Easter Eggs/references from Kiss Kiss Fall in Portal

I wanted one place where all of this was together so I'm putting it together. I was hooked when I saw that the episode title itself was a reference to Ouran Highschool Host Club. I primarily enjoy DC content through their animated works, please let me know if I'm missing something from the comics, live action, or something else.

First we get Superman from Earth-F aka Superman from the Fleischer Superman Theatrical Shorts(1941–1943) (Mxy calls it Earth 12, this seems to be a typo in the script as Earth 12 is the MAwS earth and mentions that earth just before in the list, or there are multiple Earth 12s.)

Then we get Superman from Earth 50 aka Superman from Super Friends (1973-1985)

Then we get Superman from Earth 508 aka Superman from Superman: The Animated Series (1996-2000)/ Justice League (2001-2004) / Justice League Unlimited (2004-2006)

Then the final Superman from this scene Superman from Weird Earth. I think this is first instance of this kind of variation with superman as doing a quick search links the DC character 'The Weird' But I also love when multiverse productions just do weird and silly versions of things (looking at you hot dog hands Everything Everywhere All at Once)

Our next batch of References is to and to the League of Lois Lanes, founded by Lois Prime, the first Lois to discover (and based on how she is talked about communicate and or travel to other universes). Our introduction to them has he League of Loises asking Lois lane and Jimmy Olsen of Earth 12 to come with them. While discussing the situation The League of Loises tell us that Earth 12 was a previously unknown universe to them (until Monsieur Mallah and the Brain opened it up last episode) and Mr. Mxyzptlk has used that opportunity to get MAwS Superman to help them. (We know that the League of Lois Lanes has lied to our MAwS Lois and Jimmy, and that Lois Prime didn't trust everyone. The very foundation of the organization could be fabricated to some degree as they all could be considered unreliable narrators but I can't see why they'd like about that big of world building so for now I'm taking that exposition as is). Lois Prime is also always refereed to in the past tense so we as the audience are supposed to assume she's dead.

For the Time Being I'm not going to discuss the League memebers as I am trying to just focus on the easter eggs (or so I told myself) But in the credits they are listed without an earth number and as Leader Lois; Grizzled Lois Lane; Robotic Lois; Lewis Lane; Jalana Olsen

Here are the images we get of Lois Prime. She appears to also be from the Fleischer Superman Theatrical Shorts(1941–1943) just with the art style blended a bit with MAwS.

The next batch of references are the ones from the museum, which is said to be on earth prime.

First we get some establishing shots with a Big Mace (Thanagarian Mace) aka Hawkgirl's next to a Mother Box. This version of the mother box is based on Jack Kirby & Mike Royer's design.

The Next Establishing shot we see a green lantern Power Battery, a T-Sphere, and a leather bound book with a that has a circle with a triangle in it. I'm just not sure what it is. The Book of Black does have a circle with a triangle on it, but it's black so I figure it's probably not that.

Then we have Mxy and Superman enter and Mxy drops the act and admits he just wants to steal and knocks off a golden helmet. The gold helmet that is Doctor Fate's Helmet. Then in the background we have some metal objects, a sword, and a blue cloak. The silver and gold metal objects could be shields, but there's just not enough details for me to sink my teeth into looking deeper. The sword is very generic, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was Excalibur as that shows up from time to time. Another Option could be the Vorpal Sword as its in the same display case with a blue cloak which could be Blue Boy's Witching Cloak. Though its also possible to be Raven's Cloak, or anyone who used a blue cloak.

Next are named objects by Mxy Cosmic Rod aka Stargirl's staff.

And the Flight Ring aka Legioneer flight ring. In the background we can also see Wonder Woman's gauntlets as well as her lasso of truth. The flight ring also blocks the view of a triangle on a staff as well as some metal tubes.

Then Mxy Passes by the Soultaker Sword (The Katana) before grabbing the tape recorder he came for and that's the last of any clear objects in the museum.

Then we get a cute bonding moment with Jimmy and Jalana where she shows off meeting Comet the Super-Horse.

While that happens Earth-12 MAwS Lois sneaks into the locked room to see files on other Loises. The first we see is Lois Lane from Earth-52 who's an award winning reporter.

Then we see Lois Lane from Earth-24. She's sporting a key to the city, but with her style of fashion is very kingdom hearts. They even have the detail of using one of Utada Hikari's hairstyles for her as has been done for Kairi.

Then we get the last computer file Lois Lane from Earth-1 who is "Ready to meet with Dad" I personally think this is another foreshadowing moment that in this iteration of the characters her dad is going to be "The General" that we saw back in episode 2.

