Don Felizardo de Rivera, Founder of Pila
Don Felizardo de Rivera y Evangelista (1755-1810) was the eldest of the three Rivera brothers, Don Felizardo, Don Miguel and Don Rafael. They were the owners of the estate Hacienda de Sta. Clara. They were the sons of Don Juan de Rivera, who had inherited the estate from the Spanish noble family, the Thenorios, and passed it on to his sons.
In the 18th century, due to flooding from its original location near the Laguna de Bay, the original town of Pila and its Church needed to be located to higher ground. So the Riveras planned to move it, just like their ancestor the Datu of Pila, Datu Maguinto, did in the 13th century.
However, a long, heated and controversial dispute rose between two prominent families at the time: The Riveras and the Relovas ("Pros" and "Antis". Don Regino Relova y San Antonio wanted the relocation on his land. Don Felizardo Rivera insisted that the town and church be moved to his hacienda in Sta. Clara.
Don Felizardo won after a long battle (starting October 14, 1794 and ending on July 13, 1803) after made an agreement with the parish priest: If the church was relocated to his estate, he pledged "the spiritual and material support of the Riveras to the church of St. Anthony in perpetuum up to the last of their line." The parish priest agreed.
Don Felizardo donated his lands to the church and to the municipal government but he also retained ownership of the lots surrounding what was to be the town plaza. He became the architect of the town's design, following Spanish colonial layout. He even built a kiln for manufacturing bricks and tiles for rebuilding the church, which was "transferred stone by stone" from its old location. The the ancestral houses were built around the plaza and the town municipio (municipal hall) was built opposite the church. With the assistance of the prominent families of Oca, Ruiz, and de Castro, he rebuilt the town of Pila ("Nuevo Pila") as it is to this day.
Don Felizardo served as gobernadorcillo in 1805, 1807, and 1809. He died on October 13, 1810 at the age of 55. He asked that "he be robed in the Franciscan habit upon his death and that a funeral mass be celebrated with him facing the altar of the newly-built church prior to his burial in the church crypt." His will (currently in the possession of the Rivera Family) was notarized by the town mayor at the time. At the time of his death, both pros and antis came to pay their respects and drop the long feud (the families later intermarried.) Don Felizardo's son Jose de Rivera later took over the gobernadorcillo post in 1811.
Don Felizardo de Rivera is the recognized founder of (Nuevo Pila) present-day Pila, Laguna, and the ancestor of the four main prominent families in Pila: Rivera, Relova, Agra and Alava.
WHEN A TOWN HAS TO MOVE: HOW PILA (LAGUNA) TRANSFERRED TO ITS PRESENT SITE (1794-1811) Luciano P.R. Santiago Philippine Quarterly of Culture and Society, Vol. 11, No. 2/3 (June/September 1983), pp. 93-106 (14 pages) https://www.jstor.org/stable/29791789
--------------------------------------------------
During the 16th and 17th centuries, one of the earliest known leaders of Pila under Spanish Colonial Period was Don Antonio Maglilo (1696-1712), who governed Pila like his father Don Francisco Maglilo (1599), (Santiago, Ancient Pila, pg 11), the descendant of datu Maguinto.
In 1728, Don Maglilo’s descendant, Don Juan de Rivera, the founder of one of Pila’s most prominent families, the Rivera clan, became mayor of Pila. The Rivera’s were a “major branch of the Maglilo(s)” and changed their surname to “Rivera”, the “Taga-ilog”, or “People of the River”. (Santiago, Ancient Pila, pg 17).
Don Juan de Rivera married Doña Josepha Thenorio, who descended from Spanish nobility from Extremadura, Spain. The Thenorio family matriarch was Doña Maria Cortés de Monroy, the sister of Spanish Conquistador Hernán Cortés (1485-1547). (Santiago, Ancient Pila, pg 16). (Writer’s Note: Cortes had relations and a child with the Aztec princess Doña Isabel Moctezuma (born Tecuichpoch Ixcaxochitzin; 1509/1510 – 1550/1551), a daughter of the Aztec ruler Moctezuma II, and Cortes’s sister Doña Maria’s descendants married the descendants of a Philippine Pre-Hispanic king.)
