so more of you can participate/not miss it (like I did last Friday). Maybe once a month type of thing, around the start or end of the month probably. I'll at least do one more before Christmas.
Fourth: Where else to get updates I've tried out a bunch of places, and while Tumblr feels the most easy/comfortable right now, I don't want to rely on one place only to share releases and big updates (who knows what will happen to Tumblr). I want peeps to be able to have options about where they can get news/updates (esp if you don't want to create an account on a specific website). I'll need to update the nav post about this (maybe have a carrd? or mailing list?), and be more consistent about updating all these places. I need to find some log-ins again... For now, Tumblr will be the most comprehensive one. And I'm not updating Twitter, btw.
Fifth: Update calendar So this year has been so far pretty different from what I hoped to do (mainly because I've participated in so/too many jams), good progress has been done in some places, none in others. That's on me, obviously, I get distracted by new ideas. I can't promise that next year will be much different and that I will stick to a rigorous calendar of updates. Time management and hobbies are like oil and water... But I want to be more careful with how I map my year and where I put effort. Working on remasters and participating in jams has shown me I can do quite a bit in short spurs. And I think I could manage to close more small WiPs if I put my eggs in order (participating in jams/comps usually stops quite a bit of that progress). I think coming to term with leaving some projects be would help a ton. Not everything needs a remaster/update.
Sixth: Itch Pages Update + Trailers? With each remasters, I've tried to be more consistent with the formatting of the itch game page, with screenshots and links to relevant pages. While this should be something to do from the start (with the OG release), with the way I've been release things, I can at least try to make it happen after release. I've struggled a bit for some entries in what to include, ngl. Text-based game seems much duller than non-IF. Also, and somewhat related, I'd like to make trailers for some of the games, mainly the longer completed ones. Also because they look neat and I've never done that before. I have no idea where to start, how to do them, or what to include, but I'm excited to learn! But realistically, this won't be something I'll start this year...
Seventh: Stop with this jam nonsense. So this is more something that's been requested by anons relentlessly in my inbox (esp CRWL's inbox, which I've been deleting every time), than me actually stopping participating in jams. First of all, lol at those request. I participate in/organise them because it's fun and it makes me want to create more not before I personally want to make you suffer by making you wait for months for an update (legit got this as a message). Should I calm down with participating in jams? Maybe. I've made 9 new games this year alone (not counting promps and templates), with varying length and completion (1 is incomplete, 2 needs fixing, at least 1 should be longer), which 50% more than last year. It's not sustainable for me to do the same next year, especially if I want to finish more of my WIPs (I can't just add more to the pile). We will see what next year brings in terms of jams... I will probably submit an entry to multiple jams. Jam FOMO is real...
Eighth: Blog(s) regorganising I've started with CRWL already (it's back up with limited posts), and it will take a bit of time to have everything back in tip top shape. Aside from purging/re-writing posts, I'll also be updating the interface (I'm thinking or re-wroking it from scratch) to make it more mobile friendly. The same will happen at some point with this blog. I want to clear out unnecessary posts/reblogs, and have a better tagging system (the more projects I have, the worse it becomes...).
!~
And finally, I think I'm gonna need a few weeks of a proper break. IRL has been weird and I'm mentally exhausted. I don't know whether I need a break from everything or just the internet... but I might be away for a bit for sure. doomscrolling has not been helping either...

Reactivating feels like unburying a time capsule
Yoga & I’ll do the day thing
The best thing about leaving home is remembering how much you love your home
Titanium rainbow quartz and black tourmaline type of day
Something about adulting brings out my inner child idk. Capricorn 4H coded?
Oops
Window seat. Vibe.
Cloudy day but the daylight keeps my eyes open
Not religious, just very spiritual. There’s a few things I do religiously tho
Just out here living fr. Life is hard, take it easy.
Voice. Yes. That felt good.
The less possessive and more fluid I become the more love I have to give.
I ain’t gon act like the fallen soldiers don’t get to me sometimes. Happy Vets Day.
It’s 11:55am and I’m considering a late night. Why am I like this? Idk. Idc.
It’s like this, you wouldn’t be able to see it if it didn’t already exist inside of you or in your world
Integrate the projections, honor the shadow
Gorgeous. Heart eyes. Double tap.
It’s coming & I can feel it. Like a pulse.
Being outside feels kinda good today.
No hands on a Monday
Oh that’s right, my progressed Mercury is direct now.
Awesome. Spectacular. So much fun.
Subdued, submissive, soft. Like begets like.
If it’s a lust thing let it be a lust thing. If it’s a love thing let it be a love thing. Life is complicated enough.
And well if it’s both then..
A late night it is.
Love. Love. LOVE.

Ok I'm going to start this by saying if you struggle with an ED or find calories triggering ignore everything I'm about to say this is just what helps me from not over or under eating when i get ready into a book or project. Also if you're not ready a fan of math this might not work well.
Ok so I was tired of not knowing weather I was eating enough or accidentally eating too much and feeling sick and decided to go down a rabbit hole of research. I figured out based on my age, weight, hight, activity level, and sex how many calories I needed everyday to function (it's more of an estimate most websites doing the math for you will give different estimates normally 100-200cal differents so it not necessary to strictly stick to whatever number you get)
I have a journal on the counter next to my fridge were I write everything down what time it is what I'm eating and how many calories it is (I also keep track of when I refill my water bottle and when I take my meds in the journal) because I will forget when the last time I ate was and if it was enough, I need about 1500cal per day (I aim to be anywhere between 1450-1600) and it hard to remember so eat when I'm in the middle of a good book or distracted with a project so anytime I'm forced to get up to use to bathroom I check my food journal see when was the last time I ate was it enough and should I get a snack or have a meal right now (if its been more then 4h the answer is eat something). It takes the guesswork out of it for me. I have probablems remembering to take care of myself and this method helps me not stress about eating to little and then binging to over compensate by turning it more onto an equation I can solve if I ate x at y how much more should I eat now to have about 600 leftover for dinner at 7? It's relaxing to me and so far has gotten me more used to eating more normal amounts throughout the day and drinking more water.
This absolutely will not work for everyone everybody is different and needs different things, if you want to do this you need to find out about how much you eat normally keep track of everything for about a week then figure out how much you need and if you need to increase your intake or not. also calories counting as a way to lose weight should be done extremely carefully and taken with a grain of salt because it is easy to fuck up your metabolism if you cut to much to fast or eat to little. Regardless never go below 1200cal per day for prolonged periods of time and never try and intentionally cut 400cal or more at once from your daily intake you will be miserable it is not worth it.
For years I would look at posts and questionnaires about neurodivergence that takes about being so focused on something that you forgot to eat and be like, "Couldn't be me. Being hungry is so uncomfortable! Your stomach is growling and cramping? How do you ignore that?"
Then someone informed me that neurotypical people have a whole bunch of "hungry" sensations before they get to that point.....

Do you know friends, where our telephone mobile takes us to travel?
Even though I am in Mars, I have sent every data update to my Sneha.
It felt as if I was doing auspicious things just by being near my Sneha.
You are probably thinking that there is no satellite, no media, still how was I able to contact my Sneha.
Friends, I did not travel to Mars just like that.