Next bit we get is the meet up in Earth 14, which could have them landing in an uninhabited area, or it could be fully desolate. While everyone else is there Mxy steals the ship with Earth-12 MAwS Lois and go Headquarters. The entrance of Headquarters has holograms of several Loises.

The front most Lois lanes we get include Lois from Earth-F aka from the Fleischer Superman Theatrical Shorts(1941–1943) (just like the first other Superman we saw). And across from her we get the another Lois paired with one of the other Superman we saw. Lois Lane from Earth 508 from Superman: The Animated Series (1996-2000)/ Justice League (2001-2004) / Justice League Unlimited (2004-2006)

Next to Lois Lane from Earth 508 we see a Lois Lane as Superwoman.

Next to Lois Lane from Earth-F we see a woman with a Hijab and Labcoat. There are 3 more holograms on this side of the hall, but we don't get a close up and the other Loises.

We do get a few more details of the others as Mxy and Lois of MAwS walk through the hall. We see one black woman and an indigenous woman.

The Last bit of HQ potential Easter Eggs we get is this shot of Mxy opening storage for weapons. However, if they are references I think they're to things outside of DC. The biggest sword in there is Gut's sword from Beserk. I would love to hear from people if they recognize any of these objects. I'm going to make a second post focusing on just that shot here.

The the last ones we get are Lois reviewing the Superman File X

The first Superman we see doesn't have any kind of chest logo is Overman from Earth 17

The second Superman with white cape is Superman is a villainous Justice Lord called Lord Superman.

The Last Superman we see with the face scar doesn't seem to have any counter part so my money is he's a Superman from one of the League of Loises Earths.

I'm really enjoying My Adventures with Superman. The team seems to really get what a Superman story is supposed to be about and how there is supposed to be fun and love in it. I do wish we could have a longer season because the pace is just so fast and it would be nice to settle in. But that's a bigger issue with the industry right now with studios ordering seasons to be short mini series instead of the traditional 26, but that's a conversation for another post and not a reflection of the team making the show.

“Hurry up and get in pairs, one boy and one girl please!”

Marlene sighed as she dropped the two volumes on Kappas on the desk and sat down. By her side, Sirius rolled his eyes.

“Why can’t we just be with the same gender,” he grumbled, taking a fresh roll of parchment out. “No offense, McKinnon.”

“None taken, Black. As long as you get us both a good grade on this essay.”

“Please,” Sirius smirked. “You know I live at the top of the class.”

“Yeah, along with Lupin, Potter and Lily.”

“I love switching places.”

“Come on ladies and gentlemen, get to work,” the Professor clapped her hands. “You have two hours starting now.”

They were barely through their introduction, Sirius putting the calligraphy that had been drilled into him since he had started writing to good use when a whacking sound made them both raise their heads from their books. To their right, James was looking down, a red bruise blooming already on his cheek while Lily was putting a heavy book back on the desk, her green eyes blazing with anger.

“Of the dangers of mixing sexes,” Marlene rolled her eyes, wondering what new obnoxious thing Lily would later on tell her and Mary James had said.

“Leave us with our peers and no one gets hurt,” Sirius sighed.

But when she turned to look at him, he wasn’t looking at James and Lily. His gaze was focused one desk over, to where Mary was pointing at a page while Remus nodded. To be more precise, Marlene mused, Sirius’s gaze was fixed on Remus, as if he didn’t want to miss any movement the other boy made, be it a bare flutter of eyelashes. And there was something, there in Sirius’s eyes, something so tender and so sad at the same time. Something Marlene recognised instantly, something she had seen quite often while looking at herself in the mirror. Marlene hadn’t told anyone, despite the number of times either Lily or Mary had had to nudge her back to reality when she got lost looking at Dorcas Meadowes across the Great Hall. She had a hunch her friends knew but she still hadn’t said the words out loud. She didn’t know if she was ready for that. She didn’t know if she would ever be. But this, this was different. This was a pull she couldn’t ignore, and didn’t want to, like finding a long-lost brother again when you didn’t have any hope left.

Sirius finally looked away from Remus and back at her desk and at her, catching her looking at him. He blushed slightly, his hand already moving in a dismissing manner. Marlene didn’t stop to think, the words coming out of her mind as the easiest thing on Earth.

“You too?” she whispered.

Sirius stared at her, then slowly nodded. They smiled to each other, a new form of relief washing over their faces.

