A New Year's Resolution in Action: Donating to the Canadian Red Cross for Alberta Wildfires Shaina Tranquilino August 2, 2024
As we step into the month of August, I find myself reflecting on one of my New Year’s resolutions that has become a deeply fulfilling part of my year: dedicating each month to supporting a different organization that resonates with me. This personal commitment not only allows me to contribute to causes I care about but also helps me stay connected to the pressing issues our world faces.
For the month of August, I have chosen to direct my support to the Canadian Red Cross, particularly to aid their efforts in combating the devastating Alberta Wildfires. The choice to support the Red Cross was influenced by the recent news reports and stories of those affected by the wildfires. The sheer scale of the disaster and the human impact it has created a strong urge within me to lend a helping hand.
Why the Canadian Red Cross?
The Canadian Red Cross is renowned for its swift and effective response in times of crisis. With its extensive network and resources, the organization has been on the front lines, providing essential services to those displaced and affected by the Alberta Wildfires. Their work includes emergency relief, evacuation support, and long-term recovery assistance. By donating, I am not only contributing to immediate relief efforts but also supporting the broader recovery and rebuilding initiatives that will help communities get back on their feet.
The Impact of Your Donation
Even a small contribution can make a significant difference in disaster relief efforts. The Canadian Red Cross utilizes donations to supply basic necessities such as food, water, and shelter, as well as to fund critical services like mental health support and community rebuilding. Knowing that my donation will help provide these vital resources is incredibly motivating and reinforces the value of my resolution.
How You Can Get Involved
If this cause speaks to you as it did to me, there are several ways you can contribute:
Make a Donation: Visit the Canadian Red Cross website to make a financial contribution. Every dollar helps in the fight against the wildfires and supports those in need.
Volunteer: Consider offering your time and skills to support local relief efforts. Volunteers play a crucial role in disaster response and recovery.
Spread the Word: Share information about the Alberta Wildfires and the Canadian Red Cross on social media to raise awareness and encourage others to contribute.
Stay Informed: Keep up with the latest updates on the situation and the Red Cross’s efforts to better understand the ongoing needs and how you can help.
My journey of donating to a different organization each month has been a rewarding experience, offering a sense of purpose and connection to various causes. August’s focus on supporting the Canadian Red Cross and their critical work in response to the Alberta Wildfires is a reminder of the power of collective action and compassion. By coming together to support those in need, we can make a tangible impact and help build a stronger, more resilient community.
As the wildfires continue to affect countless lives, I encourage you to join me in supporting this vital cause. Together, we can contribute to the relief and recovery efforts that will make a meaningful difference in the lives of those affected.
Here's to making a positive impact, one month at a time. https://www.canadahelps.org/en/crisis-relief-center/jasper-alberta-wildfire-relief-crc/?utm_source=landingpage&utm_medium=CHcrc&utm_campaign=homepagerotator
Part 2: What to Do When You're in the Midst of a Forest Fire: Essential Safety Tips Shaina Tranquilino August 2, 2024
Forest fires can be sudden and terrifying, posing severe risks to anyone in their path. Whether you're a hiker, camper, or resident in a fire-prone area, understanding how to respond in the midst of a forest fire is crucial for your safety. Here’s a comprehensive guide on what to do if you find yourself caught in the midst of a forest fire.
1. Stay Informed
Monitor Alerts and Updates: If you’re in an area prone to wildfires, always stay informed about local fire conditions. Use a battery-powered radio, smartphone, or other reliable sources to receive updates from emergency services. Understanding the fire’s location and direction will help you make informed decisions.
Know Your Escape Routes: Before heading into a forested area, familiarize yourself with potential evacuation routes and safe zones. This preparation can save precious time during an emergency.
2. Find a Safe Location
Seek Shelter: If you are near a fire, your primary goal is to find a safe location away from the flames and smoke. Ideally, move towards a cleared area or an open field where the fire is less likely to spread. Avoid dense forests or areas with heavy vegetation, as these will fuel the fire.
Avoid Areas with Flammable Materials: Stay away from areas with a lot of dry brush, logs, or dead trees. Fires can spread rapidly in such environments.
3. Protect Yourself from Smoke and Heat
Cover Your Mouth and Nose: Use a cloth, mask, or piece of clothing to cover your mouth and nose to reduce inhalation of smoke and harmful particles. If you have a specialized smoke mask, use it.
Stay Low: Smoke rises, so staying close to the ground can help you breathe cleaner air. Crouch or lie down if necessary, and keep your head low.
Protect Your Skin: Wear long sleeves and pants to protect your skin from heat and embers. If you have access to a fire-resistant blanket or clothing, use it to shield yourself from intense heat.
4. Manage Your Escape
Move Perpendicularly to the Fire: If you need to move, travel perpendicular to the direction of the fire’s spread. Moving directly away from the fire might not always be the safest option, as fires can change direction rapidly.
Stay Calm and Assess the Situation: Avoid panicking. Take a moment to assess your surroundings, plan your route, and proceed with caution. Ensure you are not walking into areas that may lead to further danger.
