I love to see how people came together for the Feb.28 blackout!!! It’s nice to see people educating themselves on how spending affects political climate.

HOWEVER

One-day blackouts are mostly SYMBOLIC and have little effect on the boycotted businesses 😅 Most people still buy from them before and after the blackout, so they make money regardless.

We need to COMMIT to LONGTERM BOYCOTTS!!!!!!!!!

This will look different for everyone! If you don’t know where to start, pick a current crisis that makes you really fucking angry and find out who is funding it. There are apps and accounts dedicated to checking items/brands/businesses. Fucking hell you can literally just search “current boycotts”.

Don’t get me wrong, a general economic blackout can inform the public that boycotts are already going on, but like……that’s kind of it. It rarely calls out specific businesses or explains why they’re on boycott, so they don’t receive much negative publicity - the news focuses more on the fact that a blackout is happening, not who it’s for or why. And as explained above, it won’t affect profits if people still support those businesses every other day of the year. It feels performative, and while performative action can help bring attention to issues, it’s doesn’t do much to actually support the people at risk.
