State-Sponsored Discrimination
Discrimination and subjugation of specific groups by a state can manifest in various ways. Here are some common actions and policies that states may employ when engaging in discrimination or subjugation:
Legal Discrimination: States may enact laws that explicitly discriminate against certain groups, such as racial segregation, discriminatory voting laws, or restrictions on property ownership.
Institutionalized Bias: Discrimination can be institutionalized through biased law enforcement, unequal access to education, or disparities in healthcare.
Segregation: Establishing segregated facilities or neighborhoods, often along racial lines, is a classic form of discrimination.
Violence and Repression: States may use violence, harassment, or intimidation to subdue or control specific groups.
Forced Relocation: Displacing particular communities or groups from their homes or land.
Censorship and Suppression of Information: Controlling or censoring information to limit awareness and organization among discriminated groups.
Economic Exploitation: Exploiting certain groups economically by providing unfair labor conditions or limited economic opportunities.
Denial of Basic Rights: Depriving specific groups of their rights, including the right to vote, work, or access education.
Hate Speech and Propaganda: Promoting hate speech, propaganda, or stereotypes to justify discrimination.
Ethnic Cleansing and Genocide: Extreme cases involve ethnic cleansing and genocide, where the state actively seeks to eliminate a particular ethnic or social group.
Religious Persecution: Discrimination based on religion, including restrictions on religious practices, places of worship, or religious attire.
Sexual Orientation Discrimination: Enforcing discriminatory laws or practices against individuals based on their sexual orientation.
Political Oppression: Targeting groups based on their political beliefs or affiliations, including suppression of opposition parties.
State-Sponsored Discrimination: In some instances, the state sponsors and supports discriminatory groups or organizations.
Marginalization: Marginalizing certain groups from participating in the political, economic, or social life of the country.
Denial of Citizenship or Legal Status: Denying citizenship, legal status, or documentation to certain groups, rendering them stateless.
Gerrymandering: Manipulating political boundaries to dilute the voting power of specific groups.
Selective Law Enforcement: Enforcing the law selectively to target particular groups.
Mass Surveillance: Conducting extensive surveillance of specific communities or groups.
Restricted Movement: Imposing curfews, roadblocks, or travel restrictions on targeted groups.
These actions are often associated with human rights abuses, and they can result in severe social, political, and economic consequences for the affected communities. It's essential to address and combat discrimination and subjugation to ensure a more just and equitable society.

Hot take here but...
Like I know this is Tumblr. This is the autism site.
So of course I knew everyone would side with Laios on this and empathize more with him but its driving me insane how everybodys saying Toshiro was completely on the wrong here and he should have communicated better and talked about his grievances with Laios WHEN THE WHOLE POINT OF THIS IS THEY WERE BOTH ON WRONG HERE.
LIKE THERES A REASON CHILCHUCK BRINGS UP HOW LAIOS SHOULD WORK ON HIS SOCIAL SKILLS A COUPLE OF EPISODES AGO/JUST BEFORE THIS HAPPENS?
like I know most of you don't like it but social cues ARE a part of society culture. Social cues ARE a form of communication.
In fact they were made to facilitate communication.
They were made so everytime Alice and Bob annoy each other they don't have to go and have a heart to heart when a simple gesture can have the same effect.
In fact sometimes better because sometimes addressing something with words makes it come out stronger/ruder than it is.
And sometimes just like you have problems understanding social cues some people have problems speaking, finding the way to words their thoughts/feelings correctly.
Specially among strangers where you don't know the others personality or how they could react to your words.
That's where social cues, that are general rules the majority of people have agreed on, work. To facilitate convivence.
And yeah there's an argument to be said about how you are supposed to know them if they are unspoken rules and the thing is YOU LEARN THEM THROUGH SOCIAL INTERACTION, through living in a society.
Just like gender norms and the like you don't learn them in school during a boring lecture where a professor lists them on the board. You learn them through interaction and repetition, throught observing your peers. Just like learning to talk and walk and other stuff. Heck, your parents and other adults around are supposed to ease you into it.
And yes, it's not a perfect system. But nothing is.
The saying 'communication is the key' doesn't refer to just talking.
Social cues and other non spoken gestures are also another form of communicating. Equally as valid as all the others
There's beauty in talking and openly expressing your love to someone. Or your grievances.
But there's also beauty in grabbing someones arm or the you picking up your friend is uncomfortable due to the turnup of their mouth or the way they stand.
One isn't superior to other. They are supposed to complement each other
Laios and Toshiros mistakes were relying completely in one or the other instead a compromising and finding a middle point.
Toshiro should have expressed his annoyance at Laios.
And Laios should have picked better Toshiros signs of discomfort.
(All of this isn't even taking into account how they come from different cultures and shock it comes with it because others have talked better about it and I wanted to focus on this. On how even if they have from the same background Laios should have also been a fault.
Hell not only social cues even talking is affected by ones cultural background. What for me is normal could come out as rude for someone in Japan)