Avoid Using Vehicles: If you’re driving and become trapped, stay in your vehicle. It can offer some protection from heat and flying embers. Keep windows rolled up and use the air conditioning on recirculate mode if possible.
5. Signal for Help
Use Visual and Audible Signals: If you are in distress and need rescue, use a whistle, flare, or mirror to signal for help. If you have a smartphone with a signal, call emergency services and provide them with your exact location.
Stay Visible: Make yourself as visible as possible to rescuers by staying in open areas where you can be easily spotted. Avoid hiding in dense vegetation.
6. After the Fire
Check for Updates: Once you are safe, continue to monitor updates from authorities regarding the fire’s status and any potential hazards in your area.
Be Cautious of Hazardous Conditions: After the fire has passed, be wary of hazards such as smoldering embers, falling trees, and weakened structures. Avoid returning to your home or campsite until it has been declared safe by authorities.
Seek Medical Attention: If you experience symptoms of smoke inhalation or burns, seek medical attention immediately. Even minor injuries can become serious if left untreated.
Being prepared and knowing how to act in the event of a forest fire can significantly increase your chances of staying safe. By staying informed, protecting yourself from smoke and heat, and managing your escape effectively, you can navigate this dangerous situation with greater confidence. Always prioritize your safety and follow the guidance of emergency services to ensure a safe outcome in the face of such a challenging crisis.
Remember, preparation is key. By understanding these steps and being ready to act, you can better protect yourself and others in the event of a forest fire.

Calculating the amount companies owe for causing global warming
Fossil fuel companies ignore damages caused by the climate disaster they created. Leaving governments, insurance companies, and private citizens to cover the costs of mitigation, damage and reconstruction.
In the meantime, these fossil fuel corporations are price-gouging and ripping off the world as they brag about record-breaking profits (while receiving government subsidies - aka corporate welfare)
Fossil fuel corporations must be held accountable and should be legally obligated to help pay for the crisis they created.
Researchers calculated the amount each fossil fuel corporation could pay to a global fund for mitigation efforts, climate damage and climate refugee relocation.
Top 5 Fossil Fuel Corporations Annual Assessments:
Saudi Aramco - $42.7 billion
Gazprom - $20.1 billion
Exxon-Mobil - $18.4 billion
Shell - $16.3 billion
Chevron - $12.8 billion

In today’s digital era, organizations are highly dependent on technology for their day-to-day operations. But what happens when an unexpected disaster strikes? Whether it’s a natural calamity, cyberattack, or human error, businesses need to be prepared to mitigate losses and ensure continuity. This is where disaster recovery planning comes into play. It’s a crucial aspect of any organization’s risk management strategy, ensuring that operations can resume with minimal downtime after a disruptive event.
In this article, we will delve into the importance of disaster recovery planning, key components of an effective plan, and best practices to ensure your business is well-prepared for any eventuality.
What is Disaster Recovery Planning?
Disaster recovery planning is a strategic process that outlines how an organization will restore its operations after a disruptive incident, such as a natural disaster, cyberattack, hardware failure, or even a human error. The goal is to minimize downtime, and data loss, and ensure that critical business functions can continue or be resumed quickly.
The plan typically involves backing up data, identifying critical business processes, setting up alternate facilities, and establishing communication protocols. The scope of a disaster recovery plan can vary depending on the size and nature of the business, but the fundamental principles remain the same—preparedness, response, and recovery.
Why is Disaster Recovery Planning Important?
Disasters can strike at any moment, and when they do, the consequences can be catastrophic for unprepared businesses. The loss of data, revenue, and reputation can have long-term implications. Here are several reasons why disaster recovery planning is essential:
1. Minimizes Downtime
In the event of a disaster, every minute of downtime can result in lost revenue and decreased customer trust. A well-structured disaster recovery plan ensures that critical business functions can be restored quickly, minimizing the financial impact of a disaster.
2. Protects Data
Data is the lifeblood of modern organizations. A disaster can lead to the loss of valuable information, whether it’s customer data, financial records, or intellectual property. Disaster recovery planning involves regular data backups and secure storage, ensuring that data can be restored even after a major incident.
3. Ensures Regulatory Compliance
Many industries are subject to stringent data protection regulations. Failing to have a disaster recovery plan in place can result in non-compliance with these regulations, leading to hefty fines and legal repercussions. A comprehensive plan helps ensure that businesses remain compliant with data protection laws, even in the face of a disaster.
4. Safeguards Reputation
In today’s competitive landscape, customer trust is invaluable. A company that fails to recover quickly from a disaster risks losing its reputation and customer base. A robust disaster recovery plan can help reassure customers that their data is safe and that the business can continue to operate effectively, even in the wake of a crisis.