Don Juan's descendant, Don Felizardo de Rivera (1755-1810), was at first a town executive from 1792 to 1793. He was governor of Pila in 1792. During the town move, he had drawn up grid plans (Cuadricula) in 1790 for the new site (where Pila was to be moved) based on the classical Spanish system of 'church-plaza-town hall complex' as originally prescribed by the 'Laws of the Indies (1573)' (laws issued by the Spanish Crown for town planning). He had become a self-taught architect. When the transfer was officially sanctioned (approved), he implemented his plans by serving as gobernadorcillo (governor) in 1805, 1807, and 1809 (he died in 1810). Because of his orderly design (of the town), Don Felizardo is considered the founder of 'Nuevo Pila (New Pila).' Don Felizardo retained all the residential lots around the rectangular plaza between the church and the town hall for the ancestral houses. The principal street is christened 'Rivera', which connects (the town) 'like a long umbilical cord' (back to) Pagalangan. (Santiago, Ancient Pila, pg 25). All the lots around the town plaza were given by Don Felizardo to his heirs, and the ancestral houses now stand on those lots.
Pila was moved again due to flooding from the lake, to Don Felizardo’s Hacienda in Santa Clara, Laguna. (Santiago, The Roots of Pila, Laguna, pgs 9, 10). On May 20, 1804, Pila Church was also moved to land at the hacienda. (Santiago, The Roots of Pila, Laguna, pgs 10, 11, 13) Today, the 200-plus year-old church is now called the San Antonio de Padua church, which was declared the National Shrine of San Antonio de Padua, contains a relic of the saint and is one of the oldest churches in the Philippines. The ruins of the original church are still standing at Pagalangan and have a historical marker as the site of the original church of Pila.
Don Felizardo is considered the founder of the present-day town of "Nueva Pila" ("New Pila") and the town’s designer and architect in the Spanish colonial grid style of city planning. (Santiago, The Roots of Pila, Laguna, pg 12). The Pila Municipal Hall was later built in June 1931, across from the Church, on land previously owned by Doña Corazon Rivera de Del Mundo, daughter of Don Luis Rivera. (Santiago, The Roots of Pila, Laguna, pg 20).
In his 1810 Last Will and Testament, Don Felizardo identifies himself as “Taong Tunai at Maguinoo” (a true maginoo). The document is with the Rivera family of Pila, Laguna.

Trans folks will someday be revered as the visionaries they are. Until then, the violence must end.
The Human Rights Campaign has reported that at least 30 trans and gender non-conforming people were killed in the United States in 2023. 87% were people of color, with 50% being Black trans women. 77% were murdered with a firearm, and 50% were misgendered or deadnamed by authorities or the press. First, let’s say their names: Savannah Ryan Williams Jean Butchart Kejuan Richardson Amiri Reid LaKendra Andrews London Price Lisa Love Dominic Dupree a.k.a. Anti-trans lawmakers have changed that. The political divide is creating “two Americas” for LGBTQ+ people. Abolitionists joined together to work for the immediate end to the institution of slavery and the cessation of racial discrimination and segregation. They faced steep opposition from many quarters, including a number of Christian denominations who asserted that sacred scripture not only condoned but mandated the practice of slavery.  Young people conducted a number of sit-in demonstrations at Southern lunch counters to end Jim Crow laws of segregated public facilities, all while enduring the abusive taunts of onlookers and the crashing batons of local police. Demonstrators faced imprisonment and the imposition of permanent criminal records. Feminists formed a new wave in the fight for women’s suffrage against a high tide of obstructionism within a patriarchal system of male domination and misogyny, and an attitude that the enfranchisement of women would destroy Christianity and civilization itself. The Church convicted physicist and astronomer Galileo Galilei on the charge of heresy by insisting that the Earth revolves around the Sun, rather than, as per Church teaching, that the Earth was the immovable center of the universe with the Sun revolving around the Earth. Galileo spent the remainder of his life under house arrest. Joan of Arc, the