They didn’t get a good grade on their essay. They didn’t care, not really. They weren’t alone anymore.

chuubo's marvelous wish-granting engine by the one shot actual play podcast is a short, ongoing AP detailing events in the life of the eponymous chuubo (played by james d'amato)-- an average fifteen year old boy living in the bucolic port district of fortitude who can rearrange time and space on a whim. joining him are seizhi (played by jeeyon shim), the anxiety-ridden untethered reality virus he has brought into existence to be his bestie, and natalia (played by darcy ross), a human girl allegedly ("allegedly") from the mysterious outer world known as earth who isn't fully convinced that any of this isn't her weirdest fever dream yet.

Time Travel

For Day 16 of Sci-Fi September

Rating: M | CWs: Temporary Character Death, Semi-Graphic Depictions of Blood/Injury | Word Count: 508 | Pairings: Platonic Stobin

A/N: Putting this whole story behind a read-more because of its CWs. Don't want anyone seeing anything that might trigger them. It's not anything more graphic than you might see in a PG-13 movie, I think, but better safe than sorry.

Steve and Robin leaned against each other, sitting on the cold, hard tile of the lab room they’d managed to lock themselves in after being attacked. Both were bleeding profusely from the wounds on their arms and abdomens and legs, trying to apply pressure where they could, but it was pointless.

“We’re going to die in here, Steve,” Robin whispered to him as she removed her hand from his worst bite to see if the bleeding had slowed or stopped. It hadn’t.

“I know,” Steve replied, sadly. He removed his hands from her wounds to instead wrap around her in a tight hug.

She grabbed him back and confessed, “I’m glad it’s together. I don’t know what I would do if we died apart.” He could feel her breath against his neck as she spoke. “Is that bad of me to think?” she asked, voice cracking.

“No, Robs,” he reassured, rubbing her back as best he could through the cold numbness creeping up his arms. “I feel the same way.”

“I’m getting tired, Steve,” she said, crying softly. “I love you.”

He felt his eyes grow hot and tears begin to fall too. “I love you, too, Robs.”

“I hope we reincarnate as twins.” By now her voice had quieted to a slurred mumble, but he still heard her.

“Me too.” He felt her arms slowly grow slack around him and her breathing slow. She wasn’t gone yet, but she was almost there. His eyelids grew heavier and heavier, and he struggled to keep them open, so he didn’t fight it anymore. He nuzzled deeper into Robin’s hair and let himself go.

Only to gasp awake and shoot up in bed. That wasn’t a dream; it was too real. He still felt the warmth and weight of Robin in his arms. Was he dreaming now then? Was this his brain giving out one last sputter of consciousness before he died?

He took in his surroundings and found he was in his old bedroom in his parent’s house. It hadn’t looked like this since before… just Before. Before the Upside Down, before his life went topsy-turvy. Before Robin .

As much as he’d been certain that what happened wasn’t a dream, this sure didn’t feel like one either. Everything felt too detailed and real .

He climbed out of bed to go look for more information. When he was about halfway down the stairs, the phone began to ring. He picked up the pace to reach it before it went to the answering machine.

“Harrington residence,” he answered, wondering who-on-Earth it could be. If he wasn’t dreaming, it was the middle of the night. No one would call then unless it was an emergency.

“Dingus?” he heard Robin ask over the line, voice wet and thick.

“Robbie?” he asked, feeling himself ready to cry again. What was going on?

“You remember it too? I feel like I’m going crazy!” she cried out. “I woke up in my room at my parents’ house, and the wall calendar says it’s August of 1983! ”

Midnight Sparks

Close within the quiet comfort of a flowery meadow long past midnight, Ratchet and Cori sat together, side by side. The human sat with her legs crossed in the grass while the Autobot medic rested his servos behind his back to support his heavy frame. Above them, they watched the night sky, observing the blanket of stars blink and twinkle. It was a pretty sight, to be sure, but Ratchet has seen better. 

And that was when Cori tilted her head to glance at him.

“It’s beautiful, right?”

A little taken aback by her words, Ratchet turned and nodded at her.

“Er, yes. Yes it is.” He thought about her words for a nanosec in his processor. “Not as beautiful as the sights on our own planet, but, it’ll suffice.”

He spoke the truth. Nothing could compare to the atmosphere of pre-war Cybertron. Nevertheless, his optics softened, his gaze lingering a bit too long on Cori. It took a great deal of effort to look somewhere else, like the sky itself.

Ratchet frowned as he lowered his helm, thinking back on Cybertron, yearning for his home once again. Although he came to cherish Earth like a second home, nothing could compare to his original home. 

And then, he felt something warm press against him. He quickly realized that it was Cori’s jacket. She leaned against him, her dark eyes bright and shiny as she smiled up at him.

“Tell me,” she said. “Tell me about Cybertron.”

Her voice was gentle and meek, soothing to his audial receptors. Ratchet blinked, not surprised by her curiosity. He smiled, feeling a wave of warmth spread deep within his chassis.