Why do people deny the systemic oppression of fat people?
People do everything they can to deny there is a systemic oppression of fat people because they want to keep enjoying the benefits of oppressing fat people---undeserved privileges garnered for the mere fact of not existing in a fat body.
Thin privilege is dangerous because it obstructs social change. As long as fat oppression grants thin privileges, people who benefit from thin privilege will be incentivized at worst to actively oppress fat people and at best to pretend that fat oppression and thin privilege doesn't exist.
If there were no privileges from simply existing in a thin(ner) body, why would people go on unhinged rants about "there's no thin privilege, only fat consequences"? What would they stand to gain by scolding fat people? What they're doing is acting their part in the morality play around fatness in order to preserve the advantages they get for being thin(ner). If they can't convince others, or even just themselves, that they are superior to fat people, then they would have to face the fact that the advantages they enjoy for being thin are undeserved.
Fatness and tallness are similar in their hereditary nature and association with certain health outcomes (I have an ancient blog post that touches upon this here). I have yet to hear anyone finger-wagging a tall person for the burden they place on the medical establishment, or shaming a tall person for not being able to fit in a plane seat with a narrow pitch, or systematically complaining for not being able to recline when a tall person is behind them, and so forth.
There isn't a systemic oppression of tall people. This isn't because height is less controllable than weight. Only a tiny fraction of people can lose a significant amount of weight and keep it off in the long term (look in our FAQ if you are curious). It's because short privilege isn't as much of a thing as thin privilege. So there's no social-oppressive infrastructure for short people who want to keep enjoying undeserved short privileges to maintain.
My hope is that, someday, thin privilege will seem as absurd as short privilege. Because only then will we have a chance to end fat oppression once and for all.

Sometimes I'm really frustrated that I didn't get certain types of testing and therapy when I was much younger. My brother was in occupational and physical therapy by the time he was three years old. Granted, some of his difficulties were more obvious than mine. And it was a decade later; there was more awareness. But also some of it is that my parents just weren't very responsible with me!
Something that is always just kind of told as a funny family story is the fact that in preschool, at parent teacher meetings, my parents were told that I "failed scissors." Yeah, that's cute. But it also meant something! My teachers brought up the fact that I wasn't meeting a developmental milestone; that's something to take note of! I was dyspraxic. There was a reason I couldn't use scissors until I was much older, a reason I didn't learn to tie laces until I was nine, that I couldn't do buttons or zippers, that I didn't hold pencils or forks properly and made messes when I ate, that I couldn't catch things or tell left from right until way later than my peers! And I was having sensory meltdowns multiple times a week in preschool, I would cry when garbage trucks went by because they were so loud, my first sentence was "tag hurt" about the tag in my shirt. Like, someone should have maybe noticed some of these things and gotten me checked out! If I had ever had occupational therapy it would have been honestly lifechanging for me.
And like, it's fine. I did okay without it; that's why I never got it. I did well in school, and as I got older my physical coordination problems were less important as emphasis was placed on academics instead of fine motor skills. I learned to mostly cope with my sensory issues and hide them in public. The fact that math was much harder for me than other subjects and that I had trouble with visual information was certainly never investigated, because I still did well in all of my classes, and it wasn't until I was sixteen that I found out I had also had a visual learning disability the whole time. That one I blame my parents less for, as the signs were much more subtle. But it still sucks that it took so long to figure out; when I finally was diagnosed with a learning disability the tester included all sorts of recommendations for accommodations that would have been incredibly helpful in school. Even simple things like larger fonts and less visual stimuli on worksheets would have helped a lot.
Idk, it's just frustrating sometimes, because I really think early interventions for some of this stuff would have made a really big difference in my quality of life as a kid. Especially occupational therapy for my sensory issues, because that was causing the most distress, and has continued to cause significant distress to this day. My parents didn't know anything about anything, so there was never any kind of intervention like OT or a sensory diet or anything like that, but gosh it would have been huge for me. Heck, even owning a weighted blanket would have been helpful as a kid (I have one now). I know there wasn't nearly as much awareness of things like that 20 years ago, but some of my problems were a) being pointed out by teachers and b) just generally very obvious, and a little bit of research would have gone a long way. Instead I was just written off as a sensitive kid, which like, yeah, true! But there were reasons for that! Sigh.