Do you know, friends, in China, mobile science has been made a profession in every household.
What is the science of making a phone and bringing it into contact
The science behind it. , ,
How do landline telephones work?
When you talk on a landline phone, your voice travels in short sound waves. sound waves travel
A thin metal disc, called a diaphragm, inside the phone converts electrical energy into energy.
Electrical energy travels through wires to another phone and is converted from electrical energy to sound waves
Which anyone on the other end of the phone can hear!
How do cell phones work?
A cell phone does not use wires to transfer your voice. A microphone turns on when you talk on a cell phone
Your voice into electrical signals. Controls (or changes) the radio wave using a microchip in the phone
electrical signal. The radio wave travels through the air to a nearby cell tower; the tower sends your voice
The person you are calling and the process is reversed so that the person on the other end can hear your voice.
How does a string telephone work?
A string telephone works exactly like a landline phone. When you talk into the cup your voice sends sound
Waves inside the cup, vibrations at the bottom of the cup. The vibrations are transferred to the string
String and insert into the bottom of the second cup. The sound waves become vibrations inside the second cup,
Transferring the sound of your voice.

DO NOT COPY, PLAGIARIZE OR TRANSLATE MY CONTENT. I HAVE ALREADY SHARED THIS POST ON MY SOCIALS SO IF YOU STEAL I'LL EXPOSE YOU.
🦜10h / 8h saturn may fear authority. But 10h saturn may be too too disciplined that they end up being authority figures themselves at some point
🦜8h /12h/ 6h moons can be subject to psychosomatic symptoms
🦜Mercury conjunct pluto natives may be able to focus on one topic for a long time like 👁️👄👁️
🦜3h jupiter could talk a lot/go to many schools as a kid/get lucky in school
🦜2h uranus, unpredictable spending habits/ getting money out of nowhere
🦜4h saturn, home could feel restricting
🦜8h mars/pluto's anger tho 😬 scary
🦜Moon conj/sextile/trine uranus can intuitively know how to handle technology, they can learn to code for example very quickly
🦜Synastry : moon conjunct/sextile/trine mercury : thinking about how the other makes u feel a lot or voicing it
🦜 Too much fire in a chart can make initiative hard instead of making it easy : they have too much drive but without some earth in the chart or saturn aspects, they could struggle to find an outlet to their passion and enthusiasm, having it scattered everywhere
🦜8h moons' mothers may have had a very very tough life, hence why they could seem controlling. They have seen and experienced things they dont want their kid to go through
🦜Moon - pluto feel the need to "evacuate" their feelings through physical activity, transmuting all those intense feelings
🦜4h taurus/libra/venus have an eye for decor
🦜3h mars could grow up competing w their sibling over something like their parents attention. Maybe their sibling views them as a competition which could lead to fights and tension
🦜Where u have 29° is what you re famous for doing well, what you want to be recognized for and what you get usually praised for. For example i have 29° virgo mars and im known for how efficient and meticulous i work and for how i move. Even people who have never talked to me personally know me for one of these two things. Alexa demi has a 29° venus and is known fof her style and beauty.
🦜 I noticed that some actors get casted for roles that represent their charts archetype, either developed or undeveloped and they get very famous doing it because they play it so naturally
Example : zendaya (virgo) being casted for Rue in euphoria, escapism tendencies (pisces sister sign) and panic attacks/anxiety. She literally looks like so many virgo suns I know
++ Being casted for the role of a stalker in You and getting so famous for it, hes a scorpio stellium
🦜10h/6h the difference imo :
10h is who you are/seem to be to people at work who dont know you yet/ your superiors
6h is who you are/seem to be to colleages you interact with a lot/your equals
🦜Cap placement parents are all about teaching their kids lessons you could be talking about apples and they tell u that u never eat them and they contain pectin and health benefits
🦜Cap + aqua placements in a parent chart can be conflicted with how they wanna raise their kids "i gotta be stricter! Am i being too strict?"
🦜Virgo mars can have their bedroom turned upside down messy af yet they have a to-do note on their work laptop with files neatly organized by project (calling myself out)
🦜Moon quintile pluto : their powerful emotions can fuel their talent and be source of inspiration for their artistic work

🌸astrology observations 🌸
Capricorn moons - they have a mean streak and they don't take shit "easy." Are more cutthroat that Capricorn suns.
Saturn in Cancer 7th House - have had to learn harsh lessons at a very young age. Especially at their own homes, they feel a bit restricted but they still have that strong need to protect their loved ones, even if their loved ones don't treat them the best, be it emotionally, mentally or physically.
Leo in 8H - no matter how hard they try to dim their light for others to shine, they still usually stand out no matter what they do, even if they are being "lowkey" with things. Despite being very understanding and open-minded about other peoples belief, they will still stick to what they believe is right, to them.
Aries 4H - have a very fierce temper and don't usually get angry among the people they hold dear, but if you hurt them they'll most likely get back at you, but it's always when you least expect it.
Capricorn suns - they aren't as "organized" or "smart" as others make them out to be, they are surprisingly the most naïve signs I have ever met. Also they have bad tempers. They can get easily influenced by others quickly. They do give good advices.
Sagittarius suns - they are oddly similar to Scorpios in a way, they have strong opinions/beliefs and are very honest signs and they mean what they both say. However the difference is that a Scorpio will hold you end of that deal for life, but Sagittarius suns are more unbothered by it. But they are both extremes signs, they don't do half-assed shit.
Capricorn + Sagittarius - their compatibility with one another are the complete opposite, they have the same views on life but in terms of their characteristics as an individuals, they are more decisive about who they are. Capricorns are very much more concerned about what others are doing and how they'll do it (its not necessarily the need to feel control but it can to lead to those situations) But Sagittarius are more concerned about themselves in terms of what they want to do or fix about themselves. (And they usually mind their own fucking business as they should, *cough* unlike Capricorn's nosy ass)
Pisces suns - they are more musically inclined and they prefer to express themselves through writing a song or through just writing in general because they keep a lot of feelings inside, it's easier for them to express their feelings that way. Also has a strong inclination towards spiritually and following fashion like trends.
Aquarius suns - are able to charm the people around them and usually lead projects for work or in school, as well as development programs or rallies. They are also very good at explaining or sharing their own ideas and thoughts but has a harder time expressing their feelings.

