I have an R-5, which is the R-8′s little brother. It’s not really a pitch slider. The value slider can be applied to any parameter of the note (or drum in this case) including velocity or volume or pitch. It’s an essential part of why they called the machine a ‘human rhythm controller’ because using this feature allowed one to program in consideration of how a real person would play percussion. For example, most people have dominant limbs and almost no one is capable of hitting every note with the same intensity. There’s a slight bit of chaos in human performance.   I believe the original intention was for programming jazz or latin music (think drum roll swells as one example). A lot of us, however, would abuse that value slider to make bird sounds out of whistles or industrial sounds by dropping cowbells two octaves. It took away the tedium of step-editing all of these functions at a time when DAWs were in their infancy.

Frankly, the automation functions of DAWs work similarly, but on the Roland drums machines it provided a fast remedy for the desire of immediacy. By that I mean it made the process a hell of a lot more fun and often to lead to an avenue of creative inspiration one probably wouldn’t have thought to explore.

It wasn’t perfect, and there are things I tried do that won’t work such as controlling another MIDI drum machine or synth with the Roland and expecting the value slider patterns to translate. 

I still want an R-8. They’re over 30 years old and the prices are still too high but it’s a beast. There are mods and a small community is homebrewing cards for it.

I’ll stop there because I think only four people seeing this know what the hell I’m talking about. 

I have a poor quality track I did using the value slider to create a melody on the hi-hats. I’ll send it to anyone who is curious.