Key Components of an Effective Disaster Recovery Plan
https://enterprisechronicles.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/6.2-Key-Components-of-an-Effective-Disaster-Recovery-Plan-Image-by-juststock-from-Getty-Images.jpg
Creating a disaster recovery plan involves more than just backing up data. A well-rounded plan includes several critical components to ensure that the business can recover from a wide range of potential threats. Here are some essential elements:
1. Risk Assessment
Before creating a disaster recovery plan, it’s crucial to assess the potential risks that could disrupt business operations. This includes natural disasters like floods, earthquakes, and fires, as well as human-made threats such as cyberattacks, hardware failures, and human error. Conducting a risk assessment helps businesses identify vulnerabilities and prioritize areas that need the most attention.
2. Business Impact Analysis (BIA)
A BIA helps organizations determine which business functions are critical and how long they can be disrupted before significant damage occurs. This analysis provides insights into the potential impact of a disaster on revenue, customer satisfaction, and operations, guiding the development of recovery strategies.
3. Data Backup and Recovery
One of the most critical aspects of disaster recovery planning is ensuring that data is regularly backed up and can be restored when needed. This involves setting up automatic backups, securing backup storage (whether on-site, off-site, or cloud-based), and establishing a clear process for restoring data after a disaster.
4. Communication Plan
Effective communication is vital during a disaster. A disaster recovery plan should include a communication strategy that outlines how the organization will communicate with employees, customers, and stakeholders during and after a crisis. This includes identifying key contacts, establishing communication channels, and providing clear instructions on how to respond to different scenarios.
5. Testing and Training
A disaster recovery plan is only effective if it’s tested regularly and employees are trained on how to execute it. Regular testing helps identify any gaps or weaknesses in the plan, while employee training ensures that everyone knows their role in the recovery process. Simulating disaster scenarios can help prepare teams for real-life events and improve response times.
Best Practices for Disaster Recovery Planning
Implementing a disaster recovery plan is not a one-time task; it requires ongoing attention and refinement. Here are some best practices to ensure your disaster recovery strategy is effective:
1. Prioritize Critical Systems
Identify which systems and applications are critical to your business operations and prioritize them in your disaster recovery efforts. This ensures that the most important functions are restored first, minimizing the overall impact of a disaster.
2. Leverage Cloud Solutions
Cloud-based solutions have become an essential part of modern disaster recovery planning. Cloud backups provide secure, off-site storage for critical data and applications, reducing the risk of data loss in the event of an on-site disaster. Additionally, cloud-based disaster recovery services can automatically replicate systems and applications, making it easier to restore operations quickly.
3. Review and Update Regularly
As businesses evolve, so do the risks they face. It’s important to regularly review and update your disaster recovery plan to reflect changes in technology, business operations, and potential threats. Regular updates ensure that the plan remains relevant and effective in mitigating the risks of new and emerging disasters.
4. Collaborate with IT and Security Teams
Disaster recovery planning is not just the responsibility of the IT department. It requires collaboration between IT, security, and other departments to ensure a comprehensive approach. Working together helps address both technical and operational challenges, ensuring a smooth recovery process.
5. Document Everything
All aspects of the disaster recovery plan should be thoroughly documented. This includes recovery procedures, roles and responsibilities, communication plans, and contact information. Detailed documentation helps ensure that everyone involved in the recovery process knows what to do and can act quickly during a disaster.
Conclusion
In today’s fast-paced, technology-driven world, no organization can afford to ignore the importance of disaster recovery planning. A well-crafted plan can mean the difference between quickly bouncing back from a disaster and facing long-term consequences. By understanding the risks, prioritizing critical systems, and regularly testing and updating the plan, businesses can ensure that they are prepared for any unexpected event.
Disaster recovery planning is not just about reacting to crises—it’s about proactively safeguarding your business, data, and reputation. Start planning today to secure your tomorrow.

An open letter to the U.S. Congress
Increase critical funding for disaster relief programs!
795 so far! Help us get to 1,000 signers!
As your constituent, I am urging you to increase critical funding for disaster relief programs.
Communities are struggling to recover from Hurricane Helene and now Hurricane Milton is right on its heels. According to weather reports, Hurricane Milton—with storm surges that are expected to be as high as 15 feet—has the capacity to be one of the most catastrophic hurricanes in history.
The need for disaster relief will only increase as we continue to deal with the impacts of the climate catastrophe. There will be much more to do to help communities rebuild―families need access to safe and affordable housing, quality health care, and investments that prioritize equity including HUD’s Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) program, which provides flexible grants to help cities, counties, and states recover from disasters and rebuild affordable housing and other infrastructure after a disaster, especially in low-income areas.
We must address the climate crisis―and that can include eliminating tax breaks for fossil fuel companies when Congress takes up tax legislation next year, which would also increase revenue by almost $110 billion over 10 years to make much-needed investments.
Helping communities recover is a critical role of the federal government. FEMA is carrying out its responsibilities now, but will need more funds soon. We know that the communities that will be most impacted by hurricanes and natural disasters include communities of color, people with disabilities, and rural and low-income communities.
We cannot sacrifice the most vulnerable in our society due to partisan squabbling or outright lies about what FEMA disaster relief funding is being used for.
Please work with your colleagues to increase disaster relief funding in FY 2025 appropriations and speak out to refute the false assertions that FEMA disaster relief funds are being diverted to other purposes.
