Just so we're perfectly clear, I'm not skipping DATV because "wHy arE tHEsE WOKE dEVs PuTTing TOP SURGERY SCARS in MYYYY FaNTAsy AHhhhHHHHH!!!" I'm skipping DATV because "Fuck Bioware for laying off their people without severance pay after getting what they needed from them, and fuck them for deciding to take away the choice-based carry-over narrative that has always been the PRIMARY DRAW of the Dragon Age franchise!"
Juuuuuust want to make sure that line is drawn.

The news that we'd get to customize our Inquisitor in Veilguard inspired me to figure out Ghisharen's canonical appearance again.
DAI's own editor was, as usual, not very cooperative, but I remembered that I had a draft in the Dragon's Dogma 2 CC, and tried working on that. I'm actually satisfied with the result!

dude I cooked up trying out wof roblox finding out it was free to play. I got him stuck in the floor so many times it gave me a brilliant idea; that he just didn’t have them at all.
Introducing, Smog the legless skywing, the little wyrm, the man of the hour! I’m a little bit obsessed with him I kinda love him. The dude ever. He’s outwardly rude and shitty to most strangers (just repaying what they send his way <3) but can’t resist helping someone in need or danger. Generic hard ass protagonist with a heart of gold except he’s a dragon with no legs

One of the notes on the sea serpent post had this to say and I think it’s a very good point!
I’d say it’s all in how you frame it. It’s the age-old question. Like, what is a dragon? Is it “any large mythical reptile”? Or is it “a mythical serpent from European folklore that originated in the Greek drakōn, itself almost certainly an exaggerated description of a python or other large snake”? The first description could include the Chinese long, the North American horned serpent, the South American boiúna, the Australian rainbow serpent… the second, meanwhile, is a lot more restrictive.
So, in this case, what is “the sea serpent”? If the description is “a serpent that lives in the sea”, then yes, Leviathan could indeed be one of the older versions.
However!
The legend of Leviathan is that of the chaos battle, the defeat of an older water or water-adjacent deity to create order out of chaos. This is derived from the likes of Lotan and Tiamat, and there’s a clear degradation of the concept, from chthonic deities gradually being demoted to dragons/serpents of chaos and eventually great beasts that inhabit our world. It’s complicated. Leviathan also sometimes has multiple heads, something which I don’t associate with sea serpents. Tangential but worth mentioning.
Serpents that live in the sea have existed for a long time. Laocoon and his sons were killed by them. Aelian mentions them. Jormungandr is a big serpent that lives in the sea.
But it was the Scandinavian sea serpent that created the modern conception of the sea serpent as a serpent that lives in the sea which exists, and can be seen. It precipitated the whole sea serpent craze. Sober eyewitnesses reported sea serpents from all over the world.
Tumblr media
Also it is literally called “sea serpent”. Not Jormundandr or Leviathan or Tiamat or whathaveyou, but “sea serpent”, not a proper name but the name of an animal. The great Scandinavian sea serpent is, indeed, referred to as such (sjøorm).
It was Olaus Magnus’ account that created a mythic landscape in which just about every unfamiliar thing in the sea became a sea serpent, from decomposed whales to long strands of kelp
Tumblr media
to large sea life towing marine debris
Tumblr media
to skim feeding sei whales
Tumblr media
to whale penises
Tumblr media
to stranded oarfishes
Tumblr media
to whales tangled in debris (or maybe just another whale penis)
So yes, Leviathan (and Jormungandr) precede the sea serpent, and could be considered the origins of the myth, I agree! But for a more restrictive definition, I would say the sea serpent as we know it was born with Olaus Magnus’ account.

So I haven't seen tdp in a long time (gave up after season 3 I think?) but it sounds like the show is going off the rails and does want to be like animated game of thrones. Or at least wants to be seen as an adult show despite it originally being for kids? They even have an EP called "the red wedding".
You are correct, I can't find the interview but they have been branding themselves as "GoT for kids" since s1, and also said this. When I saw that episode title I was like "If this wedding ends with every single attendee dead, I will take back everything mean I've said about the show" and then not a single person was even hurt, and that is this show in a nutshell