teenager who helped defeat the English in her native France, became one of the greatest war heroes in French history. In spite of this, she was tried by the Catholic Church on the charge of heresy in rejecting Church authority in preference for direct inspiration from God, and most importantly, by donning men’s clothing. Joan died by burning at the stake. Alan Turing, mathematician, logician, philosopher, cryptanalyst, and one of the original creators of the computer was largely responsible for cracking Nazi coded messages, which many believe shortened the war by two to four years. Many also say he saved Great Britain. However, the British government chose to convict Turing on the charge of being homosexual and ordered him to undergo “chemical castration” by taking estrogen injections as an alternative to spending two years in prison. Turing took his life a few weeks before his 42nd birthday. Governments and powerful individuals have long devised ways of silencing opposition for the purpose of maintaining and extending their control and domination. They commit genocide upon the true human liberators, the profits, the visionaries who advocate for a just and free world. These… http://dlvr.it/T0Yg34

If you didn’t see it, you probably wouldn’t believe it.
Or you’d blame the same cartels that caused an uproar within town, if you’d been here long enough to know where to point the blame.
But the matter of the fact was this: if there was a reason eight blacked out Escalades were driving down the center strip in town, heading towards old Hollygrove Manor, you’d wonder—what the fuck was this about? Was someone coming to play? Was an original Castro member coming home? Couldn’t be—Maria Castro-Reyes never left. Some believed the real matriarch of the Castro cartel would live to a hundred and one, stick both middle fingers up and tell her enemies to burn in hell before she croaked on the spot.
Again, these are the thoughts of civilians who have lived here long enough.
But it still didn’t make sense. The rushing parade of black drew people out from the shops, those basking in the heavenly glow of another endless sunny day were pulled from their conversation. Some stood. Some stopped in their tracks and considered to question the presence in front of them.
But the cars drove on.
Within one sat a man, the files skewed across the seat within the back of the car, as his companion sat in the front. Names. All four of them, all of the powerhouses that had slipped into the underworld—but their families remained here.
Jack Parker could not be convinced otherwise that these four weren’t in on the family business.
Giada Rinaldi’s weight within Messina was considered inoperable. Twelve men trying to serve her papers ended up being twelve bodies they had to ship back to grieving families.
Samuel Stone had decided to ‘retire’ within the masses of Mexico City—where, as expected, the weight of the heavy-hitting Don was enough to know getting close to him didn’t end in a rainfall of bullets from both sides. It seemed old man Stone was still willing to risk the lives of everyone around him.
Jack flipped the page, revealing the other two.
Manuel Almeida had passed, but his father lived on, the Isle of Sao Miguel untouchable to those who were not commoners. There was no hot spring his boys could hide in, commit surveillance without Jose Manuel himself peeking out from his hovel and slitting his boy’s throat.
That one was a hard pill to swallow. Bullets and punching—fine. Anything else was harrowing.
Last—never least.
Maria Castro-Reyes. Parked right the fuck in town, nothing to hide. She was the matriarch, the last of a century’s worth of criminals. Powerful, beautiful. She had the makings of a politician, Jack considered in a dark thought, given how the woman lived a cut-throat life. Cold. Calculated. Willing to risk it all, but there was the inkling that, like the Castro’s he had studied in files upon files before him—she was willing to draw the line at family.
Maybe that’s where he would start.
Infiltration wasn’t his idea, he considered, as the approach of the car to the home converted for their use slowed to a stop. Some of them wouldn’t hide. He wouldn’t. Couldn’t. Face seen by the funeral director. And the fleet of cars with blacked out windows hid the crew of men and women from all walks of life willing to do the unthinkable.