“Well, what would you like to know, my dear?”

Cori grinned.

“Everything you can tell me.”

Ratchet did as he was told, sharing with her all that he could of the marvels of Cybertron, during the Golden Age and before the Great War. Cori, as sweet and attentive as she was, listened closely to him, occasionally pausing to ask questions of her own. Ratchet was more than delighted to answer her.

She yawned, eventually lifting herself to his body, seeking more warmth to combat the cold of the outdoors. Ratchet responded in kind, bringing her close to his helm while using just one of his servos. 

“It sounds like an amazing home.”

Ratchet nodded at her, his optics lidded with a bittersweet glow.

“Yes, it was.”

The woman didn’t respond. She was already out like a light, snoring. Endeared, Ratchet chuckled a little. In order to not disturb her, he waited. The ground bridge could wait. For now, it was just him, Cori, and the flowery, midnight meadow.

i've been rereading a lot of old supergirl comics lately, so i thought i'd make a post with some pre-crisis recommendations for kara <3

THE GIRL WITH THE SEE-THROUGH MIND!

the superman family #168 kara and lena attempt to help a young empath as she suddenly feels compelled to kill herself. one of my fav issues for lena and one of the best storylines from kara's student advisor era. i also really love the relationship kara has with lena, both as linda danvers and as supergirl.

THE BRIMSTONE CONNECTION

the brave and the bold #160 kara's foster father goes missing so she teams up with batman to track him down. i think kara and bruce have a fun dynamic together and i really like how she's characterized here. i do think that this issue kind of downplays how intelligent kara is in order to uplift bruce's detective skills, but regardless i think its a fun team-up.

THE SUPERGIRL GANG

adventure comics #381 kara goes undercover at an all-girls crime fighting school to investigate a string of robberies committed unknowingly by the students. i really like how this issue focuses a bit on kara's investigative abilities and the things she can do better as linda danvers rather than as supergirl. also babs makes an appearance in this story (rise pre-crisis karababs warriors) <3

THE BATTLE FOR SURVIVAL!

adventure comics #412 kara is chosen to fight in a ceremonial battle by a distant planet's ruler. this issue is SO fun and showcases kara's strength so well. it also features art from art saaf who is one of my favorite artists for pre-crisis kara :)

THE ATTACK OF THE ANNIHILATOR!

detective comics #508-510 kara flies to gotham and helps barbara gordon defeat a crazed and mutated scientist who calls himself the annihilator. unfortunately this is the only multi-issue arc kara and babs have together during pre-crisis (not counting crisis on infinite earths i guess), but i do really enjoy this story (again, rise pre-crisis karababs warriors).

A HEAD-FULL OF SNAKES!

supergirl vol 1 #8 after portraying medusa in a play, a curse is placed on kara that turns her hair into snakes and anyone she looks at into stone. another really fun story :) this issue is definitely one of the best from supergirl vol 1.

CRYPT OF THE FROZEN GRAVES

adventure comics #424 kara attempts to uncover the crimes of the san francisco syndicate by gathering information from a former criminal informer. the art in this issue is SO pretty and i really love how kara is characterized here <3 also features the last appearance of pre-crisis nasty luthor </3

THE VISITORS FROM THE VOID

the superman family #184-186 when fred danvers mysteriously disappears after accepting a secret government job, edna danvers seeks out kara for help in finding him. i really love this storyline for how it develops the relationship between kara and her foster parents, and it's a great showcase of kara's anger and how protective she can be over the people she loves.

CELEBRATION!

supergirl vol 2 #20 clark asks kara to meet him at midvale for a surprise—but before she can do that, kara must battle the parasite. kara's 25th anniversary issue :) you can also read action comics #555 before this if you'd like, it takes place concurrently with this issue but shows clark's pov.

Some neat comic-based details from episode 7 of MAWS

(slight spoilers below for the episode, the 00's Justice League animated series, and for certain DC comics)

So,

When the Lois League make their episode debut, they say our Lois and our Jimmy (and by extension, our Clark) are from Earth-12.

That means it canonically firmly falls under the same DCAU universe that Batman: the Animated Series, STAS, and Batman Beyond.

And that also places it firmly into what's called "the Cartoon Rim" of the DC multiverse

Now, when Mxy's cycling Clark through the different design iterations, he calls out more Earths:

Earth-Twelve, Earth-50, Earth-508, and Weird Earth.

Now, I think the animation team switched up the showcase order a bit, and I'll show you why when I describe each Earth as we know them to be in DC Universe.