Oh? You’re worried about being accused of being a bigot? Did you complete the anti-discrimination training that was 30 minutes long? No? You thought it was stupid and too much work? Interesting, interesting…

@zeroabyss replied to your post “Reading a certain script and spotting things I...”:
For me this situation is a lot more nuanced than others, since Soren by his own past was treated as an outcast by Laguz as a Branded. It’s not great of course, but he’s an actual victim of prejudice as a child who ended up impacted by that. It’s one of the reasons the Laguz treat Branded is such a flaw of theirs continuing the cycle. Branded as a whole generally don’t like their Laguz side as a result, which we know. Since they can at least “pass” for being human and will be treated as people. Whereas Laguz can tell by instinct alone.
Indeed, Soren has his own reasons to be prejudiced against the Laguz, and iirc since he was around Gallia when he was young/meet Ike, he already faced the beast laguz's brand of indifference when he was younger - which is why he, most likely, so viciously attacks and insults Mordecai, aka, blue teddy tiger bear, when they first meet.
While his backstory with Laguz is not comparable to Jill's - who was legit raised/indoctrined since her wee days to think they're subhumans so to her it's a natural thing to call them there is no animosity, and who has to "unlearn" what she grew up with - Soren's BG isn't developed at this point (I think? i don't remember if POR supports are chapter timed?) so we have a situation where Ike (the player) is very severe and angry at people who insults and discriminate at the Laguz (Jill and several NPCs), but some members of the cast still insult/discriminate against Laguz, and by the end of this game (FE10 shows some growth!), even doing all optional conversations, they do not grow - which is sort of rich, given how the protagonist wants people to grow out of their initial prejudices and ultimately work together.
Hell, even Shinon, the loudest Laguz "hater" in FE9 gets to support a Laguz, Janaff, and they ultimately sort of make-up, with Shinon wanting to learn more about Janaff's life experiences.
I know Soren's growth will happen in FE10, he will ultimately help Skrimir - a laguz - without calling him a subhuman or any names, and even suffer/tolerate his stupidity.
And yet, in FE9, his behaviour sticks out, maybe more strongly, because he is supposed to be close to Ike and Ike actively fights against any discriminatory prejudices/feelings in his own group.
So while Soren has his own reasons - that explain his behaviour but doesn't justify it in the slightest - FE9 fails to adress and condemn his prejudice like it does to Jill, Shinon, Lethe and even Stefan* - who has a similar background! -, save for that line where Ike gets a minor injury due to Soren insulting Mordecai and Lethe.
Jill talks to Lethe and her character arc is growing past her prejudices, Lethe talks to Jill/Ike and finally accepts to have Beorc allies/friends, Shinon talks to Janaff and sees him at the end of their support as a fellow being with life experiences and not a suhuman anymore, Stefan talks to Mordecai and they ultimately became friends...
I know the devs always intended for Tellius to be a duology, so maybe they reserved his character growth for the second game (I still hope they didn't want to nuke supports as they did from day 1 !) - but as FE9 stands, it's as if we're told "Soren can still be prejudiced as fuck in this game and it won't cause any problems because he will grow in the next game".
Which is... sort of meh tier writing.
*Just like Soren, Stefan is a branded who "insults" Mordecai, but he later talks to him, shares more about his POV and own prejudices (why he thinks Laguz hate Brandeds on a racial level), saying he and Mordecai cannot be friends, until Mordecai says he doesn't give a fig about his universe laws and will befriend Stefan nonetheless.

Increased productivity from a cognitive inclusive workplace

This ACAS article shows there is a trend and reading between the lines, neurodiverse employees are not properly valued as of 8th November 2024. As a result of the disconnect between neurodiverse people and employers, many cases of disability…