Stepping out of the truck, sunglasses poised on the bridge of his nose, as he looked around his crew. “Start unpackin’ the computers and surveillance first boys—we’re gonna finalize the plan and start infiltrating the cartels in town.”
Jack Parker planned to flip this town on its head.

It was his way of thanking the public for all of the affection they had shown him throughout his career as one of the most prolific and highly regarded composers and singers Mexico has ever produced.Jiminez, Jos A.Jimnez, Jos Alberto Gimnez, Jos Alfredo, Jos Alfredo Gimnez, Jos Alfredo J., Jose Alfredo Jimemez, Jose Alfredo Jimenes, Jose Alfredo Jimenez, Jos Alfredo Jimnez Sandoval, Jose Alfredo Jiminez, Jos Antonio, Jos Antonio Jimnez, Jose Gimenez, Jose Jimenez, Jose Jimenez, Sr., Jos-Alfredo Jimenez, Luis A. One of his last appearances on Mexican television occurred in 1973, just months prior to his death, where he introduced his last song, "Gracias", accompanied by his wife, singer Alicia Juarez. He was only forty-seven years old when he died in Mexico City, of complications resulting from cirrhosis of the liver. Like many of his contemporary stars, such as Jorge Negrete, Pedro Infante, and Javier Solís, Jiménez died young. The country artist Luke Tan recorded a disc of his favorite Jiménez songs in Spanish, including some English translations. In addition, Joaquín Sabina paid homage to Jiménez with his song, "Por el Bulevar de los Sueños Rotos" ("On the Boulevard of Broken Dreams"). In addition to his own recordings, many of his songs have been recorded by renowned artists from around the Spanish-speaking world, most notably by the following artists: Selena, which she sang “Cuando Nadie Te Quiera”, Miguel Aceves Mejía, Enrique Bunbury, Antonio Aguilar, Tania Libertad, Luis Aguilar, Lola Beltrán, Vikki Carr, Gualberto Castro, Rocío Dúrcal, Alejandro Fernández, Pedro Fernández, Vicente Fernández, Los Relámpagos Del Norte con Cornelio Reyna y Ramón Ayala, Los Tigres del Norte, Manolo García, Little Joe Hernández & The Latinaires, Julio Iglesias, Pedro Infante, the Mexican rock group Maná, Luis Miguel, Jorge Negrete, Sunny Ozuna & The Sunliners, María Dolores Pradera, Javier Solís, and Chavela Vargas. The first ever songs of José Alfredo Jiménez to be recorded.Īfter this promising beginning, he composed more than 1,000 songs. He recorded "Ella, "Yo", "Serenata huasteca" and "Tu Recuerdo y yo". Don Miguel was impressed and promised to support him and record his songs. A few days later, José Alfredo arrived to the radio and started singing a capella his songs “Ella” and some more. Miguel asked him to look for him at the Radio Station XEW, where he had an audition called Amanecer Ranchero, together with the Mariachi Vargas and Rubén Fuentes. Would you like to hear some? Maybe you like them”. I`m waiter because of necessity, but I compose songs. The clerk came to him and asked: “Don Miguel. One day in 1948, Miguel Aceves Mejía and some friends arrived for dinner to a restaurant called La Sirena, in Santa Maria de la Rivera. He was discovered in 1948 by the singer Miguel Aceves Mejía and according to him he did not play an instrument and did not even know the Spanish word for " waltz" or what " keys" his songs were in. Jiménez was born in Dolores Hidalgo, Guanajuato, Mexico.