“You’ll need to feed her gems. That’s what all the books say. My parents gave Spike lab-grown gems and that worked for him, they’re cheaper and easier to grow too.”
“Lab-grown gems don’t cut it. They lack so much of the mineral residue that comes from digging them straight from the earth. Minerals that dragons need.”
“Okay, in that case, I’m sure you’ll find plenty of minerals in Marble’s family’s farm!”
“Yes, but what kinds of gems are they growing? Not all of them have the same nutritional value. She’ll need rubies, and sapphires, and emeralds, even diamonds.”
Fluttershy scribbled frantically in her notes as Twilight and Ember went back and forth, giving her conflicting advice on how to take care of her little dragon. She now realized she should have done this long ago, but late was better than never. Especially when it came to raising Rosemary as best she could, she owed it to her to learn from experts.
“You know what else won’t cut it? Pony food. There’s no way she’ll get nearly enough sustenance on that.”
“Of course that alone isn’t enough, but Spike—“
The pegasus mare had the feeling this would turn into an argument over Spike’s upbringing and ultimately get her nowhere. So she decided to move on to the next point she wanted to address.
“Um, what about fire-breathing? How do you handle that?”
“The only way you can guarantee she won’t mistakenly burn your house down is if you moved into a cave.”
Ember gestured around the room.
“This isn’t structurally sound at all. But a cave would be good for her, it’d keep her in touch with her roots.”
“Though there are spells that can make your home more fireproof. Like here, this is a good one…”
Despite Twilight’s assurance, Fluttershy was not feeling any more confident about this. Was she supposed to listen to Ember, who knew all about dragons but very little about Equestria? Or Twilight, who had raised a dragon in Equestria but hardly knew anything about the dragons’ way of life? It felt like either way she wasn’t getting the full picture.
“Darling?”
Rarity tapped on her shoulder, sensing how anxious she was.
“You know little Rosemary best. Remember to listen to your instinct above all else.”
But Fluttershy didn’t know what her instinct was telling her.

Thinking about those time travel/animal au’s, and now I’m thinking about Desmond as an emperor dragon from flight rising, (it’s basically a zombie/Frankenstein hydra, if u don’t know what it is) also maybe each head represents a different ancestor and the older the ancestor, the more decayed the head (example: Altair would be mostly skeletal with some mummified flesh, but des himself would be mostly intact except the bad burns.)
I feel like the official art from the wiki doesn’t do the concept justice so here’s a link to a fanart by @/pencilcat instead
It should also be noted that, this kind of emperor dragon should have at least four heads with different elements.
… wanna make it more fun?
We’ll go with the usual dragon!Desmond setup and he becomes pretty much the keeper of the Apple, growing close to Altaïr and even managing to change the past enough that the tragedy of the Ibn-La'Ahads does not come to pass. When Altaïr dies, he dies surrounded by family, having said his goodbye to Desmond beforehand. Desmond flies away, taking Altaïr’s Apple with him, to grieve his death and to celebrate the life he lived. Then… he starts getting this itch in on his neck. Like, it’s so itchy that he just starts scratching it.
Then his nails dug too deep and something starts gushing from the wound he just made. It looked… like whiteish fluids mixed with blood??? Like, it’s super gross and Desmond is going “Oh fuck! Oh shit! What the fuck!” because it’s still gushing.
Then…
Something starts moving underneath Desmond’s skin, wiggling and… ewewewewewew
Until something longer and larger than his head burst out of the wound, a loud piercing scream erupting from it that makes Desmond scream his head off in horror because this FEELS LIKE SOME HORROR SHIT WHAT THE FUCK!
Just when Desmond wondered if he was going be killed from the inside by a parasite, the thing shook the remaining white fluid and Desmond realized it was a dragon head, not the same as his but definitely dragon-shaped. The dragon head turned to look at him and blinked its golden eyes that Desmond recognized immediately.
Altaïr’s voice was full of confusion as he asked, “Desmond? Why… why am I still alive?”
Unorganized Notes:
Okay, I had to read this up in the wiki so please excuse me if I make any mistakes but each dragon head has a different ‘element’ which I am assuming is connected to their ‘flight’. As such, their elements would be the following:
Altaïr: It was a toss-up between Light and Arcane to be honest because Arcane is curious dragons who like to know the unknown while Light is the most scholarly and holds the pursuit of the truth. In the end, the fact that Light Dragons have golden eyes made me choose Light Dragon for Altaïr.
Ezio: Ezio would probably be Earth as he is the most ‘stable’ of the four, creating a legend that last ages. But Nature is also a good fit to show how Ezio truly thrived as a nurturer during his time as the mentor of the Italian Brotherhood.
Ratonhnhaké:ton: I think Lightning would be a good fit for Ratonhnhaké:ton, especially when we remember how he refuses to compromise the way people wish him to. He wants to change the world and, really, everything he did had an impact that everyone had to adapt to.
Desmond: Honestly, Desmond was meant to have the light flight but, since I gave that to Altaïr, Desmond is now the Arcane dragon, because of how Arcane dragons pursue their dreams, often oblivious to the effects of their actions which works well with Desmond’s mission to give his ancestors a better fate without thinking of the butterfly effect (or not caring)
Possible dragon head candidates: Edward (Wind - carefree and free), Haytham (Ice maybe? Shadow would have been a good candidate but Haytham isn’t fickle and Plague would have worked to show how the tragedy of his past shaped him but he's not savage enough to fight those like him)
The idea is that they’re an immortal dragon that sorta becomes a legend among the Assassins and Templars.
This would also have them meet Arno and the Frye twins, acting like their guides… contradicting guides at times but guides nonetheless.
They are also the guardians (hoarders) of POEs. And really, it’s a bad idea to try and get the POEs they guard.
They do start to decay the ‘older’ they get (except Desmond) but, for some reason, they never end up becoming fully skeletal which is weird. Underneath their skin are lightly glowing lines that matches the lines of the Isus so definitely Isu BS.
