"Do audio books count as reading" is such a stupid fucking question, it's not even the right question
Like
"Does listening to text read aloud qualify as visually recognizing the individual characters of written language?"
No
"Does listening to text read out loud qualify as receiving the information contained within written language?"
Yes
"Does listening to text read aloud qualify as experiencing the arbitrarily determined level of suffering that I personally think someone should have to experience before they can add a piece of text to their resume, like a trophy for "best martyr" in a cabinet dedicated to calculating intellectual status?"
Go fuck yourself

My @isat-secretsanta-2024 gift for @pillowspace!! They said they’re fascinated by secret research lab AUs, and, in a case of incredible serendipity, that’s been my favorite trope since I was like 8 years old. So I may have gotten possessed and spent three weeks straight worldbuilding a whole entire thing.
So! This comic is my gift for Pillow, but I’m planning to write a fic set in the same AU eventually, titled Desperate Measures. It will take place in a modern day Vaugarde and focus on Odile, Loop, and Siffrin, alongside other more-or-less-familiar faces. And by “eventually” I mean this is now my highest priority project, but it’s big enough that it may be a couple months till I have anything else to show!
Journal transcript under the cut:
wavelength of 690nm, which means it would activate L cones nearly exclusively. If we're correct in our mapping of wavelength combinations to color terms in historical documents, then this would be considered a shade of "red".
I still don't know if I believe it. It seems fantastical, like I've become a character in a children's story, chosen to leave behind the world of the mundane and enter a realm of magic. Or like this is all a dream, and as soon as I'm about to see the shade my brain will realize it doesn't actually know how to show me something I've never seen before, so it'll put me in front of a full auditorium instead; and then I'll forget how to speak Vaugardian, or realize I'm not wearing any pants, or both, and then I'll wake with a start back in Ka Bue.
But however strange it seems, I can't think of any reason they'd have to lie about it. Why else all the NDAs? Why else contact me? So I must assume that it's true. That after years of trying to solve humanity's loss of color vision — a project that began long before I joined it, and that I expected to continue long past my time — I am about to simply be shown a perceivable color. That's the strangest part, really; that this breakthrough isn't related to the mechanisms of sight, but rather, the thing seen.
14/1/29
I thought perhaps they'd synthesized it somehow. Stumbled upon the correct combination of chemicals by accident. Maybe even invented a new sort of craft.
I didn't expect their source of red to be alive.

very tempted to add to the type of "wine-dark* sea" discourse on ancient colour names and call blue AND green by the same name. gonna start innocuous and say things that could be ambiguously green/blue like "the sky was as clear as jade", and then clothesline unsuspecting readers with "the blue grass and trees". the best part of writing is the PVP.
**my hot take is that red wine served in a clay (opaque) vessel would just look black, so it's describing a dark, stormy sea. source: i drink wine out of teacups.