First:

• Earth-Twelve (or Earth-B): home to Adam West Batman and apparently now the 1940s Superman (who was originally from Earth-2 where, fun fact, Mxyztplk made his first comic appearance/his origin). So making that universe the home of the first mainstream appearances of DC's Golden Staples tracks.

But then,

• He calls out Earth-50 and the image of The Super Friends Superman from the old 70s-80s show appears.

I think this is actually supposed to be representative of Earth-508 Superman, since there is a comic version of the Super Friends that exists and they just used Earth-1956's Superman as an indicator for that. Which is fair, since the actual ones are copyright owned by Fisher-Price lol.

Now,

The real interesting part is that would make the Earth that the S:TAS/JLU Superman belongs to Earth-50 if the 508 switchup is true. Which seems like another mistake right?

Except

Earth-50 as it is known originated from the Justice League animated series and was established as a parallel sister world to Earth-12, going through the same events until a major event cascades to turn the Justice League into the Justice Lords, a darker and more authoritarian version of themselves.

But that event doesn't happen until years later.

(Keen eyes will notice we see this Superman reference later in the episode as well)

So, if the timelines are staying equal with Clark/Superman staying around the same age of 22-23 that he has been around the start of his appearance in Metropolis/working at the Daily Planet, then the Earth-50 Superman would still look like the normal S:TAS Superman!

So now, I bet you're asking why would they do the Earth switchup in the first place?

Well, mainly the whole scene exists for a nice timeline callback/easter egg for the animation history of Superman as a whole, and the script writers and animators probably didn't think we would catch on.

BUT

I also think, in-universe, that it is just Mxyztplk playing a little trick on curious viewers who would go lore diving and comic folks who would be paying attention.

That is, if it's all intentional.

Sorry for a super prolonged nerd rant on a pretty harmless scene.

I just happened to see it and my brain latched onto the familiar numbers and made a murder board lol.

A notification buzzes on your phone, again bringing you back to Earth. This time it’s a number you recognize: your lovely best friend, Jeongyeon.

“Hi, I’m Chan. I’m really sorry for intruding on your space like this.” You grab his hand and lightly shake it while nodding. His hands aren’t too much bigger than yours, but they’re so warm. Before you can even open your mouth to respond to him, he starts again. “I didn’t plan on this being how we first met”, he says as he retreats his hand to scratch the back of his neck with a shy smile on his lips.

I have a question that I wanna know your thoughts on, if you care to have them :). When and how do you think Brian Kinney became Brian Kinney. The ‘no excuses, no apologies, no regrets’ Brian Kinney. And when do you think he became the stud of Liberty Avenue? I mean Debbie does tell in s1 that Brian has basically been a loose canon since the day Michael met him when they were 14. And in season 5 i think it’s revealed they went to the club for the first time when they were like 17/18 and Brian even makes a tiny brag about the backroom (btw i will never be over that scene because they put them in “teens” clothes and said fuck it) but I always wondered at what point did Brian become ‘the man, the myth, the legend’ and like how that had to be for him and his friends or I guess Mikey since he was obsessed with him and then suddenly he was fucking everyone. Sorry for such a random all over the place question, you can tell I recently started a rewatch.

Oh dear sweet anon! I love all {kind} asks in my askbox equally, but some I love more equally than others. You have truly unleashed the beast with this one as I literally have a doctorate in analyzing characters (sure, at work I call it ‘case conceptualization’ but tomato tomahto and all.) I’m going to put this all under a “read more” because I love my mutuals and I don’t want to subject their dashes to what is undoubtedly going to be an unhinged character analysis. Pour yourself a beverage of your choosing, grab a snack, and buckle in.

My mother is a frigid bitch. My father was an abusive drunk. They had a hateful marriage, which is probably why I am…unwilling or unable to form a long-term, committed relationship of my own. The fact that I drink like a fish, abuse drugs, and have, more or less, redefined promiscuity doesn’t help…much. As a result I have lost the two people in my life that mean the most to me.

Early Childhood

Brian is the youngest of two from married parents. His mother, Joan, is not employed outside the home and is devoted to her Catholic faith. His father, Jack, is employed in some unnamed blue collar job and is a union man. His older sister, Claire, is a presence but left the home and married and had children shortly thereafter. Both Brian’s parents struggle with undiagnosed and untreated alcohol use disorder. They are both abusive in their own ways. Brian suffers physical abuse at the hands of his father. He suffers emotional abuse in the form of religious trauma and neglect in the form of Joan not intervening when Brian is being hit by his father by his mother. He also grows up with the family lore that he was an unwanted child and his father asked him mother to abort him. In his understanding, it is his mother’s Catholic faith that has doomed him to this miserable life. And throughout his life, it is clear his mother cares more for outwards appearances within her church community and for his eternal soul than his happiness here on earth. He observes their marriage as a hateful one. Jack cheats on Joan and apologizes with empty gestures (bringing her flowers) and words (apologies and good behavior before reverting back to his philandering ways). He’s told repeatedly by his father that Jack should never have been a family man, that Kinney men not not designed to be family men. In other words, Kinney men are not made to be “tied down” to one partner. And in the absence of a model or understanding of an ethical nonmonogamy, Brian learns that men, if they have partners, will cheat. Brian also learns from his family that words and apologies are empty - Jack can apologize to Joan but if he never changes, what worth do his words have?