hello can u do a astro ship reading with bts, txt, enhypen?
cancer sun
capricorn moon
virgo rising
gemini mercury
leo venus
cancer mars
aries Lilith
capricorn chiron
thank you 💞
hi babe!
sure thing, let's go!
for bts
yoongi
tbh, you fit very well with all of the member but yoongi it's one of those cases where you two are different enough for it to work, understanding easily how the other acts and thinks, with many of his placements on your 7h and 5h, so, in your eyes, he could be ideal! if he does have a cancer rising, as some say (I'm not sure it's confirmed sorry), then your sun and mars on his first house would make him project onto you and your moon on his 7h makes you connect with what he wants in a relationship.
jin
and another hyung-line member but, really, this is the opposite to yoongi, as you two are similar enough for the relationship to work, but you view the world with different eyes - but there are a lot of good placements that talk about learning from each other. his sun could fall on your 4h, so you would feel like home to him, and his moon falls on your 7h while his venus falls on your 5h, meaning you could see yourself forming a family with him.
for txt
yeonjun
he was an afterthought, but he has a lot of libra and virgo placements with some fire signs thrown in there; he's the drive and you're his emotions, creating passion between the two. also your venus are conjunct - the way of loving for you both is similar, understanding what both of you want, and there's really good aspects between your moon and his sun, just like between his moon and your mercury, therefore emotions could be easier for you to talk about!
beomgyu
he was my first thought because, um, though, a 7h sun synastry, but his venus trines your own under your 8h, and he has a scorpio moon that trines your sun and mars, so this could be a super intense and romance-filled relationship.
for enhypen
heesung
his sun (and mercury) is trine your mercury, so communication comes easy, with a moon and venus on your 1h that's trine your own moon, so understanding emotions also comes naturally. your moon would be conjunct his mars, creating a fire, and your venus is sextile his sun and mercury, which creates more of a harmony between the two. his moon sextile your sun is a cute aspect, but his mars is also opposite your sun and mars, which can cause problems at times.
niki
this time, is his mercury and moon that are trine your sun and mars - communication could be done through actions, not many words are needed to be understood. his sun is trine your venus, falling on your 4h, so he could feel like home to you, while his venus is also trine your moon!
hope you enjoyed this!

Fingerless gloves!
Tutorial by Sami Dolls Handgemacht
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=haw2-M03NMc
Learned with that how to make the pattern as well as the gloves themselves.
My first real sewing project that I mostly machine sew! I mean I have sewn a cushion and a shiny ditto plush, but that was like at least a year ago. So! My first real sewn clothing! Oh I thing it actually is the first time I machine sew fleece.
Tbh I wanted to wait until I could afford like some cotton fabric to make t-shirts with or more fleece for a hoodie or Onesie even. But then I said F it and made these fingerless gloves. I have a lot of fleece, just not enough to make big pieces of clothing. And tbh I don't really want fleece for a shirt lol.
But as gloves? These fingerless gloves are made out of soft fleece, are super snug and warm and I'll be happy to wear them in Winter not in this heat haha.
I decided to go with black and white fleece, since it would fit most with what color I usually wear, which is either black, dark colors or white lol.
Took roughly 3-4h from start to finish, so fairly fast and easy. Loved making these. Just brainstorming how yellow I want thenext ones to be lol.
Certainly gonna make more haha. Gotta have a yellow pair. Though after my knitted and crochet scarves, I'll probably make some knittef and crochet fingerless gloves as well and compare the with another.

I’m a 4H kid. But not just a static project 4H kid (photography, clothing, crafts, foods, horticulture, etc) I also had animals. And so as a 4H kid, in honor of my last fair I will take you on a journey of what it’s like to have 3 species of animal (pigs, goats and cattle), foods, horticulture, photography, foods, clothing and crafts in the county fair because it is an EXPERIENCE.
So for me it starts in September the year before. This is when we breed our pigs to give birth in January.
From here until December I’m not doing much. Taking pictures, doing record books, going to 4H meetings that’s about it. We have our achievement banquet in November. It’s nothing special. We also have 48 hours of 4H which I always “fail” to participate in and 4H Sunday which is exactly what it sounds like.
In December is when we typically get our cattle. Normally 2-3 cows. They’re born about the march before the fair.
The pigs give birth in January and again: not doing much in terms of other projects. Just taking photos and whatnot.
In February and March we have club days. This is where everyone in the district (about 25 clubs) comes together at some building (typically the high school however we do go to one Community college) in the 4 counties that make up our district and we do model meetings, project talks, judging contests, lots of things. They’re really boring and I hate it. The March one is with all the clubs in our region. Idk how many that is but it’s hosted in my school. You go to regionals if you get purple at your club days.
In March we plant our veggies in the transplanting trays or directly in the ground for some. This is when we try to think about what we want to sew/attempt to find buymanship (shopping) outfits.
Also in March we have our cattle weigh-in and tagging. This is so we can do rate of gain. Where we see how much they gain over the next few months and who has the most.
Once a month we have 4H meetings. They’re typically on the third Sunday for my club but all clubs are different.
In April we pick out our goats. The people we get them from are really nice and they have lots of goats. Baby goats are so adorable and I love them
This isn’t a requirement but for lots of cattle people, there are spring shows. These are where you can practice in the show ring before the fair. They’re sometimes quite fun and you can win good stuff with them.
May is the deadline for adding/dropping projects. May is also the goat/sheep weigh in and the pig/goat/sheep tagging. We don’t weigh in the pigs because of some disease a while ago(?) I guess but yeah.
By the end of May we try to have all the fabric for our sewing projects and get those started.
June is work on sewing and photography and crafts month. You may also figure out what you want to bake and test that.
June you have to do the YQCA or youth for the quality of animals training (idk where the C comes from.) it’s stupid and I hate it with a passion because i was supposed to be grandfathered in but I wasn’t and we have to do it every year to be eligible to actually show in the fair
The end of June is when you have forms due. These are the project entry forms so you know how many of what project you have to do and then you send them to the extension office. My county has a limit on photography because of space so each person can only have 4 color and 4 black and white photos but everything else is unlimited. I think
You have to do cost per wear forms for clothing. This is where you show how much you know about your clothing you’re modeling. These forms are boring and I hate them.
Throughout May, June and July we’re outside walking our animals once a week to prepare for the shows. Pigs are pretty simple, goats are also quite easy. Cattle are kind of difficult because they’re so big and I have no clue on sheep. I for one am not a fan of sheep
This year July 12th was prefair judging. This is where we judge our clothing (buymanship and constructed), sewing quality, photography and crafts. It was also the style review where we show off our outfits for the community. It’s kind of fun tbh but it’s a very full day.
The day after that and the day after that day. We have the rodeo. It sucks. I used to watch it through the fence where we park a camper after the goat show but now they moved it up a week so I can’t do that
The Friday before the fair is prefair cleanup. We go to the fairgrounds, get the arena set up, get the fair buildings clean, get the pens cleaned and more
You have a bit of reprise for a week or so. In this week we’re clipping livestock, preparing foods, walking livestock and just overall preparing as best we can.
Night before the fair! This is when we are picking out vegetables, final touches on livestock clipping, starting baking if at all possible and pick out your clothing for the shows. This night is when all the static projects get took to the fairgrounds the night before and where we learn the winners of photography and sewing quality and crafts.
Wednesday! Aka first day of the fair. This day we get all the livestock weighed in, pigs and goats at the fairgrounds, cattle at a large animal vet clinic. After this we have our livestock into their barns at the fairgrounds, make sure they’re settled and head back home to get washed up for our next event of the day.
Wednesday we also have foods judging and horticulture judging. It’s a lot for one day
In the afternoon we get a small SMALL break before the pig show which starts at like 6. In this break time we’re resting before going out and washing our pigs and clipping their hair and just generally making them look nice.
After the show (by like 8ish), we feed our other animals and maybe walk them in the arena but it’s not necessary. Then we go home and wash up because pigs smell.
Thursday! This morning is the horse show. For me in the mornings we get to the fairgrounds and feed our livestock and try to relax in the morning. By the afternoon we’re getting our goats ready for the goat show which is at 4. Then the sheep show is at 6.