ratio the dissemination | the learned
ratio being the aeon of dissemination. much, much less a romantic plot and much more of an infodump. someone, anyone, i beg of you, please ask me to elaborate on this further
Tumblr media
the dissemination was a path open to all who would be willing to listen and learn, and yet only a handful of pathstriders are worthy enough to follow the footsteps of the dissemination directly as emanators. they were an enigmatic being at best, and a silent being at worst, but that did not make them inherently unkind. one would liken their way - his way - of ruling over the path the way rain falls. methodical, constant, ultimately ever present whether one chooses to have an umbrella on hand or not. although their gifts were constant, and their knowledge abundant, they were not known to have any emanators by their side, or at least, not a noteworthy one.
believing fairness above all, ratio the dissemination has forgone giving a single mortal being the ability to draw power from their path. or perhaps, they were just selective to who they gave this blessed curse with, and had not found one that matched their desires to cultivate and spread information around the cosmos. one would have to be intelligent, or at least possess and innate willingness to learn where they lack, and yet hold a deep desire to help humanity. such is not an easy feat by any stretch of the imagination.
geniuses in general were prone to hording their knowledge than to spread it out evenly. as such, the geniuses within nous the erudition's genius society far outweighed the minds of ratio the dissemination's ' the learned ' in sheer numbers alone. but just an uneven scale was not enough to engulf the dissemination's path as a whole. the minds following the dissemination were good, kind people, who often chose to help others learn the right answers to their problems. these beings were intelligent and held humility, something that many within the genius society did not.
several times, the cosmos chose to compare the dissemination to the erudition. after all, they both pertained to knowledge, how could they truly be so different ? but the different stemmed from the recognition of genius from both paths. ratio would cast their gaze to anyone who was willing to learn and to spread their wisdom, whereas nous only looked at those willing to study, to test, and ultimately, to horde.
the difference even lay within the aeon itself. nous was a supercomputer, only able to make calculated predictions within the variables that it knew. having a horde of knowledge meant that their understanding of the cosmos at large was at stake. if they did not know, they could not predict. they could not think. ratio, on the other hand, took on a more animal-like appearance. the body of a large, twisting marble snake, with the large expanse of six owl wings, three on each side. they did not need to horde knowledge, they were able to spread their wings upon anyone who dared to ask " why ? "
at least, this was the appearance that people commonly associated with the dissemination. you, a faithful pathstrider of the dissemination, one of the learned, however, knew of a different appearance.
you had finished giving a particularly harsh lecture one day, your heart wary but your mind racing with ideas. your mind never stopped, it always continued forward, unending. you would ponder everything, and your introspection lead you to the same conclusion every single time you thought about it : there were no downsides to helping further humanity. and so you taught, vehemently, with your everything. lecture after lecture, book after book, you never gave up on your mission.
this day, however, you were tired. wariness had caught up to you, and you were slumped over in your desk, your head in your hands as you tried to focus on grading your student's tests. you really couldn't stop racing towards this goal, and yet your mind unable to reach any fulfilling answers. was this all for nothing ? how likely was it that you could teach everyone ? surely your kindness would be exploited, surely the ipc would get their hands on the dissemination's learned, as they did the erudition's intelligentsia guild ?
was the path of the dissemination even worth following, if all it did was lead you down a never ending spiral ?
" raise your head, " a man's voice jolted you out of your thoughts. you jolted up, surprised, looking up at him with creased eyebrows. your office door was locked. how did he get in ? " you will be fine. "
the man had wavy iridescent purple hair, that almost looked like it could be blue, too, if the light hit it right, and sharp red-gold eyes, taking in your every reaction. his clothes were just a simple blue and white robe over a black vest and blue slacks, and he had a muscular build, towering over you as you sat down. and in his hair, the laurel, a symbol of the dissemination. those who followed the path often wore it, or something similar, to distinguish between their few numbers. was he a member of the learned as well ?
" i- " you started, finding yourself at a loss for words for a moment. " have no idea what you are talking about, my apologies. how- how did you get in ? are you looking for me ? " " looking for you ? yes, i suppose so, " he replied, ignoring your other question, perhaps on purpose. and perhaps it was best that you didn't know, you thought. " please, call me dr. ratio. " " doct- huh ? " confused, you stammered a little bit, unsure what he was getting at. but he didn't take the time to answer any of the questions you may had, his mouth working faster than your brain.
" i would like to teach you, personally, " dr. ratio explained, not being a man of many words, crossing his arms as he looked at you with a discerning eye, his gaze seemingly tearing you apart, revealing your intricacies and stitching you back up together again. " if you will willing to be under my tutelage, of course. "
the dissemination did not have any emanators so far, and he did not have a human appearance, as far as the records went. but you knew. you knew the truth. you knew a different being than ratio the dissemination.
you knew doctor veritas ratio, the scholar with a temper. and you learned under his wings.