We also see from his family where his determination to earn money and be able to afford a luxurious lifestyle comes from. He is determined to avoid any suffering (failing at monogamy, struggling to pay bills) that they endured.

Adolescence

Around age 14/15 Brian meets Michael Novotny. He either moves to Pittsburgh or several junior high schools feed into one high school (this is not uncommon in the US). Michael worships him immediately - Michael is gay and Brian is cute. And then Brian defends Michael against the school bullies. Brian also meets Debbie and either meets or hears of Uncle Vic. For the first time in his life, Brian has adults who are accepting of their son being gay, he has a model of a gay man who is loved by his family (for the most part - there’s reference to a sister that rejects Vic and a grandmother who may be oblivious to her son’s sexuality). He receives mixed messages from the Novotnys. From Michael, he gets a best friend. Someone with whom he can be silly and have fun. But everything they reference from their teen years is about Mikey’s interests - the Captain Astro club for instance. What were Brian’s interests as a teen? Did anyone nurture them? In Mikey he also gets someone where he can safely explore his sexuality (Patrick Swayze). In Debbie he gets a mother figure who is a firm (albeit imperfect) ally. We don’t know when the Liberty Diner opened or when Debbie began working there, but there is a sense she was also a portal to the world of Liberty Avenue and the diner provided a sort of safe-for-teens queer space. However, Debbie also cares for her son first and foremost (as she should!). She is not Brian’s parent. When she sees Brian’s influence taking Mikey down a path of - getting in trouble at school for fighting back against bullies, sneaking out to go to Liberty Avenue, espousing an nonmonogamy ethic, experimenting with drugs and alcohol - she rightly calls him out. However, with his background, when she - a clearly loving mother who would have no reason to lie - calls him a little shit or an asshole, he believes it. There is a paradox that develops where Brian does not believe words because they are meaningless so refuses to apologize or make promises - unless those words are cruel and directed at him, especially by people he trusts.

For historical purposes, this is taking place in 1985 or 1986 - as the AIDS crisis is reaching an inflection point. The CDC (US Center for Disease Control) estimates that more people were diagnosed with AIDS than in all earlier years combined (source). It is impossible to overstate the impact this had on the queer community more generally, and on Brian more specifically. We see his unwavering commitment to using a condom even in the face of other reckless behavior. As someone who predominantly tops, he is at lower risk of contracting HIV but he cares enough about his partners to never ever fuck without one. His alcohol and drug misuse harms him and him alone, fucking without a condom harms others. Coming of age during the height of the AIDS crisis shaped Brian. We don’t know exactly when Vic seroconverts but we know that relatively shortly before the Pilot episode, Vic was on his deathbed and Debbie was nursing him and they go on that trip to Italy and max out all of Vic’s credit cards… (because those credit card statements come to him in S1) So the AIDS crisis is also front and center in this little safe(r) space Brian has found away from his childhood home. With the AIDS crisis there is also a loss of nearly a complete generation of gay men who could have provided a model for the type of relationship Brian and Justin eventually try to find for themselves. I’ll say it again AIDS WIPED OUT AN ENTIRE GENERATION. We learn from the models around us. If we are an ethnic minority, we learn about that from our parents. As queer people, we often cannot learn from our parents how to be queer. We need queer elders in our communities. Brian comes of age exactly as all those queer elders are dying and changing their lifestyles to protect themselves and their partners from a hideous disease with (at the time) no known treatment and in which the government’s inaction is actively contributing to the loss of entire communities.

And then we have the famous locker room gym teacher incident. Brian’s first (as far was we know) sexual experience was at age 14 (iirc) when he walked into the showers after soccer practice and saw his coach showering. Brian as a gay teen, gets hard, and to cover up any embarrassment about what this reveals about him (it’s the 80s in a public American HS!) gets on his knees and gives the coach a blowjob. This is the first instance of Brian using sex and his sexuality to protect himself and to empower himself. However, he is a kid and a student and he has been taken advantage of by a teacher. No matter how much Brian tells himself (believes) that he was in power in that situation, the power dynamics are always that the teacher has power. That is the reason those laws exist (and even when everyone is an adult, professors cannot sleep with their over 18 college students, nor can they sleep with their graduate students - that goes against every university’s guidelines because that power imbalance cannot be erased). Brian may not self-identify as such but he is a survivor of childhood sexual abuse.