You typically have one shift in the food stand at the fair. This year mine is on Thursday.
Wednesday-Saturday there are rides and whatnot every night like a classic fair is.
Friday! This is the rabbit and poultry judging in the morning. It’s also when my club typically will do our club tour.
But every day starts like the rest. Feed livestock, let them walk around a bit. The usual
The cattle show is special. The dairy judging is at 4 and if you go you get free ice cream. It’s pretty good ice cream. But the beef show is at 6 so we start getting ready at like maybe 2 or 3. We wash the cattle and blow them out and clip their hair a bit and they’re big animals so it takes a while.
I forgot to put it up there because idk what day it is but you do meat quality on one day (I want to say Thursday) where they use something (like a sonogram) to see the marbling and give the meat it’s rating idk what that means exactly but I do know that it’s cool
All week you’re also competing in the herdsmanship competition. What club can keep their livestock areas the most clean? Find out at the end of the week. It’s easier if you’re the only one in your club with that livestock.
Saturday! we have round Robin. This is where all the showmanship winners (how well you show your animal) get to compete with all the other showmanship winners and show every animal breed. It’s easy if you show multiple breeds. I think it’s kind of fun
Saturday is also the livestock judging contest. You think you know good livestock? Let’s see. We use your animals and you pick the best ones. Sometimes we have reasons! Fuck reasons they suck.
Saturday is the awards presentation. You got grand or reserve in this project! Let’s recognize you with a trophy you’ll never use. Wait we stopped doing trophy’s a while ago. How about a chair? Backpack! You can use this goat blanket!
Then it’s the project auction. You can sell foods, photography, a craft, anything! These things go directly to the buyer and they will pay good money for it. (Once a picture went super high because this girls grandpa kept bidding on it. I love Don but we don’t let him buy stuff at the auction anymore).
I don’t know what I’m doing for the project auction this year. I might sell my pig (tank) or if foods go well I’ll sell some bread at the auction. It would be weird for the person who’s going into food science NOT to sell food at the auction.
After the projects are done it’s time for the livestock. Every year it rotates between the cattle, sheep, goats and pigs being first. This is different than the project auction because these are community members saying: you did a great job with your livestock let me give you money. And they will. It’s nice
Saturday we also have a few other fun things. Like barnyard Olympics! Or the cornhole tournament!
This is the last night of the fair and at this point you’re tired as shit but now the truck comes. Don’t want your animals to come home with you? No problemo! Load them on the truck and they’re not your problem anymore
Sunday! There’s cowboy church and barn clean up and get your livestock out and there’s also pancakes at the food stand. You should be out of their by 1 or 2pm. Cowboy church is at 9 and honestly it’s kind of fun. There are horses and whatnot.
Before you leave the fair you must select the purple ribbon projects that you want to go to the state fair. I typically only take photography and horticulture. Sometimes foods. This year though it’s only photography.
You also get ribbon money along with the project auction money. Idk how much it is per ribbon. I forgot. However you can’t get this money until you send a thank you to your auction buyers. Sometimes with a gift too.
Now keep your state fair projects save until September when the state fair is and then the cycle starts again.
Bonus! You think you’re going to get sleep after the long nights and early mornings? Nope! Because for me after the fair I go to a church thing with my youth group for a week. We leave on Sunday where we do manual labor and honestly it’s fun.
Last year was even better though because on the Friday of the county fair my grandma died! Haha great fun. So we had the county fair, and then a funeral AND then prayer and action and honestly? Horrible experience 0/10. I hated all of it.

Wow omg thank you for your long answer!!! I feel a little called out to be honest haha
You are def right about the things you said👀 at least the ones I can confirm. Dont know about the 'leaving a memorable impression on others.' But I'd really like to think so hehe
What do you mean by 'interesting relationship with my mum'? I'd really love to know 👀
Anyways! The question you asked me about working in a group made me think... because I cant really give you a proper answer haha. It really depends on the situation. I feel like in school when we had to do group projects I kind of took the lead because I knew these lazy ass people and I mean someone has to do it right? Also I feel like I like having control over situations so I take the lead to know everything is going fine^^ BUT with people I dont know ... I wouldnt dare to just take the lead no no no. Too much of an introvert. BUT(again) I'd still speak my mind openly if I think this group project wasnt going well or if I had any problem with it. And actually same goes for the question if its easy for me to work in groups. It depends on the situation, if I know these people(then yes its quite easy for me) or not, if the task is stressing me out or not. But in general I really dont mind working in a group. But if the people are mean or I dont like them, screw them. Then I'd rather just do it on my own because thats less stress.
I hope that answer wasnt too long or too much rambling about myself haha... anyways thank you so much again for your long ass answer🥺 I really really appreciate it!!!
-👻
thank YOU for sending and responding !!
and i find that 4H gemini moons have a very interesting relationship with their mother/maternal figure (and siblings). both the 4H and the moon represent the mother and home life—gemini represents siblings. so when the moon is under the sign of gemini, i think the intellectual relationship between you and your family might be interesting—you probably understand each other easily, even when you don’t want to. but there still may be complications within your interactions with each other. one day the emotional bond is tight, the next it’s not.
4H gemini moon is one of my favorite placements bc i could genuinely talk about it all day lol 😌
and for the group work thing! yeah i find that air signs (particularly aquarius and gemini) don’t always like group work (libras can handle it). but when no one is rlly stepping up into that leader role, they assume it themselves. air signs contribute really good ideas to the larger group—but if everyone isn’t pulling their weight what’s the point in group work?

Fic UPDATE! Wide River to Cross: Homecoming
Author’s Note: So close. We're so close now, dear readers. Thanks for sticking with me this far; not much longer now. I promise. As you'll see from the events in this chapter, it will be impossible to prolong the agony. (Who remembers the actual agony while watching Season 7, wondering what had happened between Jack and Lisa? I remember that agony...) All that aside, the good part about how long this story has taken me is that plot lines that have occurred down the line can be worked in, and they can make some semblance of sense. I hope. Anyway, here's the latest chapter.
Chapter 22: Homecoming
In the darkness of night, the tree-lined drive seemed eerily foreign to Lisa as the town car bore both her and Rachel to their familial estate. Though it was a view she had seen thousands of times in her life, this particular return to Fairfield granted her no trace of comfort or sense of homecoming. It was bordering on close to ten months that she had been absent—one of the longest spells she had been away since her past marriage to Dan and subsequent move to the USA.
Lisa could not help but recall other lengthy absences from Fairfield, particularly in her adolescence when she had attended boarding school in France with Rachel. While she had enjoyed those times away—thanks to her love of French culture and many outings with her doting Aunt Evelyn—the inevitable homesickness was alleviated only upon return. Now, she felt like a stranger returning to a strange place, creeping in like some interloper.
Like a thief in the night, she thought to herself wryly, fighting the encroaching discomposure without much success.
“We’re here, Rach,” Lisa whispered, giving her younger sibling a gentle nudge.
“Huh? Oh, thanks,” Rachel mumbled sleepily. “I didn’t realise I nodded off.”