"Our goal here is to build a team that can win a World Series, not finish with 81 wins. But they print the standings every day, so it isn't like we can avoid seeing them. It would have been nice to have a winning record, but we have a lot more important issues ahead of us." Detroit Tigers second baseman Harold Castro throws to first base over Minnesota Twins' Jake Cave for the double play hit into by Twins' Gary Sanchez through the fourth inning of a baseball recreation, Saturday, Oct. 1, 2022, in Detroit. Carlos Osorio / AP With the rating tied at 2 within the sixth, Javier Báez was hit by a pitch from Ronny Henriquez (0-1). Báez moved to second on a fly ball. Harold Castro grounded to first baseman Luis Arraez, however he missed Henriquez together with his throw, permitting Báez to attain the go-ahead run. Daniel Norris (2-0) picked up the win with 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Andrew Chafin picked up his second save after A.J. Hinch used nearer Gregory Soto within the eighth."When you have to go to the bullpen in the fifth, it is going to create matchup problems at some point, because you only have so many guys out there," Hinch stated. "We had a plan, but we had to adjust it a lot as the game went on."Tigers starter Drew Hutchison allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks in 4 1/3 innings, whereas Minnesota's Dylan Bundy gave up two runs on 5 hits in 5 innings."Our season started out pretty dang good for the first four months, and then it didn't happen for us in the last two," stated Bundy, who led the Twins with 29 begins. "We've got these last four games, and then I'm going to take a break before I sit down and assess everything that happened this year." After being shut out for the twenty second time on Friday — probably the most by an AL staff within the DH period — the Tigers solely wanted three batters to attain. After Akil Baddoo flew out, Riley Greene singled to proper and the ball acquired by Matt Wallner for a two-base error. Báez adopted with an RBI single. The Tigers added a run on Eric Haase's fourth-inning residence run, however Mark Contreras made it 2-1 with a lead-off homer within the fifth. Two of the following three batters singled, bringing Jose Cisnero out of the Tigers bullpen. He struck out Jose Miranda, however Gio Urshela tied the sport with a base hit.Miranda led off the eighth with a base hit, and the Twins put in Billy Hamilton as a pinch runner. Alex Lange threw his fifteenth wild pitch of the season, shifting him one forward of Shohei Ohtani for the major-league lead, and Hamilton took third on Urshela's floor out.WELCOME TO THE MAJORSBrendon Davis made his major-league debut for the Tigers, taking part in third base. He flew out in his first at-bat earlier than placing out twice.FILLING IN AS NEEDEDHutchison, who did not make his first begin till June 14, will end the season ranked second on the Tigers in each begins (18) and innings (105 1/3). The 31-year-old hadn't began greater than 5 video games in a season since beginning 50 for the Blue Jays in 2014-15. "Those were very meaningful innings for us," Hinch stated. "In a year where we've used 17 starting pitchers, he's been a guy who we've been able to keep in the rotation. He's someone who has started Opening Days in the past, and now he's been able to reinvent himself as a pitcher."UP NEXTThe groups end their season collection on Sunday afternoon. The recreation will begin at 12:10, lower than an hour earlier than the scheduled begin of the Lions-Seahawks recreation throughout the road at Ford Field.
Joey Wentz (2-2, 3.54) will begin in opposition to Twins prospect Simeon Woods Richardson, who can be making his major-league debut. [ad_2] Source link

We Asked 12 Bartenders: What’s the Most Underrated Tequila?
Tumblr media
America can’t get enough tequila. In 2018, sales of tequila grew more than any other spirits category both on- and off-premise, with on-premise volume sales increasing more than 7 percent overall, according to Nielsen CGA. The U.S. is also, by a long way, the largest tequila export market in the world, currently scooping up more than 80 percent of the bottles that leave Mexico.
A handful of very recognizable tequila brands such as Jose Cuervo, Sauza, Patrón, and Don Julio continue to drive those impressive sales, but by no means are these the only labels that should be on your radar — or your home bar.
To help broaden your (and our) agave horizons, VinePair asked bartenders around the country which bottles and brands aren’t getting the love they deserve. From top-selling workhorses to the most sustainable labels, here are the most underrated tequila brands, according to bartenders.