Late Adolescence/Early Adulthood

Around 17/18 we know Brian and Mikey are sneaking into Babylon and Brian is engaging in more experimentation with his sexuality. How is this different than Justin doing the same? Well, first and foremost Justin’s was incredibly lucky that Brian was the one to take him home that first night and treat him with respect and kindness. Brian made sure he enjoyed his first time. Brian’s speech about wanting Justin to always remember this tells us that virginity, while a vile social construct, is something that can feel very important. And the first time being penetrated can set the stage for one’s expectations and beliefs about what is good and normal for future experiences. Does Brian realize this because his first time with penetrative sex was similarly good and kind or because it was the opposite?

We also know that Brian graduates high school and goes to a traditional four year university/college (per fanon it’s Carnegie Mellon where Ben is later a professor and is a prestigious university) where he meets Lindsay. Unlike, Brian, Michael attends a few semesters of a community college. Anon, I’m not sure if you’re in the US but a community (or junior) college is usually a two year college that is intended to prepare students for transferring to complete their education at a 4 year college or university. Some students just complete their Associates Degrees and do not transfer. The reason a student might do this is a) finances - community colleges are public and much less expensive than 4 year institutions (even 4 year public universities) and b) readiness - if a student’s high school grades are not good enough to get into a 4 year institution or the student personally doesn’t feel ready for college course work, attending a community college is a great place to get adjusted to college level coursework (classes tend to be smaller, especially compared with large universities). My spouse is a community college professor, nothing but respect to the community colleges. Mikey probably attended due to finances and poor grades (he is canonically not book smart). Brian comes from a similar background financially - I would find it hard to believe that Jack, who later asks his son for money, was saving for college tuition when Brian was a child. Given the lavish lifestyle Brian later leads, I find it hard to believe he took out (predatory) student loans (he also doesn’t mention them among his expenses post- Concerned Citizens for the Truth so I’m going to believe he doesn’t have them). I am going to guess that he attended a prestigious private university (in 2021-2022 tuition for one year at CMU was $58,924 and in 2023 it was $62,260 with another nearly $20k for room and meal plan) on a combination of Pell Grants (for students with exceptional financial need) and merit based scholarships (due to good grades in high school). This means that Brian, in order to gain admission and to earn scholarships to afford to go, despite all his antics at school (ahem chemistry club!), was studious enough to earn the grades needed. This is no small thing. For comparison, I attended a high school in one of the wealthiest school districts in the US and I had special counselors who helped me decide what schools to apply to, how to craft my applications to be more competitive, and I was taught explicitly ways of approaching SATs (college admissions test) that improved my scores (like test taking strategies). Basically I had every advantage. Brian had none of that. I imagine the school district that the Kinneys and Novotnys would live in, would not have all those advantages. In the US, local tax dollars pay for schools - wealthy areas have better schools as a result. It says a lot about Brian - his determination, his native intelligence, and his ability to code-switch and pass as someone who belongs as at a place like CMU - that he succeeded.

This is also the first time that he is apart from Mikey. He’s making new friends like Lindsay who come from wealth and privilege and getting a taste of that life. He is also away from Mikey’s hero worship and any pressure from Mikey (and Debbie) to date Mikey. He probably sleeps his way through the gay, bisexual, and questioning male student body. I do believe at this point he probably hadn’t instituted his “no repeats” rule but he learns that after a certain number of hook ups, expectations begin to build. He doesn’t want to be his father, so it’s safest to make sure his partners have no expectations. He learns that if people expect the least and the worst from him, he will never disappoint them.

We know that if he wasn’t before, he’s certainly experimenting with drugs in college (references to spiking the punch with ecstasy after Lindsay’s heart was broken). He is studying something that is immediately practical (we do not know if he goes onto graduate school, but my headcanon is that he does not - he would have gotten his masters degree in marketing or business and those are expensive and, again, he doesn’t seem to have student loans). I believe he studies marketing, but though general coursework, his own intelligence and curiosity, he learns enough about the arts and other areas of study to be able to pass in upper class worlds and not betray his working class roots. And to appreciate Justin’s talent. Of course.

Post College/Adulthood

He is hired by Ryder Advertising and quickly moves up the ranks. He purchases his own home (the loft) and decorates it with only the fanciest furniture and appliances. He wears designer clothes. He wants to fit in and belong to this world that is so different than where he came from.