She smiled slightly, watching as Rachel rubbed bleary eyes before finishing off with a long yawn. Rachel had endured only one flight; Lisa had needed three to return to Alberta. Exhaustion was indeed beginning to overwhelm her, but there was a nervous tension buzzing through her veins, keeping her on an unusual level of alertness. Now that she was back in Hudson, the mere thought of being in the same town as Jack—and potentially encountering him anywhere—set her mind spinning. How would such a meeting play out? What words could pass her lips to express to him all that was in her heart? What words, if any, would he have to say to her?
Security lights illuminated the exteriors of the stables, dispelling the shadows. Night checks would have already been completed by this hour. All was quiet now, though Lisa knew Harry Wilkes would probably still be up in his office, burning the midnight oil while waiting for their arrival.
Good ol’ Harry, Lisa thought with affection. He had been such a constant presence in her life since she was a little girl, working his way up from the very bottom as a stable hand to head groomsman. Matthew Stillman had come to trust the man with just about everything, and Lisa had done the same. Harry was dedicated to the care of the horses in a way that went beyond what was expected of a mere hired hand. Anyone else would have retired from the position by now, but Harry was still logging the same hours as he had during the past forty-five years as a Fairfield employee. He had been there through the lean years and through the successful ones.
Without her realising it, a long pout pulled at Lisa’s face as the car pulled to a stop in front of the sprawling ranch house. She knew Harry was not thrilled with the idea of her selling Fairfield, even though he was guaranteed a handsome severance package. The rest of the staff might be keen on staying on with new owners; Harry would not—Lisa was certain of that.
“Why the long face?” Rachel asked, looking over at her. “Something wrong?”
“Hmm?” Lisa shook herself. “Oh, no. It’s just that... I-I don’t think Harry is pleased with my decision to sell, that’s all.”
“So Harry’s still working here, eh?” Rachel said, lips quirking into a lop-sided smile. “Dad really lucked out when he hired him. He’s been here since before I was even born. Good ol’ Harry.”
“I honestly don’t think I could have managed without him when Dad got sick,” Lisa mused out loud.
Sure enough, the door to the Fairfield business offices opened to reveal the man in question, silhouetted against the interior lights. He waved jauntily at them, and Lisa intuited he was intent on helping them unload their luggage.
“C’mon,” she said to Rachel as she opened her door. “Let’s get out before he gets the idea we’re going to let him carry everything into the house. He’s been up all night waiting; he’s got to be tired after working all day.”
“Right,” Rachel said in agreement, though she was staving off another yawn of exhaustion.
“Ah, the two prettiest girls in Hudson have made their triumphant return,” Harry greeted them affectionately; paternally.
“Oh, Harry,” Lisa said with a chagrined laugh, “I don’t know about ‘triumphant’, and after travelling all day, we look like something the cat dragged in.”
“Ha! Speak for yourself, sis,” Rachel interjected merrily. “Harry, flattery gets you everywhere. It’s good to see you.”
“Likewise, Rachel.”
The three gathered for a warm group hug. As Lisa guessed moments earlier, the next words out of Harry’s mouth were an offer to bring their luggage inside.
“No, no, you take it easy Harry,” Lisa quickly stated. “You’ve had a long day, too. Rachel and I can manage just fine.”
“Nonsense,” Harry said, reaching for the largest of the pieces the chauffeur had just deposited from the trunk. “Your father would be horrified if he saw me standing by idly while you two dragged all this stuff by yourselves.”
“Chivalry isn’t dead in Hudson, I see,” Rachel quipped, following the older man with her carry-on and a smaller suitcase.
“Thanks, Harry,” Lisa said after everything was sitting in the spacious foyer.
“Happy to do it, Lisa,” Harry said. “Welcome home.”
“Yeah... for however long that’s going to be,” Lisa sighed.
“It’s going to be hard seeing this place go,” Harry uttered with a wistful air. “Fairfield has been a big part of Hudson ever since you made it the success it’s become, Lisa. This town won’t be the same without it—or you.”
Not unkindly, Lisa asked: “Is this your way of trying to talk me out of selling?”
Harry shrugged. “Maybe. I know an old fella like me who’s on his way to retirement can’t interfere with the business decisions of his boss, but you know this place has always been more than just a ’job’ for me.”
“I know,” Lisa said warmly, reaching out to touch his arm in a show of understanding. “And I thank you for everything you’ve done from the day my father hired you to this present time.”
“You’re welcome,” he said, placing a hand over hers for a few moments. “I should be on my way. See you in the morning.”
“Of course.”
Harry turned to make his exit, but hesitated on the threshold. “There is something...”
Lisa waited expectantly. “What is it?” she asked when he did not continue.
“Hmmph. Nah, it can wait ‘til tomorrow,” he muttered. “Goodnight, ladies.”
“’Bye,” Rachel said, trying to suppress another yawn.
“Goodnight, Harry,” Lisa said, closing the door behind him, slightly perturbed by the man’s cryptic parting words. Whatever it was, she would learn of it the next day.
--
As cranky as Jack was at the notion of having the woolly creatures on his land, Georgie’s 4H Club project meant sheep at Heartland was good for something. At least the kid could learn about the rearing of an animal she could handle. Lambs weren’t liable to trample you, gore you, buck you off, or kick you in the head. It was decidedly not fun chasing down the specific lamb Georgie and Olivia wanted, especially since they could not agree on which one was the best one for their needs. Jack half-suspected they were changing their fickle minds on purpose, just for the spectacle of his sprawling about in the grass and weeds, grabbing at this lamb or that lamb.
It should have been Tim’s job seeing after the sheep, but he picked that very week to head to Moose Jaw to visit with his son, Shane, so they could spend Thanksgiving together. Why was it his ex-son-in-law continued to be such an irritant and an imposition in his life? If not for Lou and Amy, the man would never again have darkened the door at Heartland.
After Georgie and Olivia finally settled on a lamb and Jack successfully secured it, he decided a little break was necessary. It was no use getting worked up over the flock again; also, the girls did not need his grumpy mood to ruin things for them. It was trial enough for Georgie to be partnered with Olivia, he knew, so he did his best to keep his cool while in their company.
Once inside the kitchen, he brewed a cup of tea and eased into a chair in the living room—the kitchen having been taken over by Peter and his laptop. The man really needed office space of some kind while he was here, Jack mused.
Why Tim felt the need to saddle his son-in-law with the nickname “The General” was beyond Jack, but then again, Tim knew exactly how to push other people’s buttons. The recent fiasco involving Tricia and her near-delinquent daughter, Jade, at the fishing cabin was a fine example of that.
Jack sipped at his tea, trying to resolve in his mind yet again why Tim possessed such an unbridled sense of entitlement. He lacked what Jack’s grandmother would have called social graces. His unsolicited comments could be tactless. The frustrating thing was that such comments were often uncomfortable truths no one else wanted to face or accept.
When Tim had first asked how the Arizona trip had been, Jack recalled initially telling him to mind his own business. Tim, ignoring Jack’s desire for privacy had asked, point-blank:
“You missed Lisa, didn’t you?”
”Didn’t I tell you to mind your own business?!” Jack had retorted. “I had a swell time.”
”You’re not fooling me, old man. What did you do with yourself down there the whole time? You couldn’t have been having that much of a ‘swell time’ because you cut it short and came home a week early!”