-
Welcome japonistasarqueologicos to a new installment. This time, I'm going to bring you the definition of what archaeology is, what are its sub-disciplines. Having said that, make yourselves comfortable, we're starting.
-
Surely we've all asked ourselves at some point: What is archaeology? What periods does it cover? What countries does it study? Surely when we talk about archaeology, many of us think of images like dinosaurs or Indiana Jones, they are a classic, but that is a wrong view, since archaeologists are not dedicated to that.
-
Archaeology as a discipline is interdisciplinary, which means that it borrows from other disciplines what it needs: such as history, biology, mathematics, chemistry, physics and astronomy, among others. An archaeologist must have a minimum knowledge of all the existential disciplines, since in an archaeological site we can find everything, we must know how to identify each element that we find, but in the site there is a team of specialists in history, biology and other disciplines, who are in charge of their respective studies, archaeology is a discipline of group work.
-
I hope you liked it and see you in future publications.

Why has every with some kind of “designated climbable ledge” mechanic seemingly settled on marking such ledges with yellow?
When we create a visual style for a game, we must establish a visual language. This means visual indicators that the player can recognize and understand. Here is an example of visual language that you might recognize:
Tumblr media
Each of these blocks provides gameplay context to the player upon seeing them. They each have different behaviors and the player can determine what each of them means by their visual cues.
Tumblr media
In a game with climbable ledges, players must be able to differentiate climbable ledges from non-climbable ledges. This necessitates some kind of visual indicator to differentiate the two, or players will get stuck/lost/frustrated. Note how you can almost instantaneously see the path here because the visual language is so well-defined.
The reason that so many games tend to choose yellow for that indicator is because yellow is a high contrast color that sticks out against just about any background color. Look at these real life photos and see how much the yellow sticks out compared to the other colors.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
See how your eye is almost immediately drawn to the yellow elements in each picture? The reason you see so many interactable ledges marked with yellow is because it's the brightest, most contrasting color that will pull player eyes to it almost immediately. For anything we absolutely don't want players to miss, we will often use yellow to highlight it because it is the most obvious thing we can do short of putting enormous UI elements pointing at the thing and saying GO HERE.

why are we always stuck with centro every time something like this happens. i mean i know the answer is that they're the only ones idiotic enough to publicly compile everything on twitter of all places. but ugggh is it too much to ask to have someone who actually fact checks their shit instead of just relying on their name recognition to regurgitate whatever they find for cheap and easy clout

2025 Virgo Disseminating Moon
Friday, January 17, 17:35 UTC, 12°52’ Virgo
The key phrases for the Disseminating lunar phase are “teach, share, communicate;” and “ease up on efforts with our intentions.”
One of my concerns with this particular phase is the combination of a Capricorn Sun and a Virgo Moon. It’s capable of pointing out to everyone else, at great length and in great detail, about every last mistake we’ve made and flaw we’ve exhibited. Critical, negative, and in its way more destructive than a hell-bent Scorpio.
That would be sad, because in a few more days’ time we’ll be in a much better place to exchange ideas and strategies.
We probably won’t have any trouble “easing up” if things haven’t gone well; we’re ready and willing to chuck in the towel. If things are moving right along, though, we have difficulty leaving it alone, wanting to micromanage our precious projects. Messing with it too much will create problems further down the road - we need to learn to recognize when it’s time to finish up and move on.
This is a good time to do those Virgo-Moon housekeeping and health-&-wellness type things. We’re in the right frame of mind for it, and can find good incentives.

ewan has been consistently saying in interviews that aemond still holds love for aegon that their relationship is complicated but they're still family so he is still loyal yet none of that is actually shown or written to be like that on-screen.... am kinda convinced that ewan hates the aemond betrayal at RR just as much as we do 😭😭😭

The idea that the whole timeless child thing makes a bunch of interactions between the Doctor and other time lords not make sense is funny to me because I bet none of them knew shit, let’s be real here that info probably didn’t get far past the founders and they all sucked so why would they actually treat the doctor any differently given they got what they wanted from them. Just like go watch the deadly assassin and pay attention to what spandrell and engin are doing/saying before giving the time lords too much credit