“Tequila Fortaleza, which means ‘fortitude,’ is one of the greatest products produced in Jalisco, Mexico. This brand was launched in 2005 but has over 140 years of history. Both [its] Blanco and Reposado are on the spicy side compared to tequilas from Los Altos, the Highlands of the Jalisco region. This tequila producer uses a brick oven to cook, and stone to crush, the agave. Those methods make Fortaleza an absolutely authentic and traditional high-quality tequila.” — Slava Borisov, Mixologist, Travelle at The Langham, Chicago, IL
“Tapatio Tequila Reposado is the most underrated tequila. Any lover of agave should have this in their liquor cabinet. It’s great for nightly sipping or as a treat when introducing someone to a fine agave spirit.” — Robert Noyola, Bartender, Bibo Ergo Sum, Los Angeles, CA
“Riazul has really surprised me. [This] small operation that started back in 2008 has made a little splash here in Colorado this past year. Richer than most tequila, Riazul has a velvety finish. The price point makes it easily workable into menu drinks, which is something I value.” — Devin Chapnick, Lead Bartender, Poka Lola, Denver, CO
“Semental is a great product for a great price. The añejo has classic markers [of] good blue agave notes and a gentle framing of wood.” — Lucas Huff, Mixology Director, Bently Heritage Estate Distillery, Minden, NV
“Pueblo Viejo, which is made at Casa San Matias, a family-owned-and-operated [distillery] and one of the oldest in Jalisco. This vegetal, herbaceous tequila is a versatile, cost-effective workhorse. … [It’s] versatile enough to be used in any tequila cocktail, and delicious enough to be sipped on its own. … If you are looking for a special treat, the distillery’s Casa San Matias Tojona line is an entire range of tequilas made the same way the distillery made tequila 130 years ago.” — Jim Kearns, Beverage Director, Golden Age Hospitality, New York, NY
“Fortaleza is my favorite for [the] price — it’s just tasty. Another one is Enemigo. They’re really setting the bar for good agave and not overly expensive.” — Mikey Belasco, Beverage Director, GupShup, New York, NY
“I think Arette tequila is one of the most underrated tequilas on the market. Their production is top-notch, their team is amazing, and they produce an unbelievable product at a very approachable price point. Family owned and honored, they have my support.” — Jeff Rogers, Bar Director, Jester Concepts, Minneapolis, MN
“While Fortaleza is a big name with agave aficionados, I am surprised that it is not more well known outside of that group. It is by far one of my favorites and is oh-so-very unique in flavor. It’s definitely not a bottle that you will find at your average chain restaurant, which is a shame for them, but that just leaves more for those of us that know better.” — Erick Castro, Co-founder, Raised By Wolves and Polite Provisions, San Diego, CA
“One of the most important topics in the world of tequila production is sustainability, both in the farming of agave, and also in the well-being of its natural pollinators. David Suro’s lines of Siembra tequilas are not only exceptionally delicious, but also focus on sustainable agriculture and properly caring for the farmers and families that produce it. The tequila is good value, and user-friendly.” — Shannon Tebay, Head Bartender, Death & Co, New York, NY
“Tears of Llorona is an extra añejo tequila like no other. Its complexity deceives your mind for a minute, making you think it could be Cognac or Scotch. Having the product finished in a Scotch barrel really makes this tequila unique.” — Jose De Jesus Medina Camacho, Lead Bartender, Automatic Seafood & Oysters, Birmingham, AL
“Elvelo is our workhorse that not many people have heard of. It was designed by bartenders for bartenders, so it has a nice peppery quality and isn’t sweet like some of the more popular brands. Great to mix or drink straight.” — Justin Simko, Bar Manager, The Bar at Husk, Charleston, SC
“Tapatio Blanco is one of my all-time favorite blanco tequilas on the market, and unfortunately it has not gotten the attention it deserves. Complex and elegant with notes of pepper, cinnamon, cooked agave, and apple. … Smooth enough to drink neat but also great in Tommy’s Margarita!” — Sondre Kasin, Principal Bartender, Undercote, New York, NY