“I did happen to have some good times, thank you very much!”
“Yeah? Doing what?” Tim had challenged.
“Saddleback trip. Lookin’ at real estate. Meeting nice people. Camping and fishing.”
“Meeting nice people and fishing, eh? Catch anything good down there in Arizona?” Tim asked suggestively.
“As a matter of fact, yes. I hooked a very nice catfish.”
“Oooh! A catfish!” Tim had crooned, pretending to be impressed. “How big was it?”
Knowing he would not be able to lie any further, Jack had groaned in annoyance and decided it was time to cease this line of questioning. “Dunno,” he had sullenly replied. “It pulled free from the hook before I could reel it in. The sun was going down by then. I quit trying after that.”
“Ha!” Tim had laughed triumphantly. “Dinner out of a can that night, right?”
Jack grit his teeth. “No, I forgot to bring a can opener. Are you done, now?”
“You ‘forgot’ to bring a can opener?” Tim crowed in derision. “So why didn’t you just use your knife to open the can, or did you forget to bring a knife, too?”
“Oh, would you just shut up already!”
Jack stalked off and was thus out of earshot when a gleeful, self-righteous Tim muttered, “Ohhh, he totally missed Lisa.”
--
It was already after 10:00 a.m. when Lisa awoke on Saturday morning. The inevitable jet-lag felt especially pronounced this time around, and she groaned when she realised the lateness of the hour. She so wanted to soak up a few more hours of sleep, but knew work was waiting. There was the matter Harry mentioned the night before which she wanted to get to the bottom of, but the first order of business absolutely had to be contacting the real estate agent.
After a quick shower, she shared a hurried breakfast with Rachel. Her sister was still drowsy and not much in the mood to talk while they ate. When Rachel drifted back to bed for a nap, Lisa finally got on the phone to the realtor, glad they were indeed open that day despite it being a holiday long weekend. After all those months in France of dithering on this, it felt almost anti-climactic the sale would finally be happening. The deed is done, Lisa thought after hanging up. She was not sure what emotions she was experiencing now that Fairfield would officially be on the market.
Ruefully, she thought, I really should call Dan and tell him the ‘good’ news. In all truth, her ex-husband was the last person she wanted to speak to after all their less-than-pleasant email correspondences over the past several months. I wonder what Jack would think if I called him and told him I was back in Hudson? Lisa stopped herself cold. Where did that thought come from?! I would have to explain to him that I’m finally selling the old place and moving to France for good, wouldn’t I? I’d have to come up with some excuse as to why I didn’t even tell him I was coming back.
She stood from behind her desk and decided it was time to check in on Harry, brushing aside any further thoughts of both of her exes.
“Ah, Lisa! Good morning,” Harry greeted Lisa brightly when she knocked on the business office door.
“Good morning, Harry. I just got off the phone with the real estate people. Someone’s going to be by later this week to properly assess the property and get some signs posted and such.”
“Of course,” he said with a nod of understanding.
“Harry, about that thing you mentioned last night...”
“Oh, yes. That,” Harry said, lowering his voice.
Lisa caught his tone, and interpreted he was about to tell her something she would not particularly enjoy hearing. “Well, what is it?”
“It’s Dan,” Harry said in a manner that spoke volumes of disapproval.
“Dan? What’s he done now?” Lisa asked guardedly.
“You’d better follow me,” Harry said, rising from his seat.
He led Lisa out to the stables where they stopped in front of Fairfield Flyer’s stall. The champion racer seemed strong and healthy, and Lisa looked at her head groomsman, awaiting an explanation.
“Dan and some of his people and vets have been here to see Flyer and Rhapsody quite a few times while you were gone,” Harry started. “Since you have joint ownership, of course I couldn’t stop him.”
“Stop him from doing what?” Lisa asked, instantly on edge. Rhapsody was one of her broodmares.
“From getting all kinds of lab work done—and cell samples taken from Flyer.”
“Cell samples...” Lisa mused out loud.
Harry continued. “Rhapsody is already nine months pregnant. You had no idea, did you?” he asked warily as he studied her reaction. “Don’t answer that. Your expression tells me all I need to know.”
Lisa felt her cheeks flush. “I always did have a lousy poker face,” she grumbled.
“Ah, I should have known he didn’t tell you, but you know I’m not the type to interfere,” a contrite Harry said. “And given the nature of what he was doing, I wasn’t sure if you were both keeping it a secret, or what. Sorry, Lisa.”
“Don’t apologize; this isn’t remotely your fault. It seems I have a call to make to my ‘business partner’. Thanks, Harry.”
She strode out of the stables, absolutely steaming, trying to decide how best to have this conversation with Dan. Cell samples? That could only mean one thing, Lisa concluded, coupled with Dan’s recent talk about getting into horse cloning. He was trying to warm me up to the idea, she now realised.
“Where do you get off cloning Fairfield Flyer without even consulting with me first?!” Lisa exploded when she had Dan on the line.
“Now hold on just a minute, Lisa—” Dan tried to interrupt.
“No, you hold on; I’m not finished,” Lisa hissed through clenched teeth. “Harry told me you’ve been out to Fairfield to see Flyer and Rhapsody. This is the real reason you’ve been so demanding about the finances, isn’t it? You weren’t concerned about the Avignon facility—you were paying to have Flyer cloned. How many other horses did you have lined up for the procedure?”
From Dan’s silence, Lisa knew she had hit the nail on the head.
“When were you going to tell me?” Lisa fumed. “When were you going to tell me the Avignon deal was all a sham and that you were really using my investment funds to clone Flyer and God knows how many others?”
“Okay, simmer down,” Dan said, trying to placate her. “Avignon is still a go. But the focus has shifted slightly. It could be the best equine cloning facility in Europe, Lisa. If the clone of Flyer is a success, we’re going to take it to Avignon as the poster boy for the procedure in race horses. We’d be one of the first out of the gate doing this. We could make history, Lisa, because the Racing Association is bound to come around once more people get on board.”
“Have you lost your mind?” Lisa had to keep herself from shouting. “You go behind my back, and-and then try to tell me you’re shifting the focus of the breeding facility we planned in France?”
“All that stuff you learned in that Lexington conference about performance markers is great, Lisa,” Dan said, “but that’s yesterday’s science. Cloning is the future. Do you really want to be left behind?”
Lisa realised she was still too angry to have a rational talk with Dan. “Let’s table that question,” she finally said. “I just got into Hudson late last night, and I’m too tired to deal with this right now. But make no mistake, Dan, I’m not impressed you went behind my back.”
“Fair enough, fair enough,” Dan said, sounding almost relieved. “Hang on, did you just say you’re back in Hudson?”
Lisa clenched her teeth in irritation. “How else do you think I found out about Flyer?”
“Uhhh—Harry told you, didn’t he?”
“Of course Harry told me,” snapped Lisa, relishing the discomfort she heard in Dan’s voice. He sounded as if he were a guilty schoolboy.
“I see,” Dan said in resignation. “Wait, if you’re in Hudson, does that mean you’ve finally put Fairfield on the market?”
“Yes, Dan, you’ll be happy to know I took care of that chore before calling you,” Lisa replied testily.