My guess is that by the time he’s working at Ryder, he has fully become the man, the myth, the legend we meet in the pilot.

No apologies - he learned that early on from Jack, apologies are meaningless.

No regrets - life as a gay man may be difficult, but he is not going shy away from experiences just because it might make his life harder. His life has already been hard on someone else’s terms. If it’s going to be hard again, it may as well be on his own terms.

Actions matter more than words, unless those words are from someone he believes cares about him in which case, if they are negative, they are true.

Protect others, even to the detriment of yourself. People want you for what you can do for them (protect them from bullies, make them feel special for one night) not for who you are.

Brian has no model of nonmonogamy that isn’t monogamy with cheating. He cannot conceive, until Justin comes along, that he can have a primary partner and also have an open relationship.

Being a “Stud” is another status symbol, like the loft, like the Jeep, like his wardrobe.

Everything is a wall built from his childhood to protect himself from the pain he experienced and to protect others from what he believes is his destiny - to hurt others the way his father hurt his mother and him. Walls don’t just keep out others, they protect others from the (imagined) monster within.

Through the veil of time, you stood sentinel, a silent witness to the grandeur of nature's tapestry unfurling around you. Observing the ebb and flow of life—the fleeting presence of creatures, the vibrant dance of flora as they bloomed and withered in the cycle of seasons. And with each passing season, your slender form stretched towards the azure sky, leaves unfurling like delicate emerald wings, a testament to the resilience of your life amidst the dense foliage.

As you basked in the warmth of the sun's embrace, consciousness dawned upon you— that you were more than just roots buried in soil. The forest falls silent, as if holding its breath in anticipation of the divine response. And then, with a sigh like the whisper of wind through leaves, the voice speaks again. "You may not understand your purpose, but trust that it serves a greater design. Your roots may be bound to the earth, but your spirit is free to soar."

With that the voice dispersed, and so you continued to be, although the hunger of a life beyond and the curiosity of what could be out there creates a knot in the pit of your stomach.

"Three? Four?" You struggled to recall, your uncertainty leaving you unsettled.

"How can you expect to thrive when your leaves are limp and parched?" It demanded expectantly.

Your roots delved deeper into the damp soil, weaving through layers of decaying leaves and soot. A sense of contentment washed over you as fluid coursed through your veins, calming the rhythm of your heart until it was a mere flicker.

Morning Sun- Gojou Satoru

Morning rays peer down through a pair of sheer white linen curtains hang on a minimalist silver pole. Hitting the bed next to the window, which holds two people covered in a duvet made of the same colored white linen. The two people submerged in the morning sun sleep peacefully, naked and in each other’s embrace.

Softly one of them opens their eyes, blinking a few times adjusting to the light. After their vision adjusts they see what they could describe only as an angel who has descended to earth and for some unfathomable reason decided to lay here with them. Here in a simple plain apartment room of one, vacant majority of the time, lonely, and only dressed in necessities. Lying asleep on a bed that sits on the ground with only an alarm clock and a phone that is plugged right by it.

How this person’s soft silk white hair that seems to defy ground, never wanting to be tamed brushes their arm. The arm that this angel of a person uses as a pillow even though it does not seem comfortable. This person is enveloped in the warm embrace that the sun brings, making a halo around them causing them to look even more eternal if that was even possible.

The person whose body was carved out of marble, smooth, defined, and slick. Where every little detail was put on display from their swan neck to their generously sized chest, down to their stomach where etch out is a six-pack, their thighs also were made generously. Their body was the peak example of lean muscle and elegance. Nothing showed this more than their hands, slender, long fingers. Slightly rough calluses brought from years of experience of fighting.

Lashes so white that they would look clear on their own flutter against their face showed signs that this person, this angel was waking up. Then those long lush lashes move a few times never fully lifting all the way only getting to the mid-way point before falling again. Finally, this person’s eyes open fully and bring with them the view of the universe and everything it is and not.

Clear pools of water could be one way to describe their eyes or a load of sapphires melted together. Both descriptions are correct yet both can’t seem to begin at what they truly are. The shades change constantly, never picking to stay, expanding and collapsing simultaneously holding in them the secrets to all one wants to know. While all answers seem as if they could be found here there is unknown. Where there are no answers and sometimes the answer is neither. These eyes of someone tired of all that they know and hold.

Holding on to others who need them till everything is done. Where then they can finally rest if that will ever happen. This person whose experience and knowledge that appeared infinite somehow ended up in this simple bed that sits in a one-room apartment, laying in the morning sun and soon to be gone.