“Good! That’s great!” Dan exclaimed. “Finally. Look, Lisa, I get you’re upset about the cloning thing. You’re right; I should have included you in that decision. But Flyer is mine, too. I think in time, you’ll see—”
“Ah, but Rhapsody is mine,” Lisa cut in. “You’re still on shaky ground, Dan. As I said just now, we’ll discuss this later. You’ll be lucky if I don’t decide to involve my lawyer with this one.”
She heard his exhalation of discontent, but she frankly did not care. Misappropriation of funds, she thought. Yeah, that has a nice ring to it.
“Come on, Lisa. Are you really going to split hairs like that?” he whined. “Aren’t we business partners in this whole breeding venture?”
It took all the control she could muster not to slam down the phone. Instead, she took a steadying breath before responding. “That didn’t give you the right to use Rhapsody for your cloning experiment without consulting with me first. But what’s done is done. Like I said, I’m not in the mood to discuss this right now. Goodbye.”
Lisa did not wait to hear Dan respond before she hung up the call.
Rachel, having awakened from her nap, was sitting at the breakfast nook in the kitchen, flipping through an old edition of the Hudson Times. When Lisa wandered in, Rachel glanced up and said, “Uh-oh. I know that look. Something’s got you mad.”
Lisa groaned. “Ugh. What tipped you off?”
Rachel smirked. “Yeah, see, there’s this vein that always pops out on your forehead whenever you blow a gasket,” she answered, motioning to her own head.
Grumbling, Lisa swiped a self-conscious hand over her face.
“Hey, it’s not like you get mad often, sis,” Rachel said, trying to lighten the mood. “It must be something big.”
Lisa plopped down wearily across from Rachel. “It’s Dan,” she began. “He’s gone and tried to clone one of my best racers—Fairfield Flyer—without even asking me, first.”
“Oh, wow. Is that even legal?” Rachel asked, folding the paper and putting it aside. “I’m not up on my horse cloning ethics.”
“It is legal,” Lisa said, “but it’s damned expensive, comes with a pile of risk factors, and the Racing Association has yet to accept clones in sanctioned races.”
“Didn’t I read something a couple years ago about clones being accepted for show jumping in the Olympics?” asked Rachel.
Lisa nodded. “Yes. The Fédération Equestre Internationale did announce clones could be entered for equestrian events. I still don’t know what Dan was thinking, though. Flyer is a racer, not a jumper, or dressage. It’s infuriating. And it’s not even about the ethics when it comes to cloning; it’s that Dan was hounding me for months to get Fairfield sold so we could get going on an operation out of Avignon.”
“Avignon?” repeated Rachel.
“Yes. You know I always wanted to retire to France, eventually.”
“Right...”
“Anyway,” Lisa continued, “I sold my share of the Dude Ranch back to Lou, and assumed those funds were going towards funding that Avignon operation. Obviously, Dan was funnelling all of it to help make the payments for the cloning procedure.” She let out another huff of frustration; Rachel eyed her with pity.
“C’mon, Lisa,” Rachel said after several moments of silence. “In the end, a horse is a horse, and we both know you love horses. When Rhapsody foals, you’re going to love that clone. So forget Dan, and focus on making sure Rhapsody stays healthy through the rest of the pregnancy.”
The words were like a thunderbolt, bringing a much-needed dose of reality. Lisa stared at Rachel for a few moments, speechless. “Are you sure you’re the younger sister, here?” she eventually asked with an affectionate smile and shake of her head. “When did you get to be so wise?”
“Oh, I have my moments,” Rachel answered airily.
“Well, I hope there’s more wisdom where that came from,” Lisa said, “because even though you’re right about loving it when it arrives, I get the feeling that clone is going to become more like a monkey on my back.”
--
Thanksgiving at Heartland was slightly less crowded than usual owing to the absences of Tim and Lou. Everyone was thankful for Jack’s surviving the heart attack and for Amy’s health and recovery after her recent scare with Zeus; Georgie was thankful in particular for her new family and for Phoenix.
At Fairfield, the celebration was slightly more subdued. Figuring this to be their final Thanksgiving together before the family farm passed into new hands, the Stillman sisters spent much of that holiday Monday* reminiscing about older, happier times, and some not-so-happy times, too.
“I used to love it when Aunt Evelyn would come to visit from wherever she had last been,” Lisa remarked as they sat together in the cozy living room, a roaring fire burning in the hearth.
“Remember her second husband?” Rachel snickered.
“Ah, yes. Uncle Merrill,” Lisa said. “With those massive sideburns we always wished he would shave off.”
“Where did she meet him, again?”
“Wales, I think,” Lisa replied. “But he was from Scotland.”
“He claimed he was some Scottish lord, right?” asked Rachel. “I seem to remember that.”
Lisa nodded seriously. “He apparently had the bank account to prove it, or so Aunt Evelyn told me.”
“Well, she was married to him the longest,” Rachel said.
“That’s true,” Lisa said, taking a sip of cider.
“Until he left her for a newer, younger model,” Rachel said.
“And she took him to the cleaners,” chortled Lisa. “Then promptly found herself another millionaire boyfriend.”
“That one didn’t last very long, did it?”
“Oh, a couple years, maybe? Then she had a few other gentlemen friends whose names I forget. Then she married Charles, the wealthy stockbroker from New York. They met on a cruise ship. Divorced him after five years.”
“Aunt Evelyn is addicted to men and to money,” Rachel said. “And I mean that in the nicest possible way.”
“Rachel, there is no nice way to call someone a gold digger,” Lisa said, a peal of laughter breaking forth.
“Ha! You said it; not me!”
“All right, Aunt Evelyn may have her... flaws... but she’s always been good to us,” Lisa said sincerely.
“Yeah... you’re right,” Rachel said. “Though you’re her favourite, you know.”
Lisa cocked her head and frowned at her sister, puzzled by this comment. “Naw. She totally spoiled us both. What d’you mean by that?”
“Oh, nothing.” Rachel waved a hand dismissively. “I just got the feeling like she doted on you a little more. That’s all.”
“What? Why?”
Rachel stared at her older sister, considering for a few moments how to proceed. She blew out a breath and said, “Okay, remember that horse you had when we were kids? Silver?”
“Yes,” Lisa said, thinking of the dapple grey mare she got as a rescue. She put aside her mug, sensing Rachel was about to say something she had been wanting to say for a long time, but never had the chance to get it off her chest.
“I remember when Silver got sick a few years later,” Rachel said. “Dad didn’t think he could afford to pay for the surgery.”
“That’s right,” Lisa confirmed. “It was colic. Silver was getting old by that point, so Dad didn’t think the risk was worth it.”
“You know, I didn’t even have my own horse at the time, and Aunt Evelyn swooped in and said she’d pay for the surgery,” Rachel said, voice tainted with the slightest stain of bitterness. “You were seven when you got Silver. I remember, because I thought somehow that’s what I would get when I turned seven, too. Funny, isn’t it? We lived on a horse-breeding farm, and I didn’t get my own horse until I was ten.”
“Rachel, it’s a stupid question... did you even really want your own horse?” Lisa asked carefully.
Rachel rolled her eyes. “Of course I wanted my own horse,” she said. “What little girl living in Hudson didn’t ‘want’ her own horse?”
“I know, but ‘wanting’ a horse isn’t the same as loving that horse when you finally get it, is it?”
Lisa thought back to when Rachel did receive her own horse the Christmas after she turned ten, a gift from Evelyn. In the beginning, the girl had been ecstatic, but the excitement had waned, and the horse was sometimes neglected.
“No, it isn’t the same thing,” admitted Rachel. “Look, I don’t mean to sound petty. At the time, I was jealous; I admit it. When I was younger, I thought Aunt Evelyn paying for Silver’s surgery when I didn’t even have my own horse meant she loved you more and was ignoring me.”
“I’m sorry, Rach,” Lisa said sincerely. “I had no idea you felt that way.”
“Like I said, I felt that way when I was younger. I thought having a horse would make me happy the way it seemed to make you happy; like it made other girls around town happy,” Rachel said. “It wasn’t until later I realised I wasn’t actually a horse-crazy girl like everyone else.”
“No, you were more boy-crazy,” Lisa said, a small smile twitching her lips.
“Ohhh, was I ever,” Rachel said, throwing back her head and casting her eyes to the ceiling.
“Do you ever regret leaving home when you did?” Lisa queried. “I mean, do you ever wish you had waited until you were a little more settled? Aunt Evelyn was willing to pay for your post-secondary education anywhere in the world like she did for me, you know.”
“Yeah, I know. And I keep saying that the timing was probably wrong,” Rachel said. “But I always come back to Ben. He’s the reason I don’t have regrets about that. I love my son more than my own life, Lisa. If I do regret anything is that his childhood probably wasn’t as happy as it could have been because of my stupid relationship mistakes.”
“Well, from what I can see, he’s grown into a fine young man, Rachel,” Lisa said, thinking of the rough patch Ben went through during Rachel’s train wreck of a divorce. “He’s learned some valuable life lessons and he’s working hard now to achieve his goals.”
“I admit I’m proud of him,” Rachel said with a smile. “I’m sorry again for dumping him on you—”
“Oh, stop!” Lisa put up a hand. “We’ve been over this a hundred times. Even though I could have done a better job when he was here, it made me realise raising a child isn’t a cakewalk.”
“No, but it is worth it,” Rachel said. “I look at Ben, and I think at least I did something right in the world.”
“Yeah...” Lisa said softly.
“He did appreciate his time here, Lisa,” Rachel said, getting an inkling of where Lisa’s thoughts might have carried her at that moment.
“I hope so,” Lisa uttered. “Though somehow, I think I acted a little more like Aunt Evelyn: dropping expensive gifts instead of making any meaningful impact on his life that would actually matter.”
“I don’t see it that way at all,” Rachel countered. “You give from the heart, Lisa. You’ve always been the generous type. And with Fairfield’s success came bigger ways to show that generosity. To be honest, I was a bit jealous of your giving nature, too.”
“And if I’m going to be honest, I was a bit jealous of you,” Lisa said seriously.
“Of me?” Rachel said, clearly shocked. “Whatever for?”
“You left home. Had a child. You... didn’t have the weight of responsibility for Fairfield that I had,” Lisa admitted. “I have loved building up the business into the success it is today, but I also thought kids would naturally come along when I was married to Dan. When that didn’t happen, I thought about you and how easy it seemed for you.”
“It wasn’t easy at all, especially when Gary walked out on us,” stated Rachel emphatically. “And I thought I’d have more kids too, when the ex-who-shall-not-be-named came into the picture and seemed like he’d be a great step-father to Ben. We all know how that turned out.”
Lisa bobbed her head slowly, knowing no further words were needed on the subject of the breakup of Rachel’s marriage.
At length, Rachel murmured: “I’m glad I came out here one last time. There was a time I couldn’t wait to leave; relieved you were the older daughter that Dad would look to for running the business. I don’t think I’ve ever truly appreciated how much of a burden you’ve shouldered.”
“We’ve both had our burdens and hardships,” Lisa said, looking at the glowing embers in the fireplace.
“I mean it, Lisa,” Rachel insisted. “Thank you for being there for Dad, and for running Fairfield all these years. It’s just a shame he didn’t live long enough to see the success it’s become.”
“A success that’s now coming to a close,” Lisa said quietly. “When I pick up stakes and move to Avignon, it’s going to be a whole new business.”
“Nothing wrong with that,” Rachel commented. “You haven’t heard from Jack. You said it yourself that it’s time to make a fresh start.”
“I know,” Lisa said. “And you’re right. But being here in Hudson, well, it’s brought back a lot of memories with him. Good memories. It hurts to finally realise that there won’t be any more of those.”
“Well, who knows? Maybe you’ll meet a fine French gentleman in Avignon,” Rachel said with a mirthful chuckle.
“Oh, no! The last thing I need is to turn into Aunt Evelyn,” Lisa scoffed, chagrined at her sister’s comment. Her thoughts suddenly took her to Toulon and the foul experience she had with Alphonse. It struck her his marriage to the young Audrey had come and gone that spring, and their baby was probably due any time. I sure dodged a bullet with that one, she decided, even if my “friends” thought we would make a good match.
“You could never be like Aunt Evelyn,” Rachel said. “You’re not a gold-digger, and the money you’ve made came through hard work. And the money doesn’t really matter to you, either, does it?”
“I won’t lie,” Lisa replied. “The money matters, because I got to do things and go places I always dreamed of doing and seeing when I was a kid. But what’s money if you don’t have people you love to share it with?”
Rachel looked at her sister with sympathy. “You really did love him, didn’t you?”
Lisa returned Rachel’s glance. “With every fiber of my being. My whole world stopped when Lou told me about his heart attack. Nothing mattered after nearly losing him like that. I just wish I had the chance to tell him so.”
“Look, it’s not my place to tell you what to do or what not to do, Lis,” Rachel said. “But you’re here in Hudson now, and he’s here. This could be your last chance to tell him.”
A slight shiver ran down Lisa’s spine at the notion of facing Jack and baring her heart as she had tried so many months ago, when she made the horrible mistake of renting the hospital bed for him. “I already squandered that ‘last chance’, Rach,” Lisa said sadly. “It’ll take a miracle to convince Jack to see me again. I blew it, and now I’m paying the price.”
--
Thanksgiving dishes were washed and put away; night checks on the horses were finished; everyone was tucked away in bed. Jack, however, lingered by himself in the living room before the fire, sipping on a hot toddy. There was indeed much to be thankful for, he knew, particularly when it came to his own life. There’s much to regret, too, he thought, watching as the flames licked at the seasoned logs. While life moved on, his heart still pined for her. He was still stuck in a place of uncertainty and inaction; of wanting to reach out and of pulling back again. It’s been ten months. Lisa has moved on, surely. It would be wrong of me to call her now, after all that’s gone on between us, and mess up whatever it is she has going. I should be thankful we had whatever it is we had and let her go. With that, Jack pulled himself up from the couch, doused the fire, and crept into his bedroom. As he closed his eyes, his last thought before falling asleep was that given his angry parting words with Lisa, spoken in the heat of the moment, he was undeserving of a second chance with her. Nothing will ever bring us back together; that’s a bridge too far.